Determination of the ground albedo and the index of absorption of atmospheric particulates by remote sensing. II - Application

A hemispherical radiometer has been used to obtain spectrally narrow-band measurements of the downward hemispheric diffuse and total (global) flux densities at varying solar zenith angles on 14 days over Tucson. Data are presented which illustrate the effects of temporally varying atmospheric conditions as well as clear stable conditions on the ratio of the diffuse to direct solar radiation at the earth's surface. The ground albedo and the effective imaginary term of the complex refractive index of atmospheric particulates are derived from the diffuse-direct ratio measurements on seven clear stable days at two wavelengths using the statistical procedure described by King and Herman (1979). Results indicate that the downwelling diffuse radiation field in the midvisible region in Tucson can be adequately described by Mie scattering theory if the ground albedo is 0.279 + or - 0.100 and the index of absorption is 0.0306 + or - 0.0082.

Near infrared photographic sky survey - A field index

The book presents an index of previously cataloged objects located in the fields of the northern sky included in the Steward Observatory Near Infrared Photographic Sky Survey, which was intended to be used for identification purposes in an effort to locate extremely red objects. The objects included in the index were taken from 16 catalogs of bright nebulae, dark nebulae, infrared objects, reflection nebulae, supernova remnants and other objects, and appear with their corresponding field numbers, computed field center coordinates, object name and 1950 epoch equatorial coordinates, as well as supplementary descriptive information as available. An appendix is also provided in which the center coordinates of each field are listed.

Correlative study of thermospheric gravity waves and tropospheric vorticity area index

Based on the occurrence frequency of wave-like structures in 23,691 individual measurements of thermospheric density, it is demonstrated that there is no significant hemispherical correlation between satellite-measured thermospheric wave-like structures and the tropospheric vorticity area index in the epoch 1974-1976. However, in the northern polar zone, (60-90 deg) N, wave occurrence frequency is greater for large values of the 500 mb vorticity area index.

A simulation study of the recession coefficient for antecedent precipitation index

The antecedent precipitation index (API) is a useful indicator of soil moisture conditions for watershed runoff calculations and recent attempts to correlate this index with spaceborne microwave observations have been fairly successful. It is shown that the prognostic equation for soil moisture used in some of the atmospheric general circulation models together with Thornthwaite-Mather parameterization of actual evapotranspiration leads to API equations. The recession coefficient for API is found to depend on climatic factors through potential evapotranspiration and on soil texture through the field capacity and the permanent wilting point. Climatologial data for Wisconsin together with a recently developed model for global isolation are used to simulate the annual trend of the recession coefficient. Good quantitative agreement is shown with the observed trend at Fennimore and Colby watersheds in Wisconsin. It is suggested that API could be a unifying vocabulary for watershed and atmospheric general circulation modelars.

Effective refractive index and first-order-mode cutoff conditions in InGaAsP/InP DH laser structures /lambda = 1.2-1.6 microns/

A highly accurate analytical expression for the effective refractive index in In GaAsP/InP DH lasers emitting in the 1.2-1.6 micron range is presented. This closed-form expression is used to derive simple wavelength-independent expressions for the first-order mode cutoff conditions of various lateral waveguides. The effective refractive index is a function of emission wavelength and active layer thickness, and the mode cutoff conditions are compared to experimental data from mode-stabilized 1.3 and 1.55 micron DH lasers.

Properties of material in the submillimeter wave region (instrumentation and measurement of index of refraction)

The Properties of Materials in the Submillimeter Wave Region study was initiated to instrument a system and to make measurements of the complex index of refraction in the wavelength region between 0.1 to 1.0 millimeters. While refractive index data is available for a number of solids and liquids there still exists a need for an additional systematic study of dielectric properties to add to the existing data, to consider the accuracy of the existing data, and to extend measurements in this wavelength region for other selected mateials. The materials chosen for consideration would be those with useful thermal, mechanical, and electrical characteristics. The data is necessary for development of optical components which, for example, include beamsplitters, attenuators, lenses, grids, all useful for development of instrumentation in this relatively unexploited portion of the spectrum.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the SAO-HD-GC-DM cross index version 1983

An updated and extended machine readable version of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory star catalog (SAO) is described. A correction of all errors which were found since preparation of the original catalog which resulted from misidentifications and omissions of components in multiple star systems and missing Durchmusterung numbers (the common identifier) in the SAO Catalog are included and component identifications from the Index of Visual Double Stars (IDS) are appended to all multiple SAO entries with the same DM numbers, and lower case letter identifiers for supplemental BD stars are added. A total of 11,398 individual corrections and data additions is incorporated into the present version of the cross index.
