GRIS observations of positron annihilation radiation from the Galactic center

In the present Gamma-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (GRIS) observations, the 511 keV line has been spectrally resolved and the Galactic plane and center components have been independently measured. These data, in combination with those from other narrow-field observations in the 1980s, support the two-component model of the positron annihilation source. A strong hard-X-ray continuum was detected in the Galactic plane observation; this 'diffuse' continuum component solves the mystery as to why wide-field instruments have detected such high continuum emission from the Galactic center, in virtue of its source contributions.

An observation of annihilation radiation from the Galactic center region

Results are reported from observations of the 511 MeV annihilation gamma-ray line from the Galactic center, made on May 22, 1989 with a high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer on board a balloon launched from Alice Springs (Australia). The observations were made at about 4 gm/sq cm atmospheric depth for 6 hrs in a series of target and background pointings lasting 20 min each. The results obtained from multiparameter Gaussian fits to the data were as follows: 511 keV flux = 0.00089 + or - 0.00027 ph/sq cm per sec-rad, line width of about 1.1 keV, and less than 3.2 keV FWHM at 95 percent confidence.

Fatigue damage in superalloys determined using Doppler broadening positron annihilation

Axial fatigue specimens of three superalloys, Inconel 718, Incoloy 903 and Haynes 188, were machined from solution-heat-treated material and artificially aged. They were subjected to cyclic loading for a selected number of cycles after which the S parameter was determined using Doppler broadening positron annihilation. Initially, the S parameter decreased, followed by a large increase and a subsequent decline leading to fracture. This has been interpreted as the removal of residual vacancies, the introduction of new defects by cyclic loading, and, finally, a clustering of the defects as microcracks which grow to cause failure.

Observation of annihilation radiation from the Galactic center - The point and ridge components

The point-source and Galactic-ridge components of the 511-keV annihilation radiation from the Galactic center are evaluated with an all-sky map based on detection at 80 keV through 2 MeV. The point-source flux is shown to be significant at 95-percent confidence and to agree with those of other data, while the ridge component is consistent with measurements taken at 25-deg longitude.

Diffuse 0.511 MeV line emission and the distribution of positron annihilation in the galaxy

We model the distribution in the Galaxy of 0.511 MeV line emission and the implied positron annihilation using plausible distributions based on observations at other photon energies. We use 0.511 MeV line observations from the Galactic center and from directions away from the Galactic center to normalize the two-dimensional 0.511 MeV sky maps. We find that in order to understand all of the available data it is necessary to invoke the presence of a time-variable component of 0.511 MeV line emission in addition to an underlying diffuse component. The large 0.511 MeV fluxes observed with broad field of view detectors, such as the SMM gamma-ray spectrometer, can be reconciled with the small fluxes seen with narrow field-of-view instruments (GRIS and OSSE) from directions away from the Galactic center if the diffuse emission follows the distribution of Galactic novae for which the recently detected 0.511 MeV line emission from the Galactic center with OSSE is predominantly of diffuse origin. For future GRIS and HEXAGONE observations from the direction of the Galactic center we predict a minimum 0.511 MeV line flux of (6.0 +/- 0.9) x 10 exp -4 photons/sq cm/s.

Diffuse galactic annihilation radiation

The study reports observations of positron annihilation radiation from the inner region of the Galaxy which show that there are two components of the radiation: a steady, diffuse Galactic component and a variable component from discrete, presumably compact sources. The existence of the variable component is supported by the ensemble of all narrow FOV 511 keV line observations, including recent detections with OSSE. The fit of this ensemble to a time-independent source distribution can be excluded at the approximately 3-sigma level. The same ensemble, combined with the broad FOV SMM observations of Galactic 511 keV line emission, sets constraints on the Galactic distribution of the diffuse component.

SMM observations of gamma-ray transients. 3: A search for a broadened, redshifted positron annihilation line from the direction of the Galactic center

We have searched for 1980-1988 Solar Maximum Mission gamma-ray spectrometer data for transient emission on timescales from hours to approximately 12 days of broad gamma-ray lines at energies approximately 400 keV, which were reported by the High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO) 1 and SIGMA experiments from two sources lying toward the Galactic center. The lines have been interpreted as the product of the annihilation of positrons in pair plasmas surrounding the black hole candidate 1E 1740.7-2942 and the X-ray binary 1H 1822-371. Our results from a combined exposure of approximately 1.5 x 10(exp 7)s provide no convincing evidence for transient emission of this line on any timescale between approximately 9 hr and approximately 1 yr. Our 3 sigma upper limits on the line flux during approximately 12 day intervals are characteristically 4.8 x 10(exp -3) photon/sq cm/s, while for approximately 1 day intervals our 3 sigma upper limits are characteristically 4.9 x 10(exp -3) photon/sq cm/s. These results imply a duty cycle of less than 1.3% for the transient line measured from 1H 1822-371 during a approximately 3 week interval in 1977 by HEAO 1, and a duty cycle of less than or = 0.8% for the transient line detected in 1990 and 1992 from 1E 1740.7-2942 on approximately 1 day timescales by SIGMA.

Search for Compton-backscattered annihilation radiation from the galactic center with the OSSE

An emission feature near 170 keV, interpreted as Compton-backscattered 511 keV positron-annihilation radiation, has been reported twice by balloon-borne germanium spectrometers from within approximately 15 deg of the Galactic center (Leventhal, MacCallum, & Stang 1978; Smith et al. 1993). Upper limits on this feature set by HEAO 3 (Mahoney, Ling, & Wheaton 1993) and other instruments indicate that it must be transient. We have searched data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) for this feature, using daily spectral accumulations from all pointings near the Galactic center up to 1993 August, and covering most of the region viewed by the balloon instruments. We find no evidence for backscatter emission. Under the hypothesis that the source is 1E 1740.7-2942, the OSSE data set (186 days) disagrees with the balloon measurements with 99.3% confidence. The average daily 3 sigma OSSE upper limit on bakscatter flux from 1E 1740.7-2942 is 6.8 x 10(exp -4) photons/sq cm/s, compared to the 1.3 x 10(exp -3) photons/sq cm reported by the balloon observations. We also saw no evidence in 186 days for linelike emission from the point source EXS 1737.9-2952 recently discovered by Grindlay, Covault, & Manandhar (1993). This source exhibited bright emission from 83-111 keV, which has been interpreted as doubly backscattered 511 keV radiation. The average daily 3 sigma upper limit from OSSE for this line is 9.8 x 10(exp -4) photons/sq cm/s, or approximately 8% of the reported flux.

Zero-Annihilation Periodic Control For Damping Vibrations

Report presents study on use of recently developed zero-annihilation periodic (ZAP) controller for active suppression of vibrations in flexible structures characterized by non-minimum-phase transfer functions. Non-minimum-phase situation occurs if certain kinds of vibration-sensor/vibration-actuator pairs (e.g., piezoelectric) used, and/or if vibration sensor(s) not colocated with vibration actuator(s).

Morphology of Thermoset Polyimides by Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy

Thermoset polyimides have great potential for successfully meeting tough stress and temperature challenges in the advanced aircraft development program. However, studies of structure/property relationships in these materials have not been very successful so far. Positron annihilation spectroscopy has been used to investigate free volumes and associated parameters. It has been noted that the free volume correlates well with the molecular weight, cross-link density and thermal coefficient of expansion of these materials. Currently no other techniques are available for direct measurement of these parameters. Experimental results and their interpretations will be discussed.

Coral Reef Annihilation, Persistence and Recovery at Earth’s Youngest Volcanic Island

The structure and function of coral reef ecosystems is increasingly compromised by multiple stressors, even in the most remote locations. Severe, acute disturbances such as volcanic eruptions represent extreme events that can annihilate entire reef ecosystems, but also provide unique opportunities to examine ecosystem resilience and recovery. Here, we examine the destruction, persistence and initial recovery of reefs associated with the hydromagmatic eruption that created Earth’s newest landmass, the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai volcanic island. Despite extreme conditions associated with the eruption, impacts on nearby reefs were spatially variable. Importantly, even heavily affected reefs showed signs of rapid recovery driven by high recruitment, likely from local refuges. The remote location and corresponding lack of additional stressors likely contribute to the resilience of Hunga’s reefs, suggesting that in the absence of chronic anthropogenic stressors, coral reefs can be resilient to one of the largest physical disturbances on Earth.

Probing the Properties of Superheavy Dark Matter Annihilating or Decaying into Neutrinos With Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Experiments

The evidence for dark matter particles,x, is compelling based on Galactic to cosmological scale observations. Thus far, the promising weakly interacting massive particle scenario have eluded detection, motivating alternative models of dark matter. We consider scenarios involving super-heavy dark matter (SHDM) that potentially can decay or annihilate to neutrinos and antineutrinos. In the mass range m(sub x) =10(exp 7) −10(exp 15) GeV, we evaluate the sensitivities of future observatories PO-EMMA and GRAND for indirect dark matter detection via the measurement of neutrino-induced extensive air showers (EAS), compute the Auger and ANITA limits using their last up-to-date sensitivities, and compare them with IceCube limits. We also show that the uncertainties related to the dark matter distribution in the Galactic halo have a large impact on the neutrino flux. We show that a ground-based radio detector such as GRAND can achieve high sensitivities due to its large effective area and high duty cycle. Space-based Cherenkov detectors such as POEMMA that measure the EAS optical Cherenkov signal have the advantage of full-sky coverage and rapid slewing, enabling an optimized SHDM observation strategy focusing on the Galactic Center. We show that increasing the field of view of the Cherenkov detectors can significantly enhance the sensitivity. Moreover, POEMMA’s fluorescence observation mode that measures EAS above20EeV will achieve state-of-the-art sensitivity to SHDM properties at the highest mass scales.

Dynamic Scaling Analysis of Accelerated Irradiation Testing on Additive Manufacturing Materials by Positron Annihilation

The timely applications of Additive Manufacturing (AM) materials in nuclear environments require accelerated irradiation tests, mainly ion irradiation to enable rapid prototyping. Low dose ion irradiation would cause sub-nanostructure changes by generation of lattice defects, vacancies, vacancy clusters and voids and void swelling caused by cellular dislocations. Positron Annihilation Lifetime (PAL), a novel technology, sensitive towards sub-nanostructure morphology with high accuracy (about 10-7 vacancy per atom), supported by Transition Electron Microscope (TEM) would be applied to identify the type and total size of the defects. The subsequent PAL measurements and TEM surface studies would be followed by PAL analysis that includes sophisticated trapping model. The PAS results would become an input to dynamic scaling analysis (that predicts radiation effects from low dose studies for high dose effects), which incorporate mean-field theory model. The final effect is an in-depth understanding of the microstructure evolution of AM materials under ion irradiation which can be extrapolated to the studies of neutron irradiation, since ion-irradiation takes less time and do not cause the irradiation hazard. The working hypothesis is that PAL technology, that have excellent sensitivity to low-defect concentration would help to identify ion-induced material damage on the atomic and nano-scale level, which then could be extrapolated to understand the neutron damage better.

Resummed predictions for jet-resolution scales in multijet production in e$^{+}$e$^{−}$ annihilation

We present for the first time resummed predictions at NLO + NLL′ accuracy for the Durham jet-resolution scales y$_{n,n+1}$ in multijet production in e$^{+}$e$^{−}$ collisions. Results are obtained using an implementation of the well known Caesar formalism within the Sherpa framework. For the 4-, 5- and 6-jet resolutions we discuss in particular the impact of subleading colour contributions and compare to matrix-element plus parton-shower predictions from Sherpa and Vincia.
