Analysis of Transformer Magnetizing Reactance Using Describing Function in Direct Power Control of Back-to-Back Modular Multilevel Converter with Advanced Grid Support

This paper presents a Port Controlled Hamiltonian based direct power control architecture for a back-to-back modular multilevel converter system connecting two ac sources at different frequencies. The system features advanced grid support functionalities based on IEEE 1547-2018, implemented on the inverter side. The rectifier side controller ensures reference following for active and/or reactive powers and maintains the commanded dc bus voltage. The inverter side controller ensures power command following for active and reactive powers. The proposed control architecture is designed to suppress second harmonic oscillations in powers during unbalanced grid voltage sags by dynamically adjusting the currents on each ac side. This also ensures effective elimination of any second harmonic oscillations in the equivalent dc bus voltage. Validation is performed on an OPAL-RT real-time platform with case studies on unbalanced and balanced sags, demonstrating the controller's effectiveness during real time implementation. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype further verifies these case studies, with experimental results for balanced sags due to grid simulator limitations. The results confirm the robustness and efficiency of the proposed control strategy in ensuring stable and reliable operation under various grid conditions.

Adaptive Threshold-Based Zonal Isolation of Faults in a Multiterminal DC Using Local Measurements

Fast and accurate methods of fault detection and isolation are a pre-emptive measure in multiterminal dc (MTdc) systems. Zonal isolation of faults is necessary to prevent any misopertation of the dc breakers that can lead to a shutdown of the network. Existing techniques require fast-communication or data synchronization methods have their own disadvantages. This article proposes a method for efficient fault zone isolation without the need of a communication link that prevents any misoperation of the dc breakers in a radial MTdc. This method provides individual local measurement-based control to the hybrid dc circuit breakers (dcCB). Faults created outside the zone of protection for a breaker create a change in the rate of change of current or voltage leading to misoperation. To avoid detection using a fixed threshold, an adaptive threshold based approach is suggested that updates the threshold based on the present operating status. Sensitivity analysis by varying the current limiting inductance and fault location is performed. In conclusion, a three terminal radial model of an MTdc is used for zonal isolation using power system computer aided design/electromagnetic transients including dc.

Development of Fast Decay-Energy Spectroscopy With Magnetic Microcalorimeters

Decay energy spectroscopy (DES) is an increasingly important radiometric technique arising from the unique thermal detection physics and the precision of low-temperature microcalorimetry. DES can enable high-precision analysis of very small amounts of radioactive material with simple and rapid sample preparation, making it a key new tool for nuclear safeguards, nuclear forensics, the improvement of nuclear data, measurements of absolute activity, and other applications. For problems in nuclear safeguards and nuclear forensics it is highly desirable to increase the count rates achievable in DES, while maintaining simple and rapid sample preparation. Here, in this report, we describe progress in a new project to achieve high count rates in DES by taking advantage of the physics of magnetic microcalorimetry. We describe the results of initial modeling and experiment to validate the idea, a sample fabrication technique suitable for nuclear materials laboratories, the preparation and initial tests of paramagnetic Au-Er alloy in thin foil form, and the development of a sensing coil geometry that will perform well with the increased-thickness sensor used in the new technique.

Modeling and ZVS Operation of the Isolated Modular Multilevel DC–DC Converter With a Unified Trapezoidal Wave Modulation

Here, this article introduces a unified trapezoidal wave (UTW) modulation scheme for the isolated modular multilevel dc–dc (IM2dc) converter, which consolidates multiple existing modulation strategies for the IM2dc converter, including the quasi-square wave (QSW) modulation, trapezoidal wave modulation, and sinusoidal wave modulation, into a unified framework. Furthermore, this article introduces the harmonic state-space (HSS) equations to model the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation method. The HSS model operates in the frequency domain, enabling it to circumvent the complexities associated with time-domain analysis and seamlessly integrate with the UTW modulation. This article proceeds to analyze the real and reactive power transfer characteristics of the IM2dc converter, as well as the power factor, considering the influence of multiple modulation parameters. Subsequently, it delves into the examination of zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions for the IM2dc converter based on the UTW modulation and the HSS model. The complete ZVS boundaries of the IM2dc converter, taking various voltage ratios into account, are derived. This article also illustrates the effects of including harmonic orders in the modeling process, modulation parameters, and internal harmonic ripples on the ZVS boundaries. Finally, experimental validation of the analyses is conducted on a down-scaled prototype.

Copper-Tantalum Metal Matrix Composites Consolidated from Powder Blends by Severe Plastic Deformation

We investigated the effectiveness of severe plastic deformation by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) for consolidation of metal powders into metal matrix composites. Equal volumes of copper (Cu) and tantalum (Ta) powders were consolidated at ambient temperature via different ECAE routes. Composites processed by ECAE routes 4E and 4Bc were also processed at 300 °C. The resulting materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and compression testing. Processing by route 4Bc at 300 °C resulted in the highest compressive strength, lowest anisotropy, and least strain rate sensitivity. We conclude that the superior properties achieved by this route arise from mechanical bonding due to interlocking Cu and Ta phases as well as enhanced metallurgical bonds from contact of pristine metal surfaces when the material is sheared along orthogonal planes.

Metallic Powder Core Tubular Wire Development for Additive Manufacturing

NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA, and the Center for Welding, Joining, and Coating Research (CWJCR) in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) in Golden, CO, have collaborated for nearly fifteen years to develop metallic powder core tubular wire (PCTW) feedstock for additive manufacturing (AM) using electron beam deposition. The motivation for this development was to offset dealloying observed during deposition of titanium and aluminum alloy solid wire feedstock in the LaRC electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) system and to explore novel alloy compositions by tailoring the powder fill. EBF3 is a fusion-based AM process that is performed under vacuum and is consequently prone to vaporization loss of low vapor pressure alloying elements. Research spanning four graduate student research projects succeeded in developing the basic methodology to fabricate PCTW, the mass balance equations used to define the powder fill, microstructure control through particulate inoculation, and the feasibility of producing metal matrix composite materials.

Radio Frequency Plasma Synthesis of Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNTs) for Structural Applications: Part III

The emergence of commercial quantities of BNNTs facilitates the exploration of structural material applications. BNNT-reinforced composites must exhibit extraordinary mechanical properties in order to justify the cost premium. Prevailing theory indicates that suitable BNNTs must possess an aspect ratio (AR= length/diameter) approaching 10,000 to provide effective discontinuous reinforcement under tensile loading. A survey of commercial products shows that although the quantities are sufficient, lots of uniform morphology are unavailable. Therefore, the opportunity exists to supplement procedures either during synthesis operations or post-synthesis processing in order to deliver homogeneous batches of high AR BNNTs. An assessment of relevant technologies reveals established methods compatible with sorting of BNNTs by physical dimensions, i.e., size and/or shape. Electrostatic fractionation emerges as the leading candidate, with the potential to isolate high-purity, low-defect, high AR product. The adaptation of existing equipment to the handling of fibrous particulate on the nanoscale will be paramount to success. Although currently focused on BNNTs, the concepts outlined may be applied to nanotubes synthesized from any organic or inorganic compounds. This survey sets the stage for delivering reproducible lots of BNNTs that satisfy the dimensional requirements for use in acreage structural materials.
