LANL Regular Employee Population and Demographics, FY15-21

This document summarizes an effort to compile and analyze the LANL regular employee population’s demographic attributes and trends between FY15-FY21 using MicroStrategy, a web-based data analytics and visualization tool. LANL’s HR Division collected and prepared data for the Weapons Program’s annual reporting activities for the 2017 through 2023 NNSA Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan (SSMP). Los Alamos workforce data represent the fiscal year-end snapshot of the permanent employee population who are categorized by the Common Occupational Classification System (COCS). This work enables further analyses, including trends for all workforce attributes presented in the SSMPs as well as a definition of a crosswalk between COCS categorization and the internal laboratory job classification hierarchy. Data for other sites and the federal workforce, as shown in the SSMPs, are included and corresponding figures can be visualized within the MicroStrategy tool. A portable, Excel-based version of the tool was developed and shared with the multi-site workforce working group. This summary highlights selected aspects of the LANL regular workforce. The data analyses and visualizations communicate insights within three major themes regarding permanent LANL employees: 1) demographic transformation, 2) attrition, and 3) skills. Regarding demographic transformation, and consistent with the general trend across the enterprise, early career regular employees are the fastest growing group, with growth ranging between 12-34% year-to-year over the seven-year period analyzed. The data also reflect effects of internal and external factors on attrition; the large spike in separations in FY18 aligns with the contract transition from LANS to Triad and the dip in attrition between FY20-FY21 is likely a result of the global pandemic. The population of regular employees in general management, engineer, and operator COCS categories have the fastest growth rates amongst all the occupational categories. The MicroStrategy and Excel tools provide additional details and trends.

Web-based Preprocessing and Visualization of 3D FIB Tomography Data for Nuclear Fuel Characterization

Three-dimensional (3D) focused ion beam (FIB) tomography enables reconstruction of internal nuclear fuel features that can't be fully evaluated through surface imaging alone. This capability supports characterization of fuel constituents and defects under thermal and irradiation conditions relevant to microreactor development. However, large tomography datasets can create data-handling, loading, and visualization challenges, especially when image-stack preparation and file conversion must be completed with separate tools. The Computational Ultraspatial Tomography Toolkit for High-Resolution Object Analysis Tools (CUTTRHOAT) is an open-source web application being developed to display FIB tomography datasets available through the Nuclear Research Data System (NRDS). The current alpha version requires prepared HDF5 datasets and has limited integrated data-preparation capabilities. This project improves CUTTHROAT by adding dataset-folder selection, automatic input detection, dataset scanning, missing-slice identification, blank-slice insertion, and image-stack-to-HDF5 conversion. Two applications will be compared: the baseline CUTTHROAT alpha workflow and the updated application containing the integrated data-handling and preprocessing functions. Evaluation will consider dataset detection accuracy, conversion success, loading time, rendering responsiveness, application stability, and user interaction. Preliminary results demonstrate successful loading of existing HDF5 files and converted image stacks, while testing also identified performance reductions caused by excessive blank-slice generation. The updated workflow reduces reliance on external preparation tools and supports more direct movement from image stacks to color-code 3D visualization. Future work includes refining missing-slice handling, integrating additional preprocessing functions, like a denoising feature, parsing TIFF metadata for automatic voxel scaling, and adding manual X, Y, and Z voxel-spacing inputs for PNG and JPEG.

Opportunities for an Integrated Web-Based Workbench for Data Access and Analysis - 20244

Management of environmental issues can require integration of multiple types of data and information, conducting data analysis and interpretation, and providing data visualization for effective communications. These data elements are important for site management to support regulator interactions and provide defensibility for remedial decisions. Databases and information repositories are core elements of managing data; however, efficient data access and analysis also enable effective site management. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site is an example of a complex site with a voluminous quantity of environmental data and a need for efficient site management. Different tiers of data and information tools have been developed and deployed to address site needs. These tools are configured for ready access via the web site interfaces and meet the rigorous quality requirements for environmental site management. Evolving efforts are focused on an integrated platform to meet site environmental management needs. In this platform, users can access site information at multiple levels of detail based on their need and permissions, so that data and associated analyses are presented within the context of the site mission and the user's management or technical needs. This concept is not only applicable at individual sites like Hanford but also applicable at other sites within the DOE complex. An integrated web-based architecture that links data visualization, data analytics, and management tools can provide holistic access to large data sets, minimize complexity, and maximize interactivity and technical communication. ElasTool v3.0: Efficient computational and visualization toolkit for elastic and mechanical properties of materials

Efficient computation and visualization of elastic and mechanical properties are crucial in the selection of materials and the design of new materials. Here, the ElasTool v3.0 toolkit marks a significant advancement in the computational analysis and visualization of elastic and mechanical properties of materials, essential in material selection and design. This enhanced version extends beyond standard calculations like elastic tensor, Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and Poisson's ratio. It introduces capabilities for computing minimum thermal conductivity, linear compressibility, rendering the Christoffel equation, and elastic energy density. Notably, it integrates advanced visualization tools, including compatibility with Plotly and Elate web platforms for interactive web-based property exploration. A key feature of ElasTool v3.0 is the implementation of second-order elastic constants (SOECs) for tubular 2D-based nanostructures and nanotubes. Leveraging high-efficiency strain-matrix sets (OHESS), the toolkit now facilitates efficient computation of elastic constants and mechanical properties at both zero and finite temperatures for 1D, 2D, and 3D dimensions. ElasTool is openly accessible on GitHub: https://github.com/gmp007/elastool.

Port Technical Assistance Program: A Proposed Initiative to Support U.S. Ports Through Energy Innovation

This document highlights the crucial importance of the maritime sector within the United States (U.S.) economy, serving as a key node for trade and global goods transportation. U.S. ports are currently grappling with challenges posed by rising shipping demands, the health impacts of diesel fuel reliance, and the technology adoptions of global trade partners due to increasing environmental regulations. This document proposes forming a technical assistance program, led by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), to help U.S. ports transition to sustainable energy solutions that not only improve environmental and community outcomes, but also enhance resilience to unexpected weather events and reduce pressure on local utilities. Coordinated by PNNL, this initiative would offer a web-based platform of consolidated resources and tools for comprehensive strategic planning and cost-benefit analysis. It also seeks to establish a collaborative network between ports and national laboratories to facilitate the sharing of best practices. The document suggests that optimizing resource allocation and providing tailored support could be achieved through strategic categorization of ports within this network, with relevant attributes and examples detailed in the report. The anticipated benefits of such a program could include increased efficiency and cost savings in port operations and the advancement of scientific innovation via alternative energy research. Also, it could enhance economic growth and competitiveness in international trade by enabling ports to meet shipping demands and develop resilient critical infrastructure through informed, long-term strategies.

SOSAT: Geohazard Risk Assessment in Carbon Sequestration Operations

Like all operations in which fluids are injected into the subsurface, geologic carbon storage (GCS) presents inherit risks that must be assessed and mitigated to successfully deploy such technology in the field. For example, alterations to pore pressure and the stress state due to fluid injection may trigger certain geohazards, such as potential fault activation and induced seismicity or unintentional hydraulic fracturing. Here we present capabilities for assessing these potential risks using the State of Stress Analysis Tool (SOSAT): a Python library and web-based application capable of probabilistically estimating the subsurface state of stress informed by various field observations. Using posterior distributions of principal stress components, SOSAT can assess the risk of fault activation within the injection formation for either a critically oriented fault or a fault with a user-prescribed orientation. Additionally, SOSAT can estimate the probability of unintentional hydraulic fracturing of the intact reservoir rock. Here, we demonstrate these SOSAT capabilities using a hypothetical GCS site. This type of risk assessment can assist with the effective deployment of GCS technology in the field by informing safe design and management practices.
