Finite-temperature coupled cluster: Efficient implementation and application to prototypical systems

In this work, we discuss the theory and implementation of the finite temperature coupled cluster singles and doubles (FT-CCSD) method including the equations necessary for an efficient implementation of response properties. Numerical aspects of the method including the truncation of the orbital space and integration of the amplitude equations are tested on some simple systems, and we provide some guidelines for applying the method in practice. The method is then applied to the 1D Hubbard model, the uniform electron gas (UEG) at warm, dense conditions, and some simple materials. The performance of model systems at high temperatures is encouraging: for the one-dimensional Hubbard model, FT-CCSD provides a qualitatively accurate description of finite-temperature correlation effects even at U = 8, and it allows for the computation of systematically improvable exchange–correlation energies of the warm, dense UEG over a wide range of conditions. We highlight the obstacles that remain in using the method for realistic ab initio calculations on materials

A coupled cluster framework for electrons and phonons

Here, we describe a coupled cluster framework for coupled systems of electrons and harmonic phonons. Neutral and charged excitations are accessed via the equation-of-motion version of the theory. Benchmarks on the Hubbard–Holstein model allow us to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different coupled cluster approximations, which generally perform well for weak to moderate coupling. Finally, we report progress toward an implementation for ab initio calculations on solids and present some preliminary results on finite-size models of diamond with a linear electron–phonon coupling. We also report the implementation of electron–phonon coupling matrix elements from crystalline Gaussian type orbitals within the PySCF program package.

Emulating ab initio computations of infinite nucleonic matter

We construct efficient emulators for the computation of the infinite nuclear matter equation of state. These emulators are based on the subspace-projected coupled-cluster method for which we here develop a new algorithm called small-batch voting to eliminate spurious states that might appear when emulating quantum many-body methods based on a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The efficiency and accuracy of these emulators facilitate a rigorous statistical analysis within which we explore nuclear matter predictions for > 10 6 different parametrizations of a chiral interaction model with explicit Δ -isobars at next-to-next-to leading order. Constrained by nucleon-nucleon scattering phase shifts and bound-state observables of light nuclei up to He 4 , we use history matching to identify nonimplausible domains for the low-energy coupling constants of the chiral interaction. Within these domains we perform a Bayesian analysis using sampling and importance resampling with different likelihood calibrations and study correlations between interaction parameters, calibration observables in light nuclei, and nuclear matter saturation properties. β + Gamow-Teller Strengths from Unstable 14 O via the (d, 2 He) Reaction in Inverse Kinematics

For the first time, the (d, 2 He) reaction was successfully used in inverse kinematics to extract the Gamow-Teller transition strength in the β + direction from an unstable nucleus. The new technique was made possible by the use of an active-target time-projection chamber and a magnetic spectrometer, and opens a path to addressing a range of scientific challenges, including in astrophysics and neutrino physics. Here, in this Letter, the nucleus studied was 14 O, and the Gamow-Teller transition strength to 14 N was extracted up to an excitation energy of 22 MeV. The data were compared to shell-model and state-of-the-art coupled-cluster calculations. Shell-model calculations reproduce the measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution up to about 15 MeV reasonably well, after the application of a phenomenological quenching factor. In a significant step forward to better understand this quenching, the coupled-cluster calculation reproduces the full strength distribution well without such quenching, owing to the large model space, the inclusion of strong correlations, and the coupling of the weak interaction to two nucleons through two-body currents.
