Supported Lanthanum Borohydride Catalyzes CH Borylation Inside Zeolite Micropores

Abstract The zeolite‐supported lanthanide La(BH 4 ) x ‐HY 30 catalyzes C−H borylation of benzene with pinacolborane (HBpin), providing a complementary approach to precious, late transition metal‐catalyzed borylations. The reactive catalytic species are generated from La grafted at the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in micropores of the zeolite, whereas silanoate‐ and aluminoate‐grafted sites are inactive under the reaction conditions. During typical catalytic borylations, conversion to phenyl pinacolborane (PhBpin) is zero‐order in HBpin concentration. A turnover number (TON) of 167 is accessed by capping external silanols, selectively grafting at BAS sites, and adding HBpin slowly to the reaction.

Polyethylene Incorporating Diels–Alder Comonomers: A “Trojan Horse” Strategy for Chemically Recyclable Polyolefins

Abstract Polyolefins with periodic unsaturation in the backbone chain are sought after for synthesizing chemically recyclable polymers or telechelic polyolefin macromonomers. Here we introduce a bottom‐up synthesis of unsaturated high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) via copolymerization of ethylene with dimethyl 7‐oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hepta‐2,5‐diene‐3,5‐dicarboxylate followed by post‐polymerization retro‐Diels–Alder to unveil hidden double bonds in the polymer backbone. The incorporation of this “Trojan Horse” comonomer was varied and a series of unsaturated HDPE polymers with block lengths of 1.2, 1.9, and 3.5 kDa between double bonds was synthesized. Cross metathesis of unsaturated HDPE samples with 2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate yielded telechelic ester terminated PE macromonomers suitable for the preparation of ester‐linked PE. These materials were depolymerized and repolymerized, making them suitable candidates for chemical recycling. The ester‐linked PE displayed thermal and mechanical properties comparable to commercial HDPE.

Thermal Stability and Outgassing Behaviors of High‐nickel Cathodes in Lithium‐ion Batteries

Abstract LiNiO 2 ‐based high‐nickel layered oxide cathodes are regarded as promising cathode materials for high‐energy‐density automotive lithium batteries. Most of the attention thus far has been paid towards addressing their surface and structural instability issues brought by the increase of Ni content (>90 %) with an aim to enhance the cycle stability. However, the poor safety performance remains an intractable problem for their commercialization in the market, yet it has not received appropriate attention. In this review, we focus on the gas generation and thermal degradation behaviors of high‐Ni cathodes, which are critical factors in determining their overall safety performance. A comprehensive overview of the mechanisms of outgassing and thermal runaway reactions is presented and analyzed from a chemistry perspective. Finally, we discuss the challenges and the insights into developing robust, safe high‐Ni cathodes.

Irreparable Interphase Chemistry Degradation Induced by Temperature Pulse in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract While it is widely recognized that the operating temperature significantly affects the energy density and cycle life of lithium‐ion batteries, the consequence of electrode‐electrolyte interphase chemistry to sudden environmental temperature changes remains inadequately understood. Here, we systematically investigate the effects of a temperature pulse (T pulse) on the electrochemical performance of LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) pouch full cells. By utilizing advanced characterization tools, such as time‐of‐flight secondary‐ion mass spectrometry, we reveal that the T pulse can lead to an irreversible degradation of cathode‐electrolyte interphase chemistry and architecture. Despite negligible immediate impacts on the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphite anode, aggregated cathode‐to‐anode chemical crossover gradually degrades the SEI by catalyzing electrolyte reduction decomposition and inducing metallic dead Li formation because of insufficient cathode passivation after the T pulse. Consequently, pouch cells subjected to the T pulse show an inferior cycle stability to those free of the T pulse. This work unveils the effects of sudden temperature changes on the interphase chemistry and cell performance, emphasizing the importance of a proper temperature management in assessing performance.

A Molecular Compound for Highly Selective Purification of Ethylene

Purification of C 2 H 4 from an C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 mixture is one of the most challenging separation processes, which is achieved mainly through energy-intensive, cryogenic distillation in industry. Sustainable, non-distillation methods are highly desired as alternatives. We discovered that the fluorinated bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligand supported copper(I) complex {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 has features very desirable in an olefin–paraffin separation material. It binds ethylene exclusively over ethane generating [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ). This molecular compound exhibits extremely high and record ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) C 2 H 4 /C 2 H 6 gas separation selectivity, affording high purity (>99.5 %) ethylene that can be readily desorbed from separation columns. In-situ PXRD provides a “live” picture of the reversible conversion between [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) and the ethylene-free sorbent in the solid-state, driven by the presence or removal of C 2 H 4 . As a result, molecular structures of trinuclear {[(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu} 3 and mononuclear [(CF 3 ) 2 Bp]Cu(C 2 H 4 ) are also presented.

Rational Design and Reticulation of Infinite qbe Rod Secondary Building Units into Metal–Organic Frameworks through a Global Desymmetrization Approach for Inverse C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 Separation

Abstract The development of reticular chemistry has enabled the construction of a large array of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse net topologies and functions. However, dominating this class of materials are those built from discrete/finite secondary building units (SBUs), yet the designed synthesis of frameworks involving infinite rod‐shaped SBUs remain underdeveloped. Here, by virtue of a global linker desymmetrization approach, we successfully targeted a novel Cu‐MOF (Cu‐ASY) incorporating infinite Cu‐carboxylate rod SBUs with its structure determined by micro electron diffraction (MicroED) crystallography. Interestingly, the rod SBU can be simplified as a unique cylindric sphere packingqbetubule made of [4 3 .6 2 ] tiles, which further connect the tritopic linkers to give a newly discovered 3,5‐connectedgfcnet. Cu‐ASY is a permanent ultramicroporous material featuring 1D channels with highly inert surfaces and shows a preferential adsorption of propane (C 3 H 8 ) over propene (C 3 H 6 ). The efficiency of C 3 H 8 selective Cu‐ASY is validated by multicycle breakthrough experiments, giving C 3 H 6 productivity of 2.2 L/kg. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that C 3 H 8 molecules form multiple C−H⋅⋅⋅π and atypical C−H⋅⋅⋅ H−C van der Waals interactions with the inner nonpolar surfaces. This work therefore highlights the linker desymmetrization as an encouraging and intriguing strategy for achieving unique MOF structures and properties.

Rewritable Surface‐Grafted Polymer Brushes with Dynamic Covalent Linkages

Abstract Surface grafting of polymer brushes drastically modifies surface properties, including wettability, compatibility, responsiveness, etc. A broad variety of functionalities can be introduced to the surface via different types of polymers. Bringing together properties of two or more types of polymer brushes to one surface opens up even more possibilities in brush‐modified materials. However, while it is generally feasible to introduce several chemical compositions along the brushes via copolymerization, it is challenging to vary the types of polymer brushes along a surface. Although previous studies have demonstrated binary brushes via orthogonal polymerization techniques or partial deactivation/regrafting, they commonly limit the number of polymer types to two. Here, we propose a strategy to introduce dynamic covalent diketoenamine linkages at the root of polymer brushes. The grafting density could be precisely tuned during surface functionalization. The surface‐anchored polymer brushes were cleaved by the addition of small molecule amines. New polymer brushes can be regrafted from the surface following refunctionalization of exposed sites. The maneuverability allows tuning of the types and densities of the polymer brushes, pointing the way to the preparation of a new generation of well‐defined brush‐modified materials with mixed grafts, with potential applications in the design of smart materials and surfaces.

Cu Evolution over Bimetallic Cu‐Y/Beta Zeolite Under H 2 and Ethanol Atmospheres: Unveiling the Role of Diatomic Metal–Metal Interactions

Understanding the dynamic evolution of Cu species under varying environmental conditions is critical for addressing challenges related to the activity and the stability of copper‐based catalysts in thermo‐, photo‐, and electrocatalysis. However, metal–metal interactions between dual single atoms and their effects on Cu evolution after exposure to different environmental molecules remain underexplored. Herein, we synthesized bimetallic Cu‐Y/Beta catalysts with dual single‐atom Cu and Y sites and monometallic Cu‐Beta catalysts with isolated Cu sites in dealuminated Beta zeolites. By varying Cu and Y compositions, diatomic interactions were studied under H 2 and ethanol atmospheres. With 6 wt% Y loading, approximately 0.4 wt% of Cu species in Cu‐Y/Beta remained partially oxidized as Cu(I) after reduction in pure H 2 at 350 °C, in contrast to the full transition to metallic Cu observed in Cu‐Beta. Combining X‐ray absorption spectroscopy with kinetic studies revealed that metallic Cu became the predominant species after reduction with H 2 as Cu loading increased from 0.4 to 1.7 wt%, quadrupling the initial ethanol dehydrogenation rate and demonstrating the dominant role of Cu(0) sites. In conclusion, scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory simulations indicated spatial proximity between dual single‐atom Cu and Y sites and elucidated Cu speciation controlled by diatomic interactions.

Synthesis of succinic acid‐based polyamide through direct solid‐state polymerization method: Avoiding cyclization of succinic acid

Abstract Succinic acid is an important synthetic monomer but it is difficult to use it as a precursor for synthesizing high molecular weight polyamide, due to its tendency to perform intra‐cyclization reaction at high temperature. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, the direct solid‐state polymerization (DSSP) method with the initial reactant, nylon salt which was composed of 1, 5‐diaminopentane, succinic acid, and terephthalic acid, was applied to synthesize the bio‐based copolyamide PA 5T/54. In comparison with the conventional melting polymerization method, the DSSP method can prevent the cyclization reaction of succinic acid effectively due to the lower reacting temperature as well as the restriction effect of the nylon salt. As a result, the product fabricated by DSSP method has higher molecular weight and much lighter color from red to white. Therefore, the DSSP method is advantageous for the synthesis of the polymers or copolymers composed of the succinic acid as the monomer. Furthermore, the polymerization mechanism proposed in this work can serve as a guidance for the design of the molecular structure and control of the polymerization process.

Machine learning to predict biomass sorghum yields under future climate scenarios

Crop yield modeling is critical in the design of national strategies for agricultural production, particularly in the context of a changing climate. Forecasting yields of bioenergy crops at fine spatial resolutions can help to evaluate near-term and long-term pathways for scaling up bio-based fuel and chemical production, and for understanding the impacts of abiotic stressors such as severe droughts and temperature extremes on potential biomass supply. In this work we used a large dataset of 28,364 Sorghum bicolor yield samples (uniquely identified by county and year of observation), environmental variables, and multiple approaches to analyze historical trends in sorghum productivity across the USA. We selected the most accurate machine learning approach (a variation of the random forest approach) to predict future trends in sorghum yields under four greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios and two irrigation regimes. We identified irrigation practices, vapor pressure deficit, and time (a proxy for technological improvement) as the most important predictors of sorghum productivity. Our results showed a decreasing trend of sorghum yields over future years (on average 2.7% from 2018 to 2099), with greater decline under a high GHG emissions scenario (3.8%) and in the absence of irrigation (4.6%). Geographically, we observed the steepest predicted declines in the Great Lakes (8.2%), Upper Midwest (7.5%), and Heartland (6.7%) regions. Our study demonstrates the use of machine learning to identify environmental controllers of sorghum biomass yield and predict yields with reasonable accuracy. These results can inform the development of more realistic biomass supply projections for bioenergy if sorghum production is scaled up. Metal-Mediated Directional Capping of Rod-Packing Metal–Organic Frameworks

We report two new rod-packing metal–organic frameworks (RPMOF) are constructed by regulating the in situ formation of the capping agent. In CPM-s7, carboxylate linkers extend 1D manganese-oxide chains in four additional directions, forming 3D RPMOF. The substitution of Mn 2+ with a stronger Lewis acidic Co 2+ , leads to an acceleration of the hydrolysis-prone sulfonate linker, resulting in presence of sulfate ions to reduce two out of the four carboxylate-extending directions, and thus forming a new 2D rod-packing CPM-s8. Density functional theory calculations and magnetization measurements reveal ferrimagnetic ordering of CPM-s8, signifying the potential of exploring 2D RPMOF for effective low-dimensional magnetic materials.
