A Spacelab Expert System for Remote Engineering and Science

NASA's space science program is based on strictly pre-planned activities. This approach does not always result in the best science. We describe an existing computer system that enables space science to be conducted in a more reactive manner through advanced automation techniques that have recently been used in SLS-2 October 1993 space shuttle flight. Advanced computing techniques, usually developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence, allow large portions of the scientific investigator's knowledge to be "packaged" in a portable computer to present advice to the astronaut operator. We strongly believe that this technology has wide applicability to other forms of remote science/engineering. In this brief article, we present the technology of remote science/engineering assistance as implemented for the SLS-2 space shuttle flight. We begin with a logical overview of the system (paying particular attention to the implementation details relevant to the use of the embedded knowledge for system reasoning), then describe its use and success in space, and conclude with ideas about possible earth uses of the technology in the life and medical sciences.

National Educators' Workshop: Update 2003. Standard Experiments in Engineering, Materials Science, and Technology

The 18th Annual National Educators Workshop [NEW:Update 2003] was a part of NASA Langley s celebration of the Centennial of Controlled, Powered Flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright on December 17, 1903. The conference proceedings from NEW:Update 2003 reflect the Flight 100 theme by first providing a historic perspective on the remarkable accomplishments of the Wright Brothers. The historical perspective set the stag for insights into aeronautics and aerospace structures and materials now and into the future. The NEW:Update 2003 proceedings provide valuable resources to educators and students in the form of visuals, experiments and demonstrations for classes/labs at levels ranging from precollege through college education.

STEM Careers Are Out of This World--No Need to Fear Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math

At NASA, we fully support the President's Educate to Innovate Program in the hopes that American students move from the middle of the pack to the top in the next decade; and that we are expanding STEM education and career opportunities for underrepresented groups, including minorities and females. The first goal we have implemented to help accomplish this is to Strengthen NASA and the Nation's future workforce - Many of you in the audience could be our potential workforce, and the co-op and intern program at NASA is helping students like you. The second goal is to Attract and retain students in STEM disciplines-To compete effectively for the minds, imaginations and career ambitions of young people like you, throughout NASA, we regularly send educators and NASA speakers into classrooms to work directly with you, encouraging you to follow in the footsteps of NASA engineers and scientists. The Third goal is to Engage Americans in NASA's mission- To get young people involved in NASA's mission, we have many exciting programs for college students like the Lunabotics Mining Competition and the Cubes Satellites sent to space

Recommendations on Future Science and Engineering Studies for Ocean Color

The Ocean Health Index measured Ecological Integrity as the relative condition of assessed species in a given location. This was calculated as the weighted sum of the International Union for Conservation of Natures (IUCN) assessments of species. Weights used were based on the level of extinction risk following Butchart et al.2007: EX (extinct) 0.0, CR (critically endangered) 0.2, EN (endangered) 0.5, VU (vulnerable) 0.7, NT (not threatened) 0.9, and LC (least concern) 0.99. For primarily coastal goals, the spatial average of these per pixel scores was based on a 3nmi buffer; for goals derived from all ocean waters, the spatial average was computed for the entire EEZ.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics Poster

This is a simple poster for Community Day at the Visitor Center. It describes, as an overview, an example of the use of GPS and LiDAR data to determine the loss of scrubjay habitat due to a change in water table.
