Space shuttle SRM interim contract, part 2

The characteristics of the solid rocket propellant for use with the space shuttle rocket engine are discussed. Design ramifications have created different web thicknesses and motor operating pressures which have necessitated small changes in the required propellant burning rate at 1,000 psia. However, the SRM burning rate remains well within the range demonstrated in the Poseidon and Minuteman first stage motors. Any change in propellant burning rate can be accomplished readily by a slight modification in the oxidizer particle size distribution. The ballistic and mechanical properties of the propellant remain unchanged from the baseline (Configuration 0).

Effects of N2O narcosis on the contraction and repayment of an oxygen debt

The oxygen deficit, oxygen debt, and the difference between them were measured in five male and three female subjects during and after exercise while breathing either air or a normoxic mixture containing 33% N2O and nitrogen. With the exception of a higher respiratory quotient at rest in N2O, there were no statistically significant differences for oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, expired gas volume, heart rate or blood lactate while breathing N2O during rest, exercise, or recovery. An appreciably, but not statistically, greater mean oxygen deficit was found in N2O along with a significantly greater mean oxygen debt; deficit-debt difference was unaffected by N2O. It was speculated that N2O narcosis did not affect the ability to utilize oxygen but that the response to the greater oxygen need of exercise may have been slowed with perhaps a concomitant greater depletion of stored high energy compounds.

Distortion in a full-scale bicone inlet with internal focused compression and 45 percent internal contraction

The distortion characteristics were investigated at the subsonic diffuser exit of a full-scale, Mach 2.5, axisymmetric, mixed compression inlet. Performance and steady-state distortion characteristics were obtained at zero and maximum angle of attack and during an inlet unstart-restart sequence. For the configuration with no cowl bleed, steady-state distortion P(max)P(min)P(bar) ranged from 0.10 for critical inlet operation at 0 deg angle-of-attack to 0.306 for supercritical inlet operation at 6.84 deg angle-of-attack. Vortex generators provided a 50 percent reduction in steady-state distortion for critical operation. Bleed has a smaller effect on steady-stated distortion.

Performance of vortex generators in a Mach 2.5 low-bleed full scale 45-percent-internal-contraction axisymmetric inlet

Steady-state and dynamic flow characteristics associated with two sets of vortex generators having different mixing criteria were determined. The inlet performance with and without these vortex generators is presented. The vortex generators were successful in eliminating separation, increasing area-weighted total pressure recovery, and decreasing distortion. Transmission times obtained from cross-correlations of the wall static pressures and the diffuser exit total pressure showed no effect of the upstream flow characteristics on the diffuser exit pressures when generators were used. Without generators, separation occurred and the upstream pressure characteristics had immediate effects on the diffuser exit pressure characteristics.

Poppet valve control of throat stability bypass to increase stable airflow range of a Mach 2.5. inlet with 60 percent internal contraction

The throat of a Mach 2.5 inlet with a coldpipe termination was fitted with a stability-bypass system. System variations included several stability bypass entrance configurations. Poppet valves controlled the bypass airflow. The inlet stable airflow range achieved with each configuration was determined for both steady state conditions and internal pulse transients. Results are compared with those obtained without a stability bypass system. Transient results were also obtained for the inlet with a choke point at the diffuser exit and for the inlet with large and small stability bypass plenum volumes. Poppet valves at the stability bypass exit provided the inlet with a stable airflow range of 20 percent or greater at all static and transient conditions.

Boundary layer bleed system study for a full-scale, mixed-compression inlet with 45 percent internal contraction

The results of an experimental bleed development study for a full-scale, Mach 2.5, axisymmetric, mixed-compression inlet were presented. The inlet was designed to satisfy the airflow requirements of the TF30-P-3 turbofan engine. Capabilities for porous bleed on the cowl surface and ram-scoop/flush-slot bleed on the centerbody were provided. A configuration with no bleed on the cowl achieved a minimum stable, diffuser exit, total pressure recovery of 0.894 with a centerbody-bleed mass flow ratio of 0.02. Configurations with cowl bleed had minimum stable recoveries as high as 0.900 but suffered range decrement penalties from the increased bleed mass flow removal. Limited inlet stability and unstart angle-of-attack data are presented.

Highligts of the contract year, 1 February 1974 to 31 January 1975

Two major marketing programs were initiated during 1974: (1) the unlimited search plan, and (2) the sales representative plan for northern California. The unlimited search plan was a six month program designed to offer clients multiple searches for a fixed fee. Although initial response was quite favorable, interest waned, and the plan was not renewed. Expansion and improvement of the on-line retrieval service continued. The ERIC thesaurus was added to the system. This thesaurus is an important acquisition as it gives the user greater flexibility in determining the best strategy for his search. Total terminal output time was reduced with a change to the direct access work file.

NASA's university program: Active grants and research contracts, fiscal year 1976

NASA Field Centers and certain Headquarters Program Offices provide funds for those research and development activities in universities which contribute to the mission needs of that particular NASA element. Although NASA has no predetermined amount of money to devote to university activities, the effort funded each year is substantial. This annual report is one means of documenting the NASA-university relationship, frequently denoted, collectively, as NASA's University Program.

Introduction to NASA contracts

The NASA Lewis Research Center issued requests for proposal to Avco Lycoming and Teledyne Continental Motors for a contractual effort to establish and demonstrate engine modifications to reduce exhaust emissions safely with minimum adverse effects on cost, weight, and fuel economy. The secondary objective was reducing fuel consumption.

Avco Lycoming/NASA contract status

The standards promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and oxides-of-nitrogen (NOx) emissions were the basis in a study of ways to reduce emissions from aircraft piston engines. A variable valve timing system, ultrasonic fuel atomization, and ignition system changes were postulated.

Development of a drive system for a sequential space camera contract modification 4(S)

The brush type dc motor and clutch were eliminated from the design of the 16 mm space sequential camera design and replaced by an electronically commutated motor. The new drive system reduces the current consumption at 24 fps to 220 mA. The drive can be programmed and controlled externally from the multipurpose programmable timer/intervalometer, as well as being controlled locally from the camera.
