SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Theory Manual (V.5.6)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible ow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Plasma decay in hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon- and H 2 O-containing mixtures excited by high-voltage nanosecond discharge at elevated gas temperatures

Plasma decay after a high-voltage nanosecond discharge was experimentally and numerically studied in pure hydrocarbons (C 2 H 6 and C 3 H 8 ), and H 2 O:N 2 and C 3 H 8 :O 2 mixtures for pressures in the range 2–4 Torr and gas temperatures from 300 to 600 K. In a stoichiometric C 3 H 8 :O 2 mixture, plasma decay was also studied in a repetitively pulsed discharge for varing numbers of discharge pulses (varying degrees of fuel oxidation). The rate of plasma decay was determined from the temporal evolution of electron density measured using the microwave interferometer. It was observed that gas heating to 600 K leads to a decrease in the rate of plasma decay in all cases. The effect of heating on plasma decay was most profound in the H 2 O:N 2 mixture (after a single discharge pulse) and in the C 3 H 8 :O 2 mixture for high degrees of fuel oxidation. A kinetic scheme was developed to numerically simulate the plasma decay in hydrocarbons and combustible mixtures. Numerical analysis showed that, under the conditions studied, plasma decay was controlled by dissociative electron recombination with simple molecular and cluster ions. Gas heating led to a decrease in the rate of the electron-ion recombination and the rate of conversion of molecular ions to cluster ions. As a result, the gas temperature increase caused a decrease in the fraction of cluster ions for which the recombination coefficients are an order of magnitude higher than the recombination coefficients for molecular ions. The influence of gas heating on the decrease of the amount of cluster ions was more important when the ion composition was dominated by hydrated H 3 O + (H 2 O) k ions. The rates of the formation of these ions are extremely sensitive to any variations in gas temperature. A result, in agreement with our observations, gas heating led to an anomalous decrease in the rates of plasma decay in the H 2 O:N 2 mixture, as well as in the C 3 H 8 :O 2 mixture when H 2 O molecules were produced due to fuel oxidation.

The role of collisional energy transfer in the thermal and prompt dissociation of 1-methyl allyl

Collisional energy transfer plays a pivotal role in a-priori calculations of the pressure-dependent rate constants obtained from a master equation. However, accurate determinations of collisional energy transfer parameters are rare and so most kinetic studies rely on best-fits of these parameters to experimental measurements (if available) or estimates guided from literature studies. In this work, we have quantified the effect of the uncertainty in energy transfer parameters on the thermal and prompt dissociation kinetics of a resonance stabilized radical, 1-methyl allyl (1MA), of relevance to the combustion of 1- and 2-butene isomers. Simulations using literature kinetics models were performed to assess the impact of these uncertainties on flame propagation and speciation data in laminar flames of 1- and 2-butene. Analyses of the uncertainty propagated by the energy transfer parameters for 1MA dissociation to the flame simulations, in particular the laminar flame speed, indicate an intricate coupling between the kinetics of 1MA dissociation (chain propagation) and its reaction with H-atoms (chain-termination). Ab-initio based theoretical calculations were also performed to obtain pressure-dependent kinetics for the reaction of 1MA with H-atoms. Lastly, theoretically calculated energy transfer parameters were used to best characterize the kinetics and branching between the chain propagating 1MA dissociation and the chain-terminating reaction 1MA + H.

Multidimensional modeling of non-equilibrium plasma generated by a radio-frequency corona discharge

Low-temperature plasma (LTP) ignition concepts rely on the production of radical and charged species to speed up the onset of combustion in spark-ignition engines. These features are responsible for the superior performance of LTP igniters under extremely dilute combustion operation that is not achievable by conventional spark igniters. Additionally, LTP discharges extend the lifetime of the igniters, due to the avoidance of spark processes. For these reasons, the engine research community and the automotive industry have shown growing interest in this technology in the recent years. As of today, computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) codes typically used by the multi-dimensional engine modeling community do not have reliable models to describe LTP ignition processes. One key missing piece of information is the physical and chemical properties of the plasma and their effect on combustion ignition. Most non-equilibrium plasma simulations reported in literature are based on simplified, canonical geometries, with simple discharge excitation schemes. Here we conduct multi-dimensional modeling of the non-equilibrium plasma generated by an application-relevant radio-frequency (RF) corona discharge in air. Three test cases are simulated, characterized by different environmental pressure levels and peak electrode voltage values at room temperature. Streamer penetration, electron number density, atomic oxygen production, and bulk gas temperature distribution in the first 10 sinusoidal pulses are presented and discussed. This model can be used as a key tool for an in-depth understanding of RF-corona discharge for automotive applications and provides the basis for future implementations of dedicated LTP ignition models in CFD codes.
