Measurement of the top quark pole mass using $ \textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}} $+jet events in the dilepton final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A measurement of the top quark pole mass $\mathcal{m}^\text{pole}_\text{t}$ in events where a top quark-antiquark pair ($\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$) is produced in association with at least one additional jet ($\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ +jet) is presented. This analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36.3 fb -1 . Events with two opposite-sign leptons in the final state (e + e – , μ + μ – , e ± μ ∓ ) are analyzed. The reconstruction of the main observable and the event classification are optimized using multivariate analysis techniques based on machine learning. The production cross section is measured as a function of the inverse of the invariant mass of the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ +jet system at the parton level using a maximum likelihood unfolding. Given a reference parton distribution function (PDF), the top quark pole mass is extracted using the theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order. For the ABMP16NLO PDF, this results in $\mathcal{m}^\text{pole}_\text{t}$ = 172.93 ± 1.36 GeV.

Higgs boson decay to charmonia via $\mathcal{c}$-quark fragmentation

We calculate the decay branching fractions of the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ and $n_c$ via the charm-quark fragmentation mechanism for the color-singlet and color-octet states in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The decay rates are governed by the charm-quark Yukawa coupling, unlike the decay H → $J/ψ$ +γ, which is dominated by the $γ^*- J/ψ$ mixing. We find that the decay branching fractions can be about 2 x 10 -5 for H →$c\bar c$ + $J/ψ$, and 6 x 10 -5 for H →$c\bar c$ + $n-c$. We comment on the perspective of searching for the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ transition at the High-Luminosity LHC for testing the charm-quark Yukawa coupling.

Measurement of the top quark pair production cross section in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.36$ TeV

The inclusive cross section for top quark pair ($\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$) production in lead-lead (PbPb) collisions is reported for the first time at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.36 TeV. The analysis uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.58 nb −1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2023. The $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ production cross section, ${\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}}={3.42}_{-0.51}^{+0.54}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.43}^{+0.50}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)$ μb, is measured in dilepton final states using a fit to a multivariate discriminator that combines the decay electron and muon kinematic properties with the multiplicity of bottom quark jets. The result is consistent with perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy employing several nuclear parton distribution functions. In addition, the Drell–Yan production cross section (σ DY ) for dilepton masses above 10 GeV and the ratio of $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ to DY cross sections $\left({R}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}\right)$ are found to be compatible with the NNLO predictions. The observables ${\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}}$, σ DY , and ${R}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}/\mathrm{DY}}$ are measured separately for central and semicentral PbPb collisions to investigate for the first time the dependence of top quark production on the collision impact parameter.

Measurement of the t-channel single top quark cross section in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV

The single top quark t-channel production cross section is measured in proton-proton collisions at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV, using data recorded with the CMS detector in 2017, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 302 pb −1 , and resulting in the first CMS measurement of the process at that energy. Events with one electron or muon and two or more jets, among which at least one is identified as originating from a b quark fragmentation, are analyzed. The combined cross section of single top quark (tq) and single top antiquark ($\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}$) production is $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}+\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={25.5}_{-3.5}^{+3.6}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-3.9}^{+4.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.5\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. The individual cross sections are measured to be $\sigma \left(\mathrm{tq}\right)={17.7}_{-2.7}^{+2.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.4}^{+2.6}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.3\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb and $\sigma \left(\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{q}\right)={6.7}_{-1.6}^{+2.4}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-2.5}^{+2.1}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)\pm 0.1\left(\mathrm{lumi}\right)$ pb. Their ratio is measured to be ${\mathcal{R}}_{\mathrm{t}-\mathrm{ch}}={2.7}_{-0.8}^{+1.5}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.3}^{+1.2}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right)$. The absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element is found to be |f LV V tb | = 0.92 ± 0.09(exp) ± 0.01(theo). The measurements are in good agreement with the standard model predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Search for a vector-like quark T' → tH via the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the electroweak production of a vector-like quark T', decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{–1}$. This is the first T' search that exploits the Higgs boson decay to a pair of photons. For narrow isospin singlet T' states with masses up to 1.1 TeV, the excellent diphoton invariant mass resolution of 1–2% results in an increased sensitivity compared to previous searches based on the same production mechanism. The electroweak production of a T' quark with mass up to 960 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a coupling strength κ$_{T}$ = 0.25 and a relative decay width Γ/M$_{T'}$< 5%.

Probing bottom-associated production of a TeV scale scalar decaying to a top quark and dark matter at the LHC

Abstract A minimal non-thermal dark matter model that can explain both the existence of dark matter and the baryon asymmetry in the universe is studied. It requires two color-triplet, iso-singlet scalars with$$ \mathcal{O}\left(\textrm{TeV}\right) $$ O TeV masses and a singlet Majorana fermion with a mass of$$ \mathcal{O}\left(\textrm{GeV}\right) $$ O GeV . The fermion becomes stable and can play the role of the dark matter candidate. We consider the fermion to interact with a top quark via the exchange of QCD-charged scalar fields coupled dominantly to third generation fermions. The signature of a single top quark production associated with a bottom quark and large missing transverse momentum opens up the possibility to search for this type of model at the LHC in a way complementary to existing monotop searches.

Search for dark matter production in association with a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

A search for the production of a single top quark in association with invisible particles is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . In this search, a flavor-changing neutral current produces a single top quark or antiquark and an invisible state nonresonantly. The invisible state consists of a hypothetical spin-1 particle acting as a new mediator and decaying to two spin-1/2 dark matter candidates. The analysis searches for events in which the top quark or antiquark decays hadronically. No significant excess of events compatible with that signature is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the masses of the spin-1 mediator and the dark matter candidates, and are compared to constraints from the dark matter relic density measurements. In a vector (axial-vector) coupling scenario, masses of the spin-1 mediator are excluded up to 1.85 (1.85) TeV with an expectation of 2.0 (2.0) TeV, whereas masses of the dark matter candidates are excluded up to 0.75 (0.55) TeV with an expectation of 0.85 (0.65) TeV.

Search for pairs of scalar leptoquarks decaying into quarks and electrons or muons in $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

A search for new-physics resonances decaying into a lepton and a jet performed by the ATLAS experiment is presented. Scalar leptoquarks pair-produced in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider are considered using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1, corresponding to the full Run 2 dataset. They are searched for in events with two electrons or two muons and two or more jets, including jets identified as arising from the fragmentation of c- or b-quarks. The observed yield in each channel is consistent with the Standard Model background expectation. Leptoquarks with masses below 1.8 TeV and 1.7 TeV are excluded in the electron and muon channels, respectively, assuming a branching ratio into a charged lepton and a quark of 100%, with minimal dependence on the quark flavour. Upper limits on the aforementioned branching ratio are also given as a function of the leptoquark mass.

Search for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a single top quark, tH, is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The search targets Higgs-boson decays into $b\bar{b}$, WW * , ZZ * , and ττ, accompanied by an isolated lepton (electron or muon) from the top-quark decay. Multivariate techniques are employed to enhance the separation between signal and background processes. The observed signal strength, μ tH , defined as the ratio between the measured cross-section and the predicted Standard Model value, is μ tH = 8.1 ± 2.6 (stat.) ± 2.0 (syst.). The significance of the observed (expected) signal above the background-only expectation is 2.8 (0.4) standard deviations. The corresponding observed (expected) upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the tH cross-section is found to be 13.9 (6.1) times the value predicted by the Standard Model. An interpretation with an inverted sign of the top-quark Yukawa coupling is performed, and the signal strength and corresponding limit are reported.

Search for a cH signal in the associated production of at least one charm quark with a Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

This paper presents the first search for a cH signal sensitive to the coupling of the charm quark (c) to the Higgs boson (H) in the associated production of at least one charm quark with a Higgs boson decaying to two photons. The results are based on a data set of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . Assuming the standard model (SM) rates for all other Higgs boson production processes, the observed (expected) upper limit at 95% confidence level on the cH signal strength is 243 (355) times the SM prediction. Under the same assumption, the observed (expected) allowed interval on the Higgs boson to charm quark coupling modifier, κ c , is |κ c | < 38.1 (|κ c | < 72.5) at 95% confidence level.

Comparison of improved TMD and CGC frameworks in forward quark dijet production

For studying small- x gluon saturation in forward dijet production in high-energy dilute-dense collisions, the improved TMD (ITMD) factorization formula was recently proposed. In the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework, it represents the leading term of an expansion in inverse powers of the hard scale. It contains the leading-twist TMD factorization formula relevant for small gluon’s transverse momentum k t , but also incorporates an all-order resummation of kinematical twists, resulting in a proper matching to high-energy factorization at large k t . In this paper, we evaluate the accuracy of the ITMD formula quantitatively, for the case of quark dijet production in high-energy proton-proton( p + p ) and proton-nucleus ( p + A ) collisions at LHC energies. We do so by comparing the quark-antiquark azimuthal angle Δ ϕ distribution to that obtained with the CGC formula. For a dijet with each quark momentum p t much larger than the target saturation scale, Q s , the ITMD formula is a good approximation to the CGC formula in a wide range of azimuthal angle. It becomes less accurate as the jet p t ’s are lowered, as expected, due to the presence of genuine higher-twists contributions in the CGC framework, which represent multi-body scattering effects absent in the ITMD formula. We find that, as the hard jet momenta are lowered, the accuracy of ITMD start by deteriorating at small angles, in the high-energy-factorization regime, while in the TMD regime near Δ ϕ = π , very low values of p t are needed to see differences between the CGC and the ITMD formula. In addition, the genuine twists corrections to ITMD become visible for higher values of p t in p + A collisions, compared to p + p collisions, signaling that they are enhanced by the target saturation scale.

Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Two-loop electroweak corrections to the Top-Quark Contribution to ϵ K

The parameter ϵ K measures CP violation in the neutral kaon system. It is a sensitive probe of new physics and plays a prominent role in the global fit of the Cabibbo-Kobabyashi-Maskawa matrix. The perturbative theory uncertainty is currently dominated by the top-quark contribution. Here, we present the calculation of the full two-loop electroweak corrections to the top-quark contribution to ϵ K , including the resummation of QED-QCD logarithms. We discuss different renormalization prescriptions for the electroweak input parameters. In the traditional normalization of the weak Hamiltonian with two powers of the Fermi constant G F , the top-quark contribution is shifted by –1%.

Entanglement between valence and sea quarks in hadrons of 1+1 dimensional QCD

The conceptual interpretation of valence- and sea-quark separation, which is a key aspect of the parton model and of an intuitive picture of hadron structure, becomes obscured by quantum effects in QCD. This suggests that there may be measures of entanglement between quark degrees of freedom that are present in QCD, but absent in the intuitive picture with a clear valence-sea (VS) separation. In this paper, we define the first rigorous measure of VS entanglement in QCD in an attempt to bring conceptual clarity to this issue, and, potentially, to find a measure of the applicability of the parton model to QCD bound states. This VS entanglement vanishes in the large-N c limit, and it remains low when finite-N c states resemble their large-N c counterparts. We perform a numerical study of VS entanglement in 1 + 1 dimensional discrete light-cone quantized QCD, and in the process develop a method for building the color-singlet basis of 1 + 1d QCD that is manifestly complete and orthogonal by construction. We calculate this VS entanglement entropy for the first time and find that it is relatively low for the first few excited states of both mesons and baryons compared to all other states in the spectrum, with the VS entropy of ground state hadrons providing a minimum. We also see that for ground state mesons the entropy is well described in the 1/N c approximation. These results suggest that low energy hadrons may be the only QCD bound states for which the large-N c expansion, and perhaps the parton model, provide an accurate description. This work also provides the first evidence that the VS entanglement entropy of QCD in 3 + 1d, which would likely serve as an order parameter for the transition between quark and hadron degrees of freedom, may be perturbatively accessible through a large-N c expansion.

Matching the Standard Model to heavy-quark effective theory and nonrelativistic QCD

We find the leading electroweak corrections to the Lagrangians of heavy-quark effective theory and nonrelativistic QCD. These corrections appear in the Wilson coefficients of the two- and four-quark operators and are considered here at one-loop order through $\mathscr{O}(1/m^3)$ and $\mathscr{O}(1/m^2)$, respectively. The two-quark operators through this order include new parity violating terms, which we derive analogously to the parity preserving QCD result at one-loop order.

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays using dilepton events at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays is presented, using proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The measurement is performed selecting $t$$\overline{t}$ events decaying into final states with two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two b-tagged jets. The polarisation is extracted from the differential cross-section distribution of the cos$⁡θ$* variable, where $θ$* is the angle between the momentum direction of the charged lepton from the W boson decay and the reversed momentum direction of the b-quark from the top-quark decay, both calculated in the W boson rest frame. Parton-level results, corrected for the detector acceptance and resolution, are presented for the cos⁡θ* angle. The measured fractions of longitudinal, left- and right-handed polarisation states are found to be $f$ 0 = 0.684 ± 0.005 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), $f$ L = 0.318 ± 0.003 (stat.) ± 0.008 (syst.) and $f$ R = -0.002 ± 0.002 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Review of searches for vector-like quarks, vector-like leptons, and heavy neutral leptons in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV at the CMS experiment

The LHC has provided an unprecedented amount of proton–proton collision data, bringing forth exciting opportunities to address fundamental open questions in particle physics. These questions can potentially be answered by performing searches for very rare processes predicted by models that attempt to extend the standard model of particle physics. The data collected by the CMS experiment in 2015–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV can be used to test the standard model with high precision and potentially uncover evidence for new particles or interactions. An interesting possibility is the existence of new fermions with masses ranging from the MeV to the TeV scale. Such new particles appear in many possible extensions of the standard model and are well motivated theoretically. New fermions may explain the appearance of three generations of leptons and quarks, the mass hierarchy across these generations, and the nonzero neutrino masses. In this report, the results of searches targeting vectorlike quarks, vector-like leptons, and heavy neutral leptons at the CMS experiment are summarized. The complementarity of current searches for each type of new fermion is discussed, and combinations of several searches for vector-like quarks are presented. The discovery potential for some of these searches at the High-Luminosity LHC is also discussed.

End-to-End Jet Classification of Boosted Top Quarks with CMS Open Data

We describe a novel application of the end-to-end deep learning technique to the task of discriminating top quark-initiated jets from those originating from the hadronization of a light quark or a gluon. The end-to-end deep learning technique combines deep learning algorithms and low-level detector representation of the high-energy collision event. In this study, we use lowlevel detector information from the simulated CMS Open Data samples to construct the top jet classifiers. To optimize classifier performance we progressively add low-level information from the CMS tracking detector, including pixel detector reconstructed hits and impact parameters, and demonstrate the value of additional tracking information even when no new spatial structures are added. Relying only on calorimeter energy deposits and reconstructed pixel detector hits, the end-to-end classifier achieves a ROC-AUC score of 0.975±0.002 for the task of classifying boosted top quark jets. After adding derived track quantities, the classifier ROC-AUC score increases to 0.9824±0.0013, serving as the first performance benchmark for these CMS Open Data samples.
