Observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π +

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π + is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 5.4 σ by using 4.5 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The absolute branching fraction of Λ c + → Σ − K + π + is measured to be ( 3.8 ± 1.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ) × 10 − 4 in a model-independent approach. This is the first observation of a Cabibbo-suppressed Λ c + decay involving Σ − in the final state. The ratio of branching fractions between Λ c + → Σ − K + π + and the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ c + → Σ − π + π + is observed to be ( 0.4 ± 0.1 ) s c 2 , where s c ≡ sin θ c = 0.2248 with θ c the Cabibbo mixing angle. Its mass and width are measured to be 2316 ± 9 stat ± 3 0 syst MeV / c 2 and 89 ± 1 5 stat ± 2 6 syst MeV , respectively. The product branching fractions of B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ′ ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ] and B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → X ( 2300 ) η ] B [ X ( 2300 ) → ϕ η ′ ] are determined to be ( 4.8 ± 1.3 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 and ( 2.2 ± 0.7 stat ± 0.7 syst ) × 10 − 6 , respectively. The branching fraction B [ ψ ( 3686 ) → ϕ η η ′ ] is measured for the first time to be ( 3.14 ± 0.1 7 stat ± 0.2 4 syst ) × 10 − 5 . The first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Search for K + decays to a muon and invisible particles

The NA62 experiment at CERN reports searches for K + → μ + N and K + → μ + ν X decays, where N and X are massive invisible particles, using the 2016–2018 data set. The N particle is assumed to be a heavy neutral lepton, and the results are expressed as upper limits of O ( 10 - 8 ) of the neutrino mixing parameter | U μ 4 | 2 for N masses in the range 200–384 MeV/ c 2 and lifetime exceeding 50 ns. The X particle is considered a scalar or vector hidden sector mediator decaying to an invisible final state, and upper limits of the decay branching fraction for X masses in the range 10–370 MeV/ c 2 are reported for the first time, ranging from O ( 10 - 5 ) to O ( 10 - 7 ) . An improved upper limit of 1.0 × 10 - 6 is established at 90% CL on the K + → μ + ν ν ν ¯ branching fraction.

Study of the lineshape of X ( 3872 ) using B decays to D 0 D ¯ * 0 K

We present a study of the X⁡(3872) lineshape in the decay B →X(3872)⁢K →D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 ⁢K using a data sample of 772 ×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ pairs collected at the Y⁡(4⁢S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +⁢ e - collider. The peak near the threshold in the D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 invariant mass spectrum is fitted using a relativistic Breit-Wigner lineshape. We determine the mass and width parameters to be m BW =3873.7⁢1$^{+0.56}_{-0.50⁢}$(stat) ±0.13⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 and Γ BW =5.2$^{+2.2}_{-1.5}$⁢(stat) ±0.4⁢(syst) MeV, respectively. The branching fraction is found to be $\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + → X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) × $\mathscr{B}$⁡(X⁡(3872) → D 0 $\overline{D}$ *0 ) = (0.9⁢7$^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$⁢(stat) ± 0.10⁢(syst)) ×10 -4 . The signal from B 0 decays is observed for the first time with 5.2σ significance, and the ratio of branching fractions between charged and neutral B decays is measured to be $\mathscr{B}$(B 0 → X⁡(3872)⁢K 0 )/$\mathscr{B}$⁡(B + →X⁡(3872)⁢K + ) =1.34$^{+0.47}_{-0.40}$⁢(stat) $^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$⁢(syst). Search for long-lived particles produced in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in association with a Z boson is presented. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 fb -1 . The LLPs are assumed to decay to a pair of standard model quarks that are identified as displaced jets within the CMS tracker system. Triggers and selections based on Z boson decays to electron or muon pairs improve the sensitivity to light LLPs (down to 15 GeV). This search provides sensitivity to beyond the standard model scenarios which predict LLPs produced in association with a Z boson. In particular, the results are interpreted in the context of exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of scalar LLPs (H → SS). The Higgs boson decay branching fraction is constrained to values less than 6% for proper decay lengths of 10–100 mm and for LLP masses between 40 and 55 GeV. In the case of low-mass (≈ 15 GeV) scalar particles that subsequently decay to a pair of b quarks, the search is sensitive to branching fractions B(H → SS) < 20% for proper decay lengths of 10–50 mm. The use of associated production with a Z boson increases the sensitivity to low-mass LLPs of this analysis with respect to gluon fusion searches. In the case of 15 GeV scalar LLPs, the improvement corresponds to a factor of 2 at a proper decay length of 30 mm.

Measurement of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - decay properties and search for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements are presented of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - branching fraction and effective lifetime, as well as results of a search for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay in proton-proton collisions at at the LHC. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector in 2016–2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . The branching fraction of the $B_s^0$ → μ + μ - decay and the effective $B_s^0$ meson lifetime are the most precise single measurements to date. No evidence for the B 0 → μ + μ - decay has been found. All results are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions and previous measurements.

No significant signals are observed for the decays D + → K S 0 η e + ν e and D + → η η e + ν e and we set the upper limits on their branching fractions. Search for light long-lived neutral particles from Higgs boson decays via vector-boson-fusion production from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is reported for long-lived dark photons with masses between 0.1 GeV and 15 GeV, from exotic decays of Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson-fusion. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are probed. This search uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample collected in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Dominant backgrounds from Standard Model processes and non-collision sources are estimated using data-driven techniques. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the Higgs boson to dark photon branching fraction are reported as a function of the dark photon mean proper decay length or of the dark photon mass and the coupling between the Standard Model and the potential dark sector. This search is combined with previous ATLAS searches obtained in the gluon–gluon fusion and WH production modes. A branching fraction above 10% is excluded at 95% CL for a 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark photon mean proper decay lengths between 173 and 1296 mm and mass of 10 GeV.

Search for high-mass $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ resonances using hadronic $W/Z$ boson decays from 139 fb –1 of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for high-mass charged and neutral bosons decaying to $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ final states is presented in this paper. The analysis uses a data sample of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector during LHC Run 2 operation. The sensitivity of the search is determined using models of the production and decay of spin-1 charged bosons and spin-0/2 neutral bosons. The range of resonance masses explored extends from 1.0 TeV to 6.8 TeV. At these high resonance masses, it is beneficial to target the hadronic decays of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons because of their large branching fractions. The decay products of the high-momentum $W/Z$ bosons are strongly collimated and boosted-boson tagging techniques are employed to improve the sensitivity. No evidence of a signal above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed, and upper limits on the production cross-sections of these bosons times their branching fractions to $Wγ$ and $Zγ$ are derived for various boson production models.

Searches for exclusive Higgs and Z boson decays into a vector quarkonium state and a photon using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of ATLAS $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton–proton collision data

Searches for the exclusive decays of Higgs and Z bosons into a vector quarkonium state and a photon are performed in the μ + μ - γ final state with a proton– proton collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are compatible with the expected back grounds. The 95% confidence-level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs boson decays into J/ψ γ , ψ(2S) γ , and $Υ$(1S, 2S, 3S) γ are found to be 2.0 × 10 -4 , 10.5×10 -4 , and (2.5, 4.2, 3.4)×10 -4 , respectively, assuming Standard Model production of the Higgs boson. The corresponding 95% CL upper limits on the branching fractions of the Z boson decays are 1.2 × 10 -6 , 2.4 × 10 -6 , and (1.1, 1.3, 2.4) × 10 -6 . An observed 95% CL interval of (-133, 175) is obtained for the κ c /κ γ ratio of Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and a 95% CL interval of (-37, 40) is obtained for κ b /κ γ .

Higgs boson decay to charmonia via $\mathcal{c}$-quark fragmentation

We calculate the decay branching fractions of the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ and $n_c$ via the charm-quark fragmentation mechanism for the color-singlet and color-octet states in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. The decay rates are governed by the charm-quark Yukawa coupling, unlike the decay H → $J/ψ$ +γ, which is dominated by the $γ^*- J/ψ$ mixing. We find that the decay branching fractions can be about 2 x 10 -5 for H →$c\bar c$ + $J/ψ$, and 6 x 10 -5 for H →$c\bar c$ + $n-c$. We comment on the perspective of searching for the Higgs boson to $J/ψ$ transition at the High-Luminosity LHC for testing the charm-quark Yukawa coupling.

Search for long-lived particles decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying in the CMS muon detectors is presented. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 , recorded at the LHC in 2016–2018, is used. The decays of LLPs are reconstructed as high multiplicity clusters of hits in the muon detectors. In the context of twin Higgs models, the search is sensitive to LLP masses from 0.4 to 55 GeV and a broad range of LLP decay modes, including decays to hadrons, τ leptons, electrons, or photons. No excess of events above the standard model background is observed. The most stringent limits to date from LHC data are set on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to a pair of LLPs with masses below 10 GeV. This search also provides the best limits for various intervals of LLP proper decay length and mass. Finally, this search sets the first limits at the LHC on a dark quantum chromodynamic sector whose particles couple to the Higgs boson through gluon, Higgs boson, photon, vector, and dark-photon portals, and is sensitive to branching fractions of the Higgs boson to dark quarks as low as 2 × 10 − 3 . © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN
