Switchable planar chirality and spin texture in highly ordered ferroelectric hybrid perovskite domains

Chiral organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites offer a promising platform for developing non-linear chiro-optical applications and chiral-induced spin selectivity. Here, we show that achiral hybrid perovskites that have highly ordered ferroelectric domains with orthogonal polarization exhibit planar chirality, as manifested by second harmonic generation with strong circular dichroism. Interestingly, the handedness of the second harmonic generation circular dichroism response can be alternatingly switched between orthogonally polarized domains and domain walls. To correlate the origin of planar chirality in these domains, atom-resolved atomic force microscopy is used to reveal distinct arrangements of atomic rows in these ferroelectric crystals that indicate planar symmetry breaking. Remarkably, a large SHG anisotropy factor of 0.41 is measured at the domain wall. Additionally, spatially resolved two-photon photoluminescence excitation measurement provide evidence of larger Rashba spin-splitting in these chiral ferroelectric domains compared to domain-free areas. Our discoveries of domain-dependent planar chirality and spin texture hold great promise for advancement of domain-specific chiro-optical applications.

Correlated spin-wave generation and domain-wall oscillation in a topologically textured magnetic film

Spin waves, or magnons, are essential for next-generation energy-efficient spintronics and magnonics. Yet, visualizing spin-wave dynamics at nanoscale and microwave frequencies remains a formidable challenge due to the lack of spin-sensitive, time-resolved microscopy. Here, in this study, we report a breakthrough in imaging dipole-exchange spin waves in a ferromagnetic film owing to the development of laser-free ultrafast Lorentz electron microscopy, which is equipped with a microwave-mediated electron pulser for high spatiotemporal resolution. Using topological spin textures, we captured the emission, propagation, reflection and interference of spin waves from spin anti-vortices under radio-frequency excitations. Remarkably, we show that spin-wave generation is closely tied to the oscillatory motion of specific magnetic domain walls, providing the missing link between wave emission and wall dynamics near magnetic singularities. This work opens new possibilities in magnonics, offering a nanoscopic view of spin dynamics via transmission electron microscopy and enabling controlled excitation via radio-frequency fields for exploring non-equilibrium states in magnetic and multiferroic systems.

Dynamical Generation of Higher-Order Spin-Orbit Coupling, Topology, and Persistent Spin Texture in Light-Irradiated Altermagnets

Altermagnets have been identified as the third category of magnetic materials, exhibiting momentum-dependent spin splitting characterized by even powers of momentum. Here, in this Letter, we show that when subjected to elliptically polarized light, these materials serve as an exemplary framework for the dynamic generation of topological bands featuring higher-order spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Notably, while the generated Zeeman field remains invariant to the particular altermagnetic ordering, the induced higher-order SOCs are related to the magnitude and symmetry of the altermagnetic order. Specifically, we show that an altermagnet exhibiting 𝐤 2⁢𝑛 -spin splitting can generate odd-in-𝐤 spin-orbit couplings up to 𝐤 2⁢𝑛−1 . In the limit of circularly polarized light, the only correction is 𝑘 2⁢𝑛−1 , with all lower-order contributions being nullified. Interestingly, light-induced SOCs significantly impact the low-energy band topology, where their Chern numbers change by Δ⁢𝐶 = ±1, 2, 3 for 𝑑, 𝑔, 𝑖-wave altermagnets. Finally, we find a critical field in which a persistent spin texture is realized, a highly desirable state with predicted infinite spin lifetime. Our Letter showcases light as a powerful, controllable tool for engineering complex and exciting phenomena in altermagnets.

Understanding the effect of crystal anisotropy on grain growth, texturing and transport via the orthorhombic ?-U system [Slides]

The alpha phase of uranium exhibits the orthorhombic crystal structure, resulting in significant physical property anisotropy. These complex properties make the material challenging to work with in engineering settings but provide a rich arena to investigate the fundamental, multi-scale effects of anisotropy on physical behaviors such as grain growth and microstructure evolution under irradiation. We apply molecular dynamics and phase field modeling to study mass transport and grain growth in alpha-uranium. We characterize the mobilities of crystalline defects and the interfacial energy, and We find that the grain boundary energy is highly variable depending on the interface structure and that the relative rates of defect transport change with temperature. We also find that anisotropic thermal expansion has a significant impact on grain growth kinetics and texture development. Our results are used to explain experimental observations and to provide a basis for further hypotheses into the complex physical behavior of alpha-uranium.

Dynamics and Formation of Antiferromagnetic Textures in MnBi 2 Te 4 Single Crystal

We report coherent X-ray imaging of antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains and domain walls in MnBi 2 Te 4 , an intrinsic AFM topological insulator. This technique enables direct visualization of domain morphology without reconstruction algorithms, allowing us to resolve antiphase domain walls as distinct dark lines arising from the A-type AFM structure. The wall width is determined to be 550(30) nm, in good agreement with earlier magnetic force microscopy results. The temperature dependence of the AFM order parameter extracted from our images closely follows previous neutron scattering data. Remarkably, however, we find a pronounced hysteresis in the evolution of domains and domain walls: upon cooling, dynamic reorganizations occur within a narrow ∼1 K interval below 𝑇 𝑁 , whereas upon warming, the domain configuration remains largely unchanged until AFM order disappears. These findings reveal a complex energy landscape in MnBi 2 Te 4 , governed by the interplay of exchange, anisotropy, and domain-wall energies, and underscore the critical role of AFM domain-wall dynamics in shaping its physical properties. These sharply defined and hysteretically evolving walls may provide a controllable AFM texture in MnBi 2 Te 4 , hinting at potential use in low-power spintronic devices based on domain-wall dynamics.
