An agent-based deployment decision-support system for electric vehicle services

METS-R ADDSEVS simulator is a high fidelity, parallel, agent-based evacuation simulator for multi-modal energy-optimal trip scheduling in real-time (METS-R) at transportation hubs. It consists of two modules. The first one is the traffic simulator module; the second one is the high-performance computing (HPC) module. More details can be found at https://umnilab.github.io/METS-R_doc/.

Report of the Condition of a General Electric Transportation Systems Gearbox

Wind power plant operations and maintenance (O&M) costs remain an appreciable contributor to the overall cost of wind energy. Premature of wind turbine gearboxes failures are often a result of abrasive wear, micropitting, scuffing, white-etch cracks, and macropitting issues. Micropitting is a fatigue phenomenon that occurs in Hertzian contacts in both gears and rolling-element bearings that operate in mixed or micro elastohydrodynamic lubrication regimes. Micropitting is influenced by and manifests itself in many different ways depending on operating conditions such as load, speed and operating temperature, and on factors such as gear geometry and accuracy, tooth flank roughness, percentage of tooth sliding, and lubricant composition. Despite much research by many investigators, micropitting remains complex, unpredictable, and difficult to control and remains a problem in wind turbine gearboxes. The purpose of this report is to document and describe the micropitting damage observed in a wind turbine gearbox, thereby facilitating further analysis and examination in future reports.

Insights on Wind Turbine Maintenance From the Usage History of a General Electric Transportation Systems Gearbox

Recently, micropitting that occurred in a wind turbine gearbox has been used as a case study of the International Organization for Standardization technical specification ISO/TS 6336-22. This technical specification contains a proposed calculation of risk of micropitting in gear sets, in terms of a safety factor based on the ratio of the minimum to the permissible specific lubricant film thickness. This report summarizes the operational history of the micropitted gearbox for future case studies.

Improving Transparency in Electric Distribution System Planning to Support Affordability [Slides]

This resource identifies opportunities for communities to participate in the distribution system planning process to achieve their energy goals, including affordability. It begins with background information on the distribution system and distribution system planning, and then focuses on topical areas where communities could focus their engagement (e.g., non-wires alternatives, DER forecast, scenario analysis). The report concludes with illustrative examples of how communities have engaged in distribution system planning. The appendix provides procedural guidance on engagement in utility planning processes.

Electricity and Gas IDS Dataset

The following dataset was collected from a set of cybersecurity experiments conducted in an Electricity and Natural Gas environment. The architecture was instantiated within the powerNET testbed at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and is comprised of both simulated components and hardware-in-the-loop devices. The test environment consisted of a substation and control center network representative of electrical systems. In addition, it also contained a compressor station, and an odorizer and pressure regulation station representative of oil and natural gas systems. The various devices on the electrical and gas systems were organized into multiple networks to mimic real-world deployments. There were 14 testing scenarios overall that covered a wide variety of cybersecurity and infrastructure events.

Resilience Assessment Framework For Electric Distribution Systems Performance Under Extreme Conditions

The devastating impact of extreme weather-related events is increasingly evident on power grids, especially on distribution grids. The severity of their potential impact calls for 1) developing a suitable resilience assessment framework to capture the system performance and 2) assessing relevant mitigative strategies to lessen the impact of such events. This paper proposes a framework to identify grid vulnerabilities using the energy-at-risk concept to select, disconnect and isolate grid portions due to a resilience event. The proposed framework mainly consists of two steps; i) processing the utility's available infrastructure, i.e., a network model, possible switching combinations, and outage information for those combinations, as a graph-based database, and ii) implementing a novel optimal switching algorithm leveraging database and grid simulated metrics. These switching actions are generated to implement load curtailment in a rolling manner during anticipated grid scarcity conditions. In this study, a test case is created using two taxonomy feeders and is simulated against an extreme temperature event, e.g., a long, relatively cold, and prolonged freeze peak, thereby creating stress on the grid. It is demonstrated that the proposed framework allows utilities to predict the energy-at-risk during such resilience events and design suitable outage management strategies.

Event analysis in an electric power system

According to some embodiments, system and methods are provided including receiving, via a communication interface of an event detection and classification module comprising a processor, data from one or more sensors in a system; determining an event occurred based on the received data; applying a coherency similarity process to the received data via a classification module; determining whether the event is an actual event or a mal-doer event based on an output of the classification module; transmitting the determination of the event as the actual or the mal-doer event; and modifying operation of the system based on the transmitted output. Numerous other aspects are provided.
