2D Polyhedral Template Matching for Atomic Resolution Microscopy

SAND2024-13879O The 2D Polyhedral Template Matching for Atomic Resolution Microscopy is a suite of functions for analyzing atomic resolution electron microscopy images using the 2D polyhedral template matching (2D-PTM) method. This software analyzes atomic resolution microscopy data from electron microscopic imaging or scanning probe microscopies. The primary application is for identifying different crystal phases, crystal orientations, and defect structures obtained in such atomic resolution images. Written in MATLAB and starting from an atomic resolution image, the code identifies the positions of atomic intensity peaks. It then matches predefined structural templates to the local atomic environments. Outputs include the local structural identification, the template scaling factor and rotation angle, root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD), and centrosymmetry parameter.

Effective sensor location for detection of change in structural dynamic response

This paper investigates the sensitivity of structural system response to the sensor location by investigating consequences of small changes in the location to the structural system response. The paper discusses how maximum observability (based on mode shape and the participation of that mode in the input provided) drives optimal location. The structural responses were investigated in terms of the g-rms response for various low-frequency inputs (pure sinusoids and real-life inputs such as an earthquake and trains). Results were then analyzed in the context of Modal Contributions Factors (MCF) and changes to the Force-to-response Transfer Functions (TRFs). A modal-matching process is first presented using a Matlab TM -based Finite Element Method (FEM) model of a cantilever beam and instrumentation to determine the location of a small mass based on three different criteria. Subsequently, the structural response is investigated using experiments and the FEM model. The accelerometer of small mass (at 1/3 height) was moved up or down to obtain changes in the structural response (TRF) to various realistic low-frequency inputs. Modal Contribution Factor (MCF) and derivative (slope) of the associated mode-shapes were correlated to the observed changes in TRFs. Results show how optimal sensor locations for detecting change in structural response can be based on the MCFs and the associated mode-shapes.

SoyFACE Fumigation Data Files

This data set is related to the SoyFACE experiments, which are open-air agricultural climate change experiments that have been conducted since 2001. The fumigation experiments take place at the SoyFACE farm and facility in Champaign County, Illinois during the growing season of each year, typically between June and October. - The "SoyFACE Plot Information 2001 to 2021" file contains information about each year of the SoyFACE experiments, including the fumigation treatment type (CO2, O3, or a combination treatment), the crop species, the plots (also referred to as 'rings' and labeled with numbers between 2 and 31) used in each experiment, important experiment dates, and the target concentration levels or 'setpoints' for CO2 and O3 in each experiment. - This data set includes files with minute readings of the fumigation levels ( "SoyFACE 1-Minute Fumigation Data Files" folder) from the SoyFACE experiments. The "Soyface 1-Minute Fumigation Data Files" folder contains sub-folders for each year of the experiments, each of which contains sub-folders for each ring used in that year's experiments. This data set also includes hourly data files for the fumigation experiments ( "SoyFACE Hourly Fumigation Data Files" folder) created from the 1-minute files, and hourly ambient/weather data files for each year of the experiments ( "Hourly Weather and Ambient Data Files" folder). The ambient CO2 and O3 data are collected at SoyFACE, and the weather data are collected from the SURFRAD and WARM weather stations located near the SoyFACE farm. - The "Fumigation Target Percentages" file shows how much of the time the CO2 and O3 fumigation levels are within a 10 or 20 percent margin of the target levels when the fumigation system is turned on. - The "Matlab Files" folder contains custom code (Aspray, E.K.) that was used to clean the "SoyFACE 1-Minute Fumigation Data" files and to generate the "SoyFACE Hourly Fumigation Data" and "Fumigation Target Percentages" files. Code information can be found in the "SoyFACE Hourly Fumigation Data Explanation" file. - Finally, the " * Explanation" files contain information about the column names, units of measurement, and other pertinent information for each data file. * NOTE: We have identified some files in the “SoyFACE 1-Minute Fumigation Data Files” folder in our SoyFACE data set submission that were not downloaded properly - the files were present in the folder, but the actual files were empty. V3 ensures that there are no longer any empty files in the data set.

Development of a point kinetics subroutine for Molten Salt reactors in RELAP5-3D

RELAP5-3D has historically focused on accurate modeling of design-basis and beyond-design-basis accidents in solid fuel light-water reactors. The assumption used in solid fuel reactors that delayed neutron precursors remain at the location in which they were produced is inherently incorrect for a molten salt reactor with flowing fuel. Therefore, new methods for modeling MSR kinetics were required. Subroutine used in RELAP5-3D were updated to analyze point kinetics in a molten salt reactor during both steady state and transient analyses. The phenomena related to MSR kinetics that were added to RELAP5-3D include arrays to store previous values for independent and dependent variables, arrays to add terms to existing kinetics equations, and a new reactivity bias term. A custom MATLAB assessment code was used to establish a suite of verification tests. This capability is undergoing final documentation and testing for public release with a future version of RELAP5-3D.

Coso Geothermal Spectral Library for Rocks and Minerals

An integrated open mineral spectral library designed to enhance the utility and precision of mineral spectral data for geothermal exploration, developed from a reliable and comprehensive digital dataset for seamless sharing by integrating field data, the USGS spectral library, and pertinent information obtained from Coso geothermal field (Coso) in California. The ASD FieldSpec portable spectrometer was utilized for collecting spectral data, which was subsequently analyzed using the THOR Material Identification tool in ENVI, The Spectral Geologist (TSG) software by CSIRO, and the Fully Constrained Linear Spectral Unmixing algorithm (FCLSU) in MATLAB. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with a mineralogy-analyzing function was employed to assess the mineral composition of samples, ensuring precise mineralogical analysis. A portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometer was also utilized to gather information on elemental enrichment. A framework for developing spectra data and establishing spectral libraries for various geological cases was proposed within this study. The characteristic spectra of six alteration minerals - alunite, chalcedony, epidote, hematite, kaolinite, and opal - were acquired from Coso samples. The spectral library for the Coso alteration minerals was introduced for further application in academic study or industrial exploration. To browse the Coso Geothermal Spectral data and related figures from spreadsheets: #1 Unzip and store the following items in the same folder. 'Contact Probe Data.zip', 'Sample Photos.zip', and 'Coso spectra of higher-certainity minerals.xlsx'. #2 Open 'Coso spectra of higher-certainity minerals.xlsx'. The hyperlinks in the spreadsheet lead to the folders or figures of: spectra .asd file, spectra ASC II file, spectra plots, and sample photos. The spectra data is raw data without splice correction. Spectra .asd files require particular software to open. (These cannot be opened in GIS software such as ArcGIS.) Spectra ASC II files can be opened in a text editor or spread sheet program.

Imperial Valley Dark Fiber Project Continuous DAS Data

The Imperial Valley Dark Fiber Project acquired Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) seismic data on a ~28 km segment of dark fiber between the cities of Calipatria and Imperial in the Imperial Valley, Southern California. Dark fiber refers to unused optical fiber cables in telecommunications networks and is repurposed in this project for DAS applications. The objective, which is further detailed in the attached journal article from Ajo-Franklin et al., is to demonstrate dark fiber DAS as a tool for basin-scale geothermal exploration and monitoring. The included DAS data were recorded during two days at the beginning the project. Data is stored in the .h5 (HDF5) file format, readable using various software tools, including the 'h5read' and 'h5info' functions in Matlab. Provided here are examples of methods to read and use the data with the 'h5py' package in Python.
