Measurement of beauty-strange meson production in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV via non-prompt D s + mesons

The production yields of non-prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ mesons, namely ${D}^{+}_{s}$ mesons from beauty-hadron decays, were measured for the first time as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) at midrapidity (|$y$| < 0.5) in central and semi-central Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The ${D}^{+}_{s}$ mesons and their charge conjugates were reconstructed from the hadronic decay channel ${D}^{+}_{s}$ → $φπ^+$, with $φ$ → K - K + , in the 4 < $p_T$ < 36 GeV/c and 2 < $p_T$ < 24 GeV/ $c$ intervals for the 0–10% and 30–50% centrality classes, respectively. The measured yields of non-prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ mesons are compared to those of prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ and non-prompt $D^0$ mesons by calculating the ratios of the production yields in Pb–Pb collisions and the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$. The ratio between the $R_{AA}$ of non-prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ mesons, and that between the $R_{AA}$ of non-prompt ${D}^{+}_{s}$ and non-prompt $D^0$ mesons in central Pb–Pb collisions are found to be on average higher than unity in the 4 < $p_T$ < 12 GeV/ $c$ interval with a statistical significance of about 1.6σ and 1.7σ, respectively. The measured $R_{AA}$ ratios are compared with the predictions of theoretical models of heavy-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding QGP that incorporate hadronisation via quark recombination.

Monitoring of reforested areas using LANDSAT data

Imagery obtained with channels 5 and 7 was visually interpreted in an effort to determine the spatial, spectral, and temporal characteristics of a 105,000 hectare area of Fazenda Mutum which was reforested with various species of pine and eucalyptus. It was possible to map a reforested area as small as 6 hectare in its initial implantation using contrast with the surrounding targets. Five classes were mapped: nondeforested areas, partially deforested areas, deforested areas, partially reforested areas, and fully reforested areas. In 1979, 12,000 hectare were deforested, 4,330.83 hectare were partially reforested, and 42,744.71 hectare were reforested.

SEEDS Moving Groups and CHARIS Status Updates

We present the status update for the SEEDS Moving Groups category. To date, we have observed 59 targets and currently have more than 20 candidates. We also present the expected scientific capabilities of CHARIS, the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph, which is being built for the Subaru 8.2 m telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. CHARIS will be implemented behind the new extreme adaptive optics system at Subaru, SCExAO, and the existing 188-actuator system AO188. CHARIS will offer three observing modes over near~infrared wavelengths from 0.9 to 2.4 microns (the y-, J-, H-, and K-bands), including a low-spectral-resolution mode covering this entire wavelength range and a high-resolution mode within a single band. With these capabilities, CHARIS will offer exceptional sensitivity for discovering giant exoplanets, and will enable detailed characterization of their atmospheres, CHARIS, the only planned high-contrast integral field spectrograph on an 8m-class telescope in the Northern Hemisphere, will complement the similar instruments such as Project 1640 at Palomar, and GPI and SPHERE in Chile.

A Fundamental Economic Assessment of Recovering Rare Earth Elements and Critical Minerals from Acid Mine Drainage Using a Network Sourcing Strategy

In recent years, acid mine drainage (AMD) has emerged as a promising unconventional source of rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical minerals (CMs) such as cobalt and manganese. In this regard, AMD provides a natural heap leaching effect that extracts and concentrates REE/CM from the host strata creating a partially enriched feedstock suitable for downstream extraction, separation, and recovery. While several prior studies have described processes and approaches for the valorization of AMD, very few have described the supply chain and infrastructure requirements as well as the associated economic assessment. To that end, this paper provides a fundamental economic assessment of REE/CM recovery from AMD using a network sourcing strategy in addition to a robust, flexible feedstock separations and refining facility. The methodology of this paper follows that of a typical techno-economic analysis with capital and operating costs estimated using AACE Class IV (FEL-2) guidelines. To demonstrate the range of possible outcomes, four pricing scenarios were modeled including contemporary prices (September, 2021) as well as the minimum and maximum prices over the last decade. In addition, five production scenarios were considered reflecting variations in the product suite, ranging from full elemental separation to magnet REE and CM production only (i.e., Pr, Nd, Tb, Dy, Y, Sc, Co, and Mn). The results of this analysis show that, with the exception of the minimum price scenario, all operational configurations have positive economic indicators with rates of return varying from 25% to 32% for the contemporary price scenario. The optimal configuration was determined to be production of Co, Mn, and all REEs except for mischmetal, which is not recovered. Sensitivity analysis and Monte Carlo simulation show that capital cost and HCl consumption are the two major factors influencing rate of return, thus indicating opportunities for future technology development and cost optimization. Implications of the study and a cooperative profit-sharing model for sourcing are also described.

Improved noise performance from the next-generation buried-channel p-MOSFET SiSeROs

The Single electron Sensitive Read Out (SiSeRO) is a novel on-chip charge detector output stage for charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors. Developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, this technology uses a p-MOSFET transistor with a depleted internal gate beneath the transistor channel. The transistor source-drain current is modulated by the transfer of charge into the internal gate. At Stanford, we have developed a readout module based on the drain current of the on-chip transistor to characterize the device. In our earlier work, we characterized a number of first prototype SiSeROs with the MOSFET transistor channels at the surface layer. An equivalent noise charge (ENC) of around 15 electrons root mean square (RMS) was obtained. In this work, we examine the first buried-channel SiSeRO. Here we have achieved substantially improved noise performance of around 4.5 electrons root mean square (RMS) and a full width half maximum (FWHM) energy resolution of 132 eV at 5.9 keV, for a readout speed of 625 kpixel/s. We also discuss how digital filtering techniques can be used to further improve the SiSeRO noise performance. Additional measurements and device simulations will be essential to further mature the SiSeRO technology. This new device class presents an exciting new technology for the next-generation astronomical X-ray telescopes requiring fast, low-noise, radiation-hard megapixel imagers with moderate spectroscopic resolution.

Vegetation survey in Amazonia using LANDSAT data

Automatic Image-100 analysis of LANDSAT data was performed using the MAXVER classification algorithm. In the pilot area, four vegetation units were mapped automatically in addition to the areas occupied for agricultural activities. The Image-100 classified results together with a soil map and information from RADAR images, permitted the establishment of the final legend with six classes: semi-deciduous tropical forest; low land evergreen tropical forest; secondary vegetation; tropical forest of humid areas, predominant pastureland and flood plains. Two water types were identified based on their sediments indicating different geological and geomorphological aspects.

Classification of ion mobility spectra by functional groups using neural networks

Neural networks were trained using whole ion mobility spectra from a standardized database of 3137 spectra for 204 chemicals at various concentrations. Performance of the network was measured by the success of classification into ten chemical classes. Eleven stages for evaluation of spectra and of spectral pre-processing were employed and minimums established for response thresholds and spectral purity. After optimization of the database, network, and pre-processing routines, the fraction of successful classifications by functional group was 0.91 throughout a range of concentrations. Network classification relied on a combination of features, including drift times, number of peaks, relative intensities, and other factors apparently including peak shape. The network was opportunistic, exploiting different features within different chemical classes. Application of neural networks in a two-tier design where chemicals were first identified by class and then individually eliminated all but one false positive out of 161 test spectra. These findings establish that ion mobility spectra, even with low resolution instrumentation, contain sufficient detail to permit the development of automated identification systems.

Progress of chemical characterization of asteroid Ryugu samples

It is believed that meteorites come from asteroids. Samples of asteroid (25143) Itokawa returned by the JAXA Hayabusa mission revealed that S-type asteroids are composed of materials consistent with the ordinary chondrite class[1,2]. The JAXA Hayabusa 2 [3]spacecraft launched on December 3rd, 2014 towards an asteroid (162173) Ryuguto clarify relationships between C-type asteroids and the carbonaceous chondrite class. Remote sensing observations from Hayabusa 2 show that (1) the albedo of Ryugu is darker than those of every known meteorite class[4, 5], (2) an absorption band at 2.72 μm indicates that phyllosilicates are ubiquitous on Ryugu [5],(3) the strength and shape of the absorption band feature suggests that Ryugu materials experienced heating above 300 °C[6], and (4) thermal inertia suggests that Ryugu materials are more porous than every known carbonaceous chondrite[7]. These results suggest that carbonaceous chondrite class materials are plausible for Ryugu materials, but no known carbonaceous chondrite completely matches the results obtained from Ryugu. *Complete abstract available in attached document

High-Entropy Oxides in the Mullite-Type Structure

High-entropy materials (HEMs) represent a new class of solid solutions containing at least five different elements. Their compositional diversity makes them promising as platforms for the development of functional materials. We synthesized new HEMs in a mullite-type structure and present five compounds, i.e., Bi 2 (Al 0.25 Ga 0.25 Fe 0.25 Mn 0.25 ) 4 O 9 and A 2 Mn 4 O 10 with variations of A = Nd, Sm, Y, Er, Eu, Ce, and Bi, demonstrating the vast accessible composition space. By combining scattering, microscopy, and spectroscopy techniques, we show that our materials are mixed solid solutions. Remarkably, when following their crystallization in situ using X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that the HEMs form through a metastable amorphous phase without the formation of any crystalline intermediates. We expect that our synthesis is excellently suited to synthesizing diverse HEMs and therefore will have a significant impact on their future exploration.

The pre-cataclysmic binary EUVE 2013+400

New optical spectroscopy shows a 0.706 d orbital period for Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) 2013+400 and confirms its membership in a class of close binary systems emerging from common-envelope evolution. This binary, like the prototype Feige 24, consists of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emitting hot white dwarf and a late-type dwarf. Bergeron et al.'s (1994) optical spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectrophotometry indicate that the white dwarf is hot (T(sub eff) approximately equals 50 000 K) and therefore very young (t(sub age) less than or equal 5 x 10(exp 6) yr), and extreme ultraviolet photometry places EUVE 2013+400 along a neutral hydrogen column density in the interstellar medium of n(sub H) approximately equal to 10(exp 19)/sq cm. The white dwarf is a DAO type and we obtained two independent estimates of the helium abundance from EUV photometric measurements (log(y) approximately equal to -3.2) and from the He II lambda-4686 line profile (log(y) approximately equal to -2.8). The data possibly indicate a level of heterogeneity expected in the context of on-going chemical separation in the photospheric layers. The Balmer lines show narrow emission that varies with binary phase with the equivalent widths of the emission trailing the radial velocities by 1/4 cycle: this phasing shows that most of the emission arises on the EUV-illuminated face of the red dwarf. A spectrophotometric decomposition shows that the secondary's spectral type is near M3 and that it contributes about 15%-25% of the total light near 6500 A; the resulting H-alpha emission is twice as strong as in Feige 24, with an equivalent width of 37-61 A with respect to the red dwarf continuum. EUVE 2013+400 is an important addition to the class of close binary stars discovered in EUV all-sky surveys.

Spectrally sharp magnetic excitations above the critical temperature in a frustrated Weyl semimetal

The rare-earth α-pyrochlore iridates are a prospective class of conducting frustrated magnets where electronic correlations, large spin-orbit coupling, and geometrical frustration interplay, leading to a rich set of magnetic and electronic phases. Despite their intriguing properties, the magnetic order and excitations in this fundamental class of topological quantum materials remain poorly understood due to challenges in growing large single crystals and insufficient microscopic information on their temperature-dependent phases. Here, by combining state-of-the-art thin-film synthesis, resonant elastic and inelastic X-ray scattering, spin wave analysis, and dynamical spin susceptibility calculations, we unequivocally reveal the presence of spectrally sharp, gapped magnetic excitations in Y 2 Ir 2 O 7 that surprisingly persist well above the Néel transition temperature, signaling the presence of a quasi-universal regime connected to fluctuations on frustrated lattices. This finding implies the existence of a highly unusual cooperative paramagnetic (CP) phase above the ordering temperature and offers an explanation for the puzzling high-temperature magnetic behavior observed across the family of metallic pyrochlore crystals. Understanding such magnetic excitations at technologically relevant temperatures opens up possibilities for novel topological spintronic devices.

Thermodynamic evidence for a two-component superconducting order parameter in Sr 2 RuO 4

Sr 2 RuO 4 has stood as the leading candidate for a spin-triplet superconductor for 26 years. However, recent NMR experiments have cast doubt on this candidacy and it is difficult to find a theory of superconductivity that is consistent with all experiments. Here, the order parameter symmetry for this material therefore remains an open question. Symmetry-based experiments are needed that can rule out broad classes of possible superconducting order parameters. Here, we use resonant ultrasound spectroscopy to measure the entire symmetry-resolved elastic tensor of Sr 2 RuO 4 through the superconducting transition. We observe a thermodynamic discontinuity in the shear elastic modulus c 66 , which implies that the superconducting order parameter has two components. A two-component p-wave order parameter, such as p x + ip y , naturally satisfies this requirement. As this order parameter appears to have been precluded by recent NMR experiments, we suggest that two other two-component order parameters, namely {d xz ,d yz } and {d x 2 –y 2 ,g xy (x 2 –y 2 ) }, are now the prime candidates for the order parameter of Sr 2 RuO 4 .

A search for ultrahigh-energy neutrinos associated with astrophysical sources using the third flight of ANITA

The ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon experiment is sensitive to interactions of ultrahigh-energy (E>10 18 eV) neutrinos in the Antarctic ice sheet. The third flight of ANITA, lasting 22 days, began in December 2014. We develop a methodology to search for energetic neutrinos spatially and temporally coincident with potential source classes in ANITA data. This methodology is applied to several source classes: the potential IceCube-identified neutrino sources TXS 0506+056 and NGC 1068, flaring high-energy blazars reported by the Fermi All-Sky Variability Analysis, gamma-ray bursts, and supernovae. Among searches within the five source classes, one candidate was identified as associated with SN 2015D, although not at a statistically significant level. Finally, we proceed to place upper limits on the source classes. We further comment on potential application of this methodology to more sensitive future instruments.

Forestry inventory based on multistage sampling with probability proportional to size

A multistage sampling technique, with probability proportional to size, is developed for a forest volume inventory using remote sensing data. The LANDSAT data, Panchromatic aerial photographs, and field data are collected. Based on age and homogeneity, pine and eucalyptus classes are identified. Selection of tertiary sampling units is made through aerial photographs to minimize field work. The sampling errors for eucalyptus and pine ranged from 8.34 to 21.89 percent and from 7.18 to 8.60 percent, respectively.

Shock spectra applications to a class of multiple degree-of-freedom structures system

The demand on safety performance of launching structure and equipment system from impulsive excitations necessitates a study which predicts the maximum response of the system as well as the maximum stresses in the system. A method to extract higher modes and frequencies for a class of multiple degree-of-freedom (MDOF) Structure system is proposed. And, along with the shock spectra derived from a linear oscillator model, a procedure to obtain upper bound solutions for maximum displacement and maximum stresses in the MDOF system is presented.

Identification and feedback control in structures with piezoceramic actuators

In this lecture we give fundamental well-posedness results for a variational formulation of a class of damped second order partial differential equations with unbounded input or control coefficients. Included as special cases in this class are structures with piezoceramic actuators. We consider approximation techniques leading to computational methods in the context of both parameter estimation and feedback control problems for these systems. Rigorous convergence results for parameter estimates and feedback gains are discussed.
