Highly efficient La/Ni co-doped strontium titanate catalyst for co-production of propylene and hydrogen from propane in protonic ceramic electrochemical cells

A highly efficient La/Ni co-doped strontium titanate (LSNT) perovskite catalyst is developed and integrated in a protonic ceramic electrochemical cell for co-production of propylene and high-purity hydrogen from commercial propane feedstock. Propane conversion and hydrogen production rate can be effectively enhanced under an applied current due to the electrochemical promotion effect and/or shifted reaction equilibrium induced by rapid separation of hydrogen product. Water vapor in the feed gas could significantly improve the catalyst stability by suppressing the coke formation. The propane conversion could reach up to 53% at 600 °C under a current density of 90 mA cm −2 . The LSNT catalyst also shows excellent tolerance for the sulfur contaminant in commercial propane gas. Finally, the excellent performance of the LSNT catalyst is attributed to the highly active and selective Ni species at the interface with the perovskite substrate, which are formed in situ via reduction-induced exsolution under reaction conditions.

A highly oxygen reduction reaction active and CO 2 durable high-entropy cathode for solid oxide fuel cells

One big obstacle for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrode in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is the poor reaction activity and fast degradations caused by CO 2 poisoning. Here, in this study, we report our design of an active A-site Ca-rich high-entropy Pr 0.1875 Ba 0.1875 Sr 0.1875 La 0.1875 Ca 0.25 CoO 3-δ (PBSLC 25 C) electrode, guided by the O p-band theory. Here, when applied as a cathode in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), it demonstrates high ORR activity and excellent CO 2 tolerance under realistic operating conditions. Ni-YSZ-based anode-supported cells with PBSLC 25 C cathodes demonstrate excellent peak power densities of 1.14 W cm -2 , 1.04 W cm -2 , and 0.77 W cm -2 in the air with 1%, 5%, and 10% CO 2 , respectively, at 750 °C. The engineered high-entropy PBSLC 25 C effectively diminishes the CO 2 poisoning effect and maintains active surfaces for fast oxygen exchange, as confirmed by the cell durability test in air containing CO 2 (5 and 10 vol%), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations.

Mesoporous, multi-valent tungsten oxide with high surface area (209 m 2 /g) is synthesized via a novel metal dissolution coupled with reverse micelle formation approach. Mesoporous tungsten oxide with highest surface area reported is obtained by this method. The material is used as an excellent heterogeneous catalyst for the oxidation of organosulfur compounds present in crude oil. The complete oxidation of dibenzothiophene was observed with excellent yield (>99%) within 15 min at room temperature (20 °C). The catalyst is reusable up to 5 reaction cycles without losing significant activity. A green oxidant, H 2 O 2 is used and the reaction mechanism involves the activation of peroxo species by W 6+ . The oxidation activity decreases in the order of DBT > 4,6-DMDBT > 1-BT due to the changes in the electronic environment of sulfur and steric effects.

Manipulating cobalt oxide on N-doped aligned electrospun carbon nanofibers towards instant electrochemical detection of dopamine secreted by living cells

A demand exists for the development of miniaturized biosensors with high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range for rapid detecting dopamine (DA) levels. Here, an electrochemical sensor is created by decorating closely packed cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ) nanograins on nitrogen-doped electrospun carbon nanofibers (NECNFs) via a facile electrodeposition method. The carbon nanofiber matrix provides both a scaffold with ultrahigh surface area for homogeneous dispersion of cobalt oxide nanostructures and facilitates the electrochemical conductivity for the hybrid electrode. The sensing principle is based on the redox reaction between DA and DA quinone that generates electrical signal, which is detectable via differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and chronoamperometry (CA). Owing to a high electroactive surface area and facilitating electron transfer between electrode surface and the target molecule, the electrical sensing platform exhibits superior sensitivity and selectivity toward DA, with an excellent limit of detection (9 nM) over a wide range of concentrations (0.01 to 100 μM). Moreover, based on its excellent sensing properties and biocompatibility, the sensor has been used for the real-time monitoring exogeneous DA released from pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. This work demonstrates promise of a novel sensor technology that may render rapid point-of-care testing of DA towards early clinical diagnosis.

Keratin-derived functional carbon with superior charge storage and transport for high-performance supercapacitors

In this work, we report a scalable method to synthesize hierarchically porous, hetero-atom doped activated carbon nanosheet from waste biomass-human hair, and demonstrates the use of this carbon as an ultra-high performance electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Microscopic analyses reveal that sheet size ranges from 50 to 200 nm having a thickness of 15–27 nm. As-synthesized, carbon nanosheets possess a hierarchical porous structure having a specific surface area of 1548 m 2 g -1 . Heteroatom concentration (nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur) of around 25% is confirmed from XPS analysis. Therefore, the novel interconnected hierarchical porous nanosheets structure enables fast adsorption and transportation of ions during electrochemical processes. Also, the abundant chemically available electroactive heteroatom species in the material enhance the wettability of ions and contribute to pseudocapacitance. The electrochemical analyses through cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements in 6 M KOH reveal the quasi-EDLC behavior of the activated carbons due to the presence of heteroatoms. A reprensentative KOH activated carbon shows an excellent specific capacitance value of 999 F g -1 at a current density of 1 A g -1 . Furthermore, the symmetrically assembled two-electrode device also delivers a maximum energy density of 32 W h Kg -1 at a power density of 325 W Kg -1 . In addition, excellent cyclic stability of 98% capacitance retention is observed after 10,000 continuous GCD cycles even at a high current density of 5 A g -1 . Symmetric flexible supercapacitor device using KOH-PVA-K3FeCN6 as redox gel polymer electrolyte shows a synergistic specific capacitance of 145 mF cm -1 at a current density of 0.8 mA cm -1 exhibiting very less deviation in bending mode. Therefore, this waste biomass derived heteroatom doped hierarchical porous carbon nanosheets can be a promising material for cost-effective high- performance supercapacitor.

Terahertz-polarizing effect based on geometric anisotropy of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their unique properties, such as thinness and excellent electronic properties. The inherent anisotropy of 2D nanomaterials, which is characterized by their high aspect ratio, can maximize the directional functionality to enhance the conductivity and utilization of edges. Here, we demonstrate how to utilize the edges of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) MXene nanosheet to control the linear polarization in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. By a simple and unique vertical alignment exploiting the high surface charge and excellent colloidal dispersibility of MXene nanosheets, MXene nanosheets are vertically oriented along an applied AC electric field. The well-aligned edges justify the THz polarizing effect, revealing outstanding performances such as the broadband coverage in 0.2–1.5 THz and an exceptional extinction ratio reaching 20 dB. Furthermore, we vary the local orientation of the vertical MXene nanosheets by tailoring the applied electric field, enabling spatially controllable polarization capabilities. Our results can provide a generic tool for the utilization of 2D nanomaterials in diverse potential applications in optics and electronics.

Strain dependent electronic and optical responses of penta-BCN monolayer

We report here, structural, dynamic, and mechanical stability in pentagonal boron carbon nitride (p-BCN) monolayer, a new member of direct bandgap two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor. The identified visible range bandgap with excellent mechanical strength allows it to be a promising candidate material in optoelectronics, nanomechanics, and optomechanical sensors. By employing density functional theory (DFT), we reveal a unique geometrical reconstruction with rigidity in B–N and C–N bond lengths with applied strain. These quasi-sp 3 hybridized short and strong covalent bonding and unique geometry support the monolayer to possess extraordinary mechanical response. The desired bandgap is manipulated by loading the biaxial strain. Most importantly, our predictions on p-BCN show excellent optical response such as good static dielectric constant and refractive index, strong optical absorption (up to 1.08 x 10 5 cm -1 in VR and 7.01 x 10 cm -1 in UV) with small energy loss and reflectance both appearing in visible and ultraviolet regions (UV). The desired optical response along with the blue and red shift is demonstrated by tailoring with tensile and compressive strain. The predicted strong optical anisotropy provides it’s application in polarized photodetection.

Microwave-assisted depolymerization of PET over heterogeneous catalysts

The accumulation of plastic waste in the environment is rising and poses a significant environmental and health threat. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), used mainly in single-use plastic bottles, accounts for a substantial fraction of this waste. The currently employed recycling strategies are inadequate to deal with the global plastic waste problem. PET glycolysis is a promising depolymerization method but has mainly been conducted using homogeneous catalysts; developing active and sustainable catalysts, and more energy-efficient processes remain challenges. Here, in this work, we implement microwave heating in PET glycolysis and identify ZnO as an excellent heterogeneous catalyst. We demonstrate the influence of ZnO's particle size and facet and hydrogen bonding on its activity. Finally, we demonstrate excellent performance for real-world post-consumer PET waste deconstruction with rapid depolymerization into bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET), achieving > 95% yields in less than 10 min. Cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment also indicates that BHET produced by ZnO-catalyzed glycolysis has lower global warming potential than the petrochemical-based production and homogeneously-catalyzed glycolysis.

N-doped honeycomb-like porous carbon towards high-performance supercapacitor

Biomass-derived porous carbon with developed pore structure is critical to achieving high performance electrode materials. In this work, we report a grape-based honeycomb-like porous carbon (GHPC) prepared by KOH activation and carbonization, followed by N-doping (NGHPC). The obtained NGHPC exhibits a unique honeycomb-like structure with hierarchically interconnected micro/mesopores, and high specific surface area of 1268 m2/g. As a supercapacitor electrode, the NGPHC electrode exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 275 F/g at 0.5 A/g in a three-electrode cell. Moreover, the NGHPC//NGHPC symmetric supercapacitor displays a high energy density of 12.6 Wh/kg, and excellent cycling stability of approximately 95.2% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g. The excellent electrochemical performance of NGHPC is ascribed to its high specific surface area, honeycomb-like structure and high-content of pyrodinic-N (36.29%). It is believed that grape-based carbon materials show great potential as advanced electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Cellulose nanofibrils-based packaging films synergistically reinforced by lignin and tea polyphenols for strawberry preservation

Developing biomass-based food packaging materials could alleviate resource scarcity and environmental pollution. Here, this study successfully fabricated cellulose nanofibrils-based packaging films synergistically reinforced by lignin and tea polyphenols for fruit preservation. Thanks to the abundant carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in modified lignin and tea polyphenol, the composite film delivered the highest tensile strength and Young’s modulus of 230.7 MPa and 11.9 GPa, respectively. The water vapor permeability (WVP) and oxygen permeability (OP) of composite film were as low as 2.53 × 10 –11 gm –1 s –1 Pa –1 and 1.69 × 10 –16 cm m –2 s–1 Pa –1 , respectively, demonstrating excellent barrier performance. Furthermore, the composite film possessed remarkable antibacterial (100 % antibacterial activity against two types of bacteria), antioxidant (DPPH free radical scavenging activity of 90 %), and UV shielding properties (impressive UV shielding rate of 99.0 %). Strawberry preservation experiments showed that these composite films could significantly extend shelf life, owing to the excellent barrier and antimicrobial properties. Our research indicated that these composite films could be promising food packaging material compared with traditional plastic and showed great application potential in fruit preservation.

Gas-solid reaction-based selective lithium leaching strategy for efficient LiFePO 4 recycling

As the electric-vehicle market continues to expand, LiFePO 4 (LFP) batteries, valued for their intrinsic safety and cost-effectiveness, are being increasingly utilized. However, this widespread adoption highlights the urgent need for innovative and environmentally friendly recycling methods for spent LFP batteries due to their relatively low material value and the environmental challenges associated with traditional recycling processes. Here, in this study, we present a novel selective lithium leaching technique that involves a gas–solid reaction with chlorine gas. This method achieves a remarkable leaching efficiency of 99.8 % and a selectivity of 98.8 % at 200 °C within just 10 min, without generating acidic wastewater. The resulting LiCl solution was successfully converted into Li 2 CO 3 with an excellent purity of 99.5 %, while producing NaCl solution as the only byproduct. Notably, the olivine structure of the LFP was preserved as FePO 4 after lithium leaching. The regenerated LFP demonstrated excellent performance, retaining 94.1 % of its capacity after 150 cycles, while the lithium-leached FePO 4 delivered a reversible capacity exceeding 150 mAh/g. This approach not only enhances the efficiency of LFP recycling but also paves the way for more sustainable battery technologies.

Development and characteristics of ultra high-performance lightweight cementitious composites (UHP-LCCs)

Highlights: • An ultra high-performance lightweight cementitious composite (UHP-LCC) was designed. • The UHP-LCCs had ultra high strength (>120 MPa) and very low density (3 ). • The UHP-LCCs had high structural efficiency, good functional properties and superior durability. • The strategies and mechanisms on achieving UHP-LCCs with excellent performance were proposed. High strength and light weight are two recent opposite development trends of concrete. This study proposed a design concept of an ultra high-performance lightweight cementitious composite (UHP-LCC), which had a compressive strength of higher than 120 MPa and an air-dried density down to around 1800 kg/m{sup 3}. The UHP-LCCs were innovatively developed by incorporating micro-sized hollow particles with a high strength shell (hollow glass microspheres, HGM) into an ultra-high performance cementitious composite (UHPC). The roles of HGM in the UHP-LCCs were investigated by evaluating the reactivity of the HGM and the mechanisms on achieving the excellent mechanical properties, low density and superior durability were revealed. The Chapelle test results showed that the HGM exhibited some pozzolanic reactivity, which facilitated the reaction between the shell of HGM and the alkali hydration products of the paste matrix. This chemical reaction was conducive to improving the HGM-paste interface and enhancing the mechanical properties. With the use of microspheres with a high stiff shell, the fundamental properties of the UHP-LCCs including thermal insulation, sound absorption, resistance to water ingress and electrical resistivity were improved significantly. The strategies for preparing the UHP-LCCs with high structural efficiency and great performance were proposed. The results of this study provide a new approach for designing and producing a lightweight UHPC, which would be a promising material for long-span structures.

Engineering PHL7 for Improved Poly(Ethylene Terephthalate) Depolymerization via Rational Design and Directed Evolution

Enzymatic depolymerization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has emerged as a promising approach for polyester recycling, and, to date, many natural and engineered PET hydrolase enzymes have been reported. For industrial use, PET hydrolases must achieve high depolymerization extent and exhibit excellent thermostability. Here, we engineered a natural PET hydrolase, Polyester Hydrolase Leipzig #7 (PHL7), through rational design and directed evolution using a high-throughput screening platform. Four new enzymes were engineered with enhanced properties compared with the parent enzyme, wild-type PHL7 (PHL7-WT), and other benchmark PET hydrolases, under the tested conditions. In bioreactors, the exemplary engineered enzyme, PHL7-Jemez, exhibited improved ability to depolymerize amorphous PET film compared with PHL7-WT at 2.9% and 20% substrate loadings, with 37% and 270% higher hydrolysis, respectively, after 48 h. This study develops several state-of-the-art PET hydrolases and demonstrates a directed evolution platform to engineer high-performance enzymes, which can accelerate enzyme discovery toward improved biocatalytic recycling.

Vapor-phase self-assembly for generating thermally stable single-atom catalysts

Preparation of thermally stable metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a challenge in heterogeneous catalysis, especially on conventional supports that provide a weak metal-support interaction. In this work, we report that a modified support MgAl 2 O 4 can stabilize Pt single atoms by a mechanism of vapor-phase self-assembly in a high-temperature treatment (800°C, air). The experimental results on the formation mechanism and the structure are validated by DFT and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We infer that stable triangular K 3 O 3 structures help stabilize Pt single atoms at high temperatures in oxidizing conditions, exhibiting excellent reactivity for methane oxidation. The obtained Pt/K/MgAl 2 O 4 SAC presents excellent stability in methane oxidation after steam treatment at elevated temperatures, whereas the Pt/MgAl 2 O 4 nanocatalyst suffers from rapid deactivation due to Pt nanoparticle growth. Now this work paves the way for preparing thermally stable and highly active SACs using conventional high-surface-area supports, despite the weak metal-support interaction.

A comparative study of mechanical and chemical durability of non-wetting superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused surfaces

Fabrication of bioinspired non-wetting superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) and lubricant-infused surfaces (LIS) has been studied extensively on a variety of materials. In contrast, durability of the surfaces exposed to harsh mechanical and chemical environments has been the subject of little attention. This study considers the mechanical and chemical durability of SHS and LIS copper surfaces fabricated via facile electrodeposition and chemical etching methods. The as-fabricated surfaces demonstrate excellent non-wetting characteristics with water contact angle of 160° and sliding angle below 5°. The surfaces are subject to mechanical wear through scratch test and water jet impingement at 15 psi and 20 psi as well as accelerated corrosion following the ASTM-E407 standard. The performance of the electrodeposited and etched non-wetting surfaces is systematically assessed in terms of contact and sliding angles and corrosion rate in a simulated marine environment. All surfaces are shown to be robust to mechanical wear after scratch test, with excellent stability of contact and sliding angles, and up to two orders of magnitude reduced corrosion rate compared to bare copper surface. SHS retained steadfast non-wetting characteristics under high-pressure water jet tests compared to the other surfaces while LIS, regardless of texturing method, showed one to two orders of magnitude reduced corrosion rate compared to bare copper surface throughout water jet impingement and chemical durability tests. The study presents for the first time a systematic comparison of durability of SHS and LIS through a common set of fabrication and testing protocol and helps identify appropriate non-wetting surfaces and fabrication methods based on the use environment.

Machine learning-enabled prediction of chemical durability of A 2 B 2 O 7 pyrochlore and fluorite

Pyrochlore-structure type and its derivative in a general formula A 2 B 2 O 7 (A = rare earth elements and actinides; B = Ti, Sn, Zr, Hf, Pb, Si, etc.) display excellent structural flexibility and rich crystal chemistry as promising nuclear waste form materials capable of immobilizing actinides and fission products. It is essential to understand these materials’ chemical durability and element release of radionuclides in order to evaluate their performance in near-field environment. However, it is a formidable grand technological challenge to experimentally perform durability testing across hundreds of thousands of possibilities resulting from their extreme compositional complexities due to cation substitutions at both A and B-sites. In this work, we demonstrate a machine learning approach to determine the key materials parameters and structural characteristics governing the leaching behaviors from a small set of selected compositions as model systems, enabling a science-based prediction of their chemical durability that can be extended to a wide range of chemical compositions. The combination of four key structural characteristics and materials parameters, including ionic radius size difference , ionic potential difference , electronegativity difference , and lattice parameter , creates features an optimized prediction of the chemical durability. Two machine learning models, linear regression and Kernel ridge regression models, are trained on the randomly-split training dataset derived from the experimentally-determined elemental release rates, and subsequently tested on the testing dataset. The predicted leaching rates from both machine learning models show an excellent agreement with the experimental data, demonstrating the feasibility of rapidly evaluating the material properties of new compositions. These results highlight the immense potential of synergizing informatics through machine learning-based models and well-controlled experiments of selected model systems to accelerate materials design and discovery with optimized compositions and performance of promising materials for effective nuclear waste management.

Dual-ion ECRAM as a stable and accurate analog synapse

Electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) works by tuning the bulk electronic conductance of functional materials via reversible, electrochemical insertion of ions, resulting in stable analog resistive switching, attractive for analog in-memory and neuromorphic computing. However, achieving fast programming for training and long retention for inference has been elusive. Protonic ECRAM demonstrates fast programming but insufficient retention, while oxygen-based ECRAM with excellent retention requires elevated programming temperatures. Cu-based ECRAM offers a compromise, with an activation energy (E A ) of ≈0.76 eV between protons (E A ≈ 0.4 eV) and oxygen (E A > 1 eV), enabling extensive retention and room temperature programming. Combining Cu 2+ ions with protons to form a dual-ion ECRAM, we demonstrate two distinct switching behaviors: fast switching at ≤5 V, (E A ≈ 0.45 eV) via protons, and nonvolatile, room temperature switching at ≥8 V, with E A ≈ 0.76 eV via Cu 2+ ions. In conclusion, the Cu-based state exhibits a wide conductance range, with excellent retention, low noise, and linear current-voltage behavior, achieving digital-equivalent ImageNet inference accuracy.
