A comprehensive model of the Venus ionosphere

Coupled time-dependent continuity-momentum and energy balance equations for the Venus ionosphere were simultaneously solved for CO2(+), O2(+), O(+), He(+), and H(+) densities and electron and ion temperatures for an altitude range of 120-500 km. Values of the solar zenith angle varied from 0 deg (subsolar point) to 90 deg (terminator). The calculations include the horizontal bulk transport of ions by neutral winds but not the horizontal diffusion. The two-stream photoelectron transport method was used to find the heating rates for the ambient electrons. Different boundary conditions were considered, and a nightside ionosphere was calculated. The results of these model calculations are in good agreement with measurements in the region of maximum electron density. Characteristics of topside and nightside densities and temperatures are discussed.

Comprehensive helicopter analysis: A state of the art review

An assessment of the status of helicopter theory and analysis is presented. The technology level embodied in available design tools (computer programs) is examined, considering the problem areas of performance, loads and vibration, handling qualities and simulation, and aeroelastic stability. The effectiveness of the present analyses is discussed. The characteristics of the technology in the analyses are reviewed, including the aerodynamics technology, induced velocity and wake geometry, dynamics technology, and machine limitations.

A comprehensive data processing plan for crop calendar MSS signature development from satellite imagery: Crop identification using vegetation phenology

The author has identified the following significant results. The phenological method of crop identification involves the creation of crop signatures which characterize multispectral observations as phenological growth states. The phenological signature models spectral reflectance explicitly as a function of crop maturity rather than as a function of date. A correspondence of time to growth state is established which minimizes the smallest difference between the given multispectral multitemporal vector and a category mean vector. The application of the method to the identification of winter wheat and corn shows (1) the method is capable of discriminating crop type with about the same degree of accuracy as more traditional classifiers; (2) the use of LANDSAT observations on two or more dates yields better results than the use of a single observation; and (3) some potential is demonstrated for labeling the degree of maturity of the crop, as well as the crop type.

Studies of the acoustic transmission characteristics of coaxial nozzles with inverted velocity profiles: Comprehensive data report

The efficiency of internal noise radiation through a coannular exhaust nozzle with an inverted velocity profile was studied. A preliminary investigation was first undertaken (1) to define the test parameters which influence the internal noise radiation; (2) to develop a test methodology which could realistically be used to examine the effects of the test parameters; and (3) to validate this methodology. The result was the choice of an acoustic impulse as the internal noise source in the jet nozzles. Noise transmission characteristics of a coannular nozzle system were then investigated. In particular, the effects of fan convergence angle, core extension length to annulus height ratio and flow Mach numbers and temperatures were studied. Relevant spectral data only is presented in the form of normalized nozzle transfer function versus nondimensional frequency.

Comprehensive thermoelectric properties of n- and p-type 78a/o Si - 22a/o Ge alloy

The time and temperature dependence of the thermoelectric properties on n- and p-type 78 a/o Si - 22 a/o Ge alloy are presented in detail for the range of temperatures of zero to 1000 C and operating times up to twelve years. The mechanisms responsible for the time dependence of the properties are discussed and mathematical models used in the derivation of the property values from experimental data are presented. The thermoelectric properties for each polarity type of the alloy are presented as a function of temperature for various operating times.

Therapeutic gymnastics in comprehensive treatment of patients with generalized myasthenia

The technique of therapeutic gymnastics was used for patients with mayasthenia gravis to control the consequences of hypodynamia induced by the myasthenic process. It is concluded that during myasthenia, the severity of the disease is due to the affection of the cross striated musculature. The most life threatening are the disorders in respiration and swallowing, that can be intensified by forced stay in bed and immobility. It is also concluded that the use of therapeutic gymnastics in patients which myasthenia promotes efficient presurgical preparation, and in the post surgical period; prevention of pulmonary complications and normalization of respiration. Therapeutic gymnastics with regard to the severity and localization of the myasthenic disorders must be a component part of the presurgical preparation and postsurgical management of patients with generalized myasthenia.

A comprehensive comparison between experiment and prediction for a transonic turbulent separated flow

Attempts to predict surface pressure distributions on lifting surfaces have been relatively unsuccessful in the transonic regime when the shock wave is of sufficient strength to produce an extensive region of turbulent separated flow. For these conditions, the viscous flow behavior must be accurately described even to obtain reasonable predictions of surface pressure. The present paper addresses this problem. Detailed comparisons between prediction and experiment are made for a transonic, turbulent boundary-layer separation (freestream Mach number = 0.875) for which the turbulent flow properties (including the turbulent Reynolds stress) had been measured by the laser velocimeter technique from upstream of the separated region through reattachment. The flow was generated on an axisymmetric 'bump' model designed to simulate the flow on an airfoil at transonic conditions. The numerical methods used in the comparisons include the solution of the time-dependent, mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, and the solution of the compressible boundary-layer equations by the inverse method. Solutions were obtained for the well established Cebeci-Smith algebraic turbulence model and the more recently developed Wilcox-Rubesin two-equation turbulence model.

Comprehensive testing of a defense systems communications satellite

The system level testing of the defense satellite communications system (DSCS) 3 program is reviewed. Concentration is on the results of the systems tests of the DSCS 3 development test model (DTM). The DSCS 3DTM consisted of engineering components interconnected in an open bench layout. The DTM tests were performed to demonstrate satellite electrical performance characteristics and to uncover design deficiencies and interface problems. The availability of the DTM test results prior to the fabrication of the flight model hardware permited the incorporation of necessary design changes with a minimum impact on program costs and schedules.

Model aerodynamic test results for two variable cycle engine coannular exhaust systems at simulated takeoff and cruise conditions. Comprehensive data report. Volume 2: Tabulated aeroynamic data book 1

Tabulated data from wind tunnel tests conducted to evaluate the aerodynamic performance of an advanced coannular exhaust nozzle for a future supersonic propulsion system are presented. Tests were conducted with two test configurations: (1) a short flap mechanism for fan stream control with an isentropic contoured flow splitter, and (2) an iris fan nozzle with a conical flow splitter. Both designs feature a translating primary plug and an auxiliary inlet ejector. Tests were conducted at takeoff and simulated cruise conditions. Data were acquired at Mach numbers of 0, 0.36, 0.9, and 2.0 for a wide range of nozzle operating conditions. At simulated supersonic cruise, both configurations demonstrated good performance, comparable to levels assumed in earlier advanced supersonic propulsion studies. However, at subsonic cruise, both configurations exhibited performance that was 6 to 7.5 percent less than the study assumptions. At takeoff conditions, the iris configuration performance approached the assumed levels, while the short flap design was 4 to 6 percent less. Data are provided through test run 25.
