Market Structure Evaluation to Support the Clean Energy Transition

One can argue that wholesale electricity markets in the United States are a grand experiment with scarcely two decades of operational experience in their current form. A wide body of literature points out short comings of these markets function today, ranging from problems of missing money to negative prices for real-time electricity prices. The purpose of this report is to outline a framework by which energy policies and market structures can be evaluated to ascertain the impact these institutions have on electricity generators. The report describes an evaluated framework to compare energy policy then it discusses fundamental differences in regulated versus deregulated electricity markets. Then the report leverages these sections to describe assessment needs for quantifying aggregate impacts to generators.

LNPK 156 Geothermal Coalition: Designing and Deploying Clean Energy in a Justice40 Cold Climate Community

The LNPK 156 Geothermal Coalition formed around the idea of building a new geothermal heating and cooling system in Duluth, MN for the Lincoln Park Justice40 neighborhood. The Coalition has been spearheaded by the City of Duluth and the local non-profit Ecolibrium3, and is named after the census tract of the neighborhood containing large portions of Lincoln Park, as well as a wastewater treatment plant, managed by the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD). The idea of building a geothermal system came to fruition over the period of about a decade, with repeated observations that the warm water discharged from the wastewater treatment plant was an energy-rich resource that has currently been untapped and released into the St. Louis River. The objective of this project was to build a geothermal system that harnesses wastewater heat recovery methods and satisfies the demand in a portion of Lincoln Park – a neighborhood experiencing high energy burdens, low life-expectancy, and where the natural gas and fuel oil used to heat homes and businesses results in decreased air quality and increased carbon emissions. The goal was to utilize this wastewater heat recovery method to benefit the neighborhood hosting the wastewater plant itself.

Modeling and Analysis of Clean Energy and Storage Technologies (CRADA Final Report, Project 1)

The goal of this project is to provide Southern Company Services, Inc. ("Participant") with custom scripts that can be used to create an average PV energy production profile, calculate lifetime energy value, calculate capacity value, and calculate the resultant financial metrics considering those value streams. Secondly, a fuel-cell model will be added to the public version of System Advisor Model (SAM). This standalone technology will incorporate PV and battery storage, allowing the participant to model the interaction of these three technologies. By adding this capability to a public version of SAM, a broad audience will be able to consider the system performance and financial benefits of installing a fuel cell as a baseline generator with PV. Thirdly, automated dispatch algorithms will be developed and added to SAM. These algorithms will enable Southern Company to dispatch a DC-connected front-of-the-meter battery system while considering price signals and PV clipping behavior. By adding these capabilities to a public version of SAM, users will be able to consider more complex and realistic ways of dispatching a battery system.

Carbon Ore-Derived Critical Materials for Clean Energy Technologies

Conference presentation at American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, October 27–31, 2024. Trends in the manufacture of electric vehicles that use graphite-based LIBs are rising steeply in the United States and globally, but the U.S. domestic supply chains for graphite, the largest component in an LIB by mass, is severely limited and faces complicated geopolitical dynamics with foreign sources. Consequently, the United States has designated graphite as a critical mineral to focus attention and resources to develop technologies to meet the challenge of limited domestic graphite supply chains. Results obtained so far based on the UCOP process have successfully validated the technology at the laboratory scale, with the produced graphite material showing up to 95% degree of graphitization, high carbon purity of ~99.98%, residual ash content of ≤0.02%, negligible moisture, low trace elements, and high electrochemical stability. These results suggest that the emerging UCOP technology is a promising approach to effectively synthesize high-quality graphite from abundant coal and coal waste resources in the United States to create a sustainable domestic critical graphite supply chain. A brief description of the status of UCOP process development and representative results will be presented.

Mechanistic Tuning of Chemical Transformations for Coupling the Geo-mimicry of Acid Gas Storage with Design Strategies to Produce Clean Energy Carriers in Multi-Phase Reaction Environments (MATTER) (Final Report)

The need to diversify approaches to produce essential energy carriers such as H 2 motivate advances in thermodynamically downhill geo-inspired pathways. Currently, more than 80% of hydrogen is produced via steam methane reforming (SMR) followed by water gas shift reaction (WGSR) pathway with the co-production of CO 2 . As an alternative to introducing CO 2 separation strategies downstream such as the use of membranes, solvents, or sorbents, geo-inspired carbon mineralization is harnessed as an alternative crystallization pathway. The thermodynamically downhill carbon mineralization pathways are hypothesized to accelerate H2 conversion while separating CO 2 . The work conducted through this project discusses the mechanisms associated with coupling the water gas shift reaction (WGSR) with carbon mineralization. In addition to harnessing Ca- and Mg-bearing oxides or hydroxides that are known to be reactive for CO 2 capture, the use of earth abundant silicate minerals such as Ca- and Mg-bearing silicates, is also investigated. Key outcomes include approaches to architect Mg-silicate with well-controlled pore size distributions, probing the enhancement in H 2 yield with inherent CO 2 suppression using Ca- and Mg-bearing oxides, hydroxides, and silicates, elucidating the changes in silicate chemistry during carbon mineralization, and exploring direct integration of carbon mineralization with WGSR and the development of separate low temperature pathway for reactive CO 2 capture and mineralization are developed.

Rocket Engine Innovations Advance Clean Energy

During launch countdown, at approximately T-7 seconds, the Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs) roar to life. When the controllers indicate normal operation, the solid rocket boosters ignite and the shuttle blasts off. Initially, the SSMEs throttle down to reduce stress during the period of maximum dynamic pressure, but soon after, they throttle up to propel the orbiter to 17,500 miles per hour. In just under 9 minutes, the three SSMEs burn over 1.6 million pounds of propellant, and temperatures inside the main combustion chamber reach 6,000 F. To cool the engines, liquid hydrogen circulates through miles of tubing at -423 F. From 1981to 2011, the Space Shuttle fleet carried crew and cargo into orbit to perform a myriad of unprecedented tasks. After 30 years and 135 missions, the feat of engineering known as the SSME boasted a 100-percent flight success rate.
