Validation of a three-dimensional viscous analysis of axisymmetric supersonic inlet flow fields

A three-dimensional viscous marching analysis for supersonic inlets was developed. To verify this analysis several benchmark axisymmetric test configurations were studied and are compared to experimental data. Detailed two-dimensional results for shock-boundary layer interactions are presented for flows with and without boundary layer bleed. Three dimensional calculations of a cone at angle of attack and a full inlet at attack are also discussed and evaluated. Results of the calculations demonstrate the code's ability to predict complex flow fields and establish guidelines for future calculations using similar codes.

Outer satellite atmospheres: Their nature and planetary interactions

Significant progress is reported in early modeling analysis of observed sodium cloud images with our new model which includes the oscillating Io plasma torus ionization sink. Both the general w-D morphology of the region B cloud as well as the large spatial gradient seen between the region A and B clouds are found to be consistent with an isotropic flux of sodium atoms from Io. Model analysis of the spatially extended high velocity directional features provided substantial evidence for a magnetospheric wind driven gas escape mechanism from Io. In our efforts to define the source(s) of hydrogen atoms in the Saturn system, major steps were taken in order to understand the role of Titan. We have completed the comparison of the Voyager UVS data with previous Titan model results, as well as the update of the old model computer code to handle the spatially varying ionization sink for H atoms.

Aerothermal modeling program, phase 2

The main objective of the NASA sponsored Aerothermal Modeling Program, Phase 2--Element A, is to develop an improved numerical scheme for predicting combustor flow fields. This effort consists of the following three technical tasks. Task 1 involves the selection and evaluation of various candidate numerical techniques. Task 2 involves an in-depth evaluation of the selected numerical schemes. Task 3 involves the convection-diffusion scheme and the direct solver that will be incorporated in the NASA 3-D elliptic code (COM3S).

Ion-cyclotron wave heating of heavy ions in the equatorial magnetosphere - A numerical simulation theory

A 1-2/2 dimensional hybrid numerical simulation code is used to study the heating of cold H(+) ions and heavy ions by electromagnetic ion-cyclotron waves (ICWs) in the ring current region of the equatorial magnetosphere. Consideration is given to a plasma consisting of electrons, hot H(+) ions, and cold heavy ions in which the ICWs are driven by the temperature anisotropy of the hot protons. For large-amplitude ICWs, it is found that the cold H(+) ions are preferentially heated over the heavy ions although the cold H(+) ions are heated by a three-step process.

Extension of the BRYNTRN code to monoenergetic light ion beams

A monoenergetic version of the BRYNTRN transport code is extended to beam transport of light ions (H-2, H-3, He-3, and He-4) in shielding materials (thick targets). The redistribution of energy in nuclear reactions is included in transport solutions that use nuclear fragmentation models. We also consider an equilibrium target-fragment spectrum for nuclei with mass number greater than four to include target fragmentation effects in the linear energy transfer (LET) spectrum. Illustrative results for water and aluminum shielding, including energy and LET spectra, are discussed for high-energy beams of H-2 and He-4.

Joint Synchronization Of Viterbi And Reed-Solomon Decoders

Synchronization times reduced to reduce loss of data. Scheme for decoding received doubly encoded binary-data signal provides for joint synchronization of two decoders. Applies to concatenated error-correcting channel coding communication system in which, at transmitter, data first encoded by interleaved Reed-Solomon code (block code), then by convolutional code.

Landing Gear Integration in Aircraft Conceptual Design

The design of the landing gear is one of the more fundamental aspects of aircraft design. The design and integration process encompasses numerous engineering disciplines, e.g., structure, weights, runway design, and economics, and has become extremely sophisticated in the last few decades. Although the design process is well-documented, no attempt has been made until now in the development of a design methodology that can be used within an automated environment. As a result, the process remains to be a key responsibility for the configuration designer and is largely experience-based and graphically-oriented. However, as industry and government try to incorporate multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) methods in the conceptual design phase, the need for a more systematic procedure has become apparent. The development of an MDO-capable design methodology as described in this work is focused on providing the conceptual designer with tools to help automate the disciplinary analyses, i.e., geometry, kinematics, flotation, and weight. Documented design procedures and analyses were examined to determine their applicability, and to ensure compliance with current practices and regulations. Using the latest information as obtained from industry during initial industry survey, the analyses were in terms modified and expanded to accommodate the design criteria associated with the advanced large subsonic transports. Algorithms were then developed based on the updated analysis procedures to be incorporated into existing MDO codes.

Soft-Decision Decoding of Binary Linear Block Codes Based on an Iterative Search Algorithm

This correspondence presents a suboptimum soft-decision decoding scheme for binary linear block codes based on an iterative search algorithm. The scheme uses an algebraic decoder to iteratively generate a sequence of candidate codewords one at a time using a set of test error patterns that are constructed based on the reliability information of the received symbols. When a candidate codeword is generated, it is tested based on an optimality condition. If it satisfies the optimality condition, then it is the most likely (ML) codeword and the decoding stops. If it fails the optimality test, a search for the ML codeword is conducted in a region which contains the ML codeword. The search region is determined by the current candidate codeword and the reliability of the received symbols. The search is conducted through a purged trellis diagram for the given code using the Viterbi algorithm. If the search fails to find the ML codeword, a new candidate is generated using a new test error pattern, and the optimality test and search are renewed. The process of testing and search continues until either the MEL codeword is found or all the test error patterns are exhausted and the decoding process is terminated. Numerical results show that the proposed decoding scheme achieves either practically optimal performance or a performance only a fraction of a decibel away from the optimal maximum-likelihood decoding with a significant reduction in decoding complexity compared with the Viterbi decoding based on the full trellis diagram of the codes.
