Search for the isospin-violating decays 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c. and 𝜂 𝑐 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.

Using a sample of (2712.4 ± 14.3) × 10 6 𝜓⁡(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a search for the isospin-violating decays 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.(𝐽 = 0,1,2) and 𝜂 𝑐 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c. No significant signal for 𝜒 𝑐⁢𝐽 or 𝜂 𝑐 is observed in the $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ invariant mass distribution. The upper limits on the branching fractions at the 90% confidence level are set to be ℬ⁡(𝜒 𝑐⁢0 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.) < 1.5 × 10 −6 , ℬ⁡(𝜒 𝑐⁢1 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.) < 1.6 × 10 −6 , ℬ⁡(𝜒 𝑐⁢2 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.) < 1.7 × 10 −6 , and ℬ⁡(𝜂 𝑐 → $Λ\bar{⁢Σ}^0$ + c.c.) < 6.2 × 10 −5 for the first time.

Eliminating beam-induced depolarizing effects in the hydrogen jet target for high-precision proton beam polarimetry at the electron-ion collider

We analyze beam-induced depolarizing effects in the hydrogen jet target (HJET) at the relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), which has been used for absolute hadron beam polarimetry and shall be employed at the electron-ion collider (EIC). The EIC’s higher bunch repetition frequencies and shorter bunch durations shift beam harmonics to frequencies that can resonantly drive hyperfine transitions in hydrogen, threatening to depolarize the target atoms. Using frequency-domain analysis of beam harmonics and hyperfine transition frequencies, we establish a photon emission threshold above which beam-induced fields are too weak to cause significant depolarization. For EIC injection (23.5 GeV) and flattop (275 GeV), beam-induced depolarization through the bunch structure renders operation at the current RHIC magnetic guide field at the target (𝐵 0 =120⁢ mT) untenable. Increasing the magnetic guide field at the target to 𝐵 0 ≈ 400⁢ mT moves all hyperfine transition frequencies to at least 3 times the cutoff frequency, ensuring reliable absolute beam polarimetry with the required 1% precision at the EIC.

Partial wave analysis of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓 and cross section measurement of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 ± ⁢𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ∓ from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV

Based on 12.0 fb −1 of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − collision data samples collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV, a partial wave analysis is performed for the process 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓. The cross sections for the subprocesses 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) − + c.c. → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓, 𝑓 0 ⁡(980)⁢(→ 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − )⁢𝐽/𝜓, and (𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) S−wave⁢ 𝐽/𝜓 are measured for the first time. The mass and width of the 𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ± are determined to be 3884.6 ± 0.7 ± 3.3 MeV/𝑐 2 and 37.2 ± 1.3 ± 6.6 MeV, respectively. The first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The final state (𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ) S−wave ⁢𝐽/𝜓 dominates the process 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝐽/𝜓. By analyzing the cross sections of 𝜋 ±⁢ 𝑍 𝑐 ⁢(3900) ∓ and 𝑓 0 ⁡(980)⁢𝐽/𝜓, 𝑌⁡(4220) has been observed. Its mass and width are determined to be 4225.7 ± 4.1 ± 3.4 MeV/𝑐 2 and 57.5 ± 9.4 ± 12.1 MeV, respectively.

Exploring the onset of collectivity approaching 𝑁=40 with masses of manganese isotopes

Isotopes in the region of the nuclear chart below 68 Ni have been the subject of intense experimental and theoretical effort due to the potential onset of a new “island of inversion” when crossing the harmonic oscillator subshell closure at 𝑁=40. Here, we have measured the masses of 64−68 Mn using TITAN's multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer, resulting in the first precision mass measurements of 67 Mn and 68 Mn. These results are compared to ab initio calculations and modern shell model calculations and show an increase in collectivity approaching 𝑁=40.

Measurement of the Born cross section for 𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − → 𝜂⁢ℎ 𝑐 at center-of-mass energies between 4.1 and 4.6 GeV

We measure the Born cross section for the reaction 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − → 𝜂⁢ℎ 𝑐 from $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 4.129 to 4.600 GeV using datasets collected by the BESIII detector running at the BEPCII collider. A resonant structure in the cross-section line shape near 4.200 GeV is observed with a statistical significance of 7⁢𝜎. The parameters of this resonance are measured to be 𝑀 = 4188.8 ± 4.7 ± 8.0 MeV/𝑐 2 and Γ = 49 ± 16 ± 19 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Microstructure-Property Relationships in Epitaxial Cu(In, Ga)Se2 Solar-Cell Absorbers

Epitaxially grown Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) absorber layers were analyzed by various techniques in scanning electron microscopy in order to reveal microstructure-property relationships in these thin films. Owing to their epitaxial nature, these CIGS absorber layers do not contain any grain boundaries, but only anti-phase domains (APDs) and dislocations. By combining electron channeling-contrast imaging, electron backscatter diffraction, and cathodoluminescence (CL), in some cases on identical specimen positions of polished cross-sections of CIGS/Mo/glass stacks, it was possible to correlate the presence and orientations of APDs and dislocations with the lateral distributions of the CL intensity and emission-peak energy. We studied CIGS layers with three different [Ga]/([Ga]+[In]) ratios as well as with and without NaF/KF treatments. Considerable differences between the CIGS layer properties in the microstructure-property relationships were found, depending on the growth parameters. Dislocations in the epitaxial CIGS layers do not tend to exhibit strong CL intensity decreases, which contrasts with the situation in numerous other semiconductor materials.

Fluorine-free strongly dipolar polymers exhibit tunable ferroelectricity

Current research on ferroelectric polymers centers predominantly on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)–based fluoropolymers because of their superior performance. However, they are considered “forever chemicals” with environmental concerns. Here, we describe a family of rationally designed fluorine-free ferroelectric polymers, featuring a polyoxypropylene main chain and disulfonyl alkyl side chains with a C3 spacer: −SO 2 CH 2 CHRCH 2 SO 2 − (R = −H or −CH 3 ). Both experimental and simulation results demonstrate that strong dipole-dipole interactions between neighboring disulfonyl groups induce ferroelectric ordering in the condensed state, which can be tailored by changing the R group: ferroelectric for R = −H or relaxor ferroelectric for R = −CH 3 . At low electric fields, the relaxor polymer exhibits electroactuation and electrocaloric performance comparable with those of state-of-the-art PVDF-based tetrapolymers.

The First SeaWiFS HPLC Analysis Round-Robin Experiment (SeaHARRE-1)

Four laboratories, which had contributed to various aspects of SeaWiFS calibration and validation activities, participated in the first SeaWiFS HPLC Analysis Round-Robin Experiment (SeaHARRE-1): Horn Point Laboratory (USA), the Joint Research Centre (Italy), the Laboratoire de Physique et Chimie Marines (France), and the Marine and Coastal Management group (South Africa). The analyses of the data are presented in Chapter 1 and the individual methods of the four groups are presented in Chapters 2-5. The average (or overall) conclusions of the round-robin are derived from 12 in situ stations occupied during a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, although, only 11 stations are used in the analyses. The data set is composed of 12 replicates taken during each sampling opportunity with 3 replicates going to each of the 4 laboratories. The average (or overall) results from the intercomparison of 15 pigments or pigment associations are as follows (in some cases, data subsets that exclude pigments which were not analyzed by all the laboratories, or that had unusually large variances, are used to exclude a variety of problematic pigments): a) the accuracy of the four methods in determining the concentration of total chlorophyll a is 7.9%, (one method did not separate mono- and divinyl chlorophyll a, and if the samples containing significant divinyl chlorophyll a concentrations are ignored, the four methods have an accuracy of 6.7%); b) the accuracy in determining the full set of pigments is 19.1%; c) there is a reduction in accuracy of approximately - 12.2% for every decade (factor of 10) decrease in concentration (based on a data subset); d) the precision of the four methods using a subset data is 8.617( 6.2% for an edited subset); e) the repeatability of the four methods using the subset data is 9.2% (7.2%; for an edited subset, and f) the reproducibility of the four methods using the subset data is 21.31% (15.0% for an edited subset).

Cyclin E-p27 opposition and regulation of the G1 phase of the cell cycle in the murine neocortical PVE: a quantitative analysis of mRNA in situ hybridization

We have analyzed the expression patterns of mRNAs of five cell cycle related proteins in the ventricular zone of the neocortical cerebral wall over the course of the neuronogenetic interval in the mouse. One set of mRNAs (cyclin E and p21) are initially expressed at high levels but expression then falls to a low asymptote. A second set (p27, cyclin B and cdk2) are initially expressed at low levels but ascend to peak levels only to decline again. These patterns divide the overall neuronogenetic interval into three phases. In phase 1 cyclin E and p21 levels of mRNA expression are high, while those of mRNAs of p27, cdk2 and cyclin B are low. In this phase the fraction of cells leaving the cycle after each mitosis, Q, is low and the duration of the G1 phase, TG1, is short. In phase 2 levels of expression of cyclin E and p21 fall to asymptote while levels of expression of mRNA of the other three proteins reach their peaks. Q increases to approach 0.5 and TG1 increases even more rapidly to approach its maximum length. In phase 3 levels of expression of cyclin E and p21 mRNAs remain low and those of the mRNAs of the other three proteins fall. TG1 becomes maximum and Q rapidly increases to 1.0. The character of these phases can be understood in part as consequences of the reciprocal regulatory influence of p27 and cyclin E and of the rate limiting functions of p27 at the restriction point and of cyclin E at the G1 to S transition.

The influence of SV40 immortalization of human fibroblasts on p53-dependent radiation responses

The simian virus 40 large tumor antigen (SV40 Tag) has been ascribed many functions critical to viral propagation, including binding to the mammalian tumor suppressor p53. Recent studies have demonstrated that SV40-transformed murine cells have functional p53. The status of p53 in SV40-immortalized human cells, however, has not been characterized. We have found that in response to ionizing radiation, p53-dependent p21 transactivation activity is present, albeit reduced, in SV40-immortalized cells and that this activity can be further reduced with either dominant negative p53 expression or higher SV40 Tag expression. Furthermore, overexpression of p53 in SV40-immortalized ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) cells restores p53-dependent p21 induction to typical A-T levels. All SV40-immortalized cell lines exhibited an absence of G1 arrest. Moreover, all SV40-immortalized cell lines exhibited increased apoptosis relative to primary cells in response to ionizing radiation, suggesting that SV40 immortalization results in a unique phenotype with regard to DNA damage responses. BOUSSOLE: A Joint CNRS-INSU, ESA, CNES, and NASA Ocean Color Calibration and Validation Activity

This report presents the Bouee pour l'acquisition de Series Optiques a Long Terme (BOUSSOLE) project, the primary objectives of which are to provide a long-term time series of optical properties in support of a) calibration and validation activities associated with satellite ocean color missions, and b) bio-optical research in oceanic waters. The following are included in the report: 1) an introduction to the rationale for establishing the project; 2) a definition of vicarious calibration and the specific requirements attached to it; 3) the organization of the project and the characteristics of the measurement site--in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea; 4) a qualitative overview of the collected data; 5) details about the buoy that was specifically designed and built for this project; 6) data collection protocols and data processing techniques; 7) a quantitative summary of the collected data, and a discussion of some sample results, including match-up analyses for the currently operational ocean color sensors, namely MERIS, SeaWiFS, and MODIS; and 8) preliminary results of the vicarious radiometric calibration of MERIS, including a tentative uncertainty budget. The results of this match-up analysis allow performance comparisons of various ocean color sensors to be performed, demonstrating the ability of the BOUSSOLE activity, i.e., combining a dedicated platform and commercial-off-the-shelf instrumentation, to provide data qualified to monitor the quality of ocean color products on the long term.

The Third SeaWiFS HPLC Analysis Round-Robin Experiment (SeaHARRE-3)

Seven international laboratories specializing in the determination of marine pigment concentrations using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were intercompared using in situ samples and a mixed pigment sample. The field samples were collected primarily from oligotrophic waters, although mesotrophic and eutrophic waters were also sampled to create a dynamic range in chlorophyll concentration spanning approximately two orders of magnitude (0.020 1.366 mg m^{-3}) The intercomparisons were used to establish the following: a) the uncertainties in quantitating individual pigments and higher-order variables (sums, ratios, and indices); b) the reduction in uncertainties as a result of applying quality assurance (QA) procedures; c) the importance of establishing a properly defined referencing system in the computation of uncertainties; d) the analytical benefits of performance metrics, and e) the utility of a laboratory mix in understanding method performance. In addition, the remote sensing requirements for the in situ determination of total chlorophyll a were investigated to determine whether or not the average uncertainty for this measurement is being satisfied.

The Fourth SeaWiFS HPLC Analysis Round-Robin Experiment (SeaHARRE-4)

Ten international laboratories specializing in the determination of marine pigment concentrations using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were intercompared using in situ samples and a mixed pigment sample. Although prior Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Round-Robin Experiment (SeaHARRE) activities conducted in open-ocean waters covered a wide dynamic range in productivity, and some of the samples were collected in the coastal zone, none of the activities involved exclusively coastal samples. Consequently, SeaHARRE-4 was organized and executed as a strictly coastal activity and the field samples were collected from primarily eutrophic waters within the coastal zone of Denmark. The more restrictive perspective limited the dynamic range in chlorophyll concentration to approximately one and a half orders of magnitude (previous activities covered more than two orders of magnitude). The method intercomparisons were used for the following objectives: a) estimate the uncertainties in quantitating individual pigments and higher-order variables formed from sums and ratios; b) confirm if the chlorophyll a accuracy requirements for ocean color validation activities (approximately 25%, although 15% would allow for algorithm refinement) can be met in coastal waters; c) establish the reduction in uncertainties as a result of applying QA procedures; d) show the importance of establishing a properly defined referencing system in the computation of uncertainties; e) quantify the analytical benefits of performance metrics, and f) demonstrate the utility of a laboratory mix in understanding method performance. In addition, the remote sensing requirements for the in situ determination of total chlorophyll a were investigated to determine whether or not the average uncertainty for this measurement is being satisfied.

Evaluation of Fast-Time Wake Vortex Models using Wake Encounter Flight Test Data

This paper describes a methodology for the integration and evaluation of fast-time wake models with flight data. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration conducted detailed flight tests in 1995 and 1997 under the Aircraft Vortex Spacing System Program to characterize wake vortex decay and wake encounter dynamics. In this study, data collected during Flight 705 were used to evaluate NASA's fast-time wake transport and decay models. Deterministic and Monte-Carlo simulations were conducted to define wake hazard bounds behind the wake generator. The methodology described in this paper can be used for further validation of fast-time wake models using en-route flight data, and for determining wake turbulence constraints in the design of air traffic management concepts.

A Coupled Probabilistic Wake Vortex and Aircraft Response Prediction Model

Wake vortex spacing standards along with weather and runway occupancy time, restrict terminal area throughput and impose major constraints on the overall capacity and efficiency of the National Airspace System (NAS). For more than two decades, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been conducting research on characterizing wake vortex behavior in order to develop fast-time wake transport and decay prediction models. It is expected that the models can be used in the systems level design of advanced air traffic management (ATM) concepts that safely increase the capacity of the NAS. It is also envisioned that at a later stage of maturity, these models could potentially be used operationally, in groundbased spacing and scheduling systems as well as on the flight deck.
