Cyano-ambivalence: Spectroscopy and photophysics of [Ru(diimine)(CN-BR 3 ) 4 ] 2- complexes

The UV–visible absorption and luminescence spectra of [Ru(diimine)(CN) 4 ] 2- derivatives have been tuned over wide ranges through variations in solvent, substituents on the diimine ligand, and boronation of the cyanide ligands. Here, trifluoromethyl substitution at the 4 and 4' positions of the diimine induces red shifts in metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption and luminescence bands. Boronation of the cyanide ligands produces substantial blue shifts in MLCT energies. The combination of diimine trifluoromethylation and cyanide boronation produces MLCT blue shifts that are about 75% as large as those produced by boronation alone.

Nonthermal Plasma-Stimulated C–N Coupling from CH 4 and N 2 Depends on the Presence of Surface CH x and Plasma-Phase CN Species

Formation of C–N containing compounds from plasma-catalytic coupling of CH 4 and N 2 over various transition metals (Ni, Pd, Cu, Ag, and Au) is investigated using a multimodal spectroscopic approach, combining polarization-modulation infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRAS) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Through sequential experiments utilizing CH 4 and N 2 nonthermal plasmas, we minimize plasma-phase reactions and identify key intermediates for C–N coupling on metal surfaces. Results show that simultaneous CH 4 and N 2 exposure with plasma stimulation produces surface C–N species. However, N 2 –CH 4 sequential exposure does not lead to C–N species formation, while CH 4 –N 2 sequential exposure reveals the presence of CH x surface species and CN radical species as key precursors to C–N species formation. From further analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, the influence of exposure conditions on the degree of nitrogen incorporation and the nature of C–N species formed were revealed. The work highlights the importance of surface chemistry and exposure conditions in surface C–N coupling with plasma stimulation.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

Charge disproportionation in the spin-liquid candidate κ – ( ET ) 2 Cu 2 ( CN ) 3 at 6 K revealed by Cu 63 NQR measurements

The spin-liquid candidate κ – ( ET ) 2 Cu 2 ( CN ) 3 [ET: bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] does not exhibit magnetic ordering down to a very low temperature, but shows a mysterious anomaly at 6 K. The origin of the so-called 6-K anomaly is still under debate. We carried out nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on the copper sites of the insulating layers, which are sensitive to the charge dynamics unlike conventional spin- 1 / 2 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The main finding of this Rapid Communication is that the observation of a sharp peak behavior in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T 1 – 1 of Cu 63 NQR at 6 K while T 1 – 1 of both C 13 and H 1 NMR show no clear anomaly. This behavior can be understood as a second-order phase transition related to charge disproportionation in the ET layers.

Gapped magnetic ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}Cu{sub 2}(CN){sub 3}.

Geometrical frustration, quantum entanglement, and disorder may prevent long-range ordering of localized spins with strong exchange interactions, resulting in an exotic state of matter. kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) is considered the prime candidate for this elusive quantum spin liquid state, but its ground-state properties remain puzzling. We present a multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study down to millikelvin temperatures, revealing a rapid drop of the spin susceptibility at 6 kelvin. This opening of a spin gap, accompanied by structural modifications, is consistent with the formation of a valence bond solid ground state. We identify an impurity contribution to the ESR response that becomes dominant when the intrinsic spins form singlets. Probing the electrons directly manifests the pivotal role of defects for the low-energy properties of quantum spin systems without magnetic order.
