Chemical fractionations in meteorites. IX - C3 chondrites

Radiochemical neutron activation is applied to the analysis of four C3V chondrites and three C3O chondrites for 17 trace elements (U, Re, Ir, Ni, Au, Sb, Ge, Ag, Rb, Cs, Bi, Tl, Br, Se, Te, In, and Cd). It is shown that both classes exhibit a typical chondritic step pattern, reflecting loss of volatiles during chondrule formation. It appears that the H2S/H2 ratio is the key variable to account for the condensation of chalcophile elements as a function of H2S. C3O's seem to have condensed in a region where enough metallic Fe was present to buffer the H2S pressure, whereas C3V's condensed in a more oxidized region where H2S was in excess. Accretion temperatures for both subclasses is determined. Sb and Au show variable depletion, presumably reflecting variable loss during chondrule formation.

Composition of the projectiles that bombarded the lunar highlands

Twenty highland samples from Apollo 14, 15, and 17 and the eucrites Juvinas and Morre County were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, U, and Zn. The meteoritic components of 82 highland rocks were recalculated with the new corrections for the indigenous contribution and were classified by discriminant and cluster analysis as well as ternary diagrams, using Ir, Re, Au and Ni as diagnostic elements. To characterize these groups more fully, average abundances of meteoritic volatiles (Sb, Ge, Ag, Se, Te, and Bi) were calculated from regressions against Ir.

'Mysterite' - A late condensate from the solar nebula

An attempt is made to clarify the nature of 'mysterite', a material that had been postulated to explain the overabundance of Tl, Bi, and Ag in certain chondrites. Four dark clasts and a vein sample from the H6 chondrite Supuhee were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, and Zn. One of the clasts is enriched in all volatile elements, while the other four samples are enriched only in the siderophile volatiles Ag, Bi, and Tl. The enrichments range up to 100 times typical H6 chondrite abundances. The proportions of Ag, Bi, and Tl suggest the presence of at least two, Tl-rich and Tl-poor, varieties of mysterite. The former seems to dominate in Supuhee and Krymka, and the latter in Mezo-Madaras. Apparently mysterite is a late condensate from the solar nebula that collected volatiles left behind by earlier generations of chondrites. It was incorporated in Supuhee and perhaps in other chondrites (mainly of low petrologic types) during brecciation events.

Soil breccia relationships and vapor deposits on the moon

Sets of Apollo 15 and 17 samples consisting of soil, breccia and breccia glass coating were selected for a study of regolith evolution. The data are inconclusive with respect to local cratering effects or rock weathering. A large number of samples from all missions fall into one of five groups based on their water leachable Cl and Br fractions. A limited number of vapor clouds with distinct labile Cl/Br ratios is suggested. One such vapor cloud may have particular significance since it has a primordial Cl/Br ratio.

Volatile elements in chondrites - Metamorphism or nebular fractionation

Three of the most highly metamorphosed meteorites of their respective classes, Shaw (LL7), Karoonda (C5), and Coolidge (C4), were analyzed by radiochemical neutron activation analysis for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Se, Te, Tl, U, and Zn. Comparison with data by Lipschutz and coworkers (1977) on artificially heated primitive meteorites shows that the natural metamorphism of meteorites cannot have taken place in a system open to volatiles. Shaw, metamorphosed at 1300 C for more than 1 million yr, is less depleted in In, Bi, Ag, Te, Zn, and Tl than Krymka heated at 1000 C for 1 week. Karoonda, metamorphosed at 600 C for many millennia, is less depleted in Bi and Tl than Allende heated at 600 C for 1 week. Data on primordial noble gases also show that the volatile-element patterns of ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites were established by nebular condensation and changed little, if at all, during metamorphism. For enstatite chondrites, the evidence is still incomplete but seems to favor a nebular origin of the volatile pattern.

Meteoritic material in lunar highland samples from the Apollo 11 and 12 sites

Radiochemical neutron activation analyses for Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Cd, Cs, Ge, In, Ir, Ni, Os, Pd, Rb, Re, Sb, Te, Tl, U and Zn were carried out on 11 samples from the Apollo 11 and 12 sites (two samples of rock 12013, one granitic and one KREEPy; 4 KREEP fragments from 2-4 mm soil 12033,2; 4 anorthositic fragments from 1-3 mm soil 10085,104; 1 sample of 'Luny' rock-felsite-KREEP breccia 12013 10085,31 LR-1). Most Apollo 12 samples were found to have an Imbrium meteoritic component; others, typified by the Luny breccia, apparently contain a new meteoritic component of low Re content. Components of higher Ir/Au ratio (3L, 5L and 7) were found in Apollo 11 anorthositic samples; the fact that their enrichment in meteoritic siderophiles parallels that of Fe, Mg, REE and other KREEP elements is consistent with progressive contamination of an anorthositic crust. The Luny rock was tentatively classified Group 2, supporting the assignment of this group to Serenitatis.

Trace elements in the Allende meteorite. IV - Amoeboid olivine aggregates

INAA data for Ca, Sc, Hf, La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Os, Ir, Ru, Na, Cl, Br, Fe, Mn, Cr, Co, Au, As, and Sb are presented for ten amoeboid aggregates from the Allende meteorite. Only one lacks olivine. Seven of the remainder, as a group, have cosmic proportions of refractory lithophile and siderophile elements and appear to have formed when coarse-grained Allende inclusion material underwent partial reaction with a low-temperature nebular gas and mixture with FeO-rich olivine. The other two have highly fractionated abundances of refractory elements relative to one another compared to Cl chondrites, including Group II REE patterns, and probably formed by the mixing of fine-grained Allende inclusion material with FeO-rich olivine. Non-refractory siderophile components are also different in composition in each type of amoeboid olivine aggregate.

Limb blood flow - Rest and heavy exercise in sitting and supine positions in man

The objectives of the study were twofold: (1) to determine the effect of body position (hydrostatic pressure) on total blood flow in active and passive limbs at rest and after severe exercise; and (2) to further evaluate the impedance technique for measurement of blood flow. To this end, the effect of body position on the redistribution of total blood flow in active (leg) and passive (forearm) limbs during exercise was determined by measuring total limb impedance (blood flow) in five male and one female subjects in sitting and supine positions with a modified Beckman BR-100 rheograph. The results show that, at rest and after exercise, the supine position induces significantly greater flows in the leg but not in the forearm. With severe exercise, blood flows are increased in both passive and active limbs, so that there is probably no net transfer of blood volume from passive to active muscles. The advantages of the impedance technique over other methods are stressed.

Spectral emission of nuclear excited XeBr*

The vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy system and MCFIG capsule were filled with a He-3:Ar:Xe:Br (534:195:12:6) torr mixture and irradiatied by a CW flux of 17 x 10 to the 11th power neutrons/sq cm sec. The XeBr* emission was observed, but the Br2 emission normally observed in argon-bromine mixtures predominates. This spectrum is typical of these mixtures with XeBr* probably peaking with 0.1 percent Bromine in 2 atmosphere argon with 2 percent xenon. The addition of a large partial pressure of He-3 produces additional unknowns. The typical vibrational structure of XeBr* was not observed. Sapphire emission continuums were present. Energy deposition was 0.43 watts and the capsule output under the XeBr* and Br2 bands was 0.0016 watts, giving an efficiency of 0.37 percent.

Atomic emission spectroscopy

The relationship between the Slater-Condon theory and the conditions within the atom as revealed by experimental data was investigated. The first spectrum of Si, Rb, Cl, Br, I, Ne, Ar, and Xe-136 and the second spectrum of As, Cu, and P were determined. Methods for assessing the phase stability of fringe counting interferometers and the design of an autoranging scanning system for digitizing the output of an infrared spectrometer and recording it on magnetic tape are described.

Near-surface daytime thermal conductivity in the lunar regolith

If mass and heat transport properties in the top few cm of the lunar surface correspond, estimates of the daytime thermal conductivity based on the diffusivity calculated from in situ concentration gradients of low temperature volatile elements should be possible. Concentration gradients of Hg and Br in response to the diurnal heat pulse have been measured in samples from cores. The conductivity estimated is either approximately 10 to the -3rd or approximately 2 x 10 to the -4th W/cm-degrees K depending on the assumptions made. The latter value is in agreement with near-surface daytime thermal properties calculated by Keihm et al. (1973) to explain the mean surface temperature. An activation energy for diffusion of Hg in the top few cm of the lunar surface is estimated to be approximately 8 kcal/mole and suggests either vapor or surface migration. Fixation of the concentration gradient after the cores were extracted may be due to lack of a temperature gradient to act as a driving force or to disruption of grain contacts or their corrosion on exposure to air.

Moon and earth - Compositional differences inferred from siderophiles, volatiles, and alkalis in basalts

A comparison of RNAA analyses of 18 trace elements in 25 low-Ti lunar and 10 terrestrial oceanic basalts indicated that the volatiles such as Ag, Bi, and Br are depleted in lunar basalts by nearly constant factors of 0.026 relative to terrestrial basalts. This constancy is not consistent with models that derive the moon's volatiles from partial recondensation of the earth's mantle or from partial degassing of a captured body; it is consistent with models which derive planetary volatiles from a thin veneer of C-chondrite material. Chalcogens (Se and Te) have almost constant and identical abundances in lunar and terrestrial basalts; siderophiles show abundant Ni in lunar basalts, while Ir, Re, Ge, and Au are depleted.

Trace elements in ocean ridge basalt glasses - Implications for fractionations during mantle evolution and petrogenesis

Seven documented and fresh glassy selvages from ocean floor basalt pillows were analyzed for trace elements including Ag, Au, Bi, Br, Ni, Pd, and Zn using radiochemical activation analysis. Glasses from DSDP leg 24, site 238 in the Indian Ocean have a trace element pattern which reflects secondary processes at a shallow depth. Chemical fractionations in petrogenesis of tholeiitic basalts indicate that (Ir, Os), Au, Pd, Ni, and Re are strongly fractionated in igneous processes; the unfractionated chondritic mantle pattern thus imposes constraints on mantle evolution models. Finally, the limited Rb/Cs fractionation in oceanic tholeiites reflects the low abundance of volatiles and hydrous silicates in normal ocean ridge basalts.

Halogen and phosphorus storage in the earth

Chemical analyses of surface reservoirs, coupled with compositions for interior zones inferred from geophysical and geochemical data have been used to obtain a range of estimates of the bulk composition of the earth. It is suggested that (1) apatite with 3 wt% Fe, up to 1 wt% Cl, and 0.003 wt% Br is the principal mineral reservoir for halogens, and mica is a subsidiary reservoir; (2) apatite with 18 wt% P is the principal store of P in the upper mantle and perhaps lower mantle, but accounts for only one-twentieth of P in the earth; and (3) the remaining P is in a reservoir inaccessible to magmatism, and may amount to a maximum of 0.7 wt% in the core.

Kinetics and mechanism of the disproportionation of BrO radicals

In the reported investigation, measurements were conducted of the rate constant for the reaction BrO + BrO yields products (1), taking into account the temperature range from 223 to 338 K and the pressure range from 50 to 475 torr of He. The flash photolysis-ultraviolet absorption technique was employed in the experiments. Two independent approaches were used to determine the relative rates of the two reaction branches, BrO + BrO yields BrOO + Br (1a), and BrO + BrO yields Br2 + O2 (1b), one dependent and the other independent of the BrO absorption cross section with the results being in excellent agreement. The rate constant, k(1), was found to be independent of pressure.

Extinct I-129 in C3 chondrites

Eight C3 chondrites were examined by the I-129 to Xe-129 dating method to determine whether their initial I-129/I-127 ratios, or R(0), correlate with any other properties. The R(0)'s range from 1.60 x 10 to the -4th to 1.09 x 10 to the -4th, corresponding to I to Xe ages from 2.0 Myr before to 6.7 Myr after the Murchison magnetite. Three C30's have essentially indistinguishable R(0)'s, while a fourth is undatable. Four C3V's show a distinct spread, ranging from 1.60 + or 0.07 x 10 to the -4th to 1.09 + or - 0.10 x 10 to the -4th. These R(0)'s correlate inversely with four other properties: I, Br, and Cd content, olivine composition, both percent mean deviation, and proportion of iron-poor olivine grains. The simplest model that accounts for the correlations with R(0) involves mixing of two iodine components in the solar nebula, associated with gas and grains, respectively. The second, of lower I-129/I-127 ratio, predominated at later times and thus became enriched in late-formed meteorites.

Comparison of advanced thermal and electrical storage for parabolic dish solar thermal power systems

Parabolic dish solar concentrator cluster concepts are explored, with attention given to thermal storage systems coupled to Stirling and Brayton cycle power conversion devices. Sensible heat storage involving molten salt (NaOH), liquid sodium, and solid cordierite bricks are considered for 1500 F thermal storage systems. Latent heat storage with NaF-MgF2 phase change materials are explored in terms of passive, active, and direct contact designs. Comparisons are made of the effectiveness of thermal storage relative to redox, Na-S, Zn-Cl, and Zn-Br battery storage systems. Molten lead trickling down through a phase change eutectic, the NaF-MgF2, formed the direct contact system. Heat transport in all systems is effected through Inconel pipes. Using a cost goal of 120-150 mills/kWh as the controlling parameter, sensible heat systems with molten salts transport with either Stirling or Brayton engines, or latent heat systems with Stirling engines, and latent heat-Brayton engine with direct contact were favored in the analyses. Battery storage systems, however, offered the most flexibility of applications.

Brominated organic species in the arctic atmosphere

Measurements are reported of four gas-phase, brominated organic species found in the Arctic atmosphere during March and April 1983. Volume mixing ratios for CH3Br, CH2BrCH2Br, CHBr3, and CH2Br2 were determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis from samples taken Arctic wide, including at the geographic North Pole and during a tropopause folding event over Baffin Bay near Thule, Greenland. Methyl bromide mixing ratios were reasonably constant at 11 plus or minus 4 pptv, while the other three brominated organics showed a high degree of variability. Bromoform (2 to 46 pptv) was found to be the dominant contributor to gaseous organic bromine to the Arctic troposphere at 38 plus or minus 10 percent followed by CH2Br2 (3 to 60 pptv) at 29 plus or minus 6 percent. Both CH3Br and CH2BrCH2Br (1 to 37 pptv) reservoirs contained less than 20 percent of the organically bound bromine. Stratospheric samples, taken during a tropopause folding event, showed mixing ratios for all four species at levels high enough to support a stratospheric total volume mixing ratio of 249 pptv Br (888 ngBr/SCM).
