On the decaying-sterile-neutrino solution to the electron (anti)neutrino appearance anomalies

We explore the hypothesis that the unexplained data from LSND and MiniBooNE are evidence for a new, heavy neutrino mass-eigenstate that mixes with the muon-type neutrino and decays into an electron-type neutrino and a new, very light scalar particle. We consider two different decay scenarios, one with Majorana neutrinos, one with Dirac neutrinos; both fit the data equally well. We find a reasonable, albeit not excellent, fit to the data of MiniBooNE and LSND. The decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis, however, cleanly evades constraints from disappearance searches and precision measurements of leptonic meson decays, as long as $1~{\rm MeV}\gtrsim m_4\gtrsim 10$~keV. The SBN program at Fermilab should be able to definitively test the decaying-sterile-neutrino hypothesis.

Search for CP violation in ${D}_{(s)}^{+}$ → K - K + K + decays

A search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decay \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + and in the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D + → K - K + K + is reported. The analysis is performed with data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb - 1 . The search is conducted by comparing the \( {D}_{(s)}^{+} \) and \( {D}_{(s)}^{-} \) Dalitz-plot distributions through a model-independent binned technique, based on fits to the K - K + K + invariant-mass distributions, with a total of 0.97 (1.27) million \( {D}_s^{+} \) ( D + ) signal candidates. The results are given as p -values for the hypothesis of CP conservation and are found to be 13.3% for the \( {D}_s^{+} \) → K - K + K + decay and 31.6% for the D + → K - K + K + decay. No evidence for CP violation is observed in these decays.

Search for a new scalar resonance in flavour-changing neutral-current top-quark decays $t → qX (q = u, c)$, with $X → b\overline{b} $, in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for flavour-changing neutral-current decays of a top quark into an up-type quark (either up or charm) and a light scalar particle X decaying into a bottom anti-bottom quark pair is presented. The search focuses on top-quark pair production where one top quark decays to qX, with X → $b\bar{b}$, and the other top quark decays according to the Standard Model, with the W boson decaying leptonically. The final state is thus characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. Events are categorised according to the multiplicity of jets and jets tagged as originating from b-quarks, and a neural network is used to discriminate between signal and background processes. The data analysed correspond to 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.019% and 0.062% are derived for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(t → uX) and between 0.018% and 0.078% for the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}$(t → cX), for masses of the scalar particle X between 20 and 160 GeV.

Amplitude analysis of the ${D}_s^{+}$ → π - π + π + decay

A Dalitz plot analysis of the ${D}_s^{+}$ → π - π + π + decay is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at a centre of-mass energy of 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.5 fb -1 . The resonant structure of the decay is obtained using a quasi-model-independent partial-wave analysis, in which the π + π - S-wave amplitude is parameterised as a generic complex function determined by a fit to the data. The S-wave component is found to be dominant, followed by the contribution from spin-2 resonances and a small contribution from spin-1 resonances. The latter includes the first observation of the ${D}_s^{+}$ → ω(782)π + channel in the ${D}_s^{+}$ → π - π + π + decay. The resonant structures of the ${D}_s^{+}$ → π - π + π + and ${D}^{+}$ → π - π + π + decays are compared, providing information about the mechanisms for the hadron formation in these decays.

Search for Higgs boson production at high transverse momentum in the WW decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for Higgs boson (H) production at high transverse momentum (p T ) in the WW decay channel is presented. The analysis uses proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The visible decay products of the Higgs boson are reconstructed as a single large-radius jet with one isolated lepton or none (1ℓ and 0ℓ, respectively; ℓ = e, μ). The H-candidate jets are identified using an advanced transformer-based algorithm and are calibrated with the Lund jet plane reweighting technique. The 1ℓ channel is further split into gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with hadronically decaying vector boson categories, while the 0ℓ channel considers all production processes inclusively. The measured cross section times the H → WW branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation is $\mu =-{0.19}_{-0.46}^{+0.48}$, indicating no evidence of a signal above the background. This measurement represents the first dedicated study of highly Lorentz-boosted H → WW decays, complementing earlier searches for high-p T Higgs boson in other decay channels.

Search for vector-like leptons with long-lived particle decays in the CMS muon system in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{\text{s}}$$ = 13 TeV

Abstract A first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) exclusively decaying into a light long-lived pseudoscalar boson and a standard model τ lepton. The pseudoscalar boson is assumed to have a mass below the τ + τ − threshold, so that it decays exclusively into two photons. It is identified using the CMS muon system. The analysis is carried out using a data set of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1. Selected events contain at least one pseudoscalar boson decaying electromagnetically in the muon system and at least one hadronically decaying τ lepton. No significant excess of data events is observed compared to the background expectation. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the vector-like lepton production cross section as a function of the VLL mass and the pseudoscalar boson mean proper decay length. The observed and expected exclusion ranges of the VLL mass extend up to 700 and 670 GeV, respectively, depending on the pseudoscalar boson lifetime.

Search for a light charged Higgs boson in t → H±b decays, with H± → cb, in the lepton+jets final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a charged Higgs boson, H ± , produced in top-quark decays, t → H ± b, is presented. The search targets H ± decays into a bottom and a charm quark, H ± → cb. The analysis focuses on a selection enriched in top-quark pair production, where one top quark decays into a leptonically decaying W boson and a bottom quark, and the other top quark decays into a charged Higgs boson and a bottom quark. This topology leads to a lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon and at least four jets. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets containing b-hadrons, and deploys a neural network classifier that uses the kinematic differences between the signal and the background. The search uses a dataset of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Observed (expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits between 0.15% (0.09%) and 0.42% (0.25%) are derived for the product of branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$ (t → H ± b) × $\mathscr{B}$(H ± → cb) for charged Higgs boson masses between 60 and 160 GeV, assuming the SM production of the top-quark pairs.

Measurement of CP asymmetries and branching fraction ratios of B – decays to two charm mesons

The CP asymmetries of seven B – decays to two charm mesons are measured using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment. Decays involving a D *0 or ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ meson are analysed by reconstructing only the D 0 or ${D}_s^{-}$ decay products. This paper presents the first measurement of $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{\ast -}$ D 0 ) and $\mathcal{A}$ CP (B – → ${D}_s^{-}$D $\ast$0 ), and the most precise measurement of the other five CP asymmetries. There is no evidence of CP violation in any of the analysed decays. Additionally, two ratios between branching fractions of selected decays are measured.

New physics in multi-electron muon decays

Abstract We study the exotic muon decays with five charged tracks in the final state. First, we investigate the Standard Model rate forμ + → 3e + 2e − 2ν($$ \mathcal{B} $$ B = 4.0 × 10 −10 ) and find that the Mu3e experiment should have tens to hundreds of signal events per 10 15 μ + decays, depending on the signal selection strategy. We then turn to a neutrinolessμ + → 3e + 2e − decay that may arise in new-physics models with lepton-flavor-violating effective operators involving a dark Higgsh d . Following its production inμ + →e + h d decays, the dark Higgs can undergo a decay cascade to twoe + e − pairs through two dark photons,h d → γ d γ d →2(e + e − ). We show that aμ + →3e + 2e − search at the Mu3e experiment, with potential sensitivity to the branching ratio at the$$ \mathcal{O} $$ O (10 −12 ) level or below, can explore new regions of parameter space and new physics scales as high as Λ ∼ 10 15 GeV.

Testing claims of the GW170817 binary neutron star inspiral affecting β-decay rates

On August 17, 2017, the first gravitational wave signal from a binary neutron star inspiral (GW170817) was detected by Advanced LIGO and Advanced VIRGO. Here we present radioactive β-decay rates of three independent sources 44 Ti, 60 Co and 137 Cs, monitored during the same period by a precision experiment designed to investigate the decay of long-lived radioactive sources. We do not find any significant correlations between decay rates in a 5 h time interval following the GW170817 observation. This contradicts a previous claim published in this journal of an observed 2.5σ Pearson Correlation between fluctuations in the number of observed decays from two β-decaying isotopes ( 32 Si and 36 Cl) in the same time interval. By correcting for the choice of an arbitrary time interval, we find no evidence of a correlation above 1.5σ confidence. In addition, we argue that such analyses on correlations in arbitrary time intervals should always correct for the so-called Look-Elsewhere effect by quoting the global significance.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=167 Isobars

Experimental nuclear spectroscopic data are compiled and evaluated for 17 known nuclides of mass 167 (Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt), 23 years after the previous full evaluation by 2000Ba65. Detailed information is presented for each reaction and decay experiment. Combining all the available data, recommended values are provided for energies, spins and parities, and half-lives of levels, with energies, branching ratios and multipolarities of γ radiations, and characteristics of β and α radiations in radioactive decays. Here, the α decays of A=171 nuclei to A=167 daughters are included in this work, while for α decays of A=167 nuclei to A=163 daughters, consult Nuclear Data Sheets (2010Re03) or the ENSDF database for A=163. 167 Er, 167 Tm, 167 Yb, 167 Lu and 167 Ta are among the most extensively studied nuclides via decay and high-spin gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements, followed by 167 Ho, 167 Hf, 167 W, and 167 Os. Information for excited states in 167 Dy, 167 Re, and 167 Ir are limited; no excited states have yet been identified in 167 Sm, 167 Eu, 167 Gd, 167 Tb and 167 Pt, with the ground-state half-life of 167 Sm remaining unknown. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation of A=167 nuclei by 2000Ba65.

Search for the rare decay of the W boson into a pion and a photon in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$=13TeV

A search is performed for the rare decay W ± → π ± γ in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV . Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb - 1 were collected during 2016 to 2018 with the CMS detector. This analysis exploits a novel search strategy based on W boson production in top quark pair events. An inclusive search for the W ± → π ± γ decay is not optimal at the LHC because of the high trigger thresholds. Instead, a trigger selection is exploited in which the W boson originating from one of the top quarks is used to tag the event in a leptonic decay. The W boson emerging from the other top quark is used to search for the W ± → π ± γ signature. Such decays are characterized by an isolated track pointing to a large energy deposit, and by an isolated photon of large transverse momentum. The presence of b quark jets reduces the background from the hadronization of light-flavor quarks and gluons. The W ± → π ± γ decay is not observed. An upper exclusion limit is set to this branching fraction, corresponding to 1.50 × 10 - 5 at 95% confidence level, whereas the expected upper exclusion limit is 0.85 - 0.29 + 0.52 × 10 - 5 .

Search for W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark at s=13TeV in the hadronic final state

A search is performed for W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . Deep neural network algorithms are used to identify the jet initiated by the bottom quark and the jet containing the decay products of the top quark when the W' boson from the top quark decays hadronically. No excess above the estimated standard model background is observed. Upper limits on the production cross sections of W' bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark are set. Both left- and right-handed W' bosons with masses below 3.4 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, and the most stringent limits to date on W bosons decaying to a top and a bottom quark in the all-hadronic final state are obtained.

Search for a new heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A first search at the LHC for a new heavy resonance decaying to a top quark and a neutral scalar boson ϕ in the fully hadronic final state is presented, where the ϕ boson is identified by its decay into a bottom quark-antiquark pair. The search is focused on final states in which the decay products of the highly Lorentz boosted top quark and ϕ boson are each reconstructed as a single, large-radius jet with distinct substructure. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2016–2018. The single production of a vector-like top quark, T′, is used as a benchmark model for the signal process. The results of this search are combined with those of a previous CMS search in which semileptonic decays of the top quark were used. No significant excess of data is observed with respect to the background prediction. For the case where the neutral scalar is a standard model Higgs boson and the T′ quark width is 5% of its mass, T′ quark masses between 0.85 and 1.3 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level and the most stringent limits to date are set for masses above 2 TeV . For other ϕ boson masses, upper limits as low as 0.1 fb are set on the product of the T′ quark production cross section and branching fraction for its decay to a top quark and a ϕ boson.

Experimental Evidence of Dioxole Unimolecular Decay Pathway for Isoprene-Derived Criegee Intermediates

Ozonolysis of isoprene, one of the most abundant volatile organic compounds emitted into the Earth’s atmosphere, generates two four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediates, methyl vinyl ketone oxide (MVK-oxide) and methacrolein oxide (MACR-oxide). The extended conjugation between the vinyl substituent and carbonyl oxide groups of these Criegee intermediates facilitates rapid electrocyclic ring closures that form 5-membered cyclic peroxides, known as dioxoles. This research discusses the first experimental evidence of this novel decay pathway, which is predicted to be the dominant atmospheric sink for specific conformational forms of MVK-oxide (anti) and MACR-oxide (syn) with the vinyl substituent adjacent to the terminal O atom. The resulting dioxoles are predicted to undergo rapid unimolecular decay to oxygenated hydrocarbon radical products, including acetyl, vinoxy, formyl, and 2-methyl-vinoxy radicals. In the presence of O 2 , these radicals rapidly react to form peroxy radicals (ROO), which quickly decay via carbon-centered radical intermediates (QOOH) to stable carbonyl products that are identified in this work. The carbonyl products are detected under thermal conditions (298 K, 10 torr He) using multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry (MPIMS). The main products (and associated relative abundances) originating from unimolecular decay of anti-MVK-oxide and subsequent reaction with O 2 are formaldehyde (88 ± 5%), ketene (9 ± 1%) and glyoxal (3 ± 1%). Those identified from the unimolecular decay of syn-MACR-oxide and subsequent reaction of O 2 are acetaldehyde (37 ± 7%), vinyl alcohol (9 ± 1%), methylketene (2 ± 1%), and acrolein (52 ± 5%). In addition to the stable carbonyl products, the secondary peroxy chemistry also generates OH or HO 2 radical co-products.

OH Roaming and Beyond in the Unimolecular Decay of the Methyl-Ethyl-Substituted Criegee Intermediate: Observations and Predictions

Alkene ozonolysis generates short-lived Criegee intermediates that are a significant source of hydroxyl (OH) radicals. Here this study demonstrates that roaming of the separating OH radicals can yield alternate hydroxycarbonyl products, thereby reducing the OH yield. Specifically, hydroxybutanone has been detected as a stable product arising from roaming in the unimolecular decay of the methyl-ethyl-substituted Criegee intermediate (MECI) under thermal flow cell conditions. The dynamical features of this novel multistage dissociation plus a roaming unimolecular decay process have also been examined with ab initio kinetics calculations. Experimentally, hydroxybutanone isomers are distinguished from the isomeric MECI by their higher ionization threshold and distinctive photoionization spectra. Moreover, the exponential rise of the hydroxybutanone kinetic time profile matches that for the unimolecular decay of MECI. A weaker methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) photoionization signal is also attributed to OH roaming. Complementary multireference electronic structure calculations have been utilized to map the unimolecular decay pathways for MECI, starting with 1,4 H atom transfer from a methyl or methylene group to the terminal oxygen, followed by roaming of the separating OH and butanonyl radicals in the long-range region of the potential. Roaming via reorientation and the addition of OH to the vinyl group of butanonyl is shown to yield hydroxybutanone, and subsequent C–O elongation and H-transfer can lead to MVK. A comprehensive theoretical kinetic analysis has been conducted to evaluate rate constants and branching yields (ca. 10–11%) for thermal unimolecular decay of MECI to conventional and roaming products under laboratory and atmospheric conditions, consistent with the estimated experimental yield (ca. 7%).
