Modeling of Chemical Slurry Rheology in DWPF Sludge Batch (SB) 10 Simulants

The Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) treats high-activity radionuclides from sludge through a process called vitrification. This process converts radioactive liquid waste currently stored in tank farms into a solid glass form that is suitable for long-term storage and disposal. Due to the complexities involved in vitrifying this waste within each operation of the Chemical Processing Cell (CPC), waste rheology is studied to characterize the fluid-mechanical properties as it passes through the CPC and into the Melter. To better understand the waste and validate flow behavior, slurry rheology of simulants that represents the waste was studied at various acid stoichiometry percentages and solids concentrations to determine the simulant’s yield stress and viscosity. This research work has been supported by the DOE-FIU Science & Technology Workforce Development Initiative, an innovative program developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) and Florida International University’s Applied Research Center (FIU-ARC). During the spring of 2022, a DOE Fellow intern, Brendon Cintas, spent 10 weeks doing a summer internship at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRS) under the supervision and guidance of Dan Lambert, Chemical Flowsheet Development. The intern’s project was initiated on June 6, 2022, and continued through August 11, 2022 with the objective of assisting scientists at SRNL’s Rheology and Grout Laboratory at Aiken Country Technology Lab (ACTL) better understand the sludge composition on the rheology of a simulant slurry using a HAAKE RheoStress 6000 rheometer and extrapolate the results to the real-waste data.

Mercury Testing with Sludge Batch 10 Tank 40 Simulant

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) requested that researchers at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) perform testing designed to examine why the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) is not collecting elemental mercury in the Mercury Water Wash Tank (MWWT). In order for DWPF to recover mercury, mercuric oxide must first be reduced to elemental mercury. The elemental mercury must then be steam stripped, condense, and coalesce in the Mercury Water Wash Tank (MWWT) during chemical processing in the Sludge Receipt and Adjustment Tank (SRAT). The efficiency of these steps was investigated in a series of laboratory scale SRAT experiments under the nitric-glycolic and nitric-formic flowsheets utilizing Momentive Y-17112 and Antifoam 747. Mercury speciation in the Slurry Mix Evaporator Condensate Tank (SMECT) and condensate streams was also examined. The key conclusions from these experiments are as follows: Mercury II Oxide may not be fully reduced to elemental mercury during acid addition at 93°C. Higher temperatures, i.e., boiling may be necessary to fully reduce Mercury II Oxide. The highest percent mercury recovery (71 %) in the MWWT was observed in the MS-NGA-17112 experiment (nitric-glycolic acid flowsheet with Momentive Y-17112), which is how DWPF is currently operating the SRAT.

Literature Review Investigating Adsorbents for Mercury Removal from Salt Batch Feed Material

The Savannah River Site (SRS) Liquid Waste System (LWS) contains mercury that originated from decades of canyon processing where it was used as a catalyst for dissolving aluminum cladding of reactor fuel. Since the start of radioactive operations, the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) has experienced processing difficulties due to the presence of mercury-laden solids. In response to these challenges, Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) has been requested by Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)/Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) personnel to perform a literature review to assess the feasibility of chemical strikes to salt waste-containing tanks at the SRS as an option to reduce mercury introduction into SWPF. The literature review should evaluate known technologies and chemistries for decreasing mercury concentration and the anticipated efficacy of each technology on various mercury species known to exist in SRS waste.

Characterization of Large Batch 14YWT Heat (NFA-2) for JOYO Irradiations (Rev.1)

The development and deployment of advanced cladding materials in advanced reactors requires the collection of relevant performance data for each cladding concept. Novel cladding concepts typically undergo significant innovation and iteration over the course of their development, and intention should be given to providing a snapshot of present performance. Thus, a modern heat of the nanostructured ferritic alloy (NFA) 14YWT is produced using state-of-the-art procedures for impurity minimization combined with thermomechanical processing methods designed to optimize fracture toughness, tensile strength, and ductility. This new heat of 14YWT, NFA-2, will provide the Advanced Fuels Campaign with adequate material for upcoming irradiation and mechanical testing campaigns. This report outlines procurement of new gas atomized 14YWT powder, production of four new bars of 14YWT, and subsequent mechanical and microstructural property characterization.

Humate Amendment Injection Viability Testing – Supplementary Batch Mixture and Soil Column Studies

Groundwater in the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ) in the Southern Sector of the M-Area Hazardous Waste management Facility (HWMF) is contaminated with chlorinated ethenes, including trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Treatment of contaminated groundwater with humic acid is being evaluated as a potential corrective action for these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the LLAZ in Southern Sector (SRNS, 2019). Pilot scale injections of Huma-K brand humic acid for groundwater treatment were previously performed in M-Area between 2017 and 2020 (Amidon, 2023). Groundwater was extracted from the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ), then a solution of humate was mixed with recovered groundwater and subsequently re-injected into the same aquifer unit. Operations of the historical humate pilot testing were discontinued in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, low injection rates, and recirculation fluid spillage. No further field scale or laboratory research to investigate humate amended groundwater injection was performed at the SRS until 2024. At the request of Area Completion Projects (ACP), the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) performed supplementary testing to help determine the viability of further injection of humate as a remedial option for VOCs within the LLAZ in the Southern Sector of the M-Area HWMF.

Batch Test Analysis of Potential Treatment Technologies for Cyanide Groundwater Remediation

In addressing groundwater contamination, several remediation technologies are widely employed, including ion exchange (IX) resins and other adsorbents in pump-and-treat (P&T) facilities. However, many sites do not have the complex nature of the Hanford Site – a legacy production site that is part of the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons complex. The Hanford Site covers an area of nearly 1,500 km 2 and has various inorganic and organic contaminants. One contaminant of concern in the Hanford Site’s Central Plateau is cyanide, particularly in the recalcitrant form of ferrocyanide. While ferrocyanide is often considered a stable complex, it can release free cyanide under certain conditions and presents challenges when testing for cyanide as a total cyanide analysis cannot differentiate between complexed and free cyanide.
