Two novel layered compounds BaCuSi 2 Pn 3 (Pn = P, As) adopting new structure types are reported. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, both compounds are composed of unique Cu–Si–Pn layers featuring CuPn 3 and Si 2 Pn 6 structural motifs found in other archetypal pnictide materials. The stacking of the isostructural Cu–Si–Pn layers is different for phosphide and arsenide compounds. Synthesis from elements aided by in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction resulted in the obtainment of bulk powders with a minimized amount of admixtures. Experimentally measured physical properties of BaCuSi 2 As 3 unexpectedly showed metal-like behavior at temperatures above 15 K, despite the fact that density functional theory calculations predict a small band gap of 0.4 eV. BaCuSi 2 As 3 exhibits ultralow thermal conductivity, which can be explained by the combination of a layered crystal structure with alternating covalent and ionic bonding, which feature rattling of Cu atoms similar to that in tetrahedrites.
Hard stoichiometric WB 4 is synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.
Understanding the structural properties and chemical bonding in complex multinary chalcogenides is highly valuable, as it provides vital information for controlling their physical properties to suit various technological applications. Here, we report on the structural, thermal, and electronic properties of PbCuBiS 3 by incorporating an experimental and theoretical investigation of this material. Analysis of the experimental temperature-dependent heat capacity and thermal conductivity data show that weak bonding and strong lattice anharmonicity give rise to ultralow thermal conductivity. Chemical bonding information obtained from the density functional theory electronic calculations reveal significant antibonding interactions that underscore the dominant role of the Cu-S tetrahedra on occupied antibonding states, as well as a highly distorted Pb/Bi-S environment inducing weak bonding and strong lattice anharmonicity. This study broadens our understanding of the structure-property relationships for this material, and can be useful for developing this and similar chalcogenide materials for potential applications of interest.
Nonfused-ring electron acceptors (NFREA)s have been proposed as alternatives to fused-ring acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPV)s. The simpler molecular design of NFREAs results in a reduced synthetic complexity, potentially lowering manufacturing costs, and easier access to desired optoelectronic properties by structural modifications. However, they have not seen the same rise in popularity as fused nonfullerene acceptors (NFA)s due to their lower performances in devices. In this work, we explore structure–property relationships of three NFREA molecules based on thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (TT) and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene (BDT) cores and malononitrile functionalized-isatin end group acceptors. We describe their synthetic routes, computational analysis, and photophysical and electronic properties. Here, we investigated the effect of changing the core from TT to BDT on electronic properties of the molecules─a result of raising/lowering of the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels. We also explored the effect of branched vs nonbranched alkyl groups on the morphological and blend-capabilities in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OPV devices. These effects were then reflected in the overall device performances, primarily due to favorable FMO energy alignment between the NFREA and polymer. To investigate the behavior of the excited states of the NFREAs within the active layer of the devices, we performed time-resolved microwave conductivity and transient absorption experiments, which confirmed that the TT molecules exhibited very low conductance while the BDT molecule showed moderate photoconductance. Our combined theoretical, synthetic, device, and charge carrier dynamics studies of these materials reveal the central role that structure–property relationships play in future molecular designs of NFREAs that can perform as well as their fused counterparts.
Mn-Bi alloys modified with Mg and other elements were recently developed into promising rare-earth-free permanent magnets through successive melt-spinning, warm compaction, and short magnetic-field annealing. This letter reports herein on the crystal structures, texture, and magnetic properties observed in Mn 50 Bi 49-x Mg x Sb 0.5 In 0.5 alloys (x = 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5) throughout these processing steps. The Mg substitution favors MnBi-based intermetallic phases over the Bi- and Mn-based solid solutions and the stable α intermetallic phase over the metastable β' intermetallic phase. Magnesium increases the c/a ratio of the α phase lattice parameters for all studied x values and it increases the degree of the field-annealing-induced texture for x ≤ 3. The effect of Mg on coercivity is explained as combination of a positive one via the α phase magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a negative one via the development of texture. The effect of the substitution on the maximum energy product additionally involves the decreasing density of the alloys; the optimum x is found to be ≈3. Additionally reported are the thermal properties of selected alloys. The mechanism of field-annealing effect on the coercivity is briefly discussed.
