Influence of soluble oligomeric aluminum on precipitation in the Al-KOH-H2O system

The role of oligomeric aluminate (Al(OH)4-) species in the precipitation of aluminum phases such as gibbsite (a-Al(OH)3) from aqueous hydroxide solutions remains unclear and difficult to probe directly, despite its importance to developing accurate predictions of Al solubility in highly alkaline systems. Precipitation in this system entails a transition from predominantly tetrahedrally coordinated Al species in solution to octahedrally coordinated Al in gibbsite. Here we report a quantitative study of dissolved Al in the Al-KOH-H2O system using a combination of molecular spectroscopies. We established a relationship between changes in 27Al NMR chemical shifts and the relative intensity of Raman vibrational bands, indicative of variations in the ensemble speciation of Al in solution, and the formation of unique contact ion pair interactions with the aluminate dimer, Al2O(OH)62 . A strong correlation between the extent of Al oligomerization and the amount of solvated Al was demonstrated by systematically varying the KOH:Al molar ratio. The concentration of dissolved oligomeric Al in solution also directly impacted the particle size and morphology of gibbsite; high concentrations of dimeric Al2O(OH)62-, yielded smaller and more numerous anhedral to subhedral gibbsite particles, while low concentrations yielded fewer and larger euhedral gibbsite platelets. The collective observations suggest a key role of the Al2O(OH)62- dimer in promoting gibbsite precipitation from solution, where the potassium ion-paired dimer possibly catalyzes a more rapid transformation of Al coordination from tetrahedral in solution to octahedral in gibbsite.

A search for H2O masers in 100 active dwarf galaxies

ABSTRACT We present the results of the first dedicated survey for 22 GHz H2O maser emission in dwarf galaxies outside of the Local Group, with the aim of discovering disc masers. Studies of disc masers yield accurate and precise measurements of black hole (BH) mass, and such measurements in dwarf galaxies would be key to understanding the low-mass end of BH–galaxy coevolution. We used the Green Bank Telescope to survey 100 nearby (z ≲ 0.055) dwarf galaxies (M* ≲ 109.5 M⊙) with optical emission line ratios indicative of accretion on to a massive black hole. We detected no new masers down to a limit of ∼12 mJy (5σ). We compared the properties of our sample with those of ∼1850 known detections and non-detections in massive galaxies. We find, in agreement with previous studies, that masers are preferentially hosted by Seyferts and highly obscured, [O iii]-bright active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our sample has fewer Seyferts, is less obscured, and is [O iii]-faint. Though the overall maser detection rate is ∼3 per cent in massive galaxies, the predicted rate for our sample, weighted by its optical properties, is ∼0.6–1.7 per cent, corresponding to a probability of making no detections of ∼20–50 per cent. We also found a slight increase in the detection rate with increased stellar mass in previously surveyed galaxies. However, further observations are required to discern whether there is an intrinsic difference between the maser fraction in active dwarf galaxies and in their massive counterparts for the same AGN properties.

Infrared Absorption Spectra of H2SO4, SO3, SO2, and H2O at 300C and 350C

Mid infrared absorption spectra of sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sulfur trioxide (SO3), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and water (H2O) were collected in a high temperature gas cell operating at either 300C or 350C. The spectra were collected using tunable external cavity quantum cascade lasers (ECQCLs) tuning, which were capable of operating over the wavelength range from approximately 7 microns to 9 microns, where H2SO4 and SO3 have their strongest absorption features. The spectra can be used as a library for developing gas sensors.

Kinetics and mechanism of the formation of water cluster ions from O2(plus) and H2O in He, Ar, N2, and O2 at 296 K

The reaction sequence leading from O2(+) to H3O(+)-H2O was examined in He, Ar, N2 and O2 carrier gases in a flowing afterglow system. The rate constants for the reactions were measured and the kinetic analysis for their determination is presented. For M = N2, two new steps involving the formation and reaction of O2(+)-N2 were proposed and examined. The rate constants are discussed and compared with other experimental values.

Measurements of recombination of electrons with H3O(plus)-(H2O)n series ions

Recombination coefficients of electrons with ions of the hydrated hydronium ion series (H3O(+))(H2O)n, where n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, were determined with a microwave afterglow/mass spectrometer apparatus. Afterglow measurements of electron density decays in helium-water vapor mixtures are correlated with the decay of mass-identified ion currents to the wall of the microwave cavity. By varying the temperature of the gas and the partial pressure of the water vapor in the mixture, different groups of hydronium series ions are made to dominate the afterglow.

VUV dissociative excitation cross sections of H2O, NH3, and CH4 by electron impact

Absolute excitation functions for excited fragments resulting from electron bombardment of H2O, NH3, and CH4 by low-energy electrons (0 to 300 eV) have been measured in the vacuum ultraviolet (1100 to 1950 A). The predominant emission for each molecule was the H Lyman-alpha line, while the O I, N I, C I, and C II emissions were at least an order of magnitude weaker. Absolute cross sections at 100 eV are given along with the appearance potential of the various processes and the possible dissociative-excitation channels through which such processes proceed.

Petrogenesis of lunar rocks: Rb-Sr constraints and lack of H2O

Rb and Sr isotopic data and other chemical data indicate major lunar differentiation at about 4.6 AE and very limited subsequent differentiation. The constraints of limited differentiation post 4.6 AE and the apparent lack of H2O on the moon, when applied to the derivation and petrogenesis of lunar samples, suggest the following: (1) soil samples, breccias, metaclastic rocks, and feldspathic basalts represent mixtures of repeatedly-modified clastic material, which was ultimately derived from materials formed during the about 4.6 AE differentiation; and (2) mare basalts crystallized from melts which formed by partial melting and, which developed without equilibration between the melt and crystalline residuum.

The time dependent growth of H2O-H2SO4 aerosols by heteromolecular condensation

A theory for the time-dependent growth of solution droplets by heteromolecular condensation is presented. The theory is applied to the growth of H2O-H2SO4 aerosols for relative humidities less than 100 per cent. Growth curves (droplet radius as a function of time) for different values of relative humidity are evaluated.

Line positions of H2O in the 1.33 to 1.45 micron region

Results are presented for an experimental investigation, using a vacuum IR spectrometer, of the line positions and strengths of water vapor in the spectral region from 6900 to 7500 kaysers. The line-center frequencies of the vibration-rotation transitions of the five H2O bands in this spectral interval are determined along with the rotational levels of the (101), (200), (021), (120), and (002) states. It is noted that several of the upper-state levels are perturbed by resonance effects involving either Fermi coupling or Coriolis coupling of the near-resonance levels of various states. Tables are provided which list the measured line-center frequencies, upper- and lower-state rotational quantum numbers, ground-state energy levels, line strengths, and band assignments. It is shown that the (101) and (021) bands are type A with origins at 7249.811 and 6871.51 kaysers, respectively, while the (200), (002), and (120) bands are type B with origins at 7201.540, 7445.07, and 6775.10 kaysers, respectively.

Volatile products in the corrosion of Cr, Mo, Ti and four superalloys exposed to O2 containing H2O and gaseous NaCl

Cooled target collection techniques were used to study the formation of volatile products when samples of Cr, Ti, IN-738, 713C, NASA-TRW VIA and B-1900 were exposed, at elevated temperatures, to oxidizing environments containing H2O(g) and NaCl(g). Samples were heated to 1050 C in one atmosphere of slowly flowing oxygen, saturated with water at 21 C, and containing about 50 ppm NaCl(g). Volatile products were detected for all materials except B-1900 and Ti. High pressure mass spectrometric sampling was used to directly identify volatile products emanating from samples of Cr and IN-738 subject to the above environments.

The nucleation of H2SO4-H2O solution aerosol particles in the stratosphere

The homogeneous- and heterogeneous-heteromolecular nucleation of H2SO4-H2O solution droplets in the stratosphere is investigated and order-of-magnitude nucleation rates are evaluated. The heterogeneous processes considered are nucleation onto soluble particles, flat insoluble surfaces, spherical insoluble particles, and ions. The relative importance of the various nucleation mechanisms is determined for conditions assumed to correspond to 18 km altitude. Under the assumed conditions, the heterogeneous nucleation rate onto insoluble particles is shown to be about 10 to the 69th times larger than the homogeneous nucleation rate and 10 to the 57th times larger than nucleation onto ions.

Atmospheric lidar research applying to H2O, O2 and aerosols

Experimental research on a near infrared tunable dye laser was reported, and theoretical simulations were presented for various lidar configurations. The visible and nearinfrared wavelengths considered were suitable for observations of aerosols, water vapor, molecular oxygen pressure and temperature in the troposphere and above. The first phase of development work was described on a ruby pumped, tunable dye laser for the wavelength region 715 to 740 nanometers. Lidar simulations were summarized for measurements of H2O and for two color lidar observations of aerosols in the atmosphere.
