An AI-Based 3D Bat Movement Tracking System at Wind Energy Facilities Using Multi-Thermal Video Cameras

The talk at the NAWEA Wind Tech 2024 conference discusses how to leverage the potential of real-time thermal-imaging methodologies in quantifying nocturnal bat activities at wind turbines, using 3D computer vision techniques within a deep learning framework. This innovation enables the automatic detection and classification of bats, birds, and insects in thermal-imaging videos captured at wind turbine sites, facilitating efficient and accurate data analysis for enhanced understanding and mitigation of bat-wind turbine interactions.

Simultaneous Two-Way Doppler and Ranging for Multiple Spacecraft at Mars: Flight Radio Tracking System Design and Performance Simulations

Mars exploration requires multiple orbiters and surface infrastructures on Mars. Location determination is essential to support various human and robotic activities on the Mars surface and in orbits. Robust communication coverage is required for data transmission between assets on Mars surface and orbiters in addition to the communication between orbiters and Earth. We proposed a notional Mars Regional Navigation Satellite System (MRNSS) that provides continuous or near-continuous in-situ navigation and timing services for the robotic and human missions in the vicinity of a Mars landing site. For such a system, the Earth’s deep space stations have to perform orbit determination (OD) for the Mars orbiters so that their locations are known to a reasonable degree of accuracy. This provides the surface and orbiting user vehicles the ability to estimate their locations using the orbiter-vehicle range measurements. Two important inputs for accurate OD are 2-way Doppler and ranging measurements derived from the transmitted and received radio signals. We also introduced a new flight-ground collaborative architecture that provides simultaneous Doppler and ranging measurements for multiple spacecraft in the Mars vicinity, using an example of the Mars landing site Utopia Planitia and four Mars orbiters, all communicating with Earth via twoway communications in the X-band frequency range. One key component of this architecture is that each spacecraft uses a smart frequency sweeping algorithm that acquires and tracks the uplink signals with high Doppler and Doppler rate residuals. In this paper, we simulate the Doppler and Doppler rate profiles of the Mars orbiters of the MRNSS and assessed the acquisition and tracking performances.

Improvements to PVWatts for Fixed and One-Axis Tracking Systems

This work presents improvements to the widely used NREL PVWatts photovoltaic system energy model to improve modeling accuracy for typical fixed and one axis system designs. The aim is to calculate losses in the PV system assuming typical modern system design practices, while maintaining simplicity by keeping the required set of input parameters small. These improvements allow users to more credibly and quickly evaluate competing system designs in early stage feasibility. Common submodels for module cover, spectral, snow, tracker, transformer, plant controller, and self-shading losses, in addition to a bifacial gain option, are incorporated into the PVWatts model, and are shown to improve PVWatts' system performance prediction capabilities without major impact to ease of use. We anticipate including these improvements in a future release of NREL's open source PVWatts code, and some of the features may become available in the System Advisor Model (SAM) desktop software as well as the popular PVWatts web application.

Waste Compliance and Tracking System (WCATS) User Guide (Release 2)

This manual has been written to provide a general reference of the usage of WCATS. Because WCATS is designed to be used at many different kinds of facilities, much of the usage of the application is driven by the metadata configuration of the system. General usage of the system and the different types of tasks provided is included in this document, but custom usage and an exhaustive list of configuration options will not be provided. This manual is not intended to be a replacement for detailed work procedures or desk instructions, and it will not include configuration details such as service unit names, waste stream numbers for selection, etc. Any use of such information in this document is only provided as an example.

The Mesa Arizona Pupil Tracking System

A computer-based Pupil Tracking/Teacher Monitoring System was designed for Mesa Public Schools, Mesa, Arizona. The established objectives of the system were to: (1) facilitate the economical collection and storage of student performance data necessary to objectively evaluate the relative effectiveness of teachers, instructional methods, materials, and applied concepts; and (2) identify, on a daily basis, those students requiring special attention in specific subject areas. The system encompasses computer hardware/software and integrated curricula progression/administration devices. It provides daily evaluation and monitoring of performance as students progress at class or individualized rates. In the process, it notifies the student and collects information necessary to validate or invalidate subject presentation devices, methods, materials, and measurement devices in terms of direct benefit to the students. The system utilizes a small-scale computer (e.g., IBM 1130) to assure low-cost replicability, and may be used for many subjects of instruction.

Lightning tracking system

A system is described for locating lightning strikes by developing the coordinates of a pair of lines, each of which is produced at a reference sensing station. At each station there are a pair of directional antennas which produce analog signals responsive to a lightning stroke. These analog signals are fed to a pair of integrators which integrate the signals for a predetermined period of time so as to produce the X and Y coordinate of a particular line. The analog signals are also fed through a square rooter, a Schmitt trigger circuit, and flip-flops to produce pulses for starting and stopping the integrators. The system at the remote station is similar to that at the central station and is tied to the circuitry at the central station through logic circuits to minimize the chance of error from spurious signals. Computers, printers, and plotters are utilized to plot the exact location of the lightning stroke.

Transient analysis of phase-locked tracking systems in the presence of noise.

This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining time-dependent solutions to a class of Fokker-Planck equations that arise in the analysis and synthesis of a variety of first-order synchronization systems employing the phase-lock principle. These include the classical sinusoidal phase-locked loop, squaring and Costas loops, data-aided loops, hybrid loops, various symbol synchronizer mechanizations, and tunnel-diode oscillators. By analyzing the spectral properties of the associated time-dependent Fokker-Planck boundary value problem, eigenfunction expansions of the reduced modulo-2-pi phase-error-transition probability-density function are developed for a class of first-order synchronization systems.
