TEM Characterization of Nanostructured Grade 91 Neutron Irradiated to 6 DPA at 300 °C and 500 °C

Previously, samples of coarse grained (CG, grain diameter > 1 µm), ultra-fine grained (UFG, 1 µm> grain diameter> 100 nm), and nanocrystalline (NC, 100 nm> grain diameter) grade 91 steel were neutron irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Grade 91 is a ferritic/martensitic steel alloy with a nominal composition of Fe-9%Cr-1%Mo by weight, and it is being studied for applications in advanced nuclear reactor designs including as a fuel cladding material in gas cooled reactors. To assess the viability of this alloy for nuclear applications, the role of grain boundary size has not been sufficiently explored as a mechanism for developing radiation-tolerant materials. To achieve an UFG microstructure the material was processed using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and the NC microstructure was achieved through high pressure torsion (HPT). Such samples of various geometries for different types of characterization were irradiated to a dose of 6 displacements per atom (DPA) at separate temperature conditions of 300 °C and 500 °C. Thus, there were a total of 6 experimental conditions, three grain sizes (CG, UFG, and NC), each irradiated at two different temperature conditions (300 °C and 500 °C).

Measurement of the e + e − → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . cross sections at s from 2.3094 to 3.0800 GeV

The Born cross sections and effective form factors of the process e + e − → Λ Σ ¯ 0 + c . c . are measured at 14 center-of-mass energy points from 2.3094 to 3.0800 GeV, based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ( 478.5 ± 4.8 ) pb − 1 collected with the BESIII detector. A nonzero Born cross section is observed at the center-of-mass energy of 2.3094 GeV with a statistical significance of more than five standard deviations, and the cross sections at other energies are obtained with improved precision compared to earlier measurements from the Collaboration. The Born cross-section line shape is described better by a shape considering the strong-interaction effects than by a pQCD motivated functional form. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Study of excited Ξ states in ψ ( 3686 ) → K − Λ Ξ ¯ + + c . c .

Based on a sample of ( 448.1 ± 2.9 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decays of ψ ( 3686 ) → K − Λ Ξ ¯ + + c . c . with Ξ ¯ + → Λ ¯ π + , Λ ¯ → p ¯ π + are studied. We investigate the two excited resonances, Ξ ( 1690 ) − and Ξ ( 1820 ) − , which are each observed with large significance ( ≫ 10 σ ) in the K − Λ invariant mass distributions. A partial wave analysis is performed, and the spin-parities of Ξ ( 1690 ) − and Ξ ( 1820 ) − are measured to be 1 2 − and 3 2 − , respectively. The masses, widths, and product branching fractions of Ξ ( 1690 ) − and Ξ ( 1820 ) − are also measured. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Observation of e⁺e⁻ → pp$\bar{p}\bar{n}\pi^-$ + c. c.

Using data taken at 29 center-of-mass energies between 4.16 and 4.70 GeV with the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of approximately 18.8 fb -1 , the process e⁺e⁻ → pp$\overline{p}\overline{n}\pi^-$ + c. c. is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 11.5σ. The average Born cross sections in the energy ranges of (4.160, 4.380) GeV, (4.400, 4.600) GeV and (4.610, 4.700) GeV are measured to be (21.5 ± 5.7 ± 1.2) fb, (46.3 ± 10.6 ± 2.5) fb and (59.0 ± 9.4 ± 3.2) fb, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The line shapes of the $\overline{p}\overline{n}$ and ppπ⁻ invariant mass spectra are consistent with phase space distributions, indicating that no hexaquark or di-baryon state is observed.

Conversion of CO 2 to Methanol and Ethanol on Pt/CeO x /TiO 2 (110): Enabling Role of Water in C–C Bond Formation

The surface chemistry of alcohol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation has been investigated using kinetic testing, ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and DFT calculations over a multicomponent system where Pt and ceria nanoparticles coexisted on a titania template, Pt/CeO x /TiO 2 (110). Due to its high ability to bind and activate CO 2 , not seen for typical Cu-ZnO catalysts, the Pt-CeO x -TiO 2 interface is excellent for the hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol with some ethanol also being produced (21% selectivity). The results of AP-XPS and DFT calculations indicate that the active state involves a mixture of Ti 4+ /Ti 3+ , Ce 3+ and Pt 0 /Pt + . A fast pathway for the formation of CH 3 O species is only plausible when Ce 3+ and Pt are present. The addition of water to the reaction feed facilitates the first hydrogenation of CO 2 and substantially enhances the surface coverage of C-containing species (CH 3 O, HCOO, CO 3 , CH x ), facilitating the formation of C-C bonds and the production of ethanol (38% selectivity).

On the mechanisms of J c increment and degradation in high- J c Ba122 tapes made by different processing methods

We compared the grain and grain boundary (GB) nanostructures in two Ba122 tapes with similarly high J c . The Ag-sheathed tape made by hot pressing has larger, more plate-like grains with better c-axis alignment but has more GBs blocked by FeAs and Ba–O. In contrast, the tape made by cold pressing with an Ag-Sn/stainless steel sheath possesses fewer plate-like grains and weaker grain alignment but has more continuous current paths with clean physically well-connected GBs. Our nanostructural comparison emphasizes the strong need to achieve both good grain alignment and clean GBs for further J c improvement of Ba122 tapes.

Investigation of the \(\gamma \)-ray Properties of the \(2^+\) States in \(^{14}\)C

The properties of the 2$^+_1$ and 2$^+_2$ excited states in 14 C were studied in an experiment conducted at Argonne National Laboratory. A 9 Be( 6 Li,pγ) fusion-evaporation reaction and the GRETINA-ORRUBA setup were employed to populate states of 14 C and detect γ-particle coincidence events. Finally, the precise determination of the 2$^+_1$ level energy, complemented by the estimation of the γ-ray branch of the 2$^+_2$ near-threshold state, will serve as a benchmark to test the Shell Model Embedded in the Continuum calculations.

Kinetic Probes of the Origin of Activity in MOF-Based C–H Oxidation Catalysis

The development of homogeneous catalysis is enabled by the availability of a rich toolkit of kinetics experiments, such as the Hgdrop test, that differentiate catalytic activity at ligand-supported metal complexes from potential heterogeneous catalysts derived from decomposition of molecular species. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered significant attention as platforms for catalysis at site-isolated, interstitial catalyst sites. Unlike homogeneous catalysis, relatively few strategies have been advanced to evaluate the origin of catalytic activity in MOF-promoted reactions. Many of the MOFs that have been examined as potential catalysts are comprised of molecular constituents that represent viable catalysts in the absence of the extended MOF lattice, and thus interfacial sites and leached homogeneous species represent potential sources of catalyst activity. Here, we demonstrate that analysis of deuterium kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) and olefin epoxidation diastereoselectivity provides probes of the origin of catalytic activity in MOF-promoted oxidation reactions. These analyses support involvement of lattice-based Fe sites in the turnover-limiting step of C–H activation with Fe-MOF-74-based materials (i.e., the MOF functions as a bona fide catalyst) and evidence that Cu 2 -based MOF MIL-125-Cu 2 O 2 functions as a solid-state initiator for solution-phase oxidation chemistry and is not involved in the turnover limiting step (i.e., the MOF does not function as a catalyst for substrate functionalization). furthermore, we anticipate that the simple experiments described here will provide a valuable tool for clarifying the role of MOFs in C–H oxidation reactions.

Mutual Diffusion Coefficients of Na 2 SO 4 at C = 0.02989 mol·dm -3 and 298.15 K by Using Rayleigh Interferometry with Free Diffusion Boundary Conditions: Experimental Test of the Effect of the C 3/2 Concentration Dependence of Refractive Index at Low Concentration

Rayleigh interferometry is one of the most precise and accurate methods for the experimental determination of the mutual diffusion coefficients of both electrolytes and non-electrolytes in liquid solutions. For binary solutions at moderate and high concentrations where the concentration dependences of both diffusion coefficient and refractive index can be assumed to be linear or almost linear and the concentration difference ΔC between a pair of solutions undergoing free diffusion is not large compared to their average concentration, and by using proper combinations of the interference fringe positions as they vary with time, under these conditions diffusion coefficients are obtained that are independent of the size of ΔC. However, this situation becomes more complicated at low concentrations for electrolyte solutions where the concentration dependences of both the diffusion coefficient and refractive index are non-linear, with C 1/2 dependence for the diffusion coefficient and C 3/2 dependence for the refractive index. As a test of these effects on calculated mutual diffusion of electrolyte solutions at low concentrations as measured by Rayleigh interferometry, apparent mutual diffusion coefficients D v,a (volume-fixed reference frame) were measured for fixed average concentrations C=(0.02989 ± 0.00001) mol·dm –3 of Na 2 SO 4 (aq) at 298.15 K while varying ΔC/C from 0.66673 to 2, a threefold variation. The dependence of the diffusion coefficient on ΔC/C was found to be linear, yielding D v = 1.041 6 × 10 –9 m 2 ·s –1 for an infinitely small concentration difference between the diffusing solutions.

Effect of aluminum on the FeCr(Al) alloy oxidation resistance in steam environment at low temperature (400 °C) and high temperature (1200 °C)

The effect of aluminum in the FeCr(Al) alloys on the corrosion behavior was studied at two temperatures (400 °C and 1200 °C). For the Fe-21Cr alloy, Cr 2 O 3 layer was formed upon exposure to both temperatures. The addition of Al altered the corrosion mechanism of the alloy. At 1200 °C, a thin α-Al 2 O 3 is formed on the Fe-21Cr-5.5Al alloy. Whereas, at low temperature, a continuous Cr 2 O 3 is formed at the top with an internal Al 2 O 3 layer. These results show that FeCrAl alloys hold promise as Fuel Cladding Materials with Al playing a crucial role under operational as well as accident-like conditions.

Crystal structure of haloxon, C 14 H 14 C l3 O 6 P

The crystal structure of haloxon has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional theory techniques. Haloxon crystallizes in space group P2 1 /n (#14) with a = 19.60382(6), b = 10.05473(3), c = 8.73591(2) Å, β = 92.6617(2)°, V = 1720.088(11) Å 3 , and Z = 4. The structure consists of discrete molecules. The mean planes of the fused ring systems are approximately 0–11 and 011. The rings form staggered stacks perpendicular to these planes. There are no traditional hydrogen bonds in the structure, but several C–H∙∙∙O and C–H∙∙∙Cl hydrogen bonds contribute to the crystal energy. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™ (PDF®).

TiO 2 Nanoparticles Enabling Photocatalytic Desulfurization for C–C Coupling Reaction Using Visible Light

We uncover a surface-mediated mechanism for visible-light-driven photocatalytic desulfurization of thiols on titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles under LED illumination (>420 nm). Combined diffuse reflectance, infrared, and cryogenic electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy verify the formation of a surface thiol–Ti charge-transfer complex that introduces visible-light absorption into an otherwise UV-active reaction system. Selective photoexcitation of this surface complex drives interfacial charge transfer, directly activating the adsorbed thiol and inducing C–S bond scission without the band gap excitation of TiO 2 . The resulting carbon-centered radical intermediates are intercepted by styrene to form C–C coupling products. These results uncover a distinct surface-mediated photocatalytic mechanism in which charge-transfer complex formation governs both light absorption and chemical activation, providing a mechanistic framework for extending visible-light reactivity to wide-bandgap metal oxide photocatalysts.

Mechanical testing of PH13-8Mo H950 Steel for Xue-Wierzbicki Fracture Criterion Determination at 20° C and -40° C

Mechanical testing was conducted to collect the data needed to build a Xue-Wierzbicki (XW) fracture model for PH13-8 Mo H950 stainless steel (PH 13-8 SS). This model is intended for use in structural analysis of this material between room temperature and -40° C. Tests were performed on four different specimen geometries such that a range of stress states were characterized at room temperature and -40° C. Tensile tests on R5 tensile specimens were also performed to assess material anisotropy. Fracture toughness test were also conducted. The fracture toughness of this material at -40° C was 68% of the room-temperature value. Material strength generally increased with decreasing temperature while the opposite trend was observed for ductility. These trends were most pronounced for specimens with the largest stress triaxialities.

To Interoperability And Beyond: Interoperable Types Through the Promises of C and C++ and ABI Abuse [Slides]

This presentation presents a technique that allows passing of Fortran nested-type hierarchies interoperably to C++. The technique is motivated by the Eulerian Application Project’s need to port code from Fortran to C++ to utilize the Kokkos performance portability library. The resulting method allows hierarchies of types to become interoperable while at the same time transforming Fortran array members of the original Fortran type into Kokkos::Views in the resulting C++ type.

BVR{sub c}I{sub c} Observations, Third-body Orbital Study, and Analysis of the UV Leo-type, Pre-W UMA Binary V642 Virginis

V642 Vir is a polar spotted, well-detached, UV Leo-type, low-mass, pre-WUMa (T1 ~ 4250K, ~K6V) eclipsing binary. It was observed in 2020 April, May, and June at the Dark Sky Observatory in North Carolina, USA with the 0.81 m reflector of Appalachian State University. A total of 88 timings were used in our 22-year period study which included 12 Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) timings. The O - C plots show a low-amplitude oscillation of residuals that points to the existence of an orbiting third body, a dwarf of minimum mass, 0.15 M {sub ⊙} in an eccentric orbit (e = 0.41), with an orbital period of 20.07 yr. The odd light curves of V642 Virginis indicate that it has polar spots similar to UV Leo and the recently published V1023 Per. Its present large polar spot region indicates that it must have a strong magnetic field and that it is synchronously rotating. The BVR{sub c}I{sub c} simultaneous Wilson–Devinney Program solution gives a detached binary (primary and secondary components are underfilling their respective Roche Lobes, with 76% and 78% fill outs respectively). The cool spot region models near the pole of the primary component (centered at 10° colatitude) and is angled toward the secondary component. Its large radius (68°) and T-fact (T{sub spot}/T{sub surface} = 0.69) also attest to the conclusion of the strength of the magnetic field. The small ΔT in the components (~318 K) and mass ratio near unity (0.9542 ± 0.0005) show that the stars are similar in spectral type (secondary ~K9V). The inclination is high, ~86.87 ± 0.04°, yet there is no time of constant light due to the two stars’ essentially equal radii.

Nuclear Transparency from Quasi-elastic ¹²C(e, e'p) scattering reaction up to Q2 = 14.2 (GeV/c)2 in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

Color Transparency (CT) is a unique prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) where the final (and/or initial) state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear medium are suppressed for exclusive processes at high momentum transfers. While this phenomenon has been observed for mesons, there has never been a conclusive observation for baryons. A clear signal of CT for baryons would be the first evidence of baryons fluctuating to a small size in the nucleus, and the onset would show the transition from nucleon-meson picture to quark-gluon degrees of freedom. The experiment E1206107, searching for the onset of CT in protons was completed in Hall C at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab) using the upgraded 12 GeV e- beam. It used the High Momentum Spectrometer (HMS) and the new Super High Momentum spectrometer (SHMS) in coincidence to measure the e- + ¹²C ? e-' + p + X reaction in quasi-elastic kinematics. Data were collected on a ¹²C target over the range of Q2 = 8 - 14.3 (GeV/c)2, covering the region where a previous p + A ? p' + p + X experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) had observed an enhancement. Proton Transparency (PT) was extracted from these data. A rise in the PT as a function of Q2 (defined as the square of the negative of the 4-momentum transfer by the scattered electron) is predicted to be a signature of the onset of CT. Our data showed no significant increase and consistent with the traditional nuclear physics calculation. This dissertation discusses the theory and implementation of the CT experiment, summarizes the data analysis and presents results on hydrogen normalization and nuclear transparency.
