Mars Observer: Phase 0 safety review data package

The Mars Observer Program has as its primary objectives a study of the geochemistry, atmospheric dynamics, atmosphere/surface interactions, seasonal variations, and magnetic field characteristics of Mars. The Mars Observer Spacecraft, safety critical spacecraft subsystems, ground support equipment, ground operations scenario, requirements matrix, and equipment specifications are described.

Compact Hyperspectral Mapper for Environmental Remote Sensing Applications (CHyMERA) End-of-phase Data Review Package

CHYMERA is an Instrument Incubator concept to design, build, and test an instrument that will reduce size, mass, and cost and increase science potential and flexibility for future atmospheric remote sensing missions within the focus of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise (ESE). The primary effort of the development plan will be on high spatial resolution ozone, N02, S02, aerosol, and cloud measurements, but it is hoped that the techniques developed will prove useful for other measurements as well. The core design will involve a high performance, wide field-of-view (FOV) front end telescope which will illuminate a filter/focal plane array (FFPA) package. The use of a non-dispersive optical configuration will reduce size, mass and complexity. The wide FOV optics will permit short duration global coverage (1-2 days) without the need for a scanner.

MSFC SBMD Cryogenic Test Data Review

The Subscale Beryllium Mirror Demonstrator (SBMD) was developed in support of the Next Generation Space Telescope program. The goal was to produce a 0.5 m class, ultra lightweight (<12 kg/sq m), beryllium mirror that could be operated at 35 K. The mirror, developed by Ball Aerospace, has been cryogenically tested at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) a total of three times. The first two tests established the cryogenic performance and repeatability of the SBMD. Between the second and third tests, the mirror was cryo-figured. Thus, the third test measured the performance of the mirror with cryo-figuring applied. This paper will describe the test goals, the test instrumentation, and the test results (low & high order figure and radius of curvature) for all three cryogenic tests.

MSFC COI NMSD Cryogenic Test Data Review

The NGST Mirror System Demonstrator (NMSD) from Composite Optics Incorporated (COI) was developed in support of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) program. The goal was to produce a 1.6 m class, ultra light-weight (<15 kg/sq m), glass-on-composite mirror that could be operated at 35 K. The mirror has been cryogenically tested at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) a total of two times. This paper will describe the test goals, the test instrumentation, and the test results (low & high order figure and radius of curvature) for both cryogenic tests.
