Moments of nucleon unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions from lattice QCD at the physical point

The second Mellin moments ⟨ x ⟩ of the nucleon’s unpolarized, polarized, and transversity parton distribution functions are computed. Two lattice QCD ensembles at the physical pion mass are used: these were generated using a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action and 2 + 1 flavor tree-level improved Wilson Clover fermions coupling via 2-level HEX-smearing. The moments are extracted from forward matrix elements of local leading twist operators. We determine renomalization factors in RI-(S)MOM and match to MS ¯ at scale 2 GeV. Our findings show that operators that exhibit vanishing kinematics at zero momentum can have significantly reduced excited-state contamination. The resulting polarized moment is used to quantify the longitudinal contribution to the quark spin-orbit correlation. All our results agree within two sigma with previous lattice results. Accessing the gravitational form factors of the nucleon and nuclei through a massive graviton

In contrast to the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and nuclei that have been extensively studied in electron scattering, there is no known way to directly measure the gravitational form factors (GFFs), the off-forward hadronic matrix element of the QCD energy-momentum tensor. I suggest exploring the possibility to access the GFFs of the proton and nuclei in conjunction with massive graviton searches at future TeV-scale lepton-ion colliders. Nonlocal nucleon matrix elements in the rest frame

Extracting parton structure from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations requires studying the coordinate scale 𝑧 3 dependence of the matrix elements of bilocal operators. The most significant contribution comes from the 𝑧 3 dependence induced by ultraviolet (UV) renormalization of the Wilson line. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading order perturbative calculations of the renormalization factor can describe, to a few percent accuracy, the logarithm of the lattice QCD rest frame matrix elements with separations up to distances of 0.6 fm on multiple lattice spacings. The residual discrepancies can be modeled by a leading effect from the structure of the nucleon.

Measurement of the inelasticity distribution of neutrino-nucleon interactions for 80 GeV

We report a study of the inelasticity distribution in the scattering of neutrinos of energy 80–560 GeV off nucleons. Using atmospheric muon neutrinos detected in IceCube’s sub-array DeepCore during 2012–2021, we fit the observed inelasticity in the data to a parameterized expectation and extract the values that describe it best. Finally, we compare the results to predictions from various combinations of perturbative QCD calculations and atmospheric neutrino flux models.

Constraints on Covariant Dark-Matter–Nucleon Effective Field Theory Interactions from the First Science Run of the LUX-ZEPLIN Experiment

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment is a dual-phase xenon time project chamber operating in the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota, USA. We report on the results of a relativistic extension to the nonrelativistic effective field theory (NREFT) from a 5.5 t fiducial mass and 60 live days of exposure. We present constraints on couplings from covariant interactions arising from the coupling of vector, axial currents, and electric dipole moments of the nucleon to the magnetic and electric dipole moments of the weakly interacting massive particle which cannot be described by recasting previous results described by an NREFT. Using a profile-likelihood ratio analysis, in an energy region between 0 keV nr to 270 keV nr , we report 90% confidence level exclusion limits on the coupling strength of five interactions in both the isoscalar and isovector bases. Polarization of the 𝜙 meson in the hadronic phase with nucleon scatterings and a viscous hydrodynamic background

We extend our previous work on the spin alignment of the ϕ vector meson in the hadronic phase of the quark gluon plasma, by including effects of nucleon scatterings. The emission rates are calculated in a realistic hydrodynamic background simulated with the code FLUIDuM , for different beam energies. We find that all the effects taken into account cannot explain the out-of-plane spin alignment of the ϕ meson observed experimentally.

Pion-nucleon scattering in baryon chiral perturbation theory combined with the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion

This work implements the combined baryon chiral perturbation theory (BChPT) and 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansions for pion-nucleon elastic scattering. The effective theory is based on the baryon sector dynamical spin-flavor 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(4) symmetry emergent in the large 𝑁 𝑐 limit, whose breaking is controlled by the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion. The noncommutativity of the chiral and 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansions in unitarity corrections (loops) requires a linking of both expansions. As it was shown in the case of baryon masses and currents, the natural linking is the 𝜉 expansion, in which 𝒪⁡(𝑝) = 𝒪⁡(1/𝑁 𝑐 ) = 𝒪⁡(𝜉). The spin-flavor symmetry requires that the ground state baryons span an 𝑆⁢𝑈⁡(4) symmetric irreducible representation which implies that in particular 𝑁 and Δ are active degrees of freedom in the effective theory. The scattering amplitude is expanded to the next-to-next-to leading order in the 𝜉 expansion, corresponding to the one-loop contributions with the leading-order Lagrangian. The results are given for generic 𝑁 𝑐 in order to demonstrate the consistency of the framework. The spin-flavor symmetry plays a central role in maintaining the consistency of the effective theory with respect to the 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion. This consistency manifests itself in an improvement in the convergence of the low energy expansion with respect to the case of the ordinary BChPT without an explicit dynamical Δ, which is known to be inconsistent with the constraints of 𝑁 𝑐 scaling. Fits to the 𝜋⁢𝑁 → 𝜋⁢𝑁, 𝑆, 𝑃, and 𝐷 partial wave amplitudes from the SAID data base are finally used to test the framework and to determine the energy range of its applicability.

Nucleon-induced inelastic scattering with statistical strength functions and the ECIS direct reaction code

Modern theoretical descriptions of inelastic scattering make use of multi-step direct reaction approaches together with transition potentials obtained from sophisticated nuclear structure models. Here we demonstrate how the complexity of such calculations can be reduced to permit simpler ones, also using the ECIS code, but providing an almost equally precise alternative to a much more detailed calculation. We have studied the transition form factors within the random phase approximation (RPA), where these are obtained as linear combinations of particle–hole states. At moderate to high excitation energies, where interference effects tend to disappear, we have proposed an independent particle–hole formalism in which particle–hole states are spread in energy with an appropriate strength function obtained from the RPA. The effects of more complex modes, such as 2p–2h ones, are simulated with widths calculated in a semi-classical context. In this work, we verify the validity of our approximations for pre-equilibrium proton-induced reactions on 90 Zr target. Our calculations provide a good description of the reaction data and point toward a simplification of the description of nucleon-induced reactions based on averages of microscopic details of the projectile–target interaction.

The Jefferson Lab tritium program of nucleon and nuclear structure measurements

In this work a series of experiments were performed in Hall A of Jefferson Lab in 2018 that used a novel tritium and helium-3 target system. These experiments took advantage of the isospin symmetry of these mirror nuclei to make precise measurements of isospin dependence in both nucleon and nuclear structure. We summarize here the design and properties of these cells, the physics measurements that have been published, and results currently under analysis from this program.

Pion electroproduction measurements in the nucleon resonance region

Here, we report new pion electroproduction measurements in the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance, utilizing the SHMS - HMS magnetic spectrometers of Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The data focus on a region that exhibits a strong and rapidly changing interplay of the mesonic cloud and quark-gluon dynamics in the nucleon. The results are in reasonable agreement with models that employ pion cloud effects and chiral effective field theory calculations, but at the same time they suggest that an improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements. The data illustrate the potential of the magnetic spectrometers setup in Hall C towards the study the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance. These first reported results will be followed by a series of measurements in Hall C, that will expand the studies of the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance offering a high precision insight within a wide kinematic range from low to high momentum transfers.

Hot spot model of nucleon and double parton scattering

We calculate the rate of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton-proton collisions in the framework of the recently proposed hot spot model of the nucleon structure. The resulting rate, especially for the case of three hot spots, is compared with the current experimental data on DPS at the LHC.

SD-pair shell model: Vibrational and rotational limits in the interacting boson–fermion model for like-nucleon system

Typical features of the Bose–Fermi symmetries associated with [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] limits in the interacting boson model are described in the SD-pair shell model (SDPSM) framework for like-nucleon system. It is found that the limiting spectra associated with [Formula: see text] (vibrational) and [Formula: see text] (rotational) in the interacting boson–fermion model can be well reproduced in the SDPSM framework. It is shown that coupling of collective degree of freedom with the single-particle degree of freedom in the pairing interaction almost has no effect on the spectrum of odd-A system comparing to the adjacent even–even system, while the coupling of the collective degree of freedom with the single-particle degree of freedom in the quadrupole–quadrupole interaction results in the level splitting of several excited levels.

Nucleon and pion PDFs: large-x asymptotics meets functional mimicry

We review strategies to unveil the primordial large- x x structure of the nucleons as well as the pion from hard-scattering experiments. Ideas are presented for learning about the x\to 1 x → 1 limit of nonperturbative QCD dynamics at energy scales of order 1 GeV from collider experiments at much higher scales. The behavior of parton distributions at x\to 1 x → 1 predicted by the quark counting rules and other low-energy theoretical approaches is contrasted with phenomenological PDFs. Polynomial mimicry of PDF parametrizations is one of many factors that influence the apparent power of the (1-x) ( 1 − x ) falloff. We discuss implications of the mimicry for the large- x x falloff of the pion PDFs.

Nucleon valence quark distribution functions from Lattice QCD

We present results on the nucleon valence quark distribution extracted from Lattice QCD simulations, using a gauge ensemble of Nf=2+1 Wilson-Clover fermions with a pion mass of m?=350 MeV and lattice spacing of a=0.091 fm. We obtain reduced Ioffe Time Distributions (rITDs) by computing appropriate matrix elements on the lattice, and elaborate on the extraction of the desired quark distributions from the rITDs following the pseudo-PDF approach. A set of techniques are considered in order to ensure ground state dominance. Theoretical and experimental implications of our calculation are discussed.

Nucleon-Pion Spectroscopy from Sparsened Correlators

Neutrino oscillation experiments require accurate reconstructions of neutrino energies, which depend in part on a theoretical understanding of the axial $N\rightarrow\Delta$ transition form factors. A lattice QCD study of this transition will require construction of all hadronic states with energies up to $m_\Delta$, which at the physical point includes $N\pi$ and $N\pi\pi$. Building interpolating operators from sparse grids at the source and sink is a versatile method that allows construction of a wide range of diagram topologies and has successfully been used in other multi-hadron calculations. We will discuss application of this method to nucleon-pion systems and present preliminary results.
