NO sub X destruction by CO in NO sub X to NO converters of chemiluminescent NO analyzers

An instrument modification for chemiluminescent NO - NOx analyzers was developed which minimizes the NOx destruction in the NOx to NO converters of NO analyzers due to high concentrations of CO. This mechanism causes the NO analyzers to indicate incorrect NOx concentrations when the analyzers are operated in the NOx analysis mode. The modification is applicable to analyzers in which the detection chamber is evacuated.

Production of a large, quiescent, magnetized plasma

An experimental device is described which produces a large homogeneous quiescent magnetized plasma. In this device, the plasma is created in an evacuated brass cylinder by ionizing collisions between electrons emitted from a large-diameter electron gun and argon atoms in the chamber. Typical experimentally measured values of the electron temperature and density are presented which were obtained with a glass-insulated planar Langmuir probe. It is noted that the present device facilitates the study of phenomena such as waves and diffusion in magnetized plasmas.

Reduction of losses in low-frequency /2 MHz/ surface-wave delay line by outgassing

Surface waves are attenuated by a fluid or gas surrounding the surface of propagation, an effect caused by frictional losses determined by the fluid or gas viscosity and by the emission of compression waves into the environment. The paper reports a large reversible reduction in attenuation of surface waves at frequencies as low as 2 MHz by outgassing treatments of some materials, suggesting that at such frequencies vacuum encapsulation is a desirable procedure. Outgassing experiments were performed on a delay line constructed from high-density p.z.t.-8 (lead-zirconate-titanate). The delay line configuration was a slab waxed onto a metal base with coaxial connectors mounted near and connected by gold-wire leads to the interdigital finger sets. Output signal enhancements by as much as 8 dB were achieved after overnight evacuation at 10 to the -2 torr at room temperature.

Evaluation of flat-plate collector efficiency under controlled conditions in a solar simulator

The measured thermal efficiencies of 35 collectors tested with a solar simulator, along with the correlation equations used to generalize the data, are presented. The single correlation used is shown to apply to all the different types of collectors tested, including one with black paint and one cover, one with a selective surface coating and two covers, and an evacuated-tube collector. The test and correlation technique is also modified by using a shield so that collectors larger than the simulator test area can also be tested. This technique was verified experimentally for a shielded collector for which the collector shielded area was 31% of the solar simulator radiation area. A table lists all the collectors tested, the collector areas, and the experimental constants used to correlate the data for each collector.

Low-gravity processing of superconducting compounds

Low gravity conditions can be sustained on earth for several seconds in an evacuated drop tube. Because radiation cooling is most effective at high temperatures, the refractive metals and alloys are prime candidates for free fall solidification. The results of initial experiments on droplet formation, droplet release, critical size and evaporation losses are given. The time required for free fall solidification of different size droplets is calculated. The materials studied were copper, niobium and vanadium, and a niobium-tin alloys. Improvements in purity, composition, homogeneity and stoichiometry are expected during free fall solidification of niobium based alloys which should become evident in an increase in the superconducting transition temperature.

International Conference on Remote Emergency Medical Services

An emergency medical system is characterized. Applications of NASA technology in biomedical telecommunication and bioinstrumentation are explored. The training and effectiveness of paramedics, technicians, nurses, and physicians are evaluated as applied to emergency situations and the operations of trauma centers. Civilian and military aeromedical evacuation is discussed.

Toward a second generation fuel efficient supersonic cruise aircraft

Design changes that lead to improved aerodynamic and structural efficiency are presented. Practical design constraints and approaches for a blended wing-fuselage are discussed, as well as the integration of the configuration that leads to aerodynamic and structural efficiency. Highlighted are new approaches used to provide for structural efficiency, airline/passenger acceptance, passenger evacuation, and subsystem integration. Results of full-scale passenger cabin mock-up evaluations are presented showing the feasibility of the concept.

Fixed flat plate collector with a reversible vee-trough concentrator

An asymmetrical-reversible vee-trough concentrator for use both with nonevacuated and evacuated receivers is proposed in order to improve the performance of a fixed flat plate collector. The device is capable of maintaining a year-round concentration factor of about 2 while eliminating the complications of the tilt adjustments of the collector box assembly. Efficiency improvements and cost reductions for temperatures of about 100 and 200 C are offered for the nonvacuum and vacuum tube versions, respectively. A major advantage of the vee-trough is the enhancement of the incident flux, thus extending the collection period. The vacuum collector is suitable for supplying heat to solar Rankine systems, while the nonvacuum version can be used for air conditioning purposes via an absorption air conditioner.

Basic coaxial mass driver reference design

The reference design for a basic coaxial mass driver is developed to illustrate the principles and optimization procedures on the basis of numerical integration by programmable pocket calculators. The four inch caliber system uses a single-coil bucket and a single-phase propulsion track with discrete coils, separately energized by capacitors. An actual driver would use multiple-coil buckets and an oscillatory multi-phase drive system. Even the basic, table-top demonstration system should in principle be able to achieve accelerations in the 1,000 m/sq sec range. Current densities of the order of 25 ka/sq cm, continuously achievable only in superconductors, are carried by an ordinary aluminum bucket coil for a short period in order to demonstrate the calculated acceleration. Ultimately the system can be lengthened and provided with a magnetically levitated, superconducting bucket to study levitation dynamics under quasi-steady-state conditions, and to approach lunar escape velocity in an evacuated tube.

Physics of an active region loop system

The structure of the active region loops is investigated by the study of a loop complex which undergoes a dramatic evacuation of most of the mass it contains. The need for continual energy deposition in loops is emphasized by the apparent cessation of energy input to the loops studied and their subsequent behavior. Estimates are made of the energy necessary to form and to maintain the loops, and of the relative importance of radiation and thermal conduction as energy loss mechanisms. Models based on the observed EUV emission are used to place limits on the size of loops seen in various lines and on the density and temperature structure. It is found that the cool cores of active region loops are likely to be no more than a few hundred kilometers in radius and that several such cool threads may be imbedded in a common hot outer sheath. The primary energy loss on a large scale is radiation with thermal conduction contributing to local disturbances. There is a tendency for the development of apparently unstable condensations or knots along the length of a loop.

Breather cloth for vacuum curing

Finely-woven nylon cloth that has been treated with Teflon improves vacuum adhesive bonding of coatings to substrates. Cloth is placed over coating; entire assembly, including substrate, coating, and cloth, is placed in plastic vacuum bag for curing. Cloth allows coating to "breathe" when bag is evacuated. Applications include bonding film coatings to solar concentrators and collectors.

Purging means and method for Xenon arc lamps

High pressure Xenon short-arc lamp with two reservoirs which are selectively connectable to the lamp's envelope is described. One reservoir contains an absorbent which will absorb both Xenon and contaminant gases such as CO2 and O2. The absorbent temperature is controlled to evacuate the envelope of both the Xenon and the contaminant gases. The temperature of the absorbent is then raised to desorb only clean Xenon while retaining the contaminant gases, thereby clearing the envelope of the contaminant gases. The second reservoir contains a gas whose specific purpose is, to remove the objectional metal film which deposits gradually on the interior surface of the lamp envelope during normal arc operation. The origin of the film is metal transferred from the cathode of the arc lamp by sputtering or other gas transfer processes.
