Additive-Induced Morphology Change of Polymer Film Enables Enhanced Charge Mobility and Faster Organic Electrochemical Transistor Switching

Conjugated polymers (CPs) play an important role in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) for bioelectronics and related applications, where they serve as channel materials. Currently, most successful polymers for CPs are re-engineered from traditional CPs by replacing hydrophobic alkyl side chains with hydrophilic ethylene glycol or ionic groups. Frustratingly, the enhanced ion transport often compromises the charge mobility of the original CP. In this work, we present an additive-mediated method to construct a modified poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film to enable efficient ion migration. The additive is designed with a cleavable diazo group that releases nitrogen and 2-methoxyethanol, a volatile compound, to alter the P3HT film morphology. OECTs based on the film exhibit improved response times. Interestingly, the process also enhances the crystallinity of P3HT, leading to higher hole mobility compared with pristine P3HT. This study proposes an in situ strategy to achieve the functionality of the OMIEC via morphological regulation, offering a promising route to simultaneously enhance both ion accessibility and charge mobility.

Polymerized Small Molecular Acceptor with Branched Side Chains for All Polymer Solar Cells with Efficiency over 16.7%

The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of small molecule acceptor (SMA)-based organic solar cells have already exceeded 18%. However, the development of polymer acceptors still lags far behind their SMA counterparts mainly due to the lack of efficient polymer acceptors. In this work, a series of polymer acceptors named PY-X (with X being the branched alkyl chain) are designed and synthesized by employing the same central core with the SMA L8-BO but with different branched alkyl chains on the pyrrole motif. It is found that the molecular packing of SMA-HD featuring 2-hexyldecyl side chain used in the synthesis of PY-HD is similar to L8-BO, in which the branched alkyl chains lead to condensed and high-order molecular assembly in SMA-HD molecules. When combined with PM6, PY-HD-based all polymer solar cell (all-PSC) exhibits a high PCE of 16.41%, representing the highest efficiency for the binary all-PSCs. Moreover, the side-chain modification on the pyrrole site position further improves the performance of the all-PSCs, and the PY-DT-based device delivers a new record high efficiency of 16.76% (certified as 16.3%). The work provides new insights for understanding the structure–property relationship of polymer acceptors and paves a feasible avenue to develop efficient conjugated polymer acceptors.

Quinonoid versus Aromatic π-Conjugated Oligomers and Polymers and Their Diradical Characters

Quinonoid elements in π-conjugated oligomers and polymers have promising characteristics by providing unique structures and electronic properties, including varying degrees of ground state open shell diradical character and small band gaps. So far, quinonoid ground state polymers were rarely identified, and one of the goals of this work was to expand the portfolio of such systems in which over 17 different repeat units were considered, about half preferred a quinonoid and half preferred aromatic structures plus several with the alternating A-Q composition were also included. The dependency of the diradical character as a function of size and composition opens a rich space to discover trends affecting the aromaticity and diradical character. Herein, we show that the diradical character is a useful parameter to classify a wide variety of polymers based on their ground states in a systematic study of a large number of homo- and heterosystems. Homo-polymers with quinonoid ground states show a high diradical character, while those with the aromatic ground state behave as closed-shell systems with no or a very small diradical character. The diradical character of quinonoid systems depends strongly on the size, which increases with the size of the oligomer. Here, we found a correlation between the diradical character and the interring C–C distance as well as the singlet–triplet energy gaps. In alternating copolymers mixing quinonoid and aromatic subunits, we found open-shell hetero-polymers with moderate to high diradical characters.

Photochemical approaches to ordered polymers

The photocyclization of o-benzyloxyphenyl ketone chromophores provides an efficient, high yield route to the synthesis of 2,3-diphenylbenzofurans. The synthesis and solution of photochemistry of a series of polymers containing this chromophore is described. The photocuring of these polymers is a potential new approach to the synthesis of highly conjugated polymers based upon a p-phenylene bisbenzofuran repeat unit.

Synthesis of Poly(bisisoindigo) Using a Metal-Free Aldol Polymerization for Thin-Film Transistor Applications

Typical syntheses of conjugated polymers rely heavily on organometallic reagents and metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. In this paper, we show that an environmentally benign aldol polymerization can be used to synthesize poly(bisisoindigo), an analog of polyisoindigo with a ring-fused structural repeat unit. Owing to its extended conjugation length, poly(bisisoindigo) absorbs across the UV/vis/NIR spectrum, with an absorption tail that reaches 1000 nm. Due to the four electron-deficient lactam units on each repeat unit, poly(bisoindigo) possesses a low-lying LUMO, which lies at -3.94 eV relative to vacuum. Incorporation of the ring-fused monomer unit also lowered the overall torsional strain in the polymer backbone (relative to polyisoindigo), and the polymer was successfully used in prototype unipolar n-channel organic thin-film transistors.

Evolution of Chain Dynamics and Oxidation States with Increasing Chain Length for a Donor–Acceptor-Conjugated Oligomer Series

While it is known that the chain length strongly affects the properties of π-conjugated polymers, the effects of chain length on the molecular structure, chain conformation, and oxidation state properties in donor–acceptor-type conjugated structures remain unclear. This limits our understanding of how the polymer molecular weight impacts material properties. Here, a discrete and monodisperse oligomer series (n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, and 21) and polymers (nPB), composed of the donor 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT), the acceptor benzothiadiazole (BTD), and methylthio end-capping groups, are synthesized by C–H-activated cross-coupling. The molecular structure, molecular weight, and dispersity of each oligomer/polymer are thoroughly characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. This series reveals a rod-to-coil transition at n = 15 and coil formation at polymer length scales of ~28 units via solution small-angle neutron scattering characterization. The oxidation states are deciphered via cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, spectroelectrochemistry, and density functional theory calculations. Oligomers 3–9 undergo successive one-electron oxidation steps, while 15 and higher undergo multielectron oxidations per step in CH 2 Cl 2 –TBAPF6 at a Pt ultramicroelectrode. The electronic transition of each oxidation state (1+, 2+, 3+, etc.) is tracked by absorption spectroscopy, revealing a “bipolaron to di-polaron” transition at n = 7 at which shorter oligomers prefer bipolaron formation and longer oligomers prefer di-polaron formation in their dication states. Furthermore, oxidized 15 has a lower electronic transition energy compared to its polymer homologue, as shown by spectroelectrochemistry, revealing a synergy between the chain length and the oxidation state properties. This study proves that the convergence limit between small molecule and polymer behavior occurs at approximately 15 units and highlights the property transitions that occur as a function of chain length for a donor–acceptor class of conjugated organic materials.

Polaron Delocalization in Donor–Acceptor Polymers and its Impact on Organic Electrochemical Transistor Performance

Abstract Donor–acceptor (D‐A) polymers are promising materials for organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), as they minimize detrimental faradaic side‐reactions during OECT operation, yet their steady‐state OECT performance still lags far behind their all‐donor counterparts. We report three D‐A polymers based on the diketopyrrolopyrrole unit that afford OECT performances similar to those of all‐donor polymers, hence representing a significant improvement to the previously developed D‐A copolymers. In addition to improved OECT performance, DFT simulations of the polymers and their respective hole polarons also reveal a positive correlation between hole polaron delocalization and steady‐state OECT performance, providing new insights into the design of OECT materials. Importantly, we demonstrate how polaron delocalization can be tuned directly at the molecular level by selection of the building blocks comprising the polymers’ conjugated backbone, thus paving the way for the development of even higher performing OECT polymers.

All‐Polymer Bulk‐Heterojunction Organic Electrochemical Transistors with Balanced Ionic and Electronic Transport

Abstract The rapid development of organic electrochemical transistor (OECTs)‐based circuits brings new opportunities for next‐generation integrated bioelectronics. The all‐polymer bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) offers an attractive, inexpensive alternative to achieve efficient ambipolar OECTs, and building blocks of logic circuits constructed from them, but have not been investigated to date. Here, the first all‐polymer BHJ‐based OECTs are reported, consisting of a blend of new p‐type ladder conjugated polymer and a state‐of‐the‐art n‐type ladder polymer. The whole ladder‐type polymer BHJ also proves that side chains are not necessary for good ion transport. Instead, the polymer nanostructures play a critical role in the ion penetration and transportation and thus in the device performance. It also provides a facile strategy and simplifies the fabrication process, forgoing the need to pattern multiple active layers. In addition, the development of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐like OECTs allows the pursuit of advanced functional logic circuitry, including inverters and NAND gates, as well as for amplifying electrophysiology signals. This work opens a new approach to the design of new materials for OECTs and will contribute to the development of organic heterojunctions for ambipolar OECTs toward high‐performing logic circuits.

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Oligomers and Chains of Poly(benzodifurandione) (PBDF), A Highly Conducting n-Type Polymer

The seminal development of highly electrically conducting polyacetylene via oxidative or reductive treatment (“doping”) has continuously inspired the search for other conducting π-conjugated polymers. Recently, poly(benzodifurandione), PBDF, was reported to have unexpected solubility given the absence of side chains and to exhibit an unprecedented, high electrical conductivity upon reduction (“n-doping”), with protons acting as counterions. Here, we theoretically investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of PBDF by taking long oligomers and one-dimensional (1D) periodic chains as model systems. With the oligomer models, we characterize the formation of polarons and bipolarons in n-doped PBDF. Our results indicate that singlet bipolarons tend to be the energetically most favorable species when protons bind to two closely located carbonyl groups in nearest-neighbor benzodifurandione moieties. The calculations on the 1D periodic chain models show that the positions of the protonated carbonyl groups determine the metallic, semiconducting, or insulating nature of a PBDF chain. When the protonated carbonyl groups are all situated on the same side of a PBDF chain, a stable helical chain configuration is found that exhibits ferromagnetic behavior. Our findings elucidate the mechanism of polaron and bipolaron formation in long oligomers of n-doped PBDF and highlight the fascinating electronic and magnetic properties of periodic 1D chains. Furthermore, these studies also provide a stepping stone for investigations of PBDF thin films, for which two- and three-dimensional structures must be considered.

Toward the Prediction and Control of Glass Transition Temperature for Donor–Acceptor Polymers

Semiconducting donor–acceptor (D–A) polymers have attracted considerable attention toward the application of organic electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, a rational design rule for making semiconducting polymers with desired thermal and mechanical properties is currently lacking, which greatly limits the development of new polymers for advanced applications. Here, polydiketopyrrolopyrrole (PDPP)-based D–A polymers with varied alkyl side-chain lengths and backbone moieties are systematically designed, followed by investigating their thermal and thin film mechanical responses. The experimental results show a reduction in both elastic modulus and glass transition temperature (Tg) with increasing side-chain length, which is further verified through coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. Informed from experimental results, a mass-per-flexible bond model is developed to capture such observation through a linear correlation between Tg and polymer chain flexibility. Using this model, a wide range of backbone Tg over 80 °C and elastic modulus over 400 MPa can be predicted for PDPP-based polymers. This study highlights the important role of side-chain structure in influencing the thermomechanical performance of conjugated polymers, and provides an effective strategy to design and predict Tg and elastic modulus of future new D–A polymers.

Engineering Supramolecular Polymer Conformation for Efficient Carbon Nanotube Sorting

Supramolecular polymer sorting is a promising approach to separating single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by electronic type. Unlike conjugated polymers, they can be easily removed from the CNTs after sorting by breaking the supramolecular bonds, allowing for isolation of electronically pristine CNTs as well as facile recycling of the sorting polymer. However, little is understood about how supramolecular polymer properties affect CNT sorting. Herein, chain stoppers are used to engineer the conformation of a supramolecular sorting polymer, thereby elucidating the relationship between sorting efficacy and polymer conformation. Through NMR and UV–vis spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and thermodynamic modeling, it is shown that this supramolecular polymer exhibits ring–chain equilibrium, and that this equilibrium can be skewed toward chains by the addition of chain stoppers. Furthermore, by controlling the stopper–monomer ratio, the sorting yield can be doubled from 7% to 14% without compromising the semiconducting purity (>99%) or properties of sorted CNTs.

Aqueous processing of organic semiconductors enabled by stable nanoparticles with built-in surfactants

The introduction of oligoether side chains onto a polymer backbone can help to stabilise polymeric dispersions in water without the necessity of surfactants or additives when conjugated polymer nanoparticles are prepared. A series of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) derivatives with different content of a polar thiophene derivative 3-((2-methoxyethoxy)methyl)thiophene was interrogated to find the effect of the polar chains on the stability of the formed nanoparticles, as well as their structural, optical, electrochemical, and electrical properties. Findings indicated that incorporation of 10–20 percent of the polar side chain led to particles that are stable over a period of 42 days, with constant particle size and polydispersity, however the particles from the polymer with 30 percent polar side chain showed aggregation effects. The polymer dispersions showed a stronger solid-like behaviour in water with decreasing polar side chain content, while thin film deposition from water was found to afford globular morphologies and crystallites with more isotropic orientation compared to conventional solution-processed films. As a proof-of-principle, field-effect transistors were fabricated directly from the aqueous dispersions demonstrating that polymers with hydrophilic moieties can be processed in water without the requirement of surfactants.

Polydiacetylene thin films for nonlinear optical applications

One very promising class of organic compounds for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications are polydiacetylenes, which are novel in that they are highly conjugated polymers which can also be crystalline. Polydiacetylenes offer several advantages over other organic materials: because of their highly conjugated electronic structures, they are capable of possessing large optical nonlinearities with fast response times; because they are crystalline, they can be highly ordered, which is essential for optimizing their NLO properties; and, last, because they are polymeric, they can be formed as thin films, which are useful for device fabrication. We have actively been carrying out ground-based research on several compounds of interest.
