Nonlinear programming extensions to rational function approximation methods for unsteady aerodynamic forces

The approximation of unsteady generalized aerodynamic forces in the equations of motion of a flexible aircraft are discussed. Two methods of formulating these approximations are extended to include the same flexibility in constraining the approximations and the same methodology in optimizing nonlinear parameters as another currently used extended least-squares method. Optimal selection of nonlinear parameters is made in each of the three methods by use of the same nonlinear, nongradient optimizer. The objective of the nonlinear optimization is to obtain rational approximations to the unsteady aerodynamics whose state-space realization is lower order than that required when no optimization of the nonlinear terms is performed. The free linear parameters are determined using the least-squares matrix techniques of a Lagrange multiplier formulation of an objective function which incorporates selected linear equality constraints. State-space mathematical models resulting from different approaches are described and results are presented that show comparative evaluations from application of each of the extended methods to a numerical example.

Modified hybrid control of robot manipulators for high precision assembly operations

This paper is concerned with applications of robot manipulators in high precision assembly tasks that can be successfully performed by employing a hybrid control scheme that independently controls force and position. A traditional hybrid control scheme is implemented in Cartesian space. In the modified hybrid control scheme introduced in this paper, the error driven control signals are expressed in joint space. This paper studies the implementation of the modified hybrid control scheme on a two-degree-of-freedom robot manipulator with a closed-kinematic chain mechanism. The performance of the traditional and modified hybrid control schemes is comparatively evaluated by computer simulation in terms of computation time and accuracy for several study cases.

Readout techniques for photon-counting microchannel image systems

A comparative evaluation is made of such readout methods for the microchannel plates that are commonly used in EUV, FUV, and X-ray low light level image systems as the (1) phosphor-video, (2) phosphor and binary-mask encoder, (3) direct discrete-position encoder, (4) direct analog amplitude position-encoder systems, and (5) delay-line encoders. Relative advantages and limitations are discussed in the context of low light level space-based astronomy applications. The delay-line technique offers great promise for high-resolution applications where oversampling is mandatory, as in spectroscopy.

Windshear detection and avoidance - Airborne systems perspective

The generalized windshear hazard index presently defined is derived from aircraft-position wind data and remotely sensed data obtained along the extended flight path by such candidate sensor technologies as microwave Doppler radar, Doppler lidar, and IR radiometry. Attention is given here to the results of a comparative evaluation of CO2 and Ho:YAG lidar sensor-employing windshear-detection systems, over a range 1-3 km ahead of the aircraft (corresponding to 15-45 sec of warning time). While the technology for a 10.6-micron CO2 lidar system is available, an optimum 2-micron REE laser crystal-based system remains to be developed.

Manual control of the Langley Laboratory telerobotic manipulator

Langley's new Laboratory Teleoperator Manipulator (LTM) provides manual control of seven-degree-of-freedom, replica, force-reflecting, master/slave manipulator arms in two arms simultaneously. This paper describes the LTM, its installation, and plans for a comparable evaluation study of various control input devices to the system. The comparison includes control using the system's master arms, six-degree-of-freedom hand controllers, minimasters, and a force-reflecting hand controller.

Planetary waves in Jupiter's equatorial atmosphere

Planetary-scale waves which have been latitudinally trapped within the equatorial jet of Jupiter are attested to by Voyager IR, radio occultation, and imaging data. An effort is presently made to identify a distinguishing class of planetary wave modes in the course of interpreting these data, with special attention being given to the equatorial plume features observed. A comparative evaluation of horizontal dispersion properties for linear wave modes on an equatorial beta plane suggests that the Rossby modes with a meridional structure index of 1 and an equivalent depth of 2-4 km are the interpretation most nearly consistent with all of the observational data for an equatorially trapped, wavenumber 12 pattern.

On modelling the residual strength of impact damaged, compression loaded laminates

A methodology is presented to predict the residual compression strength of impact damaged composite laminates by considering the competing failure modes of local delamination buckling and compression failure. The minimum delamination buckling load and the location of the first local region to buckle are determined by a Rayleigh-Ritz analysis. The Rayleigh-Ritz analysis is formulated to account for the multiple delamination locations, Poisson's ratio mismatch between sublaminates and possible bending-stretching coupling behavior of the delaminated regions. The compression failure load is determined by a modified maximum strain criterion applied in the delaminated region. The minimum delamination buckling and compression failure loads may be compared to the global buckling load to predict initial failure. For non-catastrophic failures, failure sequences are predicted in an iterative manner. Analytical predictions for sequential failure modes and loads are shown to correlate well with experimental results. A comparative evaluation of various delamination buckling models and their accuracy in predicting experimental results is also presented.

Spectral band selection for classification of soil organic matter content

This paper describes the spectral-band-selection (SBS) algorithm of Chen and Landgrebe (1987, 1988, and 1989) and uses the algorithm to classify the organic matter content in the earth's surface soil. The effectiveness of the algorithm was evaluated comparing the results of classification of the soil organic matter using SBS bands with those obtained using Landsat MSS bands and TM bands, showing that the algorithm was successful in finding important spectral bands for classification of organic matter content. Using the calculated bands, the probabilities of correct classification for climate-stratified data were found to range from 0.910 to 0.980.

Braze alloy process and strength characterization studies for 18 nickel grade 200 maraging steel with application to wind tunnel models

A comprehensive study of braze alloy selection process and strength characterization with application to wind tunnel models is presented. The applications for this study include the installation of stainless steel pressure tubing in model airfoil sections make of 18 Ni 200 grade maraging steel and the joining of wing structural components by brazing. Acceptable braze alloys for these applications are identified along with process, thermal braze cycle data, and thermal management procedures. Shear specimens are used to evaluate comparative shear strength properties for the various alloys at both room and cryogenic (-300 F) temperatures and include the effects of electroless nickel plating. Nickel plating was found to significantly enhance both the wetability and strength properties for the various braze alloys studied. The data are provided for use in selecting braze alloys for use with 18 Ni grade 200 steel in the design of wind tunnel models to be tested in an ambient or cryogenic environment.

Low-loss coupling to dielectric resonators

A compilation is presented of experimental observations and arguments concerning the use of dielectric resonators in applications requiring both tight coupling (beta greater than 10) and high unloaded Q, such as low loss bandpass filters. The microstrip coupled dielectric resonator is the primary focus, but an alternative coupling technique is discussed and comparatively evaluated. It is concluded that coupling factors as large as 65 are achievable.

Approximate factorization with source terms

A comparative evaluation is made of three methodologies with a view to that which offers the best approximate factorization error. While two of these methods are found to lead to more efficient algorithms in cases where factors which do not contain source terms can be diagonalized, the third method used generates the lowest approximate factorization error. This method may be preferred when the norms of source terms are large, and transient solutions are of interest.

Overview of the NASA-sponsored HSCT propulsion system studies

A brief overview of the NASA-sponsored HSCT propulsion system studies is presented that includes objectives, approach, schedules, and a summary of interim results highlighting the NASA in-house studies. Seven propulsion system concepts have been considered to date and comparatively evaluated on a first-order basis using takeoff gross weight (TOGW) as the main discriminator. Only two concepts have been screened out thus far and it is apparent that TOGW is not a strong discriminator. However, the first-order screening process did not account for differences in propulsion installation effects or climb-noise suppression penalties-both of which may strongly influence the screening process.

Analysis of NASA communications (Nascom) II network protocols and performance

The NASA Communications (Nascom) Division of the Mission Operations and Data Systems Directorate is to undertake a major initiative to develop the Nascom II (NII) network to achieve its long-range service objectives for operational data transport to support the Space Station Freedom Program, the Earth Observing System, and other projects. NII is the Nascom ground communications network being developed to accommodate the operational traffic of the mid-1990s and beyond. The authors describe various baseline protocol architectures based on current and evolving technologies. They address the internetworking issues suggested for reliable transfer of data over heterogeneous segments. They also describe the NII architecture, topology, system components, and services. A comparative evaluation of the current and evolving technologies was made, and suggestions for further study are described. It is shown that the direction of the NII configuration and the subsystem component design will clearly depend on the advances made in the area of broadband integrated services.

AMTEC system performance studies using the detailed electrode kinetic and transport model

A detailed electrochemical model of the alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC) electrode and current collector grid has been developed recently. Comparative evaluations of the resulting differences in model predictions reveal that the new detailed model predicts up to 50 percent higher electrode power densities at condenser operating temperatures above 600 K. The new model, with experimentally determined parameters, was used to recalculate the projected system performance of previously reported 1- and 100-kWe AMTEC space power systems that had incorporated earlier electrolyte/electrode models. It was found that when the detailed model was used to determine the electrode power densities, enhanced specific power and efficiencies are predicted.

Single element injector cold flow testing for STME swirl coaxial injector element design

An oxidizer-swirled coaxial element injector is being investigated for application in the Space Transportation Main Engine (STME). Single element cold flow experiments were conducted to provide characterization of the STME injector element for future analysis, design, and optimization. All tests were conducted to quiescent, ambient backpressure conditions. Spray angle, circumferential spray uniformity, dropsize, and dropsize distribution were measured in water-only and water/nitrogen flows. Rupe mixing efficiency was measured using water/sucrose solution flows with a large grid patternator for simple comparative evaluation of mixing. Factorial designs of experiment were used for statistical evaluation of injector geometrical design features and propellant flow conditions on mixing and atomization. Increasing the free swirl angle of the liquid oxidizer had the greatest influence on increasing the mixing efficiency. The addition of gas assistance had the most significant effect on reducing oxidizer droplet size parameters and increasing droplet size distribution. Increasing the oxidizer injection velocity had the greatest influence for reducing oxidizer droplet size parameters and increasing size distribution for non-gas assisted flows. Single element and multi-element subscale hot fire testing are recommended to verify optimized designs before committing to the STME design.

Crystal growth of ZnSe and related ternary compound semiconductors by physical vapor transport

The materials to be investigated are ZnSe and related ternary semiconducting alloys (e.g., ZnS(x)Se(1-x), ZnTe(x)Se(1-x), and Zn(1-x)Cd(x)Se). These materials are useful for opto-electronic applications such as high efficient light emitting diodes and low power threshold and high temperature lasers in the blue-green region of the visible spectrum. The recent demonstration of its optical bistable properties also makes ZnSe a possible candidate material for digital optical computers. The investigation consists of an extensive ground-based study followed by flight experimentation, and involves both experimental and theoretical work. The objectives of the ground-based work are to establish the characteristics of the crystals grown on Earth as a basis for subsequent comparative evaluations of the crystals grown in a low gravity environment and to obtain the experimental data and perform the analyses required to define the optimum parameters for the flight experiments. During the six months of the Preliminary Definition Phase, the research efforts were concentrated on the binary compound ZnSe - the purification of starting materials of Se by zone refining, the synthesis of ZnSe starting materials, the heat treatments of the starting materials, the vapor transport rate measurements, the vapor partial pressure measurements of ZnSe, the crystal growth of ZnSe by physical vapor transport, and various characterization on the grown ZnSe crystals.
