Enhanced Electron-Phonon Coupling for Charge-Density-Wave Formation in La 1.8-$x$ Eu 0.2 Sr $x$ CuO 4+$δ$

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations are prevalent in all copper-oxide superconductors. While CDWs in conventional metals are driven by coupling between lattice vibrations and electrons, the role of the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in cuprate CDWs is strongly debated. Using Cu L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we study the CDW and Cu-O bond-stretching phonons in the stripe-ordered cuprate La 1.8-x Eu 0.2 Sr x CuO 4+δ . In this work, we investigate the interplay between charge order and EPC as a function of doping and temperature and find that the EPC is enhanced in a narrow momentum region around the CDW ordering vector. By detuning the incident photon energy from the absorption resonance, we extract an EPC matrix element at the CDW ordering vector of M ≃ 0.36 eV , which decreases to M ≃ 0.30 eV at high temperature in the absence of the CDW. Our results suggest a feedback mechanism in which the CDW enhances the EPC which, in turn, further stabilizes the CDW.

Experimental evidence that zinc impurities pin pair-density-wave order in La 2-x Ba x CuO 4

Both Zn doping and c-axis magnetic fields have been observed to increase the spin stripe order in La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 with x close to 1/8. For x = 0.095, the applied magnetic field also causes superconducting layers to decouple, presumably by favoring pair-density-wave order that consequently frustrates interlayer Josephson coupling. Here we show that introducing 1% Zn also leads to an initial onset of two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity, followed by 3D superconductivity at lower temperatures, even in zero field. Overall, we infer that the Zn pins pair-density-wave order locally, establishing the generality of such behavior.

Optically induced umklapp shift currents in striped cuprates

Motivated by recent experiments that observed low-frequency second-order optical responses in doped striped superconductors, here we investigate the nonlinear electrodynamics of systems exhibiting a charge density wave (CDW) order parameter. Due to the Bragg scattering off the CDW order, an incoming spatially homogeneous electric field in addition to zero momentum current generates umklapp currents that are modulated in space at momenta of the reciprocal CDW lattice. In particular, here we predict and microscopically evaluate the umklapp shift current, a finite momentum analog of the regular shift current which represents the second-order optical process that downconverts homogeneous AC electric field into low-frequency, zero momentum current. Specifically, we evaluate real-time response functions within mean-field theory via the Keldysh technique and use the Peierls substitution to compute observables at finite momenta in lattice models. We find that systems with certain lattice symmetries (such as inversion symmetry), where the regular shift current is disallowed, may give rise to the umklapp one. We apply our framework to investigate lattice symmetries in layered materials with helical-like stripes and show that both types of shift currents provide insight into the nature of intertwined phases of matter. Finally, we discuss the relation of our findings to recent experiments in striped superconductors. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Landscape of coexisting excitonic states in the insulating single-layer cuprates and nickelates

We present an ab initio study of the excitonic states of a prototypical high-temperature superconductor La 2 CuO 4 and compare them to the isostructural single-layer nickelate La 2 NiO 4 . A key difference in the low-energy electronic structure leads to very different excitonic behavior. Excitons in La 2 CuO 4 are delocalized and can freely move in the CuO 2 plane without disturbing the antiferromagnetic order. In contrast, in La 2 NiO 4 , we find the low-lying excitonic states to be extremely localized, producing a nearly flat dispersion. The theoretically obtained excitonic dispersion and behavior are in excellent agreement with RIXS observations. To classify the excitons, we project the electron-hole coupling onto each atomic site including the full manifold of atomic orbitals. We find the excitons to be composed of a linear combination of exciton classes, including Mott-Hubbard, d-d, and charge-transfer. The implication of these excitations to the high-T c pairing mechanism is also discussed.

Doping-dependent phonon anomaly and charge-order phenomena in the HgBa 2 CuO 4 + δ and HgBa 2 CaCu 2 O 6 + δ superconductors

Using resonant x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, we study charge correlations and lattice dynamics in two model cuprates, HgBa 2 CuO 4 + δ and HgBa 2 CaCu 2 O 6 + δ . We observe a maximum of the characteristic charge order temperature around the same hole concentration (p ≈ 0.09) in both compounds, and concomitant pronounced anomalies in the lattice dynamics that involve the motion of atoms in and/or adjacent to the CuO 2 layers. These anomalies are already present at room temperature, and therefore precede the formation of the static charge correlations, and we attribute them to an instability of the CuO 2 layers. Our finding implies that the charge order in the cuprates is an emergent phenomenon, driven by a fundamental variation in both lattice and electronic properties as a function of doping.

Giant orbital polarization of Ni 2+ in a square planar environment

Finding large orbital polarization in Ni-based oxides has become a topic of paramount interest in recent years due to the prospect of finding superconductivity. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure of single-crystalline samples of Sr 2 CuO 3 and Ni-doped Sr 2 CuO 3 containing Cu/NiO 4 square planar units. Our polarization-dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments reveal extremely large orbital polarization (~63%) for Ni 2+ . Cluster calculations and ab initio calculations find that the giant orbital polarization arises due to the low-spin (S=0) configuration with two holes in the Ni 3d x 2 -y 2 orbital, contrary to the expected high-spin (S=1) state from Hund's first rule.

Atomic-layer engineering of nickelates (in search of novel superconductors)

Karl Alex Mueller's intuition was that the nature of mobile charge carriers in manganates and nickelates should be like those in cuprates, which he believed were Jahn-Teller polarons, so he expected them to also host high-temperature superconductivity (HTS). Following his suggestions and persuasion, in the past, we performed several experiments that included atomic-layer-by-layer synthesis of novel, metastable manganates and nickelates. Despite our efforts and several USO sightings, here we failed to find any reproducible superconductivity and dropped the project fifteen years ago. Our results are presented here, for the first time - timely, since HTS was very recently discovered in nickelates (under pressure). So, whether his opinions were on the mark or not, Alex did guess it right - again.

Infinite-layer nickelates as Ni-e $g$ Hund’s metals

The recent and exciting discovery of superconductivity in the hole-doped infinite-layer nickelate Nd 1-$δ$ Sr $δ$ NiO 2 draws strong attention to correlated quantum materials. From a theoretical viewpoint, this class of unconventional superconducting materials provides an opportunity to unveil a physics hidden in correlated quantum materials. Here we study the temperature and doping dependence of the local spectrum as well as the charge, spin and orbital susceptibilities from first principles. By using ab initio LQSGW+DMFT methodology, we show that onsite Hund’s coupling in Ni-$d$ orbitals gives rise to multiple signatures of Hund’s metallic phase in Ni-e $g$ orbitals. The proposed picture of the nickelates as an e $g$ (two orbital) Hund’s metal differs from the picture of the Fe-based superconductors as a five orbital Hund’s metal as well as the picture of the cuprates as doped charge transfer insulators. Our finding uncovers a new class of the Hund’s metals and has potential implications for the broad range of correlated two orbital systems away from half-filling.

Intertwined charge, spin, and pairing orders in doped iron ladders

Motivated by recent experimental progress on iron-based ladder compounds, we study the doped two-orbital Hubbard model for the two-leg ladder BaFe2S3. The model is constructed by using ab initio hopping parameters and the ground state properties are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the (π,0) magnetic ordering at half filling, with ferromagnetic rungs and antiferromagnetic legs, becomes incommensurate upon hole doping. Moreover, depending on the strength of the Hubbard U coupling, other magnetic patterns, such as (0,π), are also stabilized. We found that the binding energy for two holes becomes negative for intermediate Hubbard interaction strength, indicating hole pairing. Due to the crystal-field split among orbitals, the holes primarily reside in one orbital, with the other one remaining half filled. This resembles orbital selective Mott states. The formation of tight hole pairs continues with increasing hole density, as long as the magnetic order remains antiferromagnetic in one direction. The study of pair-pair correlations indicates the dominance of the intraorbital spin-singlet channel, as opposed to other pairing channels. Although in a range of hole doping pairing correlations decay slowly, our results can also be interpreted as corresponding to a charge density wave made of pairs, a precursor of eventual superconductivity after interladder couplings are included. Such a scenario of intertwined orders has been extensively discussed before in the cuprates, and our results suggest a similar physics could exist in ladder iron-based superconductors. Finally, we also show that a robust Hund's coupling is needed for pairing to occur.

A Method to Probe the Interfaces in La2−xSrxCuO4-LaSrAlO4-La2−xSrxCuO4 Trilayer Junctions

C-axis trilayer cuprate Josephson junctions are essential for basic science and digital circuit applications of high-temperature superconductors. We present a method for probing the interface perfection in La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO)-LaSrAlO4 (LSAO)-La2−xSrxCuO4 trilayer junctions. A series of LSCO-LSAO superlattices with atomically smooth surfaces and sharp interfaces were grown by the atomic-layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (ALL-MBE) technique. We have systematically varied the thickness of LSCO and LSAO layers with monolayer precision. By studying the mutual inductance and electrical transport in these superlattices, we detect the non-superconducting (“dead”) layers at the interfaces and quantify their thicknesses. Our results indicate that two optimally doped LSCO monolayers just above and below the one monolayer LSAO barrier are no longer superconducting, rendering the actual barrier thickness of five monolayers. Next, we have shown that introducing a protective highly-overdoped LSCO layer reduces the thickness of dead layers by one or two monolayers.

Pair-breaking scattering interference as a mechanism for superconducting gap modulation

Here we propose the pair-breaking scattering interference as a general source of coherence peak modulations in superconductors. Assuming this mechanism, we present a simple physical picture for the coherence peak modulations in overdoped cuprate Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ (Bi-2223), ferromagnetic iron pnictide EuRbFe 4 As 4 (Eu-1144), and kagome metals AV 3 Sb 5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs). Specifically, we explain the wave vectors, the particle-hole symmetry, and the dependence on the internal or external Zeeman-field of the coherence peak modulations. This paper is intended as a cautious reminder to the scientific community when asserting the existence of a pair density wave phenomenon in the absence of tunneling conductance modulations in the normal state.

Detecting superconductivity out of equilibrium

Recent pump-probe experiments on underdoped cuprates and similar systems suggest the existence of a transient superconducting state above Tc. This poses the question of how to reliably identify the emergence of long-range order, in particular superconductivity, out of equilibrium. We investigate this point by studying a quantum quench in an extended Hubbard model and by computing various observables, which are used to identify (quasi-)long-range order in equilibrium. Our findings imply that, in contrast to current experimental studies, it does not suffice to study the time evolution of the optical conductivity to identify superconductivity. In turn, we suggest to utilize time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments to probe for the formation of a condensate in the two-particle channel.

Tunneling spectroscopy of c -axis epitaxial cuprate junctions

Atomically precise epitaxial structures are unique systems for tunneling spectroscopy that minimize extrinsic effects of disorder. We present a systematic tunneling spectroscopy study, over a broad doping, temperature, and bias range, in epitaxial c-axis La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 /La 2 CuO 4 /La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 heterostructures. The behavior of these superconductor/insulator/superconductor (SIS) devices is unusual. Down to 20 mK there is complete suppression of c-axis Josephson critical current with a barrier of only 2 nm of La 2 CuO 4 , and the zero-bias conductance remains at 20–30% of the normal-state conductance, implying a substantial population of in-gap states. Tunneling spectra show greatly suppressed coherence peaks. Furthermore, as the temperature is raised, the superconducting gap fills in rather than closing at T c . For all doping levels, the spectra show an inelastic tunneling feature at ~80 meV, suppressed as T exceeds T c . These nominally simple epitaxial cuprate junctions deviate markedly from expectations based on the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory.

Relaxation timescales and electron-phonon coupling in optically pumped $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\mathcal{x}}}$ revealed by time-resolved Raman scattering

Time-resolved measurements provide a new way to disentangle complex interactions in quantum materials due to their different timescales. We used pump-probe Raman scattering to investigate the apical oxygen vibration in $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+\mathcal{x}}}$ under nonequilibrium conditions. Time dependence of the phonon population demonstrated strong electron-phonon coupling. Most importantly, the phonon shifts to a higher energy due to transient smearing of the Fermi surface in a remarkable agreement with diagrammatic theory. Here we also discuss insights into photoinduced superconductivity reported at lower doping that follow from these results.

Enhanced superconductivity by near-neighbor attraction in the doped extended Hubbard model

A recent experiment has unveiled an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction in the one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba 2–x Sr x CuO 3+δ . While the effect of the near-neighbor electron attraction V in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain has been examined recently, its effect in the Hubbard model beyond the one-dimensional chain remains unclear. Here, in this work, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of the extended Hubbard model on long four-leg cylinders on the square lattice. We find that the near-neighbor electron attraction V can notably enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations while simultaneously suppressing the charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations. Specifically, for a modestly strong electron attraction, the superconducting correlations become dominant over the CDW correlations with a Luttinger exponent K sc ~1 and strong divergent superconducting susceptibility. Our results provide a promising way to realize long-range superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model. The relevance of our numerical results to cuprate materials is also discussed.

Tractable model of a pair density wave

Here, this Letter describes a simple mechanism for superconducting pairing with finite wave vector (pair density wave) based on weak coupling. The mechanism is illustrated with a quasi-one-dimensional model relevant to certain a class of quasi-one-dimensional materials. Within this model, pair and charge density wave order parameters are intertwined emerging as components of the same matrix field and are related by particle-hole symmetry.
