Synchrophasor Data Anomaly Detection on Grid Edge by 5G Communication and Adjacent Compute

The fifth-generation mobile communication (5G) technology offers the opportunities to enhance the grid real-time monitoring. The 5G-enabled phasor measurement units (PMUs) features flexible positioning and cost-effective long-term maintenance, without constraints of fixing wire. This paper is the first to demonstrate the applicability of 5G in PMU communication, and the experiment was carried out at Verizon non-standalone testbed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Advanced Wireless Communication lab. The performance of 5G-enabled PMU communication setup is reviewed and discussed in this paper, and the paper presents a real-time dynamic linear model (DML) based synchrophasor data anomaly detection application. Last but not least, the practicability of implementing 5G for wide-area protection strategies is explored and discussed by analyzing the experimental results.

Modeling and Control Using Stochastic Distribution Control Theory for Intersection Traffic Flow

In this work, we investigated stochastic distribution control theory-based traffic signal optimization to achieve a smooth and uniform flow of vehicles through signalized intersections. In this context, the static and linear dynamic stochastic distribution models were developed to express the relationship between the signal timing and the traffic queue length together with its probability density function. Two stochastic distribution control algorithms were designed to control the signal timing at intersections such that the probability density function of the traffic queue of each intersection road segment is made as narrow and as small as possible. Also, a recursive input-output traffic queue estimation model was proposed, which is data-driven and dynamic in nature, to calculate real-time traffic queue length using traffic signal timings and loop-detector data. The control algorithms were evaluated for a one-signal corridor, two-signal corridor, and 2 x 2 network of signalized intersections. MATLAB simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the use of the proposed algorithms and comparison to the existing widely-used semi-actuated control has been made. Desired results were obtained.

pnnl/grid_prediction

Two datadriven predictive approaches, namely, {\em Koopman Operator Theoretic (KOT)-based} model and {\em Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based model}, to enable effective power system state predictions. The KOT-based approaches (Robust DMD, deepDMD) capture the power system evolution as a linear dynamical system on an abstract space. The GNNs model the spatio-temporal correlations using graph convolutional network and are called Spatio-Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (STGCN). These predictive models are trained, tested and compared rigorously based on their predictions of frequencies in the IEEE 68 bus system when subjected to a disturbance. GridSTAGE framework developed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is leveraged to generate multiple datasets (in the form of PMU measurements) for training and testing by strategically creating load changes across the spatial locations of the network

Nonlinear Optics Measurements in IOTA

Nonlinear integrable optics is a recently proposed accelerator lattice design approach which allows to generate an amplitude dependent tune shift which is needed in high brightness accelerators to mitigate fast coherent instabilities. Whereas usually octupoles are used to achieve this task, this concept allows doing so without exciting any resonances, in turn preventing any particle loss. The concept is based around a special magnet design, together with specific constraints on the optics of the accelerator. To study such a system, the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) was recently constructed and commissioned at Fermilab. For the assessment of the performance of this concept, good knowledge of the optics and the (non-)linear dynamics without the special magnet is of key importance. As such, measurements were conducted in the IOTA ring, using the captured turn-by-turn data by the beam position monitors after excitation to infer quantities such as amplitude detuning and resonance driving terms. In this note, first results of these measurements are presented.

Control Parameter Sensitivity Study for Inverter-Based-Resource Dominated Grids: A Small Signal Stability Approach and Framework

The growing adoption of renewable energy is driving the prevalence of inverter-based resources (IBRs) within power grids. Future power grids will integrate both grid-following IBRs (GFM-IBRs) and grid-forming IBRs (GFL-IBRs) alongside synchronous generators. Therefore, it is crucial to perform stability studies that account for all components and especially control interactions related to IBRs. Extensive research has performed to study the IBR-related stability, however, the sensitivity study of IBRs' control parameters on system stability has not been adequately studied yet, especially from a systematic way. Therefore, this paper conducts a small signal stability analysis for a generic grid with multiple types of resources and develops an analytical framework for assessing the sensitivity of control parameters affecting stability margins. To achieve that, the non-autonomous reduced-order non-linear dynamic model is developed for a generic power system with multiple synchronous generator-based resources (SGBRs), GFM-IBRs, and GFL-IBRs. Based on the analytic model, a systematic framework for parametric sensitivity on systems' asymptotic stability is developed. A parameter sensitivity analysis based on eigenvalue methods is proposed. The impact of the droop controllers of GFM-IBRs, PQ-dispatch and the PLL controller of GFL-IBR on the system asymptotic stability is discussed. This sensitivity study is aiming to provide deep insights on control parameters' impact on system stability, and gives direction for parameter tuning in case of instability.
