Tuning the Adsorption Properties of Metal–Organic Frameworks through Coadsorbed Ammonia

In this study, we report a novel strategy to increase the gas adsorption selectivity of metal organic framework materials by coadsorbing another molecular species. Specifically, we find that addition of tightly bound NH 3 molecules in the well-known metal–organic framework MOF-74 dramatically alters its adsorption behavior of C 2 H 2 and C 2 H 4 . Combining in situ infrared spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we find that—as a result of coadsorbed NH 3 molecules attaching to the open metal sites—C 2 H 2 binds more strongly and diffuses much faster than C 2 H 4 , occupying the available space adjacent to metal-bound NH 3 molecules. Most remarkably, C 2 H 4 is now almost completely excluded from entering the MOF once C 2 H 2 has been loaded. This finding dispels the widespread belief that strongly coadsorbed species in nanoporous materials always undermine their performance in adsorbing or separating weakly bound target molecules. Furthermore, it suggests a new route to tune the adsorption behavior of MOF materials through harnessing the interactions among coadsorbed guests.

Ultrasound-Assisted Nonthermal, Nonequilibrium Separation of Organic Molecules from Their Binary Aqueous Solutions: Effect of Solute Properties on Separation

The separation of organic molecules in downstream processes, such as distillation, plays a vital role in biobased chemical production. A comprehensive study was performed here using ultrasonic energy to separate 11 organic molecules from their binary aqueous solutions under nonthermal, nonequilibrium, and phase-change free conditions. A batch sonoseparator with a three-stage mist collection unit allowed direct analysis of ultrasound-generated mist with an HPLC/GC and differentiation and quantification of the vapor and mist. The results showed that the alcohols (1-butanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and methanol) and acetone were enriched in the ultrasound-generated mist with enrichment ratios of 3.2–5. On the other hand, ethylene glycol, glycerol, γ-valerolactone (GVL), glucose, and sucrose were diluted with dilution ratios in the range of 2.04–15.7 in the mist and vapor generated by ultrasound (or concentrated in the bulk solution). No enrichment nor dilution of acetic acid was observed. The role of various physicochemical parameters such as dynamic viscosity, surface tension, Henry’s law of solubility constant, vapor pressure, and octanol–water partition coefficient in the enrichment was examined. Furthermore, the hydrophobicity of the organic molecules represented by the octanol–water partition coefficient was found to play a crucial role in determining the separation characteristics of the molecules in ultrasound-generated mist and vapor.

Anisotropic magnetic and transport properties of orthorhombic o-Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

Abstract The crystal structure, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetic and resistivity measurements are reported for Sn flux grown single crystals of orthorhombic Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 (U 2 Co 3 Si 5 -type, Ibam ). Our findings show that o -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 hosts nearly trivalent Pr ions, as evidenced by EELS and fits to temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements. Complex magnetic ordering with a partially spin-polarized state emerges near T sp = 32 K, with a spin reconfiguration transition near T M = 15 K. Heat capacity measurements show that the phase transitions appear as broad peaks in the vicinity of T sp and T M . The magnetic entropy further reveals that crystal electric field splitting lifts the Hund’s rule degeneracy at low temperatures. Taken together, these measurements show that Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 is an environment for complex f state magnetism with potential strongly correlated electron states.
