Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 2: ss_object dataset type

We present Rubin Data Preview 2 (DP2), the second data preview from the NDF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. Data Preview 2 (DP2) comprises coadds, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products; and when fully released will also include single-epoch images and difference images. DP2 is derived from observations acquired by the LSST Science Camera (LSSTCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile, primarily during the on-sky commissioning campaign between 2025-04-16 and 2025-09-21, supplemented by observations taken between 2025-10-25 and 2026-01-06 that overlap the commissioning footprint. The DP2 footprint comprises the Science Validation wide-area survey, five Deep Drilling Fields, and a number of targeted small-field regions, including Trifid and Lagoon, Prawn, M49, and New Horizons, all observed as part of the Rubin First Look campaign. Each field was imaged in up to six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, and coadded to produce deep imaging covering an estimated 3,000 deg2. The addition of single-visit-only areas expands the total DP2 footprint to an estimated 15,000 deg2, with coverage in at least one filter. The median per-visit PSF FWHM across the wide-area survey ranges from 1.17 arcsec in the z band to 1.26 arcsec in g and r bands. The deepest field, reaches estimated coadded 5σ depths of u=26 mag, g=26.8 mag, r=26.3 mag, i=26.1 mag, z=25.3 mag, y=23.9 mag. Based on a roughly five-month primary observing baseline and covering only part of the eventual LSST footprint, DP2's area, depth, and multiband coverage nonetheless support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of LSST Data Release This dataset is a subset of the full data release consisting of the ss_object dataset type. These are derived parameters for moving objects. This release contains 1 dataset of this type.

The development of a sonic boom simulator with detonable gases

A sonic boom pressure profile was simulated in the far-field by detonation of a methane-oxygen mixture contained in a slender, shaped Mylar envelope. Ideal N-waves were synthesized with peak overpressures from two to five psf and durations of 30 to 75 milliseconds. The detonation of the gas mixture was initiated by a single Primacord strand running the length of balloon. The N-wave producing balloon was synthesized as a composite structure, utilizing experimental pressure profiles obtained from the detonations of slender, axisymmetric balloons with elementary, non-cylindrical shapes.

Space shuttle: Static aerodynamic characteristics of the MSC-040A the Msc-040A space shuttle orbiter with wedge centerline vertical and twin vertical tails at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 4.96

The results are presented from experimental aerodynamic investigations conducted on a 0.6-percent scale model of the MSC-040 space shuttle orbiter in a 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel. The purpose of the test program was to define the stability, control, and performance characteristics of the baseline MSC-040A orbiter configuration with proposed alternate wing pods, with several vertical tail configurations with and without flared rudders, and with upper wing surface flap deflections. Force and moment data and model base and balance cavity pressure data were obtained for a Mach range of 0.60 through 4.96 and dynamic pressure range of 465 through 1580 psf. Model attitude was varied from 0 to +34 degrees angle of attack at zero sideslip and -4 to +10 degrees angle of sideslip at 0, 10, 20, and 24 degrees angle of attack.

Effects of aircraft noises on the sleep of women

The electroencephalographic and behavioral responses during sleep of eight women subjects, aged 29 to 49 years, to subsonic jet flyover noise and simulated sonic booms were tested over 14 consecutive nights. Stimulus intensities were 101, 113, and 119 PNdB (as if measured out-of-doors) for the subsonic jet flyover and 0.67, 2.50, and 5.0 psf (as if measured out-of-doors) for the simulated sonic booms. It was found that the women were awakened, on the average, by approximately 42 percent of the flyover noises and by approximately 15 percent of the simulated sonic booms. Comparison of the results of this study with those of a similar study using men as subjects revealed that women were awakened more frequently by the subsonic jet flyover noise then were the men, while men were awakened more frequently by the simulated sonic boom.

Prospects for low wing-loading STOL transports with ride smoothing.

Airplanes with low wing-loadings provide STOL capability without reliance on auxiliary propulsion or augmented lift, but require a ride smoothing control system to provide acceptable passenger comfort. A parametric study produced a configuration having a .35 thrust-to-weight ratio and a 50 psf wing loading, and which satisfied specified mission requirements and airworthiness standards. A ride-smoothing control system (RCS) synthesis was then performed which consisted of ride quality criteria definition, RCS concept trades, and analysis of RCS performance benefits at significant flight conditions. Within the limitations of the study it is concluded that this is a viable approach to STOL airplane design.

Space shuttle: Longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of low aspect ratio wing configurations in ground effect for a moving and stationary ground surface

A 0.05-scale model of the NASA-MSC Orbiter 040A Configuration was tested. Test duration was approximately 80 hours during which the model was tested in and out of ground effect with a stationary and moving ground belt. Model height from ground plane surface was varied from one and one-half wing span to landing touchdown while angle of attack varied from -4 to 20 degrees. Eleven effectiveness and alternate configuration geometries were tested to insure complete analysis of low aspect ratio wing aircraft in the presence of ground effect. Test Mach number was approximately 0.067 with a corresponding dynamic pressure value of 6.5 psf.

Qualification flight tests of the Viking decelerator system.

The Balloon Launched Decelerator Test (BLDT) series conducted at White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) during July and August of 1972 flight qualified the NASA Viking '75 decelerator system at conditions bracketing those expected for Mars. This paper discusses the decelerator system design requiremnts, compares the test results with prior work, and discusses significant considerations leading to successful qualification in earth's atmosphere. The Viking decelerator system consists of a single-stage mortar-deployed 53-foot nominal diameter disk-gap-band parachute. Full-scale parachutes were deployed behind a full-scale simulated Viking vehicle at Mach numbers from 0.47 to 2.18 and dynamic pressures from 6.9 to 14.6 psf. Analyses show that the system is qualified with sufficient margin to perform successfully for the Viking mission.

Balloon launched Viking decelerator test program

Four BLDT flights were conducted during the summer of 1972. The purpose of these tests was to qualify the Viking parachute system behind the full-scale Viking entry vehicle over the maximum range of entry conditions anticipated in the Viking '75 soft landing on Mars. A summary of the test series is presented. Test conditions ranged from a Mach number of 2.0 to 0.5 and dynamic pressure from 11.7 to 4.4 psf. This range of conditions covers the uncertainty in entry conditions at Mars due to atmospheric and entry performance uncertainties. Emphasis is placed on parachute performance and simulated Mars entry vehicle motions as influenced by the parachute performance. Conclusions are presented regarding the ability of the parachute to perform within the operational parameters required for a successful soft Martian landing. A list of references which covers all reports in the qualification test program is included.
