Proposal for a Sample Pilot Response Model

Regulations to establish operational and performance requirements for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are being developed by a consortium of government, industry and academic institutions. Those requirements will apply to the new detect and avoid (DAA) systems and other equipment necessary to integrate UAS with the National Airspace System (NAS) and are determined according to their contribution to the overall safety case for such an integration. In order to perform end-to-end verification and validation of DAA requirements, a committee accepted pilot response model is needed to emulate UAS pilots in closed-loop Monte Carlo fast-time simulations. This briefing focuses on background of the pilot model used in previous Airspace Concept Evaluation System studies, identification of strengths and weaknesses in that model, and proposals on model improvements. The briefing also looks to build consensus around a common architecture and assumptions for modeling the pilot for UAS DAA systems.

Teleoperation of Construction Robots Using Human Interaction: Case Study Examples: Preprint

The integration of advanced teleoperation methods in construction robotics has the potential to enhance productivity and safety in demanding environments. Among different methods, hand gestures have emerged as an intuitive approach, enabling seamless communication between human operators and robotic systems. This study demonstrates the use of hand gestures for controlling a model robotic excavator and a virtual robotic arm in construction applications. Two case study examples are presented. In the first case study, a series of hand gestures are performed to control a model robotic excavator's bucket and arm movements. The second case study focuses on using hand gestures to control a virtual robotic arm to perform a material handling task in a simulated environment. In both cases, the performed hand gestures are all successfully captured and interpreted by the gesture-based teleoperation method to conduct the corresponding tasks, which demonstrates the application of the gesture-based control method for various types of construction robots. Also, the limitations of the gesture-based teleoperation method (e.g., recognition delay, sensitivity to motion outliers) are discussed. Future work will focus on developing a digital twin system to support gesture-based teleoperation for a wider range of construction robots.

Alternating Conditional Expectations: Introducing a Non‐Parametric Statistical Method to Interpret Long‐Term Greenhouse Gas Flux Measurements Over Semi‐Arid and Wetland Ecosystems

Abstract We explore the potential of using a non‐parametric statistical method called Alternating Conditional Expectations, ACE, to quantify functional relationships in biogeosciences. Here, ACE is used to quantify the non‐linear and multi‐faceted responses of greenhouse gas fluxes to a set of biophysical forcings, when the shapes of those response surfaces are unknown. We evaluated the statistical method over two contrasting ecosystems and two contrasting time steps. One case involved quantifying the biophysical controls of water vapor and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) fluxes over a semi‐arid oak savanna using daily integrated fluxes. The other case evaluated the responses of CO 2 and methane (CH 4 ) flux measurements to a set of biophysical forcings at a restored tidal wetland using thirty‐minute averages. The statistical model, based on 4 independent variables, explained up over 90% of the variation in daily integrated flux densities of water vapor and net carbon dioxide exchange at the savanna site. This fit was defined by distinct non‐linear responses to such drivers as gross primary production, photosynthetically active radiation, air temperature, vapor pressure deficit and soil moisture. At the tidal wetland site, we evaluated net carbon dioxide and methane fluxes with short‐term measurements to capture the influence of rising and falling tides and seasonality in biological activity. The statistical model defined the shape of the forcing of fluxes due to the roles of carbon exudates, water table depth, oxygen level in the water column, temperature and vegetation status. The statistical fits of the greenhouse gas fluxes were less precise than the savanna case. The fetch varies on a run‐to‐run basis as it is comprised of a heterogeneous mosaic of open water and vegetation. Furthermore, it is difficult to monitor the environmental conditions of the archaea and bacteria in the sediments that produce methane and carbon dioxide.

A new treatment of the albedo radiation pressure in the case of a uniform albedo and of a spherical satellite

The purpose of this paper is to present a model for the radiation pressure acceleration of a spherical satellite, due to the radiation reflected by a planet with a uniform albedo. A particular choice of variables allows one to reduce the surface integrals over the lit portion of the planet visible to the satellite to one-dimensional integrals. Exact analytical expressions are found for the integrals corresponding to the case where the spacecraft does not 'see' the terminator. The other integrals can be computer either numerically, or analytical in an approximate form. The results are compared with those of Lochry (1966). The model is applied to Magellan, a spacecraft orbiting Venus.

Bayesian estimation of life parameters in the Weibull distribution.

Development of a Bayesian analysis of the scale and shape parameters in the Weibull distribution and the corresponding reliability function with respect to the usual life-testing procedures. For the scale parameter theta, Bayesian estimates of theta and reliability are obtained for the uniform, exponential, and inverted gamma prior probability densities. Bhattacharya's results (1967) for the one-parameter exponential life-testing distribution are reduced to a special case of these results. A fully Bayesian analysis of both the scale and shape parameters is developed by assuming independent prior distributions; since in the latter case, analytical tractability is not possible, Bayesian estimates are obtained through a conjunction of Monte Carlo simulation and numerical-integration techniques. In both cases, a computer simulation is carried out, and a comparison is made between the Bayesian and the corresponding minimum-variance unbiased, or maximum likelihood, estimates. As expected, the Bayesian estimates are superior.

Enhance BISON Metal Fuel Transient Models and Enable Assessment Based on Out-of-Pile Transient Experiments

In this report, the activities and achievements made by Argonne National Laboratory for the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) BISON code metallic fuel validation and verification (V&V) project in FY2023, with a focus on the capability development and assessment case development for the out-of-pile transient experiments, are summarized. The liquid cladding penetration model was improved based on a comprehensive set of fuel behavior test apparatus (FBTA) test results. The new model was implemented into BISON along with a simple model to account for fuel melting effects. The metallic fuel meshing capability was also upgraded to allow local refinement using unstructured triangular mesh. Based on the previous success in developing the BISON-FIPD integration powered BISON assessment case, this database enabled BISON evaluation and V&V capability was expanded to the out-of-pile transient experiments by introducing BISON-OPTD integration. A series of initial out-of-pile transient assessment cases were implemented into BISON to provide powerful platforms to evaluate current BISON’s capabilities in simulating metallic fuel performance during out-of-pile transients. The established capabilities will also benefit the calibration and V&V of future advanced mechanistic models.

Investigation of Transient Gas Phase Column Density Due to Droplet Evaporation

Analytical expressions are developed for estimating column density near a rapidly evaporating droplet along general paths. The influence for instantaneous evaporation is created first as a limiting case, where the peak value occurs at the time it takes a wave of vapor to reach the closest point along the optical path traveling at its most probable thermal speed. Next the case for finite-period evaporation is evaluated for constant conditions. Compared to the instantaneous case, peak column density occurs shortly after droplet extinction at a lower intensity. A new mathematical function is discovered that solves the integrals associated with this case. Finally, ways to account for droplet motion and changes in evaporation rate with size and temperature are discussed.

Investigation of Transient Gas Phase Column Density Due to Droplet Evaporation

A NASA robotic refueling mission experiment on board the International Space Station (ISS) was designed to repeatedly transfer simulated cryogenic propellant between two dewars. After each metered transfer, the cryogen was to be vented overboard via sublimation or evaporation. ISS payload providers must conduct analyses to demonstrate that any planned gaseous venting generate no more than a certain level of material that may interfere with optical measurements from other payloads that may be located nearby. This requirement is expressed in terms of a maximum column number density (CND). For the experiment under consideration, fluid droplets likely would accompany any such vapor. Earlier related studies led to development of analytical expressions for column density along general paths for a number of practical cases under steady conditions, including droplet evaporation. These expressions are not appropriate for rapid evaporation of small droplets however, since the droplets cannot sustain mass flow rates consistent with steady conditions. In this work, analytical expressions are developed for estimating column density near a rapidly evaporating droplet along general paths. The influence for instantaneous evaporation is created first as a limiting case, where it is found the peak value occurs at the time it takes a wave of vapor to reach the closest point along the optical path traveling at its most probable thermal speed. Next, the case for finite-period evaporation is evaluated for constant conditions. Compared to the instantaneous case, peak column density occurs shortly after droplet extinction, but at a lower intensity. A new mathematical function is discovered that solves the integrals associated with this case. Finally, ways to account for droplet motion and changes in evaporation rate with size and temperature are discussed in this framework.

A Machine Learning–Based Tire Life Prediction Framework for Increasing Life of Commercial Vehicle Tires

In the commercial freight industry, tire retreading decisions are often conservative due to limited knowledge of a tire’s remaining service life. This practice leads to increased costs and material waste. This paper proposes a machine learning–based approach for estimating tire casing life and retreadability, focusing on usage data rather than wear information. This approach could extend the tire’s lifespan and reduce landfill waste. Data integration from diverse tire casing measurement sources presents challenges, including imbalanced removal data. Our methodology addresses these challenges by using historical inspection, telematics, and finite element modeling (FEM) datasets. We introduce “Tire Casing Energy” as a comprehensive usage input and apply a Variance-Reduction Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (VR-SMOTE) for data imbalance rectification. A random forest model is used to estimate the state of the tire casing and the casing removal probability, with Bayesian optimization applied for hyperparameter tuning, enhancing model accuracy. Here, the proposed prediction framework is able to differentiate different truck fleets and tire locations based on their usage parameters. With the aid of this machine learning model, the importance and sensitivity of different tire usage parameters can be obtained, which is beneficial to maximize tire life.

A method of weighted residuals with trigonometric basis functions for sound transmission in circular ducts

The method of weighted residuals (MWR) in the form of a modified Galerkin method with trigonometric basis functions is used to compute the transmission of sound in an axisymmetric duct. The method is used to generate the axial wave number for uniform ducts. These are compared with exact solutions generated by a formal eigenvalue routine in the hard-wall case and a Runge-Kutta integration eigenvalue scheme in the soft-wall case. The method is applicable to both flow and no-flow cases.

On the integration of image sources in exact image method of field analysis

Convergence conditions of image integration in the exact image method of field calculation have been investigated, and the method is extended to include more general media than previously considered. It is demonstrated that the integral is well behaved and the method works best when the field is calculated in a medium with less loss. If the medium has more loss, it is shown that the image line may enter the improper half-space and still produce valid results. Means of correctly selecting the integration path branch for the case of crossing branch cuts of the Green function in complex integration planes are proposed.

Boolean differentiation and integration using Karnaugh maps

Algorithms are presented for differentiation and integration of Boolean functions by means of Karnaugh maps. The algorithms are considered simple when the number of variables is six or less; in this case Boolean differentiation and integration is said to be as easy as the Karnaugh map method of simplifying switching functions. It is suggested that the algorithms would be useful in the analysis of faults in combinational systems and in the synthesis of asynchronous sequential systems which utilize edge-sensitive flip-flops.

Laminar natural convection under nonuniform gravity.

Laminar natural convection is analyzed for cases in which gravity varies with the distance from the leading edge of an isothermal plate. The study includes situations in which gravity varies by virtue of the varying slope of a surface. A general integral solution method which includes certain known integral solutions as special cases is developed to account for arbitrary position-dependence of gravity. A series method of solution is also developed for the full equations. Although it is more cumbersome it provides verification of the integral method.

Three-dimensional hypersonic transitional/turbulent mean flow profiles.

Detailed three-dimensional compressible transitional/turbulent boundary-layer profiles are presented for use as test cases in numerical and integral calculation procedures. The profiles were obtained from tests conducted in the Mach 20 leg of the Langley High Reynolds Number Helium Facility. The presented data represent an arduous test case for analytical prediction methods, since 'low Reynolds number' and precursor transition effects should probably be accounted for to accurately predict the boundary-layer growth and development.
