Anisotropic index of refraction and structural properties of hexagonal boron nitride epilayers probed by spectroscopic ellipsometry

The anisotropic index of refraction of 200 μm thick boron-10 enriched hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) freestanding epilayers grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition has been measured using spectroscopic ellipsometry in the UV (4.0–5.1 eV) spectral range. It was found that the index of refraction for the polarization mode with an electric field perpendicular to the c-axis (ordinary, n o ) is much higher than that with an electric field parallel to the c-axis (extraordinary, n e ). By inclusion of turbostratic- (t-) phase layers within h-BN having an average inclination angle (θ) with respect to the ideal c-plane, a simple method for quantifying θ has been deduced. Our results revealed that the presence of t-phase layers decreases the optical anisotropy of h-BN and that a signature of improved crystalline quality is an increase in the ordinary index of refraction (n o ) as a result of the average incline angle θ approaching 0° and predicted that n o = 2.7 and n e = 1.5 at 280 nm for single crystalline h-BN epilayers. More importantly, our results demonstrated that spectroscopic ellipsometry is an effective technique for characterizing the crystalline quality of h-BN epilayers with the advantages of being noninvasive and highly sensitive.

Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of V2CoAl: Experimental and computational study

Here, we present results of combined experimental and computations study of V2CoAl, a Heusler alloy that exhibits nearly perfect spin-polarization. Our calculations indicate that this material maintains a high degree of spin-polarization (over 90%) in the wide range of lattice parameters, except at the largest considered unit cell volume. The magnetic alignment of V2CoAl is ferrimagnetic, due to the antialignment of the magnetic moments of vanadium atoms in their two sublattices. The calculated total magnetic moment per formula unit is nearly integer at the optimal lattice parameter and at the smaller volumes of the unit cell, but it deviated from the integer values as the unit cell expands. This is consistent with the calculated variation in the degree of spin polarization with lattice constant. The expected ferrimagnetic behavior has been observed in the arc-melted V2CoAl sample, with a Curie temperature of about 80 K. However, the saturation magnetization is significantly smaller than the theoretical prediction of ∼2 μB/f.u., most likely due to the observed B2-type atomic disorder. The samples exhibit metallic electron transport across the measurement range of 2 K to 300 K.

Electronic and structural properties of single-crystal Jahn–Teller active Co 1+x Mn 2–x O 4 thin films

Recent investigations on spinel CoMn 2 O 4 have shown its potential for applications in water splitting and fuel cell technologies as it exhibits strong catalytic behavior through oxygen reduction reactivity. To further understand this material, we report for the first time the synthesis of single-crystalline Co 1+x Mn 2-x O 4 thin films using molecular beam epitaxy. By varying sample composition, we establish links between cation stoichiometry and material properties using in-situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and spectroscopic ellipsometry. Our results indicate that excess Co ions occupy interstitial tetrahedral sites up to a certain stoichiometry, then are substitutional for octahedrally-coordinated Mn beyond this threshold. Here, we compare these results with density functional theory models of stoichiometric CoMn 2 O 4 to understand how the Jahn-Teller distortion and hybridization in Mn-O bonds impact the ability to hole dope the material with excess Co. The findings provide important insights into CoMn 2 O 4 and related spinel oxides for future application as inexpensive oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

Laser metal deposition of refractory high-entropy alloys for high-throughput synthesis and structure-property characterization

Progress in materials development is often paced by the time required to produce and evaluate a large number of alloys with different chemical compositions. This applies especially to refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs), which are difficult to synthesize and process by conventional methods. To evaluate a possible way to accelerate the process, high-throughput laser metal deposition was used in this work to prepare a quinary RHEA, TiZrNbHfTa, as well as its quaternary and ternary subsystems by in-situ alloying of elemental powders. Compositionally graded variants of the quinary RHEA were also analyzed. Our results show that the influence of various parameters such as powder shape and purity, alloy composition, and especially the solidification range, on the processability, microstructure, porosity, and mechanical properties can be investigated rapidly. The strength of these alloys was mainly affected by the oxygen and nitrogen contents of the starting powders, while substitutional solid solution strengthening played a minor role.

Structure-Property Relationships of Additively Manufactured Ni-Nb Alloys [Slides]

In this work, scratch and nanoindentation testing was used to determine hardness, fracture toughness, strain rate sensitivity, and activation volumes on additively manufactured graded and uniform Ni-Nb bulk specimens. Characterization showed the presence of a two phase system consisting of Ni 3 Nb and Ni 6 Nb 7 intermetallics. Intermetallics were multimodal in nature, having grain and cell sizes spanning from a few nanometers to 10s of micrometers. The unique microstructure resulted in impressively high hardness, up to 20 GPa in the case of the compositionally graded sample. AM methods with surface deformation techniques are a useful way to rapidly probe material properties and alloy composition space.
