Measuring vehicle locations relative to a driver's vehicle is a critical component in the analysis of driving data from both postanalysis (such as in naturalistic driving studies) or in autonomous vehicle navigation. In this work we describe a method to estimate vehicle positions from a forward-looking video camera using intrinsic camera calibration, estimates of extrinsic parameters, and a convolutional neural network trained to detect and locate vehicles in video data. We compare the measurements we achieve with this method with ground truth and with radar data available from a naturalistic driving study. We identify regions where video is preferred, where radar is preferred, and explore trade-offs between the two methods in regions where the preference is more ambiguous. We describe applications of these measurements for transportation analysis.
Efficient processing of information is crucial for the optimization of neural resources in both biological and artificial visual systems. In this paper, we study the efficiency that may be obtained via the use of a fovea. Using biologically-motivated agents, we study visual information processing, learning, and decision making in a controlled artificial environment, namely the Atari Pong video game. We compare the resources necessary to play Pong between agents with and without a fovea. Our study shows that a fovea can significantly reduce the neural resources, in the form of number of neurons, number of synapses, and number of computations, while at the same time maintaining performance at playing Pong. To our knowledge, this is the first study in which an agent must simultaneously optimize its visual system, along with its decision making and action generation capabilities. That is, the visual system is integral to a complete agent.

With growing populations and pressing environmental problems, future economies will be increasingly plant-based. Now is the time to reimagine plant science as a critical component of fundamental science, agriculture, environmental stewardship, energy, technology and healthcare. This effort requires a conceptual and technological framework to identify and map all cell types, and to comprehensively annotate the localization and organization of molecules at cellular and tissue levels. This framework, called the Plant Cell Atlas (PCA), will be critical for understanding and engineering plant development, physiology and environmental responses. A workshop was convened to discuss the purpose and utility of such an initiative, resulting in a roadmap that acknowledges the current knowledge gaps and technical challenges, and underscores how the PCA initiative can help to overcome them.

Adaptive relaying utilizes the continuously changing status of the power system as the basis for online adjustment of the power system relay settings. Fundamentally they are protection schemes that adjust settings and/or logic of operations based on the prevailing conditions of the system. These adjustments can include, but are not limited to, the logging of data for post-mortem analysis, communication throughout the system, as well as changing relay parameters. Adaptive relaying considers the fact that the status of a power system can change. These include system configuration changes, load effect, cold load pickup, end-of-line protection, transformer protection, and automatic reclosing. In this research, the author focus on the need for a secure, selective, and reliable system for adaptive overcurrent protection in T&D and Distributed Energy Systems. Various types of adaptive methods are presented and explained along with some pros and cons of each.

One aspect of the present disclosure is an imaging system including an optical sensor defining an optical axis. The system further includes a light source. The system may include an optical beam splitter, and may also include an optional diffusing lens that may be configured to diffuse and/or collimate light from the light source and direct light exiting the diffusing lens to the optical beam splitter. The optical beam splitter is configured to direct light from the light source along the optical axis of the optical sensor.
