Operationally Efficient Propulsion System Study (OEPSS) data book. Volume 4: OEPSS design concepts

This study was initiated to identify operations problems and cost drivers for current propulsion systems and to identify technology and design approaches to increase the operational efficiency and reduce operations costs for future propulsion systems. To provide readily usable data for the Advanced Launch System (ALS) program, the results of the OEPSS study have been organized into a series of OEPSS Data Books. This volume describes three propulsion concepts that will simplify the propulsion system design and significantly reduce operational requirements. The concepts include: (1) a fully integrated, booster propulsion module concept for the ALS that avoids the complex system created by using autonomous engines with numerous artificial interfaces; (2) an LOX tank aft concept which avoids potentially dangerous geysering in long LOX propellant lines; and (3) an air augmented, rocket engine nozzle afterburning propulsion concept that will significantly reduce LOX propellant requirements, reduce vehicle size and simplify ground operations and ground support equipment and facilities.

CO2 laser ranging systems study

The conceptual design and error performance of a CO2 laser ranging system are analyzed. Ranging signal and subsystem processing alternatives are identified, and their comprehensive evaluation yields preferred candidate solutions which are analyzed to derive range and range rate error contributions. The performance results are presented in the form of extensive tables and figures which identify the ranging accuracy compromises as a function of the key system design parameters and subsystem performance indexes. The ranging errors obtained are noted to be within the high accuracy requirements of existing NASA/GSFC missions with a proper system design.

Improved Orbiter Waste Collection System Study, Appendix D

Basic requirements for a space shuttle orbiter waste collection system are established. They are intended to be an aid in the development and procurement of a representative flight test article. Orbiter interface requirements, performance requirements, flight crew operational requirements, flight environmental requirements, and ground operational and environmental requirements are considered.

Characteristics of future air cargo demand and impact on aircraft development - A report on the Cargo/Logistic Airlift Systems Study /CLASS/ project

The considered study has been conducted to evaluate the future potential for an advanced air cargo transport. A current operations analysis is discussed, taking into account the traffic structure, modal cost comparisons, terminal operations, containerization, and institutional factors. Attention is also given to case studies, a demand forecast, and an advanced air cargo systems analysis. The effects of potential improvements on reducing costs are shown. Improvement to the current infrastructure can occur from 1978 to 1985 with off-the-shelf technology, which when combined with higher load factors for aircraft and containers, can provide up to a 16 percent reduction in total operating costs and a 15 percent rate reduction. The results of the analysis indicate that the proposed changes in the infrastructure and improved cargo loading efficiencies are as important to improving the airlines' financial posture as is the anticipated large dedicated cargo aircraft.

Auxiliary payload power system study for space processing applications payloads. Preliminary requirements study

The preliminary designs, specifications, and programmatic data for the auxiliary payload power system (APPS) are presented. The APPS concept is an independent system to be carried in the Orbiter's cargo bay having the capability of housing and supporting space processing applications (SPA) experiment payloads and augmenting Spacelab power and heat rejection capabilities as required in the performance of these experiments.

Science and Applications Space Platform (SASP) End-to-End Data System Study

The capability of present technology and the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) to accommodate Science and Applications Space Platforms (SASP) payload user's requirements, maximum service to the user through optimization of the SASP Onboard Command and Data Management System, and the ability and availability of new technology to accommodate the evolution of SASP payloads were assessed. Key technology items identified to accommodate payloads on a SASP were onboard storage devices, multiplexers, and onboard data processors. The primary driver is the limited access to TDRSS for single access channels due to sharing with all the low Earth orbit spacecraft plus shuttle. Advantages of onboard data processing include long term storage of processed data until TRDSS is accessible, thus reducing the loss of data, eliminating large data processing tasks at the ground stations, and providing a more timely access to the data.

A 20/30 GHz personal access satellite system study

JPL is exploring the potential and feasibility of a personal access satellite system which will offer the user freedom and mobility. This paper defines the system concept and applications, presents a strawman design, and identifies the enabling technologies. The system as currently conceived could provide voice and data services to users in the Contiguous United States (CONUS) in the late 1990s to the early 2000s using the 20/30 GHz bands.

Mission modeling for the Manned Transportation System study

To determine the requirements and potential options for the next Manned Transportation System, a 'needs' analysis was performed. The analysis identified the number, mass, type, and destination of manned and unmanned payloads to space. The needs model is based on the NASA Mixed Fleet Manifest and a version of the FY90 Civil Needs Data Base with Space Station Restructure modifications and a 'strawman' DOD mission model.

A VTOL translational rate control system study on a six degrees-of-freedom motion simulator

A linearized translational rate system for near hover flight was optimized on a large motion simulator under the constraints of no disturbances and limited control power. Both lateral and longitudinal modes were considered with the primary variables of investigation being control sensitivity and response stiffness and secondarily system damping. Yaw and height control characteristics were represented by an angular rate and acceleration system, respectively. General regions of desired sensitivity and stiffness for the longitudinal and lateral modes were determined under VFR conditions for both the rapid maneuver task and the station keeping/mild maneuver task.

Acquisition/expulsion system for earth orbital propulsion system study. Volume 2: Cryogenic design

Detailed designs were made for three earth orbital propulsion systems; (1) the space shuttle (integrated) OMS/RCS, (2) the space shuttle (dedicated) OMS (LO2), and (3) the space tug. The preferred designs from the integrated OMS/RCS were used as the basis for the flight test article design. A plan was prepared that outlines the steps, cost, and schedule required to complete the development of the prototype DSL tank and feedline (LH2 and LO2) systems. Ground testing of a subscale model using LH2 verified the expulsion characteristics of the preferred DSL designs.
