Systematic Construction of Time-Dependent Hamiltonians for Microwave-Driven Josephson Circuits

Time-dependent electromagnetic drives are fundamental for controlling complex quantum systems, including superconducting Josephson circuits. In these devices, accurate time-dependent Hamiltonian models are imperative for predicting their dynamics and designing high-fidelity quantum operations. Existing numerical methods, such as black-box quantization (BBQ) and energy-participation ratio (EPR), excel at modeling the static Hamiltonians of Josephson circuits. However, these techniques do not fully capture the behavior of driven circuits stimulated by external microwave drives, nor do they include a generalized approach to account for the inevitable noise and dissipation that enter through microwave ports. Here, we introduce numerical techniques that leverage classical microwave simulations, efficiently executable in finite-element solvers, to obtain the time-dependent Hamiltonian of microwave-driven superconducting circuits with arbitrary geometries under charge, flux, or mixed electromagnetic modulation. Importantly, our techniques do not rely on a lumped-element description of the superconducting circuit, in contrast to previous approaches to tackling this problem. We demonstrate the versatility of our approach by characterizing the driven properties of realistic circuit devices in complex electromagnetic environments, including coherent dynamics due to charge and flux modulation, as well as drive-induced relaxation and dephasing. Our techniques offer a powerful toolbox for optimizing circuit designs and advancing practical applications in superconducting quantum computing.

Boron Coordination in Multicomponent Glasses: Analytical Models and Machine Learning With Uncertainty

Borosilicate glasses are extensively used in a variety of applications from kitchenware to nuclear waste immobilization due to the strong network formed by the Si-O-B bond that makes it resistant to chemical corrosion and gives it a low thermal expansion. Boron, however, exists in both trigonal BO3 and tetrahedral BO4 bonds in glass systems, which impacts the chemical durability and thermal resistance of the glass, amongst other properties. Boron coordination (N4), or the ratio of the amount of BO4 to BO3 within a glass, may aid in predicting these properties but is difficult to derive without experimental data due to the complexity of impacts from varied glass compositions and processing factors. For this reason, compositional models have been developed to predict boron coordination, but the models typically include a limited number of glass components. To help fill this gap in the models, in this work, a diverse multicomponent glass dataset of 809 glasses is compiled from a literature search, and then a number of analytical and machine learning (ML) models are trained on the dataset. Previously developed modified Bernstein and modified Du Stebbins analytical models were fitted to update parameters with the new dataset. Then, partially Bayesian neural networks, Gaussian process regressor, and heteroskedastic deterministic neural networks were evaluated. The ML models examined all have different strategies to overcome the potential for overfitting as a result of a limited training dataset, and return results that account for model uncertainty, which can be valuable for understanding model reliability. For the first time, cooling rate is introduced as an input parameter for ML models, showing consistent improvements in performance and solidifying the importance of including parameters outside of composition alone for N4 prediction. The machine learning models examined here show promise in accurate predictions of boron coordination in borosilicate glasses, all achieving R2 values of 0.91.

On-Chip Tuning of Superconductivity in Fullerides via Current-Driven Rb + Intercalation

An in-operando electro-intercalation method for the on-chip synthesis of alkali-metal-intercalated materials and their Raman spectroscopic and transport characterization in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) is developed. We apply this method to synthesize fulleride superconductors via Rb + intercalation into a C 60 film. During the intercalation, we monitor the stoichiometry via UHV-Raman spectroscopy and probe superconductivity via transport measurements. An increase of the superconducting transition temperature from 7.0 K to 14.5 K is observed when the stoichiometry is tuned from Rb 2.7 C 60 to Rb 3 C 60 . In our experiment, an ionic Rb+ flux into the host material is induced by an applied electronic current via a Butler–Volmer-type mechanism. Electro-intercalation captivates through improved stoichiometric precision, the ability to smoothly vary stoichiometry via duration of current application, and the absence of a lower limit of the volume of the host material. It represents a powerful concept for the on-chip synthesis of intercalated materials, battery research, and beyond.

Novel PtNi single-atom–nanocluster (SA–NC) ensembles promote Tafel kinetics and ampere-class AEM hydrogen evolution

The development of efficient, durable, and low-PGM electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is critical for next-generation electrolysis technologies. We report a facile two-step synthesis of highly dispersed PtNi and PtNi-nitride nanoclusters (NCs) (~2.3 nm) with ultralow Pt content (0.5 at.%) anchored on N-doped Vulcan carbon. Structural and compositional characterization via XAS, XPS, HAADF-STEM, HRTEM, and EDS mapping established key structure–activity relationships across varying Pt/Ni ratios and pyrolysis temperatures. The Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 catalyst, an ensemble of PtNi M-N-C type single-atom (SA) moieties with neighboring PtNi nanoclusters (NC), exhibited superior HER performance in alkaline media, achieving overpotentials of 30, 115, and 210 mV at 10, 100, and 500 mA cm−2, respectively. Despite at a lower Pt content, this novel SA–NC ensemble outperformed commercial Pt/C by ~36%. A standardized literature comparison with contemporary Pt- and Ru-doped analogues reveals the as-prepared Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 to sit at the apex of Tafel-limited kinetics and low overpotential at 100 mA cm−2. Tafel-limited Tafel slopes in both alkaline and acidic regimes confirm favorable proton recombination kinetics. Mass activities at 200 mV reached 13.8 and 18.84 A mgPt−1 in alkaline and acidic media, respectively. However, excessive nitridation (e.g., at 650 °C) adversely altered Pt electronic structure and HER kinetics. While Ni enhanced alkaline HER, acidic HER favored Ni-free analogues. Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 also demonstrated robust temperature responsiveness and 300-h operational stability at high current densities (0.5–1.0 A cm−2) in MEA tests. This work presents a scalable strategy for designing thermally responsive, durable, and compositionally tunable NC catalysts with neighboring SA moieties for alkaline electrolysis.

Healable Coatings as a Mechanism to Repair Leading Edge Erosion in Wind Energy

Wind turbine blades are highly engineered structures designed to face temperature extremes and high winds. However, erosion of the blade's leading edge and subsequent repair remains a significant and costly challenge for the wind energy industry. Repair of these leading edges can lead to large amounts of downtime for the turbine and significant operational inefficiencies. In this work, the strength of adhesion and healing ability of a commercially available vitrimer (Mallinda's VITRIMAX) was compared to that of a thermoplastic resin, which has previously been demonstrated in wind energy applications (Arkema's Elium) to evaluate their efficacy as surface coatings for wind turbine blades, particularly their leading edges. Vitrimers are a class of inherently reprocessable thermosets, and it was theorized that vitrimer-based leading edge coatings could enable more robust and efficient wind turbine blades with decreased operational downtime and safer maintenance practices. It was found that the VITRIMAX adhered better to the wind blades' surfaces than both the manufacturer's paint and Elium, with increases in pull-off strength of adhesion ranging from 24% to 83% above that of the original paint. Furthermore, the VITRIMAX adhered strongly to the underlying composite of each blade with strength of adhesion values increasing in ranges from 42% to 97% above that of the original paint. Finally, the vitrimer coating showed an 88% decrease in surface roughness compared to end-of-life blade materials, and initial healing demonstrations in which coatings were manually scratched and subsequently healed exhibited an ~84.5% decrease in scratch depths.

Complex-Concentrated Anion Doping Enables Ultra-Stable Lattice Oxygen and Structural Integrity in Lithium-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes

Lithium- and manganese-rich layered oxides (LMR) stand out as next-generation lithium-ion cathode chemistries, which harness both transition-metal and lattice-oxygen redox processes to deliver exceptional capacity and energy density. However, their full potential is hindered by intrinsic oxygen instability and structural degradation, resulting in pronounced voltage fade and capacity decay. Here, we present a complex-concentrated anion-doping paradigm in which multiple anions, F, Br, and S, are incorporated into the oxygen sublattice to enhance oxygen-redox and structural stability. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy confirm ultra-stable local oxygen coordination environments during long-term cycling, with detrimental phase transformations and oxygen-loss-induced cavitation dramatically inhibited. Notably, we show that the characteristic LiTM6 transition metal (TM) honeycomb ordering is preserved even after electrochemical cycling. Concurrently, this strategy yields an unprecedented volume change of only 0.63% upon charging to 4.8 V vs. Li+/Li, achieving the first zero-strain LMR cathode. The resulting LMR cathode delivers ultralow voltage fade (1 mV per cycle during the first 100 cycles and becomes negligible in subsequent cycles) and outstanding energy retention (93% after 200 cycles) in a pouch cell configuration. Our complex-concentrated anion-doping concept establishes a broadly applicable strategy for resolving chemo-mechanical failure mechanisms in ceramic intercalation electrodes for next-generation energy storage.

Utility Experience with Inverter Based Resource Impacts on Transmission Protection

High penetration of inverter-based resources (IBR) can adversely affect the transmission protection schemes in the area. With the proliferation of IBRs, utilities are finding out that conventional protection schemes are not adequately equipped to protect the electric systems because the existing system has been designed based on the fault current response of conventional rotating-machine-based generators. In several cases, the available literature does not provide any clear solution for the issues when the protection scheme does not operate properly near IBRs. This report identifies various protection challenges due to IBRs that industry is facing, from the utility perspective. It includes a broad review of all challenges that system protection has experienced so far with high penetration of IBRs. Key issues have been identified based on a survey of different utility protection engineers. Finally, fault event recordings are shown to demonstrate some actual cases of mis-operations of relays near IBRs.

An Overview of Electric Vehicle Load Modeling Strategies for Grid Integration Studies

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, which has motivated the implementation of public policies to promote their use in several countries. However, the high adoption of EVs poses challenges for the electricity sector, as it would imply an increase in energy demand and possible impacts on the power quality (PQ) of the power grid. Therefore, it is important to conduct EV integration studies in the power grid to determine the amount that can be incorporated without causing problems and identify the areas of the power sector that will require reinforcements. Accurate EV load patterns are required for this type of study that, through mathematical modeling, reflect both the dynamic behavior and the factors that influence the decision to recharge EVs. This article aims to present an overview of EVs, examine the different factors considered in the literature for modeling EV load patterns, and review modeling methods. EV load modeling methods are classified into deterministic, statistical, and machine learning. The article shows that each modeling method has its advantages, disadvantages, and data requirements, ranging from simple load modeling to more accurate models requiring large datasets.

From wide to ultrawide-bandgap semiconductors for high power and high frequency electronic devices

Abstract Wide and ultrawide-bandgap (U/WBG) materials have garnered significant attention within the semiconductor device community due to their potential to enhance device performance through their substantial bandgap properties. These exceptional material characteristics can enable more robust and efficient devices, particularly in scenarios involving high power, high frequency, and extreme environmental conditions. Despite the promising outlook, the physics of UWBG materials remains inadequately understood, leading to a notable gap between theoretical predictions and experimental device behavior. To address this knowledge gap and pinpoint areas where further research can have the most significant impact, this review provides an overview of the progress and limitations in U/WBG materials. The review commences by discussing Gallium Nitride, a more mature WBG material that serves as a foundation for establishing fundamental concepts and addressing associated challenges. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the examination of various UWBG materials, including AlGaN/AlN, Diamond, and Ga 2 O 3 . For each of these materials, the review delves into their unique properties, growth methods, and current state-of-the-art devices, with a primary emphasis on their applications in power and radio-frequency electronics.

Queued Up: 2026 Edition, Characteristics of Power Plants Seeking Transmission Interconnection As of the End of 2025 [Slides]

Electric transmission system operators (ISOs, RTOs, or utilities) require proposed power plants seeking to connect to the transmission grid to undergo a series of impact studies before they can be built. This process establishes what new transmission equipment or upgrades may be needed before a project can connect to the system and assigns the costs of that equipment. The lists of projects in this process are known as “interconnection queues”. In collaboration with https://www.interconnection.fyi. Berkeley Lab compiled, aggregated, and cleaned interconnection queue data from >50 transmission grid operators (7 ISO/RTOs and 50 non-ISO balancing areas), which collectively represent ~98% of currently installed U.S. electric generating capacity.

Establishing accretion flares from supermassive black holes as a source of high-energy neutrinos

ABSTRACT The origin of cosmic high-energy neutrinos remains largely unexplained. For high-energy neutrino alerts from IceCube, a coincidence with time-variable emission has been seen for three different types of accreting black holes: (1) a gamma-ray flare from a blazar (TXS 0506+056), (2) an optical transient following a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE; AT2019dsg), and (3) an optical outburst from an active galactic nucleus (AGN; AT2019fdr). For the latter two sources, infrared follow-up observations revealed a powerful reverberation signal due to dust heated by the flare. This discovery motivates a systematic study of neutrino emission from all supermassive black hole with similar dust echoes. Because dust reprocessing is agnostic to the origin of the outburst, our work unifies TDEs and high-amplitude flares from AGN into a population that we dub accretion flares. Besides the two known events, we uncover a third flare that is coincident with a PeV-scale neutrino (AT2019aalc). Based solely on the optical and infrared properties, we estimate a significance of 3.6σ for this association of high-energy neutrinos with three accretion flares. Our results imply that at least ∼10 per cent of the IceCube high-energy neutrino alerts could be due to accretion flares. This is surprising because the sum of the fluence of these flares is at least three orders of magnitude lower compared to the total fluence of normal AGN. It thus appears that the efficiency of high-energy neutrino production in accretion flares is increased compared to non-flaring AGN. We speculate that this can be explained by the high Eddington ratio of the flares.

The glass-ceiling convective regime and the origin and diversity of coronae on Venus

Venus and Earth are rocky planets of roughly the same size and bulk density, yet their surface volcanic and tectonic features appear substantially different. On Venus, the coexistence of large volcanic highlands—interpreted as the surface expression of long-lived mantle plumes—alongside coronae, smaller features thought to be caused by transient thermal diapirs, remains enigmatic. Using two-dimensional numerical models of mantle convection with sharp and broad mineral phase transitions for pyrolite, we show that both scales of upwellings can be generated in a stagnant lid planet with an interior temperature 250 to 400 K warmer than Earth’s. The smaller plumes originate from a ~600 km deep internal layer that exists as a consequence of the different sequence of mineral phase transitions that occur in warmer mantles less processed and differentiated by partial melting and volcanism. Future models that include melting will provide further tests of our hypothesis.

Salt‐Assisted Vapor–Liquid–Solid Growth of 1D van der Waals Materials

The method of salt-assisted vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth is introduced to synthesize 1D nanostructures of trichalcogenide van der Waals (vdW) materials, exemplified by niobium trisulfide (NbS 3 ). The method uses a unique catalyst consisting of an alloy of Au and an alkali metal halide (NaCl) to enable rapid and directional growth. High yields of two types of NbS 3 1D nanostructures, nanowires and nanoribbons, each with sub-ten nanometer diameter, tens of micrometers length, and distinct 1D morphology and growth orientation are demonstrated. Strategies to control the location, size, and morphology of growth, and extend the growth method to synthesize other transition metal trichalcogenides, NbSe 3 and TiS 3 , as nanowires are demonstrated. Finally, the role of the Au–NaCl alloy catalyst in guiding VLS synthesis is described and the growth mechanism based on the relationships measured between structure (growth orientation, morphology, and dimensions) and growth conditions (catalyst volume and growth time) is discussed. These results introduce opportunities to expand the library of emerging 1D vdW materials to make use of their unique properties through controlled growth at nanoscale dimensions.

The impact of metastability on the high-pressure behavior of cerium

The structures adopted by solids under pressure are often assumed to reflect thermodynamic equilibrium, yet in many materials phase selection is strongly influenced by kinetic pathways and microstructural inheritance. Elemental cerium (Ce) exemplifies this challenge, with decades of conflicting reports describing different high-pressure crystal structures emerging under nominally identical conditions. Here we use neutron diffraction from large ( ~ 60 mm 3 ) sample volumes to follow the structural evolution in ultra-high-purity Ce during controlled pressure-temperature cycling between 85 and 295 K and up to 8 GPa. We find that the crystal structure formed at high pressure depends on the compression pathway: slow compression ( ~ 0.25 GPa hr −1 ) at room temperature favors an orthorhombic phase (α'), whereas slow ( ~ 0.25 GPa hr −1 ) and also moderately faster ( ~ 0.5 GPa hr −1 ) compression at low temperature stabilizes a pure monoclinic phase (α"). The low-temperature phase persists metastably over a wide temperature range but transforms irreversibly upon heating above ~ 280 K, or modest pressure cycling. Remarkably, the lower-pressure γ phase remains trapped far beyond the expected stability field, persisting to the highest pressures studied. These observations show that phase selection in Ce is governed by kinetics and microstructural memory rather than equilibrium thermodynamics or sample morphology alone, establishing path dependence as a defining feature of its high-pressure behavior.

Low thermal budget dopant activation in shallow junctions of implanted Si via Tunable plasma enhanced annealing

Low thermal budget (LTB) annealing has become increasingly critical for shallow junctions as semiconductor devices are scaled down. Plasma Enhanced Annealing (PEA) has emerged as a promising LTB annealing process, however its mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, arsenic and boron implanted silicon wafers were subjected to helium or argon ion bombardment generated by annealing plasmas under controlled ion energies and doses in a home-built annealing reactor. The structural and electrical changes were characterized by four-point probe measurements, secondary ion mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. A pronounced reduction in sheet resistance, accompanied by a decrease in the damage layer thickness demonstrates the surface selective annealing capability of PEA process. Comparative studies using He and Ar plasmas and related ion bombardment reveal a dependence of activation efficacy on both ion species and the dopant implantation profile. Furthermore, a multi-step annealing mechanism is proposed, consisting of an initial (low dose) structural recovery stage followed by the generation of “extended” defects and concluded at large doses by an enhanced dopant activation. The proposed annealing kinetics are thought to be controlled by ion flux, dose and energy. Finally, these results highlight PEA as an effective, surface-selective, LTB approach for shallow-dopant activation and near surface annealing, and provide mechanistic insights into PEA processes.

Effects of Composition and Oxidation States on the Structures of Chromium-Containing Sodium Silicate Glasses: Molecular Dynamics Simulations using Machine Learning Interatomic Potentials

Chromium represents a significant challenge for the vitrification of high-level nuclear waste into silicate and borosilicate glasses due to its low solubility and variable oxidation states, which can limit the waste loading due to promotion of crystallization or phase separation during processing. In this study, we modeled chromium containing silicate glasses using molecular dynamics simulations with three machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs), MACE, CHGNet, and PFP were employed, to gain insights on glass composition and oxidation states on the structures of these glasses. One of the goals is to evaluate their ability of these MLIPs to accurately represent the general structure of silicate glasses and chromium local environments as a function of chromium oxidation states. Density Functional Theory (DFT) based calculations and experimental data such as neutron structure factors were used to validate the structural models. It was found that the foundation models of all three MLIPs are able to reproduce general structural features of the sodium silicate glass structure consistent with experimental and DFT data, but only CHGNet and PFP can accurately capture the oxidation states and local environment of chromium: tetrahedral for Cr6+ and octahedral for Cr3+. Furthermore, we studied the effect of varying Cr3+/ Cr6+ (Cr3+/Crtotal) ratio and total chromium content using PFP. Our results show that Cr6+ enhances network polymerization by reducing non-bridging oxygens through Na? charge compensation required due to the formation of chromate (CrO42-) species, while Cr³? acts as a network modifier that disrupts connectivity. System size effects on the structural characteristics and chromium environments were also tested using the PFP potential. This work highlights the importance of careful validation on the precision, transferability, and potential of MLIPs for modeling glasses containing transition metal elements that can exist in multiple oxidation states. It is also encouraging to see the foundational models are all three MLFFs are able to reproduce the basic sodium silicate glass structures, while suggesting additional training or refining is needed to improve the description of more complex systems containing transition metals.

Virtual Growth of SRF Materials

Niobium's native surface oxide affects SRF cavity and superconducting qubit performance, motivating interest in controlling its crystalline structure. We combine a literature-derived machine-learning analysis with temperature-dependent XRD to study crystalline ordering in Nb2O5. Random Forest models, trained on 74 processing conditions from 17 papers and validated by leave-one-group-out cross-validation, predicted broad crystallinity outcomes well (balanced accuracy 0.809), but struggled with specific polymorph identity (0.577). Annealing temperature was the dominant predictor across all targets; oxygen partial pressure showed negligible importance, reflecting narrow literature coverage rather than physical irrelevance. Temperature-dependent XRD on anodized and H2O2-treated Niobium showed structural evolution consistent with the machine learning predictions. Our model and overall approach provide a data-driven framework for identifying and optimizing conditions that promote crystallization in initially amorphous oxides. This framework can guide the selection of growth and post-annealing conditions for Nb surfaces by narrowing the experimental parameter space, thereby reducing trial-and-error efforts in developing oxide structures relevant to SRF applications.
