New solutions of nonlocal NLS, mKdV and Hirota equations

In this paper, we provide several novel solutions of the Ablowitz–Musslimani and Yang’s versions of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, nonlocal modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) as well as nonlocal Hirota equations. Further, in each case we compare and contrast with the corresponding solutions of the relevant local equation. In addition, we provide new solutions of the local NLS, local mKdV and local Hirota equations which are not the solutions of the corresponding nonlocal equations.

New solutions of coupled nonlocal NLS and coupled nonlocal mKdV equations

In this study, we provide several novel solutions of the coupled Ablowitz–Musslimani (AM) version of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation and the coupled nonlocal modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equation. In each case we compare and contrast the corresponding solutions of the relevant coupled local equations. Further, we provide new solutions of the coupled local NLS and coupled local mKdV equations which are not the solutions of the corresponding nonlocal equations. We also show that the nonlocal coupled (as well as uncoupled) mKdV equations have hidden Galilean invariance and admit novel solutions.

Consequences and Control of Multiscale Order/Disorder in Chiral Magnetic Textures

Transition metal intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are promising platforms for next-generation spintronic devices based on their wide range of electronic and magnetic phases, which can be tuned by varying the host lattice or intercalant’s identity, stoichiometry, or spatial order. Some of these compounds host a chiral magnetic phase in which the helical winding of magnetic moments propagates along a high-symmetry crystalline axis. Previous studies have demonstrated that variation in intercalant concentrations can have a dramatic effect on the formation of chiral domains and ensemble magnetic properties. However, a systematic and comprehensive study of how atomic-scale order and disorder impact these chiral magnetic textures is so far lacking. Here, we leverage a combination of imaging modes in the (scanning) transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) to directly probe (dis)order across multiple length scales and show how subtle changes in the atomic lattice can tune the mesoscale spin textures and bulk magnetic response in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , with direct implications for the fundamental understanding and technological implementation of such compounds.

Novel superposed kinklike and pulselike solutions for several nonlocal nonlinear equations

In this work, we show that a number of nonlocal nonlinear equations, including the Ablowitz–Musslimani and Yang variant of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the nonlocal modified Korteweg de Vries (mKdV) equation, and the nonlocal Hirota equation, admit novel kinklike and pulselike superposed periodic solutions. Furthermore, we show that the nonlocal mKdV equation also admits the superposed (hyperbolic) kink–antikink solution. In addition, we show that while the nonlocal Ablowitz–Musslimani variant of the NLS admits complex parity-time reversal-invariant kink and pulse solutions, neither the local NLS nor the Yang variant of the nonlocal NLS admits such solutions. Finally, except for the Yang variant of the nonlocal NLS, we show that the other three nonlocal equations admit both the kink and pulse solutions in the same model.

Topological spin/structure couplings in layered chiral magnet Cr 1/3 TaS 2 : The discovery of spiral magnetic superstructure

Significance Magnets in which chirality of crystal lattice gives rise to noncollinear spin orders are ideal playgrounds for studies of novel physical phenomena originating from the nontrivial topology of magnetic textures. Most studies have been focused on homochiral materials, while topological magnetic states of heterochiral magnets have rarely been explored. Here, we report a layered chiral helimagnet with highly tunable topological heterochiral states. Tuning the chiral domain density, we have observed a topological magnetic texture that has the form of a spiral unfolding in the radial direction. In weak in-plane fields, this spiral magnetic superstructure transforms into a nonspiral array of concentric rings. Our results open a horizon for studies of tunable topological magnetic textures.

Design of nematic liquid crystals to control microscale dynamics

The dynamics of small particles, both living such as swimming bacteria and inanimate, such as colloidal spheres, has fascinated scientists for centuries. If one could learn how to control and streamline their chaotic motion, that would open technological opportunities in the transformation of stored or environmental energy into systematic motion, with applications in micro-robotics, transport of matter, guided morphogenesis. This review presents an approach to command microscale dynamics by replacing an isotropic medium with a liquid crystal. Orientational order and associated properties, such as elasticity, surface anchoring, and bulk anisotropy, enable new dynamic effects, ranging from the appearance and propagation of particle-like solitary waves to self-locomotion of an active droplet. By using photoalignment, the liquid crystal can be patterned into predesigned structures. In the presence of the electric field, these patterns enable the transport of solid and fluid particles through nonlinear electrokinetics rooted in anisotropy of conductivity and permittivity. Director patterns command the dynamics of swimming bacteria, guiding their trajectories, polarity of swimming, and distribution in space. This guidance is of a higher level of complexity than a simple following of the director by rod-like microorganisms. Namely, the director gradients mediate hydrodynamic interactions of bacteria to produce an active force and collective polar modes of swimming. The patterned director could also be engraved in a liquid crystal elastomer. When an elastomer coating is activated by heat or light, these patterns produce a deterministic surface topography. The director gradients define an activation force that shapes the elastomer in a manner similar to the active stresses triggering flows in active nematics. Finally, the patterned elastomer substrates could be used to define the orientation of cells in living tissues. The liquid-crystal guidance holds a major promise in achieving the goal of commanding microscale active flows.

Enhancement of magnetic domain wall velocity via resonant dissipation of standing wave modes of domain wall structure with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

The dynamic behaviors of magnetic domain walls have significant implications for developing advanced spintronic devices. In this study, we investigate the intriguing resonance phenomenon within the magnetic domain wall structure, focusing on the dissipation mechanism and its impact on domain wall dynamic motion. By applying a static external magnetic field, we observe a remarkable amplification of domain wall velocity through the resonant excitations of the flexure modes. The resonance of the flexure mode exerts an indirect influence on the domain wall velocity through energy dissipation, leading to a significant enhancement from the predictions of the one-dimensional Walker model. We establish a robust model platform rooted in energy dissipation allows comprehensive understanding the dramatic enhancement of domain wall velocity observed during width-directional flexure mode resonance. By directly quantifying energy dissipation, our approach provides highly effective and accurate estimates of domain wall velocity, surpassing previous methods that focus solely on the instantaneous dynamics of the domain wall structure. These findings offer crucial insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing the dynamics of domain walls and other magnetic systems, such as magnetic skyrmions, bubbles, and magnetic vortices, paving the way for development and optimization of next-generation spintronic devices.

Relaxation times for Bose-Einstein condensation in axion miniclusters

We study the Bose condensation of scalar dark matter in the presence of both gravitational and self-interactions. Axions and other scalar dark matter in gravitationally bound miniclusters or dark matter halos are expected to condense into Bose-Einstein condensates called Bose stars. This process has been shown to occur through attractive self-interactions of the axionlike particles or through the field’s self gravitation. We show that in the high-occupancy regime of scalar dark matter, the Boltzmann collision integral does not describe either gravitational or self-interactions, and derive kinetic equations valid for these interactions. We use this formalism to compute relaxation times for the Bose-Einstein condensation, and find that condensation into Bose stars could occur within the lifetime of the Universe. The self-interactions reduce the condensation time only when they are very strong.

Creating kinks with quantum mediation

We consider the creation of kink-antikink pairs of a scalar field ϕ by the scattering of classical wave packets of a second scalar field ψ when there are no direct interactions between ϕ and ψ . The creation becomes possible only due to a quantum field that interacts with both ϕ and ψ . We scan parameter space and find it favorable for kink production when the initial wave packets have large total energy and wide spatial extent but scatter at low velocities. Torque and Angular-Momentum Transfer in Merging Rotating Bose-Einstein Condensates

When rotating classical fluid drops merge together, angular momentum can be advected from one to another due to the viscous shear flow at the drop interface. It remains elusive what the corresponding mechanism is in inviscid quantum fluids such as Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In this work, we report our theoretical study of an initially static BEC merging with a rotating BECin three-dimensional space along the rotational axis. We show that a solitonlike sheet, resembling a corkscrew, spontaneously emerges at the interface. Furthermore, rapid angular momentum transfer at a constant rate universally proportional to the initial angular-momentum density is observed. Strikingly, this transfer does not necessarily involve fluid advection or drifting of the quantized vortices. We reveal that the corkscrew structure can exert a torque that directly creates angular momentum in the static BEC and annihilates angular momentum in the rotating BEC. Uncovering this intriguing angular momentum transport mechanism may benefit our understanding of various coherent matter-wave systems, spanning from atomtronics on chips to dark matter BECs at cosmic scales.

Superposed hyperbolic kink and pulse solutions of coupled $φ$ 4 , NLS and mKdV equations

Here, in this paper, we obtain novel solutions of a coupled $φ$ 4 , a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation and a coupled modified Korteweg de Vries equation which can be re-expressed as a linear superposition of either the sum or the difference of two hyperbolic pulse solutions or the sum of either a two-kink or a kink and an antikink solution. These results demonstrate that the notion of superposed solutions extends to coupled nonlinear equations as well.
