Ceramic coating effect on liner metal temperatures of film-cooled annular combustor

An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted to determine the effect of a ceramic coating on the average metal temperatures of full annular, film cooled combustion chamber liner. The investigation was conducted at pressures from 0.50 to 0.062. At all test conditions, experimental results indicate that application of a ceramic coating will result in significantly lower wall temperatures. In a simplified heat transfer analysis, agreement between experimental and calculated liner temperatures was achieved. Simulated spalling of a small portion of the ceramic coating resulted in only small increases in liner temperature because of the thermal conduction of heat from the hotter, uncoated liner metal.

Digital controller design: Analysis of the annular suspension pointing system

The Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) is a payload auxiliary pointing device of the Space Shuttle. The ASPS is comprised of two major subassemblies, a vernier and a coarse pointing subsystem. The experiment is attached to a mounting plate/rim combination which is suspended on magnetic bearing/actuators (MBA) strategically located about the rim. Fine pointing is achieved by gimballing the plate/rim within the MBA gaps. Control about the experiment line-of-sight is obtained through the use of a non-contacting rim drive and positioning torquer. All sensors used to close the servo loops on the vernier system are noncontacting elements. Therefore, the experiment is a free-flyer constrained only by the magnetic forces generated by the control loops.

An Experimental Investigation of Forced Mixing of a Turbulent Boundary Layer in an Annular Diffuser

The forced mixing process of a turbulent boundary layer in an axisymmetric annular diffuser using conventional wing-like vortex generators was studied. Flow field measurements were made at four axial locations downstream of the vortex generators. At each axial location, a total of 25 equally spaced profiles were measured behind three consecutive vortex generators which formed two pairs of vortex generators. Hot film anemometry probes measured the boundary layer turbulence structure at the same locations where pressure measurements were made. Both single and cross film probes were used. The diffuser turbulence data was teken only for a nominal inlet Mach number of 0.3. Three vortex generator configurations were tested. The differences between configurations involved changes in size and relative vortex generator positions. All three vortex generator configurations tested provided increases in diffuser performance. Distinct differences in the boundary layer integral properties and skin friction levels were noted between configurations. The axial turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress profiles measured displayed similarities in trends but differences in levels for the three configurations.

The modeling and design of the Annular Suspension and Pointing System /ASPS/

The Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) is a payload auxiliary pointing device of the Space Shuttle. The ASPS is comprised of two major subassemblies, a vernier and a coarse pointing subsystem. The three functions provided by the ASPS are related to the pointing of the payload, centering the payload in the magnetic actuator assembly, and tracking the payload mounting plate and shuttle motions by the coarse gimbals. The equations of motion of a simplified planar model of the ASPS are derived. Attention is given to a state diagram of the dynamics of the ASPS with position-plus-rate controller, the nonlinear spring characteristic for the wire-cable torque of the ASPS, the design of the analog ASPS through decoupling and pole placement, and the time response of different components of the continuous control system.

Stiffness of straight and tapered annular gas path seals

Radial stiffness of annular (ring-type) gas path seals is calculated for both constant-clearance designs and tapered designs for which the inlet clearance is larger than the outlet clearance. Under some conditions a constant-clearance seal can have a negative stiffness; this undesirable property can be completely eliminated by use of tapered seals. Leakage rates are only moderately higher in tapered seals

Magnetic suspension system for a laboratory model annular momentum control device

Feasibility of the annular momentum control device (AMCD) for the control and stabilization of spacecraft is presented. The AMCD is momentum storage equipment consisting of a thin rim, magnetically suspended and rotated by noncontacting electromagnetic actuators. The laboratory model AMCD, the rim, and the magnetic suspension system are described, along with their evaluation tests. Because it utilizes permanent magnet flux biased magnetic bearing elements, the original laboratory model magnetic suspension system produced control limitations, and a new suspension system which used zero flux bias was designed and fabricated. Tests of the improved system show that a medium control loop bandwidth is required to achieve stability at low rim velocities, but at higher rim speed the bandwidth of the control loop interacts with bending modes of the rim and causes instability. Decreasing the bandwidth by changing to a precession control mode is discussed, and the results of such a computer simulation are presented.

Stability analysis of a liquid fuel annular combustion chamber

High frequency combustion instability problems in a liquid fuel annular combustion chamber are examined. A modified Galerkin method was used to produce a set of modal amplitude equations from the general nonlinear partial differential acoustic wave equation in order to analyze the problem of instability. From these modal amplitude equations, the two variable perturbation method was used to develop a set of approximate equations of a given order of magnitude. These equations were modeled to show the effects of velocity sensitive combustion instabilities by evaluating the effects of certain parameters in the given set of equations.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE). Double-annular clean combustor technology development report

A sector combustor technology development program was conducted to define an advanced double annular dome combustor sized for use in the quiet clean short haul experimental engine (QCSEE). A design which meets the emission goals, and combustor performance goals of the QCSEE engine program was developed. Key design features were identified which resulted in substantial reduction in carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emission levels at ground idle operating conditions, in addition to very low nitric oxide emission levels at high power operating conditions. Their significant results are reported.

An experimental investigation of two large annular diffusers with swirling and distorted inflow

Two annular diffusers downstream of a nacelle-mounted fan were tested for aerodynamic performance, measured in terms of two static pressure recovery parameters (one near the diffuser exit plane and one about three diameters downstream in the settling duct) in the presence of several inflow conditions. The two diffusers each had an inlet diameter of 1.84 m, an area ratio of 2.3, and an equivalent cone angle of 11.5, but were distinguished by centerbodies of different lengths. The dependence of diffuser performance on various combinations of swirling, radially distorted, and/or azimuthally distorted inflow was examined. Swirling flow and distortions in the axial velocity profile in the annulus upstream of the diffuser inlet were caused by the intrinsic flow patterns downstream of a fan in a duct and by artificial intensification of the distortions. Azimuthal distortions or defects were generated by the addition of four artificial devices (screens and fences). Pressure recovery data indicated beneficial effects of both radial distortion (for a limited range of distortion levels) and inflow swirl. Small amounts of azimuthal distortion created by the artificial devices produced only small effects on diffuser performance. A large artificial distortion device was required to produce enough azimuthal flow distortion to significantly degrade the diffuser static pressure recovery.

Damping in tapered annular seals for an incompressible fluid

Damping in annular seals is calculated for an incompressible fluid. Results show that damping in tapered seals optimized for stiffness is considerably less than that in straight seals for the same minimum clearance. Damping in rotating seals can promote fractional frequency whirl. Neglecting fluid acceleration makes solution much easier, but leads to errors in calculated damping of up to 16 percent.

Hydraulic forces caused by annular pressure seals in centrifugal pumps

The hydraulic forces caused by annular pressure seals were investigated. The measured inlet and exit loss coefficients of the flow through the seals were much smaller than the conventional values. The results indicate that the damping coefficient and the inertia coefficient of the fluid film in the seal are not affected much by the rotational speed or the eccentricity of the rotor, though the stiffness coefficient seemed to be influenced by the eccentricity.

Performance of annular prediffuser-combuster systems

Results of an experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance of several annular prediffuser-combustor systems are presented. Three curved wall, dump prediffusers of different length, area ratio, and turning angle were tested with and without a simulated combustor located downstream of the prediffuser. Performance was significantly influenced by the presence of the combustor. Pressure recovery and flow losses were determined as a function of prediffuser inlet velocity profile, flow extraction at the prediffuser inlet, axial and radial location of the combustor front end, and distribution of the flow in the combustor. Axial location of the combustor was found to be the most significant parameter influencing system performance.

Design of the annular suspension and pointing system /ASPS/ through decoupling and pole placement

A decoupling and pole-placement technique has been developed for the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) of the Space Shuttle which uses bandwidths as performance criteria. The dynamics of the continuous-data ASPS allows the three degrees of freedom to be totally decoupled by state feedback through constant gains, so that the bandwidth of each degree of freedom can be independently specified without interaction. Although it is found that the digital ASPS cannot be completely decoupled, the bandwidth requirements are satisfied by pole placement and a trial-and-error method based on approximate decoupling.

Annular apertures with low and high obstruction

The distribution of image energy by the central obstruction of annular apertures is discussed with special emphasis on the effect of an aperture shape parameter which can be interpreted optically as the inverse obstruction ratio. This parameter generates group arrangements with the number of rings given by N2 = 1/a, where a is the central obstruction ratio.
