Characterization of BCL strain gages for use to 1366 K (2000 F)

Strain gage behavior under static and transient heating conditions at various strain rates and high temperatures (1366 K(2000 F) was studied. Optimum time-temperature parameters were developed for preconditioning (prestabilizing) the gages. A limited study was carried out to determine the extent of spalling of platinum cladding during fabrication of platinum-clad wire strain gages. Further verification was also carried out on the convergence and repeatability of the apparent strain characteristics of the gage under heating and cooling cycles. The significance of these characteristics from the standpoint of enhancing measurement accuracy is also discussed. It was concluded that the gage should perform satisfactorily to temperatures approaching 1366 K (2000 F).

Experiment M131. Human vestibular function

The lower susceptibility to vestibular stimulation aloft, compared with that on ground under experimental conditions, is attributed to a precondition, namely, either there is no need to adapt, or, as exemplified by the Skylab 3 pilot, adaptation to weightlessness is achieved. Findings in some of the astronauts emphasize the distinction between two categories of vestibular side effects: immediate reflex phenomena (illusions, sensations of turning, etc.), and delayed epiphenomena that include the constellation of symptoms and syndromes comprising motion sickness. The drug combinations 1-scopolamine and d-amphetamine and promethazine hydrochloride and ephedrine sulfate are effective in prevention and treatment of motion sickness. It is concluded that prevention of motion sickness in any stressful motion environment involves selection, adaptation, and the use of drugs.

Elasticity of excised dog lung parenchyma

An optical-electromechanical system is used to measure the force-deformation behavior of biaxially loaded rectangular slabs of excised dog lung parenchyma. In the course of the study, the effects of time, the consistency of reference lengths and areas, the presence of hysteresis, the necessity of preconditioning, the repeatability of results, the effects of lateral load, the effect of strain rate, the effect of pH, the influence of temperature, and the variations among specimens are considered. A new finding is that there is a change in elastic behavior when the tissue undergoes a compressive strain. When the tissue is in tension, increasing the lateral load decreases the compliance, whereas the opposite is true when compressive strain is present.

Strain rate, temperature, and humidity on strength and moduli of a graphite/epoxy composite

Results of an experimental study of the influence of strain rate, temperature and humidity on the mechanical behavior of a graphite/epoxy fiber composite are presented. Three principal strengths (longitudinal, transverse and shear) and four basic moduli (E1, E2, G12 and U12) of a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite were followed as a function of strain rate, temperature and humidity. Each test was performed at a constant tensile strain rate in an environmental chamber providing simultaneous temperature and humidity control. Prior to testing, specimens were given a moisture preconditioning treatment at 60 C. Values for the matrix dominated moduli and strength were significantly influenced by both environmental and rate parameters, whereas the fiber dominated moduli were not. However, the longitudinal strength was significantly influenced by temperature and moisture content. A qualitative explanation for these observations is presented.

Microwave observation of the Weddell polynya

Satellite microwave image data from Nimbus 5 of the Weddell Sea are examined for the years 1973-77. During the winters of 1974, 1975 and 1976 a polynya or ice-enclosed open water area is observed. It has an area 200,000-300,000 sq km and is observed drifting west at about 1 cm/s in the Weddell Sea ice pack. The long-term and short-term behavior of the polynya margin and the regional ice concentration are interpreted in light of several oceanographic and meteorological theories explaining the circulation relevant to its origin, stability and role. It is concluded that water column stability preconditioning alone is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the existence of the polynya.

Iterative algorithms for large sparse linear systems on parallel computers

Algorithms for assembling in parallel the sparse system of linear equations that result from finite difference or finite element discretizations of elliptic partial differential equations, such as those that arise in structural engineering are developed. Parallel linear stationary iterative algorithms and parallel preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms are developed for solving these systems. In addition, a model for comparing parallel algorithms on array architectures is developed and results of this model for the algorithms are given.

Mass loss parameters for typical Shuttle materials

The weight loss of twenty different typical Shuttle materials was measured with a thermogravimetric analyzer as the material temperature was increased from ambient to 300 C. An additional ten tests were performed where conditioning of the material varied. The materials were selected from each general grouping such as adhesives, coatings, lubricants, encapsulants, elastomers, and resins. Care was taken in the preparation, curing, and preconditioning of the materials to simulate flight use. Making the assumption that the weight loss follows first order rate theory, the source outgassing parameters for these thirty materials is presented.

Calculations of transonic potential flows by a parameter free procedure

A parameter-free computational procedure for transonic potential flows around an airfoil is presented. The method is based on an inexact, Newton-like iterative scheme, and a preconditioned minimal residual algorithm is used to solve the linear system of equations arising at each iterate. This iterative procedure is formulated so that the difficulties associated with the approximate factorization technique, namely the requirement of iteration parameters and the boundary conditions for the intermediate variable are eliminated. Numerical experiments are given for potential flows around NACA 0012 airfoil with different Mach numbers and different angles of attack. These results are then compared with those obtained by the approximate factorization techniques.

Newton like: Minimal residual methods applied to transonic flow calculations

A computational technique for the solution of the full potential equation is presented. The method consists of outer and inner iterations. The outer iterate is based on a Newton like algorithm, and a preconditioned Minimal Residual method is used to seek an approximate solution of the system of linear equations arising at each inner iterate. The present iterative scheme is formulated so that the uncertainties and difficulties associated with many iterative techniques, namely the requirements of acceleration parameters and the treatment of additional boundary conditions for the intermediate variables, are eliminated. Numerical experiments based on the new method for transonic potential flows around the NACA 0012 airfoil at different Mach numbers and different angles of attack are presented, and these results are compared with those obtained by the Approximate Factorization technique. Extention to three dimensional flow calculations and application in finite element methods for fluid dynamics problems by the present method are also discussed. The Inexact Newton like method produces a smoother reduction in the residual norm, and the number of supersonic points and circulations are rapidly established as the number of iterations is increased.

Simultaneous analysis and design

Optimization techniques are increasingly being used for performing nonlinear structural analysis. The development of element by element (EBE) preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) techniques is expected to extend this trend to linear analysis. Under these circumstances the structural design problem can be viewed as a nested optimization problem. There are computational benefits to treating this nested problem as a large single optimization problem. The response variables (such as displacements) and the structural parameters are all treated as design variables in a unified formulation which performs simultaneously the design and analysis. Two examples are used for demonstration. A seventy-two bar truss is optimized subject to linear stress constraints and a wing box structure is optimized subject to nonlinear collapse constraints. Both examples show substantial computational savings with the unified approach as compared to the traditional nested approach.

A spectral collocation method for the Navier-Stokes equations

A Fourier-Chebyshev spectral method for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is described. It is applicable to a variety of problems including some with fluid properties which vary strongly both in the normal direction and in time. In this fully spectral algorithm, a preconditioned iterative technique is used for solving the implicit equations arising from semi-implicit treatment of pressure, mean advection and vertical diffusion terms. The algorithm is tested by applying it to hydrodynamic stability problems in channel flow and in external boundary layers with both constant and variable viscosity.

System prevents motion sickness, often experienced during early part of orbital flight. Also helps prevent seasickness and other forms of terrestrial motion sickness, often experienced during early part of orbital flight. Training affects subject's perception of inner-ear signals, visual signals, and kinesthetic motion perception. Changed perception resembles that of astronauts who spent many days in space and adapted to weightlessness.

The numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation for wave propagation problems in underwater acoustics

The Helmholtz Equation (-delta-K(2)n(2))u=0 with a variable index of refraction, n, and a suitable radiation condition at infinity serves as a model for a wide variety of wave propagation problems. A numerical algorithm was developed and a computer code implemented that can effectively solve this equation in the intermediate frequency range. The equation is discretized using the finite element method, thus allowing for the modeling of complicated geometrices (including interfaces) and complicated boundary conditions. A global radiation boundary condition is imposed at the far field boundary that is exact for an arbitrary number of propagating modes. The resulting large, non-selfadjoint system of linear equations with indefinite symmetric part is solved using the preconditioned conjugate gradient method applied to the normal equations. A new preconditioner is developed based on the multigrid method. This preconditioner is vectorizable and is extremely effective over a wide range of frequencies provided the number of grid levels is reduced for large frequencies. A heuristic argument is given that indicates the superior convergence properties of this preconditioner.
