Design of Critical Experiments Targeting Epithermal Cross Sections of Tantalum

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are collaborating to develop a capability to test the epithermal/intermediate cross sections of tantalum (Ta) at the SNL critical experiments facility using the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX) fuel. The Sandia Critical Experiments (SCX) Program provides a specialized facility for performing water moderated and reflected critical experiments with UO 2 fuel rod arrays. A history of safe reactor operations and flexibility in reactor core configuration has resulted in the completion of several benchmark critical experiment evaluations that are published in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The critical experiments described here are scheduled to be performed at SCX in fiscal year 2023. Currently, fabrication details for the needed new equipment are being finalized for completion of the procurement process. The experiments will then be executed and documented for publication consideration by the ICSBEP.

Current Progress of the Final Design of a Subcritical Assembly at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory

During the past decade, the US Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) has been coordinating nuclear criticality safety (NCS) courses to provide training and qualification to new staff, supervisors, managers, regulators, and other professionals involved with NCS. To address the growing need for more NCS training possibilities, a subcritical assembly was designed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Oak Ridge Subcritical Assembly (ORSA), operated at ORNL, could be used in a new course for fissile material handlers/operators or as a backup training facility for currently existing NCSP hands-on NCS training. This paper describes some of the design steps necessary for obtaining a final ORSA design, beginning with a successful feasibility study performed in 2020. Numerous parameters within each main element of the assembly were considered, such as the reflector used, the type of fuel coating or plating used, and the number of fuel plates used. The design choices related to each parametric study described in this paper are detailed and justified at the end of each subsection. An overview of the current final design characteristics of ORSA and the experiments’ possibilities is also provided. ORSA will be built with fuel plates from legacy Aerojet General Nucleonics (AGN)-201M research reactors currently stored at the Y-12 National Security Complex (Y-12). The cylindrical fuel plates comprise UO 2 particles embedded in polyethylene and have a nominal enrichment of 19.5 ± 0.5 wt % 235 U. The basis for the final design was the feasibility study from 2020. In the feasibility study, ORSA achieved k eff = 0.95, corresponding to a multiplication factor of 20, with approximately 620 g of 235 U (four 4 cm plates, three 2 cm plates, and two 1 cm plates) and an 8.5 cm thick graphite reflector radially and on top of the assembly. The bottom of the assembly has a graphite thickness of 5 cm, and the chosen graphite density was 2.3 g/cm 3 . All design calculations were performed using SCALE 6.2.4 KENO-VI and with the ENDF/B VII.1 Continuous Energy cross-section library.

Recent SCALE Activities Within the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program

The role of SCALE in the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) is defined according to the Five-Year Plan, and summarized as follows. 1. Sustain/improve SCALE NCS features through user driven enhancements, software quality assurance (SQA) and validation and verification (V&V). 2. Assure adaptability to various computing platforms and compilers. 3. Improve user interfaces/documentation consistent with modern engineering software. 4. Support responsive communication to SCALE criticality safety users through SCALE Newsletters, email notices, and updates on the SCALE website. 5. Modernize software infrastructure and capabilities to improve quality and reliability and to ensure long term sustainability of the NCS capabilities. This paper describes the specific activities which have been performed within each area above for the NCSP in the fiscal year (FY) 2018, from October 1, 2017, to September 30, 2018.

Bias Between ENDF/B-VIII and ENDF/B-VII.1 for LEU Pin Array Systems

Extensive testing of new cross section data is performed in SCALE prior to its release. The release of ENDF/B-VIII.0 requires the generation and testing of new data libraries which are planned to be included in the release of SCALE 6.3 in 2019 or 2020. KENO benchmark results have been published previously for beta and final releases of ENDF/B-VIII.0 using the entire Verified, Archived Library of Inputs and Data (VALID). This work presents an energy-dependent change in the results for low-enriched uranium (LEU) pin array systems. The process of identifying the difference is highlighted as a case study to determine how data testing and benchmarking can be performed to provide more detailed feedback to the data community on potential data deficiencies.

Jupiter: A Proposed Benchmark for Lead Void Worth with Plutonium

In the summer of 2017, a series of measurements were performed at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) in collaboration with the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) to measure the reactivity worth of voids in an array of lead and plutonium. This experiment, called Jupiter, measured multiple configurations of an array of aluminum boxes containing plutonium, aluminum, and lead plates. For some configurations, a selection of the lead interstitial plates were swapped with aluminum spacer frames to create “voids” in the lead interstitial material. Comparing the excess reactivity of the systems provides an empirical value of the lead void reactivity worth. These measurements were part of a larger collaboration to measure lead void reactivity worth with multiple nuclear material types and enrichments. This included other measurement series with both highly-enriched uranium (HEU), and a mixture of HEU and natural uranium to simulate low-enriched uranium (LEU). These data sets will be useful to the JAEA for a potential lead-bismuth cooled accelerator driven system. Additionally, there are not very many benchmarks in the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) handbook sensitive to lead cross sections. Given that lead is widely used as a radiation shield and is part of new reactor designs, having more benchmarks in the ICSBEP handbook to better support cross section validation is important. Additional integral experiments could also aid in determining whether improvements have been made in new lead cross section evaluations. A benchmark evaluation for this experiment is being proposed in order to help fulfill these needs. Such evaluations contain both measured data, results from detailed transport code models, and analyses of the uncertainties associated with each. Examples of these uncertainties include the uncertainty in the measured excess reactivity, the composition of components, or their positioning within the model. This means it is easier to make comparisons between the measured and simulated data and better understand where improvements can be made to nuclear data.
