A rapid, precise, reciprocating-movement color filter system

Unit was designed for moving color filters in and out of position in less than 46 ms. System may be used to record previously derived colors on photorecorder or to scan different color or wavelength components of rapidly passing scene, as in aerial reconnaissance. Rapid, precise reciprocating movement may be useful in purely mechanical and chemical applications.

Movement of the Surveyor 3 spacecraft

It was concluded that the Surveyor 3 spacecraft moved, probably as a result of a sudden failure of the leg 3 shock absorber, between May 1967 and November 1969. The time at which the movement occurred can be estimated only from comparison of the shielded and unshielded portions of footpad 3 and a knowledge of the mechanism and rate of the process that tans the painted surface.

Impaired motion detection preceding smooth eye movements.

Experiments have been carried out that suggest that the observed psychophysical impairment of motion detection in man may not occur equally over the entire visual field. Instead, if impaired motion detection is a consequence of redirection of 'attention' to another portion of the visual field, then movement detection may be impaired the most in the fovea and the least in the region of the subsequent target.

A bibliography of wildlife movements and tracking systems

A bibliography is presented consisting of 1,005 references concerned with animal orientation, homing, navigation, migration, and home range movements, and the various methods of tracking and monitoring such behavior through biotelemetry, radar, and various banding and tagging techniques. A majority of the publications appeared between 1950 and 1970, although the most intensive search was made of the 1965-1970 period. A small number of older articles and books were included because they appeared to have some special or unusual value. The references have been organized in two ways. First, they are grouped in primary categories on the basis of the behavior involved such as orientation, homing, etc., and the methods of tracking. Second, within each of the resulting major areas, the items are arranged in terms of the species of animal. This sequence is maintained throughout the bibliography and in many cases represents a rank order according to the number of publications found.

A study of morphology, provenance, and movement of desert sand seas in Africa, Asia, and Australia

The author has identified the following significant results. The most significant result to date is recongition that complexes are indeed visible on ERTS-1 images, and that the extent and nature of dune fields in many remote areas of the world can, for the first time, be observed almost simultaneously and directly compared. The primary scientific problem is to determine accurately the relationships among certain patterns, trends, and boundaries clearly revealed on ERTS-1 imagery to true surface configurations of desert landforms, and further, to relate the defined features to controlling factors such as wind direction and intensity, moisture in the air and on the ground and barriers to sand movement. It is hoped to produce, by photographic and cartographic extraction from ERTS-1 images, a set of thematic maps that will illustrate the relationships of optical appearance of various materials and effects of the color of various sand bodies upon ERTS-1 images.

Distribution and movement of suspended sediment in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast

ERTS-1 imagery has proven very useful in studies of the distribution of suspended sediment in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast. Moreover, by using suspended matter concentrations as tags on water masses, much information on water movement can be obtained. The utility of suspended sediment as a tracer is dependent on the sediment remaining in suspension long enough to travel an appreciable distance or to be visible on successive images. Although the evidence is not conclusive, it seems likely that much of the suspended sediment in Gulf of Mexico nearshore waters during normal seastate conditions has remained in suspension since the time of its entry into the Gulf of Mexico through rivers and tidal inlets.

Echo movement and evolution from real-time processing.

Preliminary experimental data on the effectiveness of conventional radars in measuring the movement and evolution of meteorological echoes when the radar is connected to a programmable real-time processor are examined. In the processor programming is accomplished by conceiving abstract machines which constitute the actual programs used in the methods employed. An analysis of these methods, such as the center of gravity method, the contour-displacement method, the method of slope, the cross-section method, the contour crosscorrelation method, the method of echo evolution at each point, and three-dimensional measurements, shows that the motions deduced from them may differ notably (since each method determines different quantities) but the plurality of measurement may give additional information on the characteristics of the precipitation.

The effects of simultaneous but unequal response-independent pay to pairs of human subjects on masseter EMG and bodily movements

Electromyographic activity and bodily movement of the masseter muscle were recorded in three pairs of human subjects, where one member of each pair was systematically presented with greater pay and each could reduce the value of money received by the other. The number of biting responses was as high or higher for the subject receiving less money immediately after coin delivery. However, the number of masseter contractions for the subject receiving more money remained higher at other times during the unequal pay conditions. No responses of pay reduction were emitted by any subject toward another.

Analysis of thermal stresses and metal movement during welding

The research is reported concerning the development of a system of mathematical solutions and computer programs for one- and two-dimensional analyses for thermal stresses. Reports presented include: the investigation of thermal stress and buckling of tantalum and columbium sheet; and analysis of two dimensional thermal strains and metal movement during welding.

Applications of PTTI to new techniques for determining crustal movements, polar motion, and the rotation of the earth

New extra-terrestrial techniques are discussed for geodesy and geodynamics include laser range measurements to the moon or to artificial satellites, Doppler measurements with the Transit satellite system, and both independent-clock and linked-antenna microwave interferometry. The ways in which PTTI measurements are used in these techniques will be reviewed, and the accuracies expected during the latter half of the 1970's will be discussed. At least 3 of the techniques appear capable of giving accuracies of 5 cm or better in each coordinate for many points on the earth's surface, and comparable accuracies for the earth's rotation and polar motion. For fixed stations or for sites a few hundred km apart, baseline lengths accurate to 1 cm may be achieved. Ways in which the complementary aspects of the different techniques can be exploited will be discussed, as well as how they tie in with improved ground techniques for determining crustal movements. Some recent results from the extra-terrestrial methods will be mentioned.

Role of stretch reflex in voluntary movements

The stretch reflex is often described as a spinal servomechanism, a device for assisting in the regulation of muscle length. Observation of the EMG response to mechanical interruption of voluntary movements fails to demonstrate a significant role for spinal reflexes at 40 msec latency. Two functional responses with latencies of 120 msec and 200 msec, implying supraspinal mediation, are observed.

Distribution, movement, and evolution of the volatile elements in the lunar regolith

The abundances and distributions of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur in lunar soils are reviewed. Carbon and nitrogen have a predominantly extra-lunar origin in lunar soils and breccias, while sulfur is mostly indigeneous to the moon. The lunar processes which effect the movement, distribution, and evolution of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, along with the volatile alkali elements sodium, potassium, and rubidium during regolith processes are discussed. Possible mechanisms which may result in the addition to or loss from the moon of these volatile elements are considered.

Circadian rhythm of leaf movement in Capsicum annuum observed during centrifugation

Plant circadian rhythms of leaf movement in seedlings of the pepper plant (Capsicum annuum L., var. Yolo Wonder) were observed at different g-levels by means of a centrifuge. Except for the chronically imposed g-force all environmental conditions to which the plants were exposed were held constant. The circadian period, rate of change of amplitude of successive oscillations, symmetry of the cycles, and phase of the rhythm all were found not to be significantly correlated with the magnitude of the sustained g-force.

Analysis of thermal stresses and metal movement during welding

Finite element computer programs were developed to determine thermal stresses and metal movement during butt welding of flat plates and bead-on-plate welding along the girth of a cylindrical shell. Circular cylindrical shells of 6061 aluminum alloy were used for the tests. Measurements were made of changes in temperature and thermal strains during the welding process.
