The quiet-time spectra of cosmic-ray electrons of energies between 10 and 200 MeV observed on OGO-5.

Measurement of spectra of cosmic-ray electrons of energies between 10 and 200 MeV over a one-year period starting 1968 March. The measurement was made with a detector system on board the OGO-5 satellite. The instrument consists of a solid-state dE/dx detector, a total-energy CsI detector, a gas Cerenkov threshold detector, and two scintillation guard counters. Time periods during which no solar-flare events were recorded were selected for the study. It was found that during these quiet periods there were numerous intensity variations of the electron flux. These variations, which are seen only below 25 MeV, do not show marked correlation with any solar or interplanetary-medium parameters. The flux of the electrons of energies above 25 MeV, on the other hand, showed a gradual decrease over the one-year period, paralleling the neutron monitor intensity. The parameter describing this long-term modulation is almost independent of the rigidity of the electrons in the reported energy range. The physical implication of the finding is discussed.

Comparison of computer-acquired performance data from several fixed spaced planar diodes.

Performance data are compared for thermionic diodes with various tungsten or rhenium emitters and niobium or molybdenum collectors. The planar converters have guard-ringed collectors and a fixed space of 10 mils (0.254 mm). The data were acquired using a computer. The parameters are the temperatures of the emitter Te, collector Tc, and cesium reservoir Tr. The composite plots have constant Te and varying Tc or Tr or both. The envelope and composite plots having constant Te are presented. The diodes were tested at increments between 1500 and 2000 K for the emitters, 750 and 1100 K for the collectors, and 520 and 650 K for the reservoirs.

A narrowband, crystal controlled biomedical telemetry system.

A miniature, single-channel, crystal-controlled transmitter has been developed for biomedical applications. A narrow-band frequency modulation (plus or minus 7 kHz) of the RF is used to achieve maximum operating range with minimum transmitting power. The radiated power is limited to stay within the 50 microvolts/m at 15 m FCC requirement for low-power transmitters in the 88- to 108-MHz band. This technique offers a number of advantages. First only manufacturer's type approval is required for the device and the user does not need a license. Second maximum operating range can be achieved within the FCC power limitations by using a narrow-band that is consistent with the required medical information bandwidth. A third advantage in using the 88- to 108-MHz band is that the commercial FM stations are relatively widely spaced and carefully regulated so that by selecting the transmitter's frequency in the guard band between stations, minimum interference from other transmitter sources is encountered.

Thermal characterization of reusable external insulation for the space shuttle.

Thermal protection systems utilizing reusable ceramic external insulations are under study for application to the orbiter vehicle of NASA's space shuttle system which is to be launched by an expendable booster, remain in orbit for a week or two, reenter the earth's atmosphere, and land like a conventional aircraft. The required reuse capability is for 100 missions. The thermal characterization of the reusable external insulation (REI) is described. Thermal conductivity measurements are described for a series of mullite-based REIs with densities ranging from 100 to 300 kg/cu m, including opacified variations of the mullite material designed for reduction of the radiant component of heat transport. The results of thermal conductivity measurements performed on guarded-hot-plate equipment from 150 to above 1200 K in different vacuum and gaseous environments are described. Measurements were also made with exceptionally large temperature differences to detect transparency effects in the unopacified REIs. These measurements were made to provide design data for the flight conditions, and to aid in theoretical computations aimed at separating and optimizing the heat transport components.

Computer acquired performance data from a chemically vapor-deposited-rhenium, niobium planar diode

Performance data from a chemically vapor-deposited-rhenium, niobium thermionic converter are presented. The planar converter has a guard-ringed collector and a nominal fixed spacing of 0.25 mm (10 mils). The data were obtained by using a computerized acquisition system and are available on request to one of the authors on microfiche as individual and composite parametric current, voltage curves. The parameters are the temperatures of the emitter T sub E collector T sub C, and cesium reservoir T sub R. The composite plots have constant T sub E and varying T sub C or T sub R, or both. Current, voltage envelopes having constant T sub E with and without fixed T sub C appear in the present report. The diode was tested at increments between 1600 and 2000 K for the emitter Hohlraum, 800 to 1100 K for the collector, and 540 and 650 K for the reservoir. A total of 312 current, voltage curves were obtained in the present performance evaluation. Current, voltage envelopes from three rhenium emitter converters evaluated in the present program are also given. The data are compared at commom emitter Hohlraum temperatures.

Energy conversion research and development with diminiodes

Diminiodes are variable-gap cesium diodes with plane miniature guarded electrodes. These converters allow thermionic evaluations of tiny pieces of rare solids. In addition to smallness, diminiode advantages comprise simplicity, precision, fabrication ease, parts interchangeability, cleanliness, full instrumentation, direct calibration, ruggedness, and economy. Diminiodes with computerized thermionic performance mapping make electrode screening programs practical.

Thermionic performance of a cesium diminiode with relatively impure 110-tungsten electrodes

Thermionic performance data from a miniature plane cesium diode (diminiode) with 110-tungsten electrodes are presented. The diminiode has a guard-ringed collector and a spacing of 0.23 mm. The data were obtained by using a computerized acquisition system. The diode was tested at increments between 1700 and 1900 K for the emitter, 694 and 1101 K for the collector, and 519 and 650 K for the reservoir. A maximum power density of 4.5 W/sq cm was obtained at an emitter temperature of 1900 K. This relatively low output probably results from high carbon and sodium impurities in the electrode materials.

A multisensor system for airborne surveillance of oil pollution

The U.S. Coast Guard is developing a prototype airborne oil surveillance system for use in its Marine Environmental Protection Program. The prototype system utilizes an X-band side-looking radar, a 37-GHz imaging microwave radiometer, a multichannel line scanner, and a multispectral low light level system. The system is geared to detecting and mapping oil spills and potential pollution violators anywhere within a 25 nmi range of the aircraft flight track under all but extreme weather conditions. The system provides for false target discrimination and maximum identification of spilled materials. The system also provides an automated detection alarm, as well as a color display to achieve maximum coupling between the sensor data and the equipment operator.

Energy-conversion research and development with diminiodes

Diminiodes are variable-gap cesium diodes with plane emitters and guarded collectors a few millimeters in diameter. This miniaturization allows the electrodes to be made of little pieces of rare materials like single crystals of unusual metals or metallides. In addition to smallness, diminiode advantages include simplicity, precision, fabrication ease, parts interchangeability, cleanliness, full instrumentation, ruggedness, and economy. The diminiode design also stresses effective, economical use with computers that control, collect, and correlate thermionic current and voltage data. Such diminiode tests completed recently for ultrapure metal electrodes produced relatively low, sharply defined ultimate power outputs.

Radiative contribution to the thermal conductivity of fibrous insulations

An approach is shown for using a simple two-flux model to interpret infrared transmission data for a variety of reuseable surface insulations materials and to calculate the radiation transmission. A description is given of preliminary experiments on mullite and silica-based materials. The calculated parameters are compared with the measured values of the total thermal conductivity, as determined on guarded hot plate equipment. It is pointed out that for many samples the newly developed four-flux model must be utilized because the scattering properties of the fibers are often dependent on the wavelength of the radiation.

Terrestrial applications of FEP-encapsulated solar cell modules

The NASA-Lewis Research Center program of transferring the FEP-encapsulated solar cell technology developed for the space program to terrestrial applications is presented. The electrical power system design and the array mechanical design are described, and power systems being tested are discussed. The latter are located at NOAA-RAMOS weather stations at Sterling, Va., and Mammoth Mountain, Calif.; on the roof of the Lewis Research Center; on a NOAA-Coast Guard buoy in the Gulf of Mexico; in a U.S. Forest Service mountaintop voice repeater station in the Inyo National Forest, Calif., and in a backpack charger for portable transmitter/receivers being used in the same place. Preliminary results of testing are still incomplete, but show that rime ice can cause cracks in modular cells without damaging the FEP though, which keeps the grid lines intact, and that electrically active elements of the module must be completely sealed from salt water to prevent FEP delamination.
