Search for direct pair production of supersymmetric partners of τ leptons in the final state with two hadronically decaying τ leptons and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for the direct production of a pair of $τ$ sleptons, the supersymmetric partners of $τ$ leptons, is presented. Each $τ$ slepton is assumed to decay to a $τ$ lepton and the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), which is assumed to be stable and to not interact in the detector, leading to an imbalance in the total reconstructed transverse momentum. The search is carried out in events identified as containing two $τ$ leptons, each decaying to one or more hadrons and a neutrino, and significant transverse momentum imbalance. In addition to scenarios in which the $τ$ sleptons decay promptly, the search also addresses scenarios in which the $τ$ sleptons have sufficiently long lifetimes to give rise to nonprompt $τ$ leptons. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector in 2016–2018, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . No significant excess is seen with respect to standard model expectations. Upper limits on cross sections for the pair production of $τ$ sleptons are obtained in the framework of simplified models. In a scenario in which the $τ$ sleptons are superpartners of left-handed $τ$ leptons, and each undergoes a prompt decay to a $τ$ lepton and a nearly massless LSP, $τ$ slepton masses between 115 and 340 GeV are excluded. In a scenario in which the lifetime of the $τ$ sleptons corresponds to c$τ$ 0 = 0.1 mm, where $τ_{0}$ represents the mean proper lifetime of the $τ$ slepton, masses between 150 and 220 GeV are excluded.

Pseudorapidity densities of charged particles with transverse momentum thresholds in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ and 13 TeV

The pseudorapidity density of charged particles with minimum transverse momentum (p T ) thresholds of 0.15, 0.5, 1, and 2 GeV/c is measured in pp collisions at the center of mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. The study is carried out for inelastic collisions with at least one primary charged particle having a pseudorapidity (η) within ± 0.8 and p T larger than the corresponding threshold. In addition, measurements without p T - thresholds are performed for inelastic and nonsingle-diffractive events as well as for inelastic events with at least one charged particle having |η| < 1 in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV for the first time at the LHC. These measurements are compared to the pythia 6, pythia 8, and epos-lhc models. In general, the models describe the η dependence of particle production well. However, discrepancies are observed for the highest transverse momentum threshold (p T > 2 GeV/c), highlighting the importance of such measurements for tuning event generators. The new measurements agree within uncertainties with results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments obtained at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV .

Transverse Λ polarization in 𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − annihilations and in SIDIS processes at the EIC within TMD factorization

We present a phenomenological study on the role of charm contribution and SU(2) isospin symmetry in the extraction of the Λ polarizing fragmentation functions from e + e – → Λ ↑ ($\overline{Λ}$ ↑ )h+X annihilation processes. We adopt the well-established transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism, within the Collins-Soper-Sterman evolution scheme at next-to-leading logarithm accuracy, carefully exploiting the role of the nonperturbative component of the polarizing fragmentation function. We then discuss the impact of these results on the predictions for transverse Λ, $\overline{Λ}$ polarization in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at typical energies of the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Transverse momentum moments

We establish robust relations between Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions (TMDs) and collinear distributions. We define weighted integrals of TMDs that we call Transverse Momentum Moments (TMMs) and prove that TMMs are equal to collinear distributions evaluated in some minimal subtraction scheme. The conversion to the modified minimal subtraction ( MS ¯ ) scheme can be done by a calculable factor, which we derive up to three loops for some cases. We discuss in detail the zeroth, the first, and the second TMMs and provide phenomenological results for them based on the current extractions of TMDs. The results of this paper open new avenues for theoretical and phenomenological investigation of the three-dimensional and collinear hadron structures. Transverse spin asymmetries and the electron Yukawa coupling at an FCC-ee

We show that measurements of single transverse-spin asymmetries at an 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collider can enhance the sensitivity to the electron Yukawa coupling, possibly enabling observation of the Standard Model value for this quantity. We demonstrate that the significance in both the 𝑏⁢$\overline{𝑏}$ and semileptonic 𝑊⁢𝑊 final states can be enhanced by factors of up to 3 compared to inclusive cross-section determinations of this coupling for transversely polarized electrons. If the positrons can be simultaneously longitudinally polarized, even at the level of 30%, the significance can be enhanced by a factor of 5 or more. The method utilizes quantum interference between the Higgs signal and the continuum background and is also applicable in other 𝑊⁢𝑊 and 𝑍⁢𝑍 final states.

First Observation of Multiple Transverse Wobbling Bands of Different Kinds in 183 Au

Here, we report the first observation of two wobbling bands in 183 Au, both of which were interpreted as the transverse wobbling (TW) band but with different behavior of their wobbling energies as a function of spin. It increases (decreases) with spin for the positive (negative) parity configuration. The crucial evidence for the wobbling nature of the bands, dominance of the $\textit{E}$2 component in the Δ$\textit{I}$ = 1 transitions between the partner bands, is provided by the simultaneous measurements of directional correlation from the oriented states ratio and the linear polarization of the $\textit{γ}$ rays. Particle rotor model calculations with triaxial deformation reproduce the experimental data well. A value of spin, $I_m$, has been determined for the observed TW bands below which the wobbling energy increases and above which it decreases with spin. The nucleus 183 Au is, so far, the only nucleus in which both the increasing and the decreasing parts are observed and thus gives the experimental evidence of the complete transverse wobbling phenomenon.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Soft Function through Large-Momentum Effective Theory

The transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) soft function is a key ingredient in QCD factorization of Drell-Yan and other processes with relatively small transverse momentum. We present a lattice QCD study of this function at moderately large rapidity on a 2 + 1 flavor CLS dynamic ensemble with a = 0.098 fm. We extract the rapidity-independent (or intrinsic) part of the soft function through a large-momentumtransfer pseudoscalar meson form factor and its quasi-TMD wave function using leading-order factorization in large-momentum effective theory. We also investigate the rapidity-dependent part of the soft function—the Collins-Soper evolution kernel—based on the large-momentum evolution of the quasi-TMD wave function.

Experimental Demonstration of a Large Transverse Emittance Ratio 11 : 1 in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), to be constructed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, will collide polarized high-energy electron beams with hadron beams, achieving luminosities of up to 1.0 × 10 34 cm –2 s –1 in the center-of-mass energy range of 20–140 GeV. In order to achieve such high luminosity, the EIC will employ small and flat beams at the interaction point. In the hadron storage ring of the EIC, the ratio of horizontal to vertical emittances is approximately 11:1. In contrast, in previous or existing hadron colliders, the horizontal and vertical emittances are typically similar or closely matched. At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we experimentally demonstrated a large transverse emittance ratio of 11:1 with gold ion beams at a particle energy of 100 GeV per nucleon, thanks to stochastic cooling and fine decoupling. Furthermore, we demonstrated collisions with flat beams, featuring a transverse beam size ratio of 3:1 for the first time at the RHIC.

Dynamics and phases of nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model

Inspired by current research on measurement-induced quantum phase transitions, we analyze the nonunitary Floquet transverse-field Ising model with complex nearest-neighbor couplings and complex transverse fields. Unlike its unitary counterpart, the model shows a number of steady phases, stable to integrability-breaking perturbations. Some phases have robust edge modes and/or spatiotemporal long-range orders in the bulk. The transitions between the phases have extensive entanglement entropy, whose scaling with the system size depends on the number of the real quasiparticle modes in the spectrum at the transition. In particular, the volume-law scaling appears on some critical lines, protected by pseudo-Hermiticity. Both the scaling of entanglement entropy in steady states and the evolution after a quench are compatible with the non-Hermitian generalization of the quasiparticle picture of Calabrese and Cardy at least qualitatively. Identification of High-Frequency Transverse Acoustic Modes in Multi-Nozzle Can Combustors

Abstract High frequency thermoacoustic instabilities are problematic for lean-premixed gas turbines. Identifying which acoustic mode is being excited is important, in that it provides insight into potential mitigation measures and mechanical stress/life. However, the frequency spacing between modes becomes quite close for high frequency instabilities in a can combustor. This makes it difficult to distinguish between the modes (e.g., the first transverse mode vs. a higher order axial/mixed mode) based upon frequency calculations alone, which inevitably have uncertainties in boundary conditions, temperature profiles, and combustion response. This paper presents a methodology to simultaneously identify the acoustic mode shapes in the axial and azimuthal directions from acoustic pressure measurements. Multiple high temperature pressure transducers, located at distinct axial and azimuthal positions, are flush mounted in the combustor wall. The measured pressure oscillations from each sensor are then used to reconstruct the pressure distributions by using a least squares method in conjunction with a solution of a three dimensional wave equation. In order to validate the methodology, finite element method (FEM) calculations with estimated post-flame temperature is used to provide the candidate frequencies and corresponding mode shapes. The results demonstrate the reconstructed mode shapes and standing/spinning character of transverse waves, as well as the associated frequencies, both of which are consistent with the FEM predictions. Nodal line location was also extracted from the experimental data during the instabilities in the pressure data.

Angular correlations in pA collisions from CGC: multiplicity and mean transverse momentum dependence of $$v_2$$

Abstract Within the dense-dilute Color Glass Condensate approach, and using the Golec–Biernat–Wuesthoff model for the dipole scattering amplitude, we calculate $$v_2^2$$ v 2 2 as well as the correlations between $$v_2^2$$ v 2 2 and both the total multiplicity and the mean transverse momentum of produced particles. We find that the correlations are generally very small consistent with the observations. We note an interesting sharp change in the value of $$v^2_2$$ v 2 2 as well as of its correlations as a function of the width of the transverse momentum bin. This crossover is associated with the change from Bose enhancement dominance of the correlation for narrow bin to HBT dominated correlations for larger bin width.

A precise measurement of the Z -boson double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity distributions in the full phase space of the decay leptons with the ATLAS experiment at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

This paper presents for the first time a precise measurement of the production properties of the Z boson in the full phase space of the decay leptons. This is in contrast to the many previous precise unfolded measurements per formed in the fiducial phase space of the decay leptons. The measurement is obtained from proton–proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb -1 . The results, based on a total of 15.3 million Z boson decays to electron and muon pairs, extend and improve a previous measurement of the full set of angular coefficients describing Z-boson decay. The double-differential cross section distributions in Z-boson transverse momentum pT and rapidity y are measured in the pole region, defined as 80 < m ℓℓ < 100 GeV, over the range |y| < 3.6. The total uncertainty of the normalised cross-section measurements in the peak region of the pT distribution is dominated by statistical uncertainties over the full range and increases as a function of rapidity from 0.5–1.0% for |y| < 2.0 to 2 - 7% at higher rapidities. The results for the rapidity-dependent transverse momentum distributions are compared to state of-the-art QCD predictions, which combine in the best cases approximate N 4 LL resummation with N 3 LO fixed-order per turbative calculations. The differential rapidity distributions integrated over pT are even more precise, with accuracies from 0.2–0.3% for |y| < 2.0 to 0.4–0.9% at higher rapidities, and are compared to fixed-order QCD predictions using the most recent parton distribution functions. The agreement between data and predictions is quite good in most cases.

Measurements of differential two-particle number and transverse momentum correlation functions in pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textit{s}}$ = 13 TeV

Differential two-particle normalized cumulants (R 2 ) and transverse momentum correlations (P 2 ) are measured as a function of the relative pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle difference (Δη, Δφ) of charged particle pairs in minimum bias pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurements use charged hadrons in the pseudorapidity region of |η| < 0.8 and the transverse momentum range 0.2 < p T < 2.0 in order to focus on soft multiparticle interactions and to complement prior measurements of these correlation functions in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions. The correlation functions are reported for both unlike-sign and like-sign pairs and their charge-independent and charge-dependent combinations. Both the R 2 and P 2 measured in pp collisions exhibit features qualitatively similar to those observed in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions. The Δη and Δφ root mean square widths of the near-side peak of the correlation functions are evaluated and compared with those observed in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions and show smooth evolution with the multiplicity of charged particles produced in the collision. The comparison of the measured correlation functions with predictions from PYTHIA8 shows that this model qualitatively captures their basic structure and characteristics but feature important differences. In addition, the R$^{CD}_{2}$ is used to determine the charge balance function of hadrons produced within the detector acceptance of the measurements. The integral of the balance function is found to be compatible with those reported by a previous measurement in Pb–Pb collisions.

Angular dependence of the transverse Raman scattering in KDP and DKDP in geometries suitable for beam polarization control

The angular dependance of the transverse Raman scattering in potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) and its deuterated analogue (DKDP) for the entire range of crystal configurations suitable for laser beam polarization control has been investigated via experimental and modeling tools. This work was made possible by simultaneously rotating a spherical sample and the pump polarization to effectively measure the angular dependance of the transverse Raman signal in 360°. This novel method, which is applicable for the investigation of the Raman scattering in optically anisotropic materials, demonstrates that the spontaneous Raman scattering signal exhibits strong angular dependence that is modulated by depolarization and polarization rotation effects generated as the Raman signal traverses the material due to its birefringence. The results show that the total signal generated by the pump beam is the sum of the signals generated by the two components that have polarization parallel and orthogonal to the optic axis. The peak signal intensity, which is of importance for high-power laser applications, depends on the orientation of the optic axis and can vary by a factor of about 2. The excellent agreement between experimental data and modeling results validates the associated models and enables one to consider optimal crystal cut designs for specific applications.

Back-Azimuth Estimation of Air-to-Ground Coupled Infrasound from Transverse Coherence Minimization

We present the transverse coherence minimization method (TCM)—an approach to estimate the back–azimuth of infrasound signals that are recorded on an infrasound microphone and a colocated three–component seismometer. Accurate back–azimuth information is important for a variety of monitoring efforts, but it is currently only available for infrasound arrays and for seismoacoustic sensor pairs separated by 10 s of meters. Our TCM method allows for the analysis of colocated sensor pairs, sensors located within a few meters of each other, which may extend the capabilities of existing seismoacoustic networks and supplement operating infrasound arrays. This approach minimizes the coherence of the transverse component of seismic displacement with the infrasound wave to estimate the infrasound back–azimuth. After developing an analytical model, we investigate seismoacoustic signals from the August 2012 Humming Roadrunner experiment and the 26 May 2021 eruption of Great Sitkin Volcano, Alaska, U.S.A., at the ranges of 6.5–185 km from the source. We discuss back–azimuth estimates and potential sources of deviation (1°–15°), such as local terrain effects or deviation from common analytical models. This practical method complements existing seismoacoustic tools and may be suitable for routine application to signals of interest.

Impact of Coherent Beam-Beam Interaction on the Collisionless Damping of the Transverse Coupled-Bunch Instability

In the EIC design, at high average-current operation, the transverse coupled-bunch instability (TCBI) induced by the long-range transverse resistive-wall wakefield in the electron storage ring (eSR) has a fast growth rate and requires efficient mitigation. A natural mitigation mechanism is provided by the beam-beam interaction at the interaction point (IP), which gives a strong Landau damping for the TCBI in the eSR. In this study, using a simplified simulation model, we investigate how this Landau damping from the beam-beam interaction behaves when the coherent beam-beam interaction at IP is considered. Our method and results will be presented in this paper.

Wire scanner assessment of transverse beam size in the Fermilab side-coupled linac

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac contains seven 805 MHz modules accelerating H- beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV. Each module contains at least one wire scanner, yielding beam intensity at positions along a transverse direction. These wire scanners each contain three wires, mounted at different angles: "X", "Y", and 45° between "X" and "Y" to analyze coupling. Recently, a significant amount of transverse X-Y coupling was identified within wire scanner data from the Side-Coupled Linac, which has been present in data from the past decade. This realization has prompted an investigation into the wire scanner's utility as a diagnostic tool in the Fermilab Linac. This work presents efforts to better characterize the wire scanners' limitations and the phenomenon occurring in the Side-Coupled Linac.

Asymptotics of transverse momentum broadening in dense QCD media

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the transverse momentum broadening distribution of an energetic quark or gluon propagating through dense QCD matter, in the large system size L L limit, taking into account radiative corrections in the double logarithmic approximation. Thanks to a connection between the evolution of the jet quenching parameter \hat{q} q ̂ and the formation of traveling wave fronts in nonlinear physics, we obtain a formula for the L L dependence of the characteristic transverse momentum scale Q_s Q s of the distribution valid up to terms of order 1/\ln(L) 1 / ln ( L ) . We briefly discuss the physical implications of this formula for jet quenching and small- x x phenomenology.
