The design of a source to simulate the gamma-ray spectrum emitted by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator

A simulated source was designed to duplicate the gamma spectrum of a uniform cylindrical 2200-watt Pu02 radioisotope thermoelectric generator containing 81% Pu-238 and 1.2 ppm Pu-236. Gamma rays from the decay of Pu-238, Am-241, Pu-239, and the 0-18(alpha,n)Ne-21 reaction were catalogued in broad energy groups. Two 46- and one 22-mc Th-228 sources provided simulation at various times in the life of the fuel capsule up to 18 years, which covers the time span of an outer planet mission. Emission from Th-228 represents the overwhelming contribution of the gamma spectrum after the first few years. The sources, in the form of 13-inch rods, were placed in a concentric hole in a cylinder of depleted uranium, which provided shielding equivalent to the self-shielding of the fuel capsule. The thickness of the U-238 cylinder (0.55cm) was determined by Monte Carlo calculations to insure that the spectrum emerging from the simulated source matched that of the fuel capsule.

Geology of Utah and Nevada by ERTS imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Imagery for a portion of the study area was received, catalogued for in-house availability, and examined for relevant data. Topographic, geologic, aeromagnetic, and gravity maps were gathered to form a basis of comparison. Overlay drawings were prepared indicating significant features for further study and eventual field checking. The number of significant observations appears to be very great, and it is apparent that methods of handling the acquired information for easy access, for planning field checks, and for final presentation, must be improved. The tracing of lithologic variations and contacts is readily noted on many of the images. Some of the features vary from what is shown on geological maps but the correlation, or lack of same, is still to be studied in the field and by comparison of ground truth geological maps with the specific images. Numerous lineaments, based on tonal differences, are noted in the districts, some of which extend for tens of kilometers. Several positive and negative magnetic anomalies are noted with the suggestion that the sources of the mineralizing fluids were derived from hidden intrusives.

Application of ERTS-1 data to the protection and management of New Jersey's coastal environment

The author has identified the following significant results. This catalogue was prepared as a part of the joint ERTS-1 New Jersey coastal mapping experiment. First look analysis of ERTS-1 images indicates that numerous coastal oceanographic patterns can be mapped on a sequential basis using ERTS-1 images. Analysis of imagery indicates a predominant southwesterly drift of dumped wasted in the surface waters. Initial analysis of imagery indicates that the effects of tidal flushing of New York harbor extend as far south as Long Branch, New Jersey. Analysis of imagery from 3 September, 1972, indicates a wide band of turbid water extending several miles offshore around Barnegat Inlet. First look analysis of imagery from 10 October, 1972, illustrates the increased reflectance of turbid waters within the bays, sounds, and thoroughfares behind the barrier islands in the southern New Jersey shore area. The estuarine waters emanating from both Brigantine and Absecon Inlets are very turbid relative to the waters further offshore and to the north and south. The tidal prism appears to be quite large but the movement of water once outside the inlets is not very rapid. The waters are not moving away from the coastline but rather along the coast.

Determination of land use in Minnesota by automatic interpretation of ERTS MSS data

This program aims to determine the feasibility of identifying land use in Minnesota by automatic interpretation of ERTS-MSS data. Ultimate objectives include establishment of land use delineation and quantification by computer processing with a minimum of human operator interaction. This implies not only that reflectivity as a function of calendar time can be catalogued effectively, but also that the effects of uncontrolled variables can be identified and compensated. Clouds are the major uncontrollable data pollutant, so part of the initial effort is devoted to determining their effect and the construction of a model to help correct or justifiably ignore affected data. Other short range objectives are to identify and verify measurements giving results of importance to land managers. Lake-counting is a prominent example. Open water is easily detected in band 7 data with some support from either band 4 or band 5 to remove ambiguities. Land managers and conservationists commission studies periodically to measure water bodies and total water count within specified areas.

Analysis of data on absorption in the northern part of the milky way

The values of absorption for different galactic longitudes are obtained on the basis of star cluster data. It is found that the distance up to the point, where the straightening of the absorption distribution curve begins, depends on the limiting magnitude of the catalogue and the density of absorbing matter near the sun. The picture of absorbing matter distribution in the northern part of the Milky Way is given.

Geological survey of Maryland using EREP flight data

The author has identified the following significant results. Underflight photography has been used in the Baltimore County mined land inventory to determine areas of disturbed land where surface mining of sand and ground clay, or stone has taken place. Both active and abandoned pits and quarries were located. Aircraft data has been used to update cultural features of Calvert, Caroline, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, and Wicomico Counties. Islands have been located and catalogued for comparison with older film and map data for erosion data. Strip mined areas are being mapped to obtain total area disturbed to aid in future mining and reclamation problems. Coastal estuarine and Atlantic Coast features are being studied to determine nearshore bedforms, sedimentary, and erosional patterns, and manmade influence on natural systems.

Parts, Materials, and Processes Experience Summary

The ALERT program, a system for communicating common problems with parts, materials, and processes, is condensed and catalogued. Expanded information on selected topics is provided by relating the problem area (failure) to the cause, the investigations and findings, the suggestions for avoidance (inspections, screening tests, proper part applications), and failure analysis procedures. The basic objective of ALERT is the avoidance of the recurrence of parts, materials, and processed problems, thus improving the reliability of equipment produced for and used by the government.

Solar radio observations in support of Skylab A

The solar radio spectra were recorded in real time, both on film and magnetic tape, during the period from November 1972 to February 1974. A catalogue of the observations is given for the frequency range 565-1000 MHz and includes descriptions of the bursts, intensity scales, and pertinent remarks. Some theoretical considerations resulting from the research are given. Equipment modified for the experiment is described and the text of the final report which summarizes the research on type IV solar radio bursts is included.

Chromospheric flares and sudden commencements of geomagnetic storms

A catalogue of flare activity was compiled during 1957-1967 (the solar activity cycle). By comparing all reliable SC during this period with chromospheric flares, the following conclusions are drawn; (1) There is no statistically significant correlation between SC and chromospheric flares. (2) The assumption that a shock wave propagates throughout the entire hemisphere is unjustified and contradicts the fact of recurrence of SC. (3) A statistically significant correlation was established between SC and chromospheric flares, that is, a relationship between a SC and the moment that a flare active region transits the Central Meridian. (4) SC are caused by shock waves or tangential discontinuities formed at the western boundary of the quasisteady directed corpuscular flux or at the boundary between sectors.

Selenographic control

Evaluation of selenographic data obtained with use of different observational means requires the formulation of rigorous algorithms connecting the systems of coordinates, which the various methods have been referred to. The lunar principal axes of inertia are suggested as most appropriate for reference in lunar mapping and selenographic coordinate catalogues. The connection between the instantaneous axis of lunar rotation (involved in laser ranging, radar studies, astronomical observations from the surface of the moon and VLBI observations of ALSEPs), the ecliptic system of coordinates (which in reductions of observations was considered as fixed in space), the 'Cassini' mean selenographic coordinates (to which physical libration measures were referred), the lunar principal axes of inertia, and the invariable plane of the solar system is discussed.

The Automated Astronomic Positioning System (AAPS)

Two prototype systems of The Automated Astronomic Positioning System (AAPS) have been delivered to Defense Mapping Agency (DMA). The AAPS was developed to automate and expedite the determination of astronomic positions (latitude and longitude). This equipment is capable of defining astronomic positions to an accuracy sigma = 0.3 in each component within a two hour span of stellar observations which are acquired automatically. The basic concept acquires observations by timing stellar images as they cross a series of slits, comparing these observations to a stored star catalogue, and automatically deducing position and accuracy by least squares using pre-set convergence criteria. An exhaustive DMA operational test program has been initiated to evaluate the capabilities of the AAPS in a variety of environments (both climatic and positional). Status of the operational test is discussed.

Isolated Stroemgren spheres as a source of galactic H alpha emission

The isolated H alpha emission features reported by Reynolds et al. are identified with Stroemgren spheres surrounding observed O stars; the root mean square electron densities and Stroemgren radii are calculated from the observed emission measure and stellar type. The density has an average value of 2 per cu cm but increases to 3.3 per cu cm for stars within 200 pc of the galactic plane. An analysis of the Catalogue of Galactic O Stars shows that enhanced H alpha emission is observed around all known O stars. The diffuse component of H alpha emission is what one would expect from the line-of-sight overlapping of isolated Stroemgren spheres surrounding B stars and appears to correlate with features on extinction maps, as derived. There is no compelling reason to suggest any large-scale intercloud ionization from H alpha data alone.

Investigation of structure-property relationships in systematic series of novel polymers

Solid state transitions in polymeric materials was associated with the onset of sub-molecular motions of the polymer chains. Although these were considered to be intramolecular in general, the local environment of the polymer molecule exerts a strong influence through, for example, the effects of crystallinity, polarity and diluents. The manner of specimen preparation and previous history also affect transitions. The transitions are considered to arise when sufficient free volume is available to permit the occurrence of these side chain and backbone reorientations. The glass transition is the principal transition of amorphous polymeric materials and is associated with the onset of long range segmental motion of the polymer backbone. The various types of shorter range motion occurring below the glass transition have been catalogued.
